I felt a real calling to watch your videos today. I'm not jewish, i but realize I'm in the same state you were in. i used to cry my self to sleep, and i could never leave my mind blank or i'd get a panic attack at the thought that i was finite. it still does happen, I'm not going to lie i almost freaked out again an hour ago.but watching your videos has made me fall in love with judiasm. i suddenly feel like the things you say are lifting a great weight off my back and make the world seem like it makes more sense.

Thank you for this. Your honesty and story have really touched me. No, so many of us more secular Jews really don't understand the Othodoxy as well as we think we do. Your clips clarify so much in such a witty and articulate way. I love you, Honey. From such a tragic day, you have grown roses. Mazel Tov, Sweetheart.

You are such an inspiration, not only to those who are not yet religious, but to me, someone who was born into a frum Orthodox family, and raised with Jewish values. Thank you for continuing to inspire me with every video you post!

Allison, I’m so sorry that you went through something like that at such a young age.
It’s terrible that such a tragedy should ever happen at all.
I just found your channel this evening and subscribed right away.
I’ve always been interested in Jewish culture since I was a child.
I grew up in a Jewish neighborhood and my love affair with Jewish culture was born.
I’m a Christian and the more that I learn the deeper my understanding grows for God’s Word from both perspectives.
Thank you for creating this informative channel.

First off, the tikkun olam thing is about improving this world, not about the next. Most of the Jews I grew up with didn't necessarily believe in God or something after this world. There's for SURE a value in improving this world, but I wanted to surround myself w/pple who also thought beyond this world. Of course there are non-thinking Orthodox Jews, but the ones who inspire me are both doing good deeds AND thinking about spirituality. It's possible to have both!

I love your channel. Although I do not practice Judaism (I could be ancestrally), I loved this video because it reminded me of experiences shared by many great spiritual teachers throughout history. This one specifically reminded me of the Buddha who was raised in a perfect world, but when he was confronted with the realities of suffering and death, he turned his world upside down and found compassion for all beings. Thank you for sharing your journey.

I have just stated watching you I found you from (Mayim Bialik), but I am really sorry, but also glad that you started this Sorry for what happened to you, but glad that you found your way I again am not Jewish, but what you said about the reason you started this (post) I think is great because what you said about people not understanding or think that all Jews are 1 way I am Catholic, and every time something bad happens in the church, (and i'm not every happy when something bad happens to anyone) But then people say (it's all of them) are like that, and it's just not true. But i'm really sorry for going on, but again thank you I am really enjoying these and learning a lot, I just hope that I can find all your post and I need to find out how many there are! Again thank you and peace

Wait - I didn't say good deeds don't last beyond this world. I said that no one in my (secular) world was even thinking (or talking) about why we were here and which of our actions might last beyond the here and now. When I started hanging out with Orthodox Jews, I found many more people who thought of these issues and who were working towards achieving them.

I had a similar realization at an early age. My father was a very loving father, we were very close and I lost him when I was 11. He and I read the bible together since I could read and we often discussed it. After he died I noticed that people would often fuss about little things that weren't worth it and would rob each other of their peace, and that life was too short and precious to waste on foolishness.
After that, unfortunately I stopped reading the scriptures and regularly praying for about 14 years. Yet, I never lost sight of it's precepts, especially of the commandments and I was often restrained through their knowledge as they came to mind.
It wasn't until I was in my mid 20s that I had a spiritual awakening and realized that I am mainly in this world to impart the love and knowledge of God to a lost world (giving Him glory).

I thought I was saving my younger brother from a bunch of fanatics and instead found in Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah who is the hope of Israel and light of the gentiles who is soon coming to judge the kingdoms of this world and to rule from the throne on David.

    Very well said Alison!
As a Hassidic Jew working in the tech industry, I get some interesting questions and comments.
I had a coworker who was very hostile to me. He once got drunk at a company party, and he came over to me and asked, why do you people go to Iran?
It took a while to convince him, that I have nothing to do with those lunatics. After that we had the best relationship.

When I was young, just starting in life, I had a job in gas station. When I was off duty I was out driving around town. I live in a small town. The police had shut down the local town square. There was a small apartment build in the square. A man, typically having been umemployeed for a long time, had taken his live in girl friend hostage w/ a shot gun there was a report of him having shot her but she was still alive. He was held up for a long time but eventual the police broke in & shot him & saved the lady.
Only a few days later I met the lady in the station where I worked. Her hand was gone, it was wrapped up in bandages & the bones of the wrist were pinned together. I wanted to say something to her, I searched for words of comfort for her but what can you say to such a thing. I remember the embarrassed self conscious expression on her face. I have to wonder what became of her.

My community are "Talmudic"Jews too & none of us spit at pple! The vast majority of Jews who follow the Talmud would NEVER spit at pple! It's actually Judaism. We're supposed to love our neighbor as ourselves. There are, unfortunately, some extremists within the Orthodox world - although in my opinion, they're not even Orthodox when they behave the way they do. They have a fear of outsiders based on European anti-Semitism from a couple generations ago but most religious Jews are not like this.

  • @freethinkingjew7335

Thanks for clarifying.:) I'm still surprised by your experience, though. In my experience it's the non-Orthodox Jews who are the most concerned about their actions lasting beyond the here and now (tikkun olam?) and are the most active in all the Jewish federations and organizations that work towards achieving these goals. It's just that the "beyond the here and now" that's' important to them isn't the next world, but rather creating a better present and future in this world. No?

people like your aunt encountered, unfortunately, exist but this is not what being an observant Jew is about. we have no commandment to police each other and we are prohibited from spitting and judging and being rude. you should just know that many, many Orthodox Jews are completely against what these women did.

    Hi Allison,
Your series IMHO portrays a segment of Orthodox Jewry only but not all Orthodox Jewry which spans the Chassidishe world to Modern Orthodox. If you would like to be fair, can you investigate life in the Chassidishe world including the Ultra - Orthodox, regular Orthodox Jews and also Modern Orthodox? If you get a chance to do your segment in Israel, perhaps visit the Charedim who live in RBS Bet and interview their perspective on Judaism as well.
    Thank you.

I had a group of aunts who were Jewish(regular observant Jews, for lack of a better term)...and in the 70's they went on a tour of the holy land...they were wearing sleeveless dresses since it was hot out, and they were literally ambushed by a group of ultra conservative Jewish women, who tried to cover my aunts arms and said bad words.
I still want to go to Israel, regardless. For the paying of respect to my heritage, and I am a born again Christan so I want to do the Jesus walk.

LOL. It isn't always easy to determine those things today. If people came b/f WWI Poland didn't exist. After WWII the Ukraine & Belorussia were just another part of Soviet Union. How can you tell w/o a degree history where a border laid at some point. When I was a child my fathe always said we came from "Czechoslovakia." Little did I know that didn't really mean very much, Czechoslovakia didn't exist then either. A very strange 100yrs of history.
