- Here is the first of two episodes where I get to spend some time with Steve Hill, a great guitarist who I have admired over the years. I have always wanted to get a chance to talk about guitar with Steve, and explore his very unique technique and language.
We talk about having both been young blues musicians coming up at the same time in Montreal in the '90s, we talk about our picking techniques, and in particular Steve's very unique way of picking with his fingers. We talk about playing in open position in the key of B in standard tuning, Steve shows me the various open tunings he uses, and we end with a Muddy Waters inspired jam!
Steve Hill has a new album out now called Dear Illusion available here:

We had minor technical issues with both the image and audio in some spots, so thanks in advance for your understanding, but I don't think it will get in the way with enjoying this very cool musical moment!
Stay tuned for part 2 of this guitar session with Steve Hill, there's lots more guitar talk to come, and another fun jam, where we exchange guitars, which I particularly enjoyed!
Un énorme merci à François Péloquin pour la conception de ces épisodes, et pour le tournage, Stéphane Grimm pour le mix audio, et Stéphanie Grégoire pour le montage de ces épisodes avec invités.
Jordan Officer is a jazz, blues, country guitar player, singer, producer, educator, touring and recording artist from Montreal. In these video podcasts he will be looking at guitar technique, language, ideas for improvising, gear, talking to some of his favourite guitar players, talking about his influences, and more. New videos will be dropping every two weeks starting Feb 2022 so stay tuned.

Cool Enzo. It was a fun show!
I think Steve and I jamming together for the first time really, after all these years, was the best part! :-) And there'll be more of that in part two! But it was also really cool to check out some of the particularities of Steve's technique and language, which I've always been fascinated by.
I met Steve at the Iron Wood in Calgary when I was playing rhythm guitar for Jack Semple. Steve was on the same bill. He was great!
Amazing!

Thumb down strokes only. You end up with a more horizontal rather than vertical approach. And The Claw for clucking the boogie. Oh ya, thank for the interview! Steve Hill is the stuff for certain!!!
