Brandon's always had the same strengths and weaknesses as a player. Strengths: decision making; staying safe; mix-ups; spacing. Weaknesses: putting consistent pressure on you and manufacturing clean openings.
Unless you are an overwhelmingly skilled offensive player, the simplest way to beat him is to play defensive and force him to be aggressive. He always prefers to take space and opts for safe pressure. We've always played very similarly, so I've always understood his play style. The problem with that playstyle is at the upper mid-tier of skill and higher, most players have solid fundamentals and decision-making but struggle against overwhelming aggression, so you end up playing other players' games too often and eventually lose.
Friendlies Johnny is very different from tournament/money match Johnny. Friendlies Johnny will be nonstop aggro and doesn't care. It takes him a little time to figure you out (unless he's very warmed up), but once he does it's a wrap unless you're a top 25 player (or a Puff). Tournament Johnny will play more defensive and play much much safer, making his defense far tougher to crack. And since his punish game is far better than most defensive players, his clean openings will go a lot further than your clean openings, there by putting a lot more pressure on you to create clean openings.
What really makes Johnny a special player is his defense, when he's really trying, is batshit insane. Once he identifies you're a defensive player who prioritizes space, he will simply outspace you and force you to whiff. He does this very creatively and is excellent at baiting out your habits. (You can see that in this set when, after the second time Brandon Forward Bd quickly to recover, Johnny wavelanded on the side platform of Yoshi's and missed his knee. A warmed up Johnny won't miss that, and he's incredible at not telegraphing that he has a hard read on your habit until he kills you for it. He's also great at making sure even if he misses his hard read you can't punish him for it.)
I've played both these players a lot (Johnny way more than Brandon). This was a good set.
