    This appears to run pretty well for going through a translation layer, I can only imagine gaming experience on M series Macs to improve not only as translation software improves but also as Windows begins to make a gradual shift towards ARM processors as well. Hopefully developers will begin to put some thought into making ARM versions of their software once it becomes a sizeable market in the Windows PC market.

      ARM is nice for mobile battery stuff but I honestly hope never to see desktop computers cheapening so as to use reduced instruction set stuff probably as they also begin soldering them to motherboards (yuck). Hope my opinion isn't too spicy.

      While undoubtedly heavily inspired by the GM 3800 "BOP" cars of the mid/late 1980s, the car shown is a Bruckell LeGran.
      The burnout only looks to have come from the rear tire because it happened to track in line with the front tire. The game's behavior is _extremely_ realistic, as great care was taken to get stuff like that right.

    Hopefully you don't mind me leaving two separate comments, but I wanted to talk about a couple of other things after reading the description.
    I also still employ some old computers in my daily life, mainly an Athlon XP 3000+ based machine that I use simply for playing MP3 files into my stereo system. Such a simple task, and windows xp/that old system work beautifully for it. It's a great way to keep it out of ewaste. As a gen z'er, it isn't older than *me*, but it's older than a couple of my friends!!
    I recently rebuilt my AMD Ryzen desktop computer, and I put it into an old Antec Performance-One P180 case that was manufactured sometime in 2005. The reason for this was probably something after your own heart: the "Be Quiet!" case I originally chose for my build did NOT have a spot for an optical drive. I wanted an optical drive, because I still use and burn optical media on a regular basis.
    It's amazing what kind of systems you can keep going with just swapping the hard disk for a solid state drive. Personally, as much as it goes against who I am (or at least used to be), I have gotten spoiled in that I don't employ machines that aren't *new* -- or at least, new-ish -- anymore, for my daily productivity. However, if I really needed to, I could scale back to the haswell build I have (once I would replace the broken CPU cooler) from 2014 and my old Lenovo Y510p also from then (both 4th gen i-series machines) and only really miss my Dell Latitude's thin and light nature and its battery life. You just don't need to upgrade as often.
    I'm glad to see you return to upload a video to RUclips, even if it's something short and silly like this. Your videos, along with channels in a similar "scene" to you (bbishoppcm, maxxarcade, vwestlife) are the channels that got me into computers and led me into studying engineering and computer science in my post-secondary education adventures.

      I haven't really been crazy about the Mac OS since the days of Snow Leopard. (In fact, when the good old early 2009 Macbook started to struggle with many aspects of its functionality, I parked it and went to Linux on a Dell Latitude D630 and Windows 8.1 on an Inspiron 660s. The latter is where I edit videos to this day -- I have found iMovie unusable ever since the 2009 version dropped.) I really wasn't all that interested in the Mac OS after Snow Leopard.
      In between then and now, I did find a very lightly used 12" Macbook Air (i7/8GB) from 2014 and another example of the early 2009 Macbook in the "old style" case with the nVidia 9400GM graphics.
      The M-series silicon on the other hand...it's nothing short of extremely impressive. I feel as though Apple really hit their stride in the mid-to-late 2000s with Steve Jobs still at the helm. While I feel they've declined in the years since, the competition isn't any better. (When I say this, I'm mainly talking of iOS versus Android. I find iOS and some of its limitations frustrating, but it's still better than the raging dumpster fire that is Android anything. Sorry Android users...I just can't.)
      If the budget is a concern, the original M1 SoC is still an incredible performer and you can almost pick one up for a song. The biggest question in my mind is how long Apple will support them with new OS releases.

  • @jamescollins6085

    A MacBook would be nice, but I've never been a fan of MacOS. The memory and storage upgrade pricing is very high compared to competitors, too. This is even with everything being integrated into one SoC taken into consideration.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  4 месяца назад +4

      I'm one of the many people who think that Mac OS 10.6 ("Snow Leopard") was the last decent release of the Macintosh system. Indeed, the asking price for memory and storage upgrades is pretty ridiculous -- and even more so that neither can be changed later when an upgrade is desired or in case of a failure. Were Apple the world class computer designer many people think they are, they would make a computer that was still very attractively designed while still having replaceable parts.
      All of that said, the performance and efficiency of Apple's M-series microprocessors is amazing. It is mainly for that reason that years after I parked my 2009 Macbook, that I bought into a current Apple computer.

      I do have a couple of ARM Chromebooks, mostly with MediaTek CPUs (Lenovo C330 and Flex 3 Chrome 11M836) and one from Qualcomm (the very rare Acer C741LT, which I don't think was actually intended for sale to the general public). They definitely outperform their Celeron counterparts easily. When AUE time comes around for them, I'd love to be able to run plain old Linux on any of them. I think that stands a decent chance of happening given time, and may already be possible for the C330.

    That's about the level of performance I expected from emulation. Any word on the temps or battery life doing this? I get about this level of performance from my GPD Pocket 3, but it gets rather hot and I only get about 2-3 hours of gameplay out of it. If I turn the graphics down a bit, it runs much, much smoother.
    Also, I've found that screen recording with desktop audio is ridiculously overcomplicated on MacOS - granted, the two newest Macs I keep around both run High Sierra, so this might have improved.
    I really like MacOS in general, but the hardware has always been a bit underwhelming. Wondering if maybe an Air would be better than the GPD Pocket.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  5 месяцев назад +1

      All I know for certain is that the computer gets rather warm all over and fairly hot in the vicinity of the M3 SoC. I haven't gone looking for or found anything that will report on the various temperature sensors I'm sure the computer has. The same for battery life -- all I can say for now is that it'll definitely take a hit. I'd hazard a guess that it'd stand between 3-4 hours of this at the very most.
      As I only did this out of pure curiosity -- in all truth I expected Crossover would crash spectacularly in the face of something as demanding as BeamNG and I have a more-than-decent computer to play it on "for real" -- I doubt I will perform in depth examinations of battery life. CoconutBattery seems like it can show a figure of power drawn in watts from the battery, and I plan to check on that while doing this.

Apple's at-least-somewhat-official stance is "don't put anything, not even a single piece of paper, between the display and keyboard". They've also strongly discouraged the use of keyboard covers or webcam shutters. I've replaced broken screens after people put papers in between the screen and keyboard.
      On the other hand, there was a day I had what could have been a major mishap with a stack of Macbook Air M1 computers I had been moving on a tall cart. Several slid off the stack -- yes, I really should have known better -- and landed at varying angles (sides, top, and bottom) on concrete from about five feet up.
      Oh, I was just sure I'd ruined my day and then some. I didn't even want to look, but I had to stop the panic from welling up or at least see how much music I would have to face. I would gladly pay that price again for all of the benefits that the M series processors bring to the table. Apple had always wanted to be independent on making their own chips, since the beginning, and there have been failures, including the PPC architecture, due to lack of software support and problems with reliability from what I know. I think they have now finally nailed it with the M chips. And thanks to those chips, I should say there are now more rationale than before for anyone to get the MBA as a starting point, since the Pros are more geared towards the high end market. However, in regards to the customisation options for the Air, 8GB should be illegal. the trouble with a new processor tech over x86 is that it renders older systems obsolete and unable to run newer software. if the industry abandons x86 as a whole, not only apple - it will really suck.
    overall improved performance doesn't matter for most - i'm running a quad core athlon ii from 2010, it does everything i need and then some. only pro video editors and other content creators really benefit.
    for games, who needs slightly better graphics - i don't play games any more anyway.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  5 месяцев назад +1

      The overwhelming majority of computer games won't hold my attention, or even get the first play from me. I don't think it's fun to follow someone else's prescribed notion of what's entertaining. It's also inexcusable that so many game designers didn't care at all about making the physics realistic. BeamNG Drive and Rigs of Rods before it both did, and I could do whatever stupid thing I wanted to. The realism is impressive. I'm still dreaming all manner of crazy car stunts -- I've probably ruined thousands of Bruckell LeGran cars by this point. (I am absolutely guilty of being easily amused.)
      I'm a big believer in the practice of high if not extreme value computing. Many of the computers I use daily are old enough to be in high school (~15 years) by this point. The later Wolfdale Core 2 Duo processors are an entirely decent existence (if not more) and will run many contemporary operating systems very well. I have long thought the Celeron was a brilliant microprocessor for the money.
      I'd argue that the passage of time alone renders old systems obsolete more so than a different processor architecture. Eventually, one also has to consider the failures that can happen as time wears on. Not all can be repaired without heroic efforts, and sometimes not even then. One can certainly continue using the latest software that ran well on their older system, if it meets their needs. The biggest sticking block I can think of is that of web browsers. There's a place where technologies are in a high state of flux, heavily interpreted code exacts an ever increasing performance penalty and it can be said that one person, if not a few, just may not be able to keep up. (Cameron Kaiser stated he was overwhelmed in maintaining TenFourFox toward the end in the face of this complexity.)
      (Random notes: I still have and sometimes use the PowerPC Mac mini I bought brand new in 2005 or so. It'll be twenty years old soon! At that age, though, I wouldn't trust it to be a daily driver with my data. The mind, it boggles! I've also been shocked by the stuff that gets tossed into the technology recycling at work -- much of it is nicer stuff than I use on a daily basis!
      Those who bought a Power Macintosh G5 of any sort would probably disagree with the above paragraph. They got screwed by Apple, and left with white elephants.)
      If anything, I would describe my computing environment as one that keeps an eye to all of the past, present and future. Older computers and software really did do some things better. Not everything that's newer is better. As for the future, sometimes it's nice to have something that's truly new and specced out the way one wants it. (Okay, I did want 24 GB of RAM with this computer, but it wasn't a deal breaker at the sale price.) I work hard for the things I have (not that anyone was questioning that, nor am I saying they did) and sometimes it's nice to see something tangible from that.
      This has almost certainly gone on too long and probably doesn't quite say what I wanted it to...which is basically that my regular computing environment is set up to try and get the most that every computer has to offer for as long as it is feasible to do so.

      And for more in context, my main pc is from 2015 with updated graphics and m.2 PCIe card. The biggest problem is by far the speed but, as you said the browser! I can only run windows 10 on it, once they disabbandon it in 2025, chrome and others follow soon and I have to have a new pc even the quad core speed is still very fine today…

      @@kgfgfg1 Yes, I do. In fact, I want to revisit some of the videos I made in the past about various PS/2s. There are also projects I want to get on video -- such as getting my ActionMedia II up and running again -- and others I need to return to (setting up the SCSI disk in the Model 95).
      I agree that it doesn't make sense to try and start a PS/2 collection. Maybe that's even true of many vintage computers. The hobby has become a lot more expensive as the systems and options have become scarce. I still have a decent collection, and some spare parts, but unless something falls into my hands (a recycling rescue), I'm not growing my collection any longer.

      @@uxwbill the issue is not always just not being able to run new software due to being for a different instruction set on older equipment, it is being able to run old software on newer equipment. emulation won't work for everything. it's an issue with os support drivers, being able to run older os on newer equipment.
      it's an issue for businesses that have custom done accounting software and other programs that costs north of $10k to replace and won't run on newer os's and certainly not on software programmed for x86 natively.
      budget aside, i went with used equipment for my current system for compatibility. wanted to be able to run every os from windows xp to windows 10 and it can do it. still has IDE and floppy connectors that i use, supports a regular pci dialup modem for fax. but powerful enough to be main machine and can always add sata3 and usb 3 with pcie cards if needed.
      I dread a motherboard failure because one way or another will not be able to get as good of a balance between compatibility with old stuff and performance. even this setup took several weeks to find on ebay back in 2017.
      As a rule no new equipment for me - it stinks and would hate to only be able to run windows 10 or 11 due to no driver support for anything older.

    I don't know that the sedan looks like Hongqi Automobiles from China inspired by Oldsmobile, Daimler Chrysler, or any brands. 😂
    I'm just kidding. Fun fact: In 1958, Dongfeng sedan was inspired by Simca from France. They made the sedan look like one but not exactly matching the description. They called Dongfeng sedan, "Golden Dragan." It's really weird how they made the sedans are not made to last for the door latch, thrunk latch, and making cars shaking unruly, making people motion sickness. Not only that, but also the engine fails, and I think it can go at 25 to 30 miles until it breaks down. Both Dongfeng Sedan and Hongqi Automobiles are funny quality built for what it wasn't made that well. Hongqi is Chinese word of Red Flag or Red Bloodline. The car is 1958 Dongfeng CA71.

    What was your rationale for buying a 13 inch MacBook Air vs a 15 inch model? I’m one of the Mac specialists at my IT job, and when I saw that Apple came out with a 15 inch MacBook Air, that pretty much became the go-to model I recommend to people who are looking for a Mac but don’t know which one to buy. Did you want more of a “netbook” size laptop that made the 15 inch model too big for that case?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  5 месяцев назад +1

      When it comes to laptops, I don't want a "movie screen". Portability is basically *the* most important factor. In that same vein, I have never understood why 17" "aircraft carrier" laptops were/are a thing and people would actually buy them. If they made one smaller than 13", I might well have gone that route.

      @@uxwbill I agree with you about 17 inch laptops. However, I have noticed that 15 inch Windows laptops seem to be very popular among our team because a lot of them have a numpad.
      My work laptop is a 14 inch Windows laptop, and I think that’s the best balance between screen size and portability. I would consider 13 or 15 inch laptops for personal use though, especially since those size MacBook Airs are cheaper than the 14 inch MacBook Pro.

      @@ENB2002 Call me silly, weird or whatever...a separate numpad on a laptop isn't a selling point to me. I'd even go so far as to say I definitely don't want one so equipped. (Not that the "hidden" numpad in a regular laptop keyboard is by any means a stellar example of usability...for those times when one wants or needs to input scan codes directly, it's a real pain.)
      My work computer is a 14" Thinkpad and I'm perfectly happy with its size. They've been handing out a larger HP model as a replacement. I don't want one because it's too darn big and...well...HP. They really are kind of junky and certainly haven't held up as well as the Thinkpads that came before.

It was at that point I was greatly chagrined to learn that the cars are "transparent" to the opposing player.
