I think low confidence in newer cards has also partially fueled the resurgence of prices in older ones. Modern cards are really low. Standard is non-existent. Magic always seem to have a equilibrium in its prices, and it's just crumbling away, all the value is pouring into reserve list cards, old masterpieces etc.
yes and Grandpa Rudy needs a balance but its too late for Wizards to reach a Pokemon type level ..Blizzard should come back with Warcraft and put the nail in them but they have more incompitent people there than that at Wizards
Yugioh and Flesh n Blood should push hard to take some more market from them, turn Magic into Garbage Pail Kids where only the 1st edition(Alpha/Beta) is worth money in the future
The scarcity of the older cards that are in good condition is far higher then newer sets because of the amount of printing, so older card prices they will always rocket up as demands rises.
Part of the uptick in reserved list prices is from players who play commander (aka edh). For example take Orvar, All-Form. Hes from Kaldheim. Because of him Whim of Volrath shot up greatly in price. Like were talking going from a $2 card on the reserved list to a $30 one practically overnight. And since its a reserved list card, it won't get reprinted, so Whim of Volrath is just gonna keep climbing. As you will have these old cards that not many people cared about before suddenly spiking because of some brand new interaction with a card from a new set. Which in turn has sort of created commander speculators who are looking at the reserved list and wondering what could spike next.

This is an accurate, honest and straight forward description of events I've heard from Rudy, perhaps with one little Russian roulette threat of him pulling the trigger and releasing his RL inventory thrown in. Coming from someone who works in finance, this was spot on. Very well said Rudy. I'd love to hear you talk about portfolio theory, and why buying and holding a broad collection is a better bet than a narrow holding of many copies of only a couple of cards. Not something most of your audience thinks about, given your videos of failed buyouts.
If you have a reserved list card that increased 5x in price, the 10% per year increase in the future means you will add 1x to your initial equity every 2 years which is a tremendous gain.
I've bought a lot of collections a few years back. And I payed only $10 to $20 a box and or binders. With most cards in light to no play condition. And a lot of the cards just over the few years have gone up into the $100s and more.
I love your videos man. There are so few people in the world who don't just share information, but how they think. Information only goes so far, the thought processes are what make people adaptive.
I'm super casual into collecting cards but my retro gaming collection boomed over the last few months with people selling stuff they probably shouldn't have.
I was thinking to sell my collection a couple of month ago. Geez, every time I look at prices, it just goes up and up. $1000+ revised dual lands...wtf. I will wait more... EDIT: just for fun I looked for Fallen Empire boxes... cheapest is a $675 on ebay... my god.
Side hustle Timmy here. I diversify and sell other stuff too. I used to deal in coins, more value/liquidity than MTG and even slimmer profit margin and less volatility. Now that I netted a great equity from Reserved/Revised, I'm buying into cheap non reserved list eternal cards now. I'm going to get hosed 10-20% from reprints and know it well. With my next unneeded government stimulus, going to get cases of current sets, throw down an extra k or two of my own and ride it out.

Rudy I'd be interested to hear a video with your general thoughts on the economy and where things are going. There's a full spectrum of divergent opinions right now among the "experts" which all sound plausible and have good arguments for deflation, inflation, strong dollar, weak dollar, stock crash, gold/silver mooning, or stocks recovering and resuming the melt-up, Crypto mooning, Crypto being a scam, etc. The money printing and debt levels are just off the charts now but supposedly there's no inflation and the fed is worried about deflation (i presume because other countries will print even more, and the USD will be "better" than all the other shit currencies). Personally I have no idea and I'm trying to hedge a bit more instead of being mainly equities.
The giant stores rely on their big events to restock inventory, and the pandemic removed that avenue for them. It seemed inevitable that they'd have to raise prices, or come up with gimicks like the "send in your shit and we'll sell it on commission for you". I think they're hurting for supply.
I only have 2 reserved list cards, Opalescence and Scorched Ruins. The last one is skyrocketing right now, I bought one in january for €18. The cheapest right now in near mint is €45. Not bad. Holding because I love playing the card! Love ya rudy

I've slowed down on buying but I still think the big problem with the crash thesis is where would the money go if it leaves vintage? As long as we're doing Triple Rick and Morty Masters it's not all flooding back into new releases. I don't think people sank thousands into vintage magic just to exit the hobby after 6 months. You got a few sellers but buy list and stimmy support that will eat up their supply. I think if you're looking for the vintage bear market you're gonna have to hibernate until at least 2022.
RE: Working for a 20% gain: That's still good. If you can minimize the downside risk, whether you earn 20% or 200% is just a matter of scale. Keep in mind that parking money in a mutual fund etc nets at best 10% a year, you're putting in a little extra legwork and getting a much better return. You should still have a few assets you're holding long, but nothing wrong or shameful about swing trading, provided you can avoid the risk.
Its interesting to see how overwhelmingly SUCCESSFUL big stores are going to be after their actions in 2020. Rudy doesn't really present the situation like this but its 100% true. These stores are now profiting $300 per dual land where last year it was a tiny fraction of that. Yes...buying into that inventory is more expensive but the profit margins have skyrocketed. What Rudy seemingly presents as a 'mistake' in the panic selling of 2020 is not only the best thing that's ever happened to diamond hands but also the big name stores. As Rudy says retracement won't matter here either in the long term and that's where stores are focused. As always the only people who lose here are people who want to play the game using these old cards.
