Jerry Clower was my boys Sunday School teacher when i was growing up in Yazoo City, Miss back in the 60's before he became a famous comedian. What a great example of a truly good man. We were 8 to 14 year old boys and he had such a loud voice we were kinda afraid of him because he was so big and powerful. Big personality. Big man too. He had us boys sit by him in church after sunday school in the second pew right in front of the pastor, Brother Yates. And he would scare us when he would yell out an Amen! at the best parts of the sermon. Good childhood memories for me. What a blessing and a great example he was for us. I've never forgotten it. I count myself lucky that i was there. God Bless you Mister Clower! I'll never forget you. Thank you so much! Rest in peace sir.

Jerry Clower was the funniest stand-up comedian that ever lived and has YET to say a single cuss-word !!! He was very eloquent, but he could talk just as Mississippi Country as you could get. He is one to pattern your career by. Never a fowl word, like most of the comedians do now a days. It just proves, you DON'T have to CUSS to be funny !!!
    THANK YOU FOR POSTING

I absolutely love Jerry clower. My grandpa had a bunch of old Jerry clower cassettes and I would listen to them whenever I could, and they were hilarious but this one is probably the best I've heard of his. Rest in peace Jerry.

I remember too that you never sat at the table till all the grown folks sat down & if you were sitting in an the adults chair you got up & let them have it & Sunday dinners were the best dinners of the week & some Sundays churches would have all day singing & dinner on the ground the church ladies would bring their best bed sheets & the men would bring saw horses & plywood to make up tables & you'd go make you a plate after & only after all the grown folks got a plate & you'd eat on the ground on a quilt your mama brought or in the back of the truck on the tailgate of course you better bow your head & pray with everyone else before you ate that was manners or raisin' if you're country Southern Jerry Clower classics remind me of them days

Three will never be another like Jerry Clower. The fact he was absolutely hilarious and never once had to use profanity to make people laugh. I can sit here today and listen to Jerry and my kids will bust out laughing at his funny stories. He left a legacy that no one can ever match in my opinion.

Reminds me of my uncle talking about being the youngest of five children. Dad took the plate first and then passed it to Mom and then it went to the kids. As the youngest he always got the plate last so he always got the smallest piece of chicken. He didn't dream of growing up and having a career or a family - his dream was simply to be grown up so he could have the big piece of chicken!

I love listening to him. My father is a great storyteller just 3 years younger and grew up in Kentucky farming. I've heard Daddy tell a few of the same jokes. My boys are 19 & 14 they love listening to him as well. Jokes they can repeat at school or church.

Southern born and southern bred here. Old South that is. Don't much like what's happening with the new south. 55 now and I still won't take the last piece of whatever from the dish. I also stand and wait till everyone else is seated and do not serve myself before anyone else. That, however, could be a throwback to my days as an infantry squad leader when my first responsibility was to insure my men were taken care of first.

+The Self Sufficient Life Most Southern people of my generation recall how men went to the table first and were fed. Then the women and children ate. Sometimes, if there was a lot of company, (usually Sunday dinner) the women ate and THEN the children. I remember standing in the doorway between the kitchen and dining room and watching the fried chicken pieces disappear. There were times when no chicken was left by the time "us youngens" sat down and it was then we all swore that when we grew up and had kids EVERYONE would eat at the same time! And we kept our promises.

    • @10yearvet
      @10yearvet 8 лет назад +2

+KyHollowMama I never knew anyone that would do that. Though there may have been a
separate table for the children if there were too many people everyone
sat down at the same time and God help us if we didn't come when called
and Granddaddy got a hold to us. No, he didn't whip us but the look he
gave was worse than a whipping sometimes. Yes, we knew that some people
did what you experienced. You don't want to know what my grandparents
called the people that would do that to their children.

It seems that people don't teach their kids respect, manners, things that were expected when I was growing up. Example, If I hear my daughter address an adult without a, "Ma'am" or "Sir" - there's an issue.

I just stopped by to say my dad was a huge fan of Clower. My dad admittedly was raised in a wild family with a lot of loud people, brothers and sisters and his mom (my grandma) was loud. My dad never said it but clearly an unsophisticated family and I’m sure when he listened to Clower talk about the “Ledbetter family” he felt like the stories were similar to his family. The more outrageous the people were in the story the more my dad laughed.

Hard to tell where the real story ends and the jokin begins. My favorite is Ol Slant Head. I laughed so hard I had to pull over. I need to listen to more of his stuff. Lord what has happened to us. Seems as thought we are losing folks like this daily. Soon it’ll be just us left and the food will be on the losing end of things. But I bet God is rolling off his throne with these stories. And he’s heard them before.

Jerry Clower was an agrichemicals saiesman in the South whose everyday conversation, point of view and humor prompted people to encourage him to perform. Eventually, that career overtook his "day job," and he went full time as a humorist. Is it Southern? Not really--virtually the same thing happened to a Jewish salesman from Manhattan's garment district, Myron Cohen. Both of them deadly at close range.
