  • How to sing ON MY OWN from Les Miserables | Live Voice Lesson. Voice Lesson starts at 1:00 minute. At 5:42 minutes the instructor teaches me how to hit the high note at the end of the song. "The world is full of happiness that I have never known."
This was a live voice lesson back in 2013 I had with an incredible voice instructor. Yes...the footage is not great, I wish I would have placed the camera somewhere else in the room but you can see her technique and how she helps me sing that high note at the end of the song. She also helped me find a powerful mix while singing high without sounding like I'm shouting or using an unsafe technique to get a powerful high note. I hope you find this educational or helpful if you are also learning how to sing On My Own.
"This is the most important song for the role of Éponine. In the song, she expresses her unrequited love for the character Marius, and how she dreams of being at his side but knows his love is for Cosette and not for her."
    - Cherish
    On My Own Lyrics:
    On my own
    Pretending he's beside me
    All alone
I walk with him till morning
    Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
    And he has found me
In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever
And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us
    I love him
But when the night is over
    He is gone
    The river's just a river
    Without him
    The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers
    I love him
    But every day I'm learning
    All my life
    I've only been pretending
    Without me
His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
    That I have never known
    I love him
    I love him
    I love him
    But only on my own

Thank you so much for posting this! I'm joining a production for Les Misérables in September and I'm really aiming for the part of Éponine. This helped me reach the higher notes and add more emotion in the song! Thank you for posting this! :)

Thank you so much for your comment! I was going back and forth if I should post this or not because the footage wasn't great but the instructor really did teach me how to hit those high notes with correct technique. I hope you get the part of Eponine!! Best of luck at your audition.

I want to learn this song, I've always loved it. Thanks so much! I can't belt as hard as you, I sound more like the original version. Even so, this helped me so much as a guideline! Xx

Is this what they teach Americans? The reason you couldn’t hit the tops was because your support wasn’t very good was very shallow.
Your vowel placement was ok, but without a good support for your “heavy” chest voice, your vocal folds became constricted, resulting in that sound.
There is nothing wrong with a heavy “chest” voice. It’s the support that matters. If you screw that up, you are in trouble.
