One “luxury” I always backed when winter camping was a hot water bottle. Didn’t weight much and the sheer bliss of having warm feet to go to sleep with made that little extra weight more than worth the carry.

I always built a snowbreak around the tent as much as I could. It provides insulation especially if it's windy at night. I also built a "directional" fire so the heat would keep the tent from freezing inside.

Many moons ago, a group of seven of us skied across Auyuittuk National Park (Baffin Island). It took us 11 days, we started with 135 lbs of gear each on sleds that we pulled. For meals, we each had a wide mouth stainless steel thermos that we would dump the dry goods into and add the boiling water...this kept it warm and was easy to eat from. We would typically make our lunches with boiling water we had for breakfast...even in those cold temps our lunches were will quite warm 3 - 4 hours later! To clean the thermos, we simply used snow and ice to rinse it out. If necessary we further cleaned the thermos at supper time with boiler water. This is a way better method then using the foil packs that the food comes in!

One other thing with the hand warmers and such. Bring some string and spring loaded clips. You can hang a couple hand warmers in the tent for extra heat.

Thanks for the winter camp Slim. I used to winter camp. I would take 2 plumbers candles with me to "heat" the tent. Put the candle in a metal cup for fire protection and light it once I got inside the bag. Remember to blow it out before retiring. Light the candle about 1/2 an hour before crawling out in the morning for the idea of warmth.

Thanks for meeting the challenge and staying another night I am glad the weather and the meal was kind to you. This shows a great alternative to Abner for winter exploring and overnight stays in the wilderness - I also love how neatly everything was able to fit onto your sled. Your tent looks very compact to pack but waterproof and roomy with adequate useful space for a single user.
I have to add it is lovely to see snow when sweltering through a hot summer night in Australia. :)

I’ve had a lot of experience sleeping outside in the winter. I’m too damn old now but as a younger guy I used to love it. I figured out a way to stay toasty warm in my tent without much effort. I always brought with me, a metal 4 gallon bucket and a 1 gallon metal bucket. I would start a fire and get it good and hot. I then used to place a dozen or so rocks @5-7” in diameter. ( round river rocks work best)
They would be placed directly into my fire and remain there until bed time. I would place the rocks into the larger metal bucket and surround the smaller metal bucket with the rocks as well. The bucket was safely brought into my tent and elevated off the floor with a few patio blocks ( or sand if it’s available). The temperature inside the tent was as cozy as can be even in below zero temps. The bonus was the smaller 1 gallon bucket in the middle of the 4 gallon bucket. Filled with water and a cover it gave a great supply of water for tea or coffee plus the ability to use boiler bag foods.
Those rocks went into that bucket RED HOT and as they slowly cooled down over the course of 6-8 hours it kept me warm and toasty. Give it a try it works great!!!
    Great video too!!!
    👍🏻✌🏻🇺🇸

The great thing about camping in the winter is that even places that you have been to before look totally new in the snow. I just did an overnight in snow in New Mexico. The following day the sun was bright in a blue sky and I was rewarded with a beautiful hike up a mountain. Breathtaking.

Thanks for Part 2. I was pretty sure you’d stay for the reasons mentioned. Because my hubby gets too cold for winter camping I haven’t gone. But you have inspired me to check out the local mountaineer club for others to go with.
I’m with you on the campfire. Sparks have a way of putting holes in outdoor gear and the freezing-on-one-side-and-baking-on-the-other experience is more unpleasant than keeping on warm clothes.

I really enjoyed the two parts, Slim. Now and again it's good to get out of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves. Nowadays I'm into overland camping but I do miss the days of trekking on unknown trails to see what's over the mountain or around the bend. With 60+ years of exploring on five continents I 'm finding it difficult to give up my backpacking gear and just need to hit the trails now and again. Slim, you may want to consider getting yourself a long titanium spoon or spork for those dehydrated meals. Walmart sells a UCO utensil that has a fork on one end and a spoon on the other making it easy to eat out of those packages. For my adventures I love preparing my meals at home, dehydrate them, place them in freezer Ziploc bags and actually cook over an open campfire. Nothing like a steak dinner with an adult beverage and sitting by a warm camp fire. I admire your will and attitude..amazing what a positive attitude will accomplish.

Use to minimalist camp a lot in my younger years. Grew up in Northern Wisconsin, lived in Nebraska, Texas, Korea, and now live in Oregon. Camped at least 4 or 5 times a year, in each location. 2 years back was my last winter camp trip. After waking up to sub freezing temps and the tent buried under the snow, I said enough. I went out and bought a Rockwood A122S. Even though I can't go to some of the places I use to hike into in the winter. Returning to a warm trailer after a day out hiking is a pleasure that can't be described.

I enjoyed camping as a boy scout, even in deep Sierra Nevada snow but somewhere about my 30's I decided no more sleeping on the ground, and that was way back when canned food was about as much convenience as you could have. This two part series, which I enjoyed as I do all your videos, confirms I made the rights decision. Great video Slim! Now thats real camping in winter! Were doing Westport, Wa on the Pacific Ocean ( no snow) this month. A nice warm 45 degrees!! Haha!! First winter trip!!! I agree, we all need a challenge..we took 12- 3 day trips spontaneously last summer/fall , days each in our 6x12 cargo trailer rv. Mostly off grid. ..Yes, it was a huge challenge..But its the freedom of quietness, not any other people , the beauty of the spot you wake up to in the morning you found. Learning how to be self sufficient on the minimal budget .That keeps it interesting. Survivsl mode. Wouldnt change it for anything. Thats what attracts people to these videos. Backpacking can be an amazing and profound experience. Solo backpacking in remote areas can be even more amazing. It does, however, bring additional risks. You can be 1 turned ankle away from being stranded without help. Add to that the additional risks associated with snow camping and it is really important to be prepared. Personally I would not solo backpack into a remote area without a satellite emergency beacon locator. If you are hurt, and can't get yourself out, you can still get help. It is also a good idea to let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. If they don't hear from you by a certain date/time, they can send help. People should not be afraid to take on challenging adventures but it is comforting to know that a simple mishap, like breaking a foot/ankle doesn't have to become life threatening.

Slim I dreamed last night that you gave me a tour of your new camper. It was self built. A nice cozy little cabin on wheels made from pallet wood I think. Your little wood stove was in the corner and across from it a boxed bench/bed and at the other end was the kitchen area complete with a small chest freezer filled with frozen fish! Not sure what the outside looked like but the inside was homey!

That really inspired me to get out of my 'comfort zone'!

After the hot water has the freeze dried food “ready” cut the bag down short to be more like a bowl to eat from.

I'm glad the "snow eater" arrived for part 2....it's really the best part of Southern Alberta's winters.
