What about the L15 head gasket issues? You mentioned the more beefy L15 transmissions. In fact the L15 connecting rods are smaller and can handle less torque than the N/A K-Series ones. The L-Engine was initially designed as an N/A Engine for the Jazz/Fit. Honda came up later with the idea to turbocharge them but did not strengthen the parts. In stock form there is no issue. But it is not as tuneable as the K-Series was without these headaches.
The head lifting under boost is probably the biggest issue currently plaguing the L15. BUT there is a head bolt kit out there that helps considerably with that. And if you're going for more than 18-20 lbs of boost, that's the route to go. I do know the L15CA engines have revised bottom end. The connecting rods are a little beefier and are also tuned a little differently over the L15B. Hopefully my DE4 Integra lasts a long time...

I’m happy to see this because there’s so much negativity out there right now about the L15B7. It’s like since there’s the Type R, all of a sudden the L15 isn’t worth modding.
Years ago I was looking around a very popular Junk yard around here, and there it was an Rsx sitting complete with engine and tranny. I hesitated to grab it since I didn't have many tools on me. The next day I came back and someone had already chopped the whole front end off.
It's crazy though the k series with a few bolt ons are putting down j series numbers you would think J series would put down more horsepower with bolt ons
@@robertalicea5585 J series is (mostly) only SOHC after all (apart from the latest ones that aren't VTEC anymore). The 2GR from Toyota seems to be the ticket for V6 enthusiasts!

H22a4 with Darton mid sleeves. 👍 Yes, the Darton Mid leaves are not cheap but people have been slipping on the h22a4. You can get the block for 200 bucks. Also at the end of the day, this would be an all American built honda motor.
It is crazy to think that engine/car setup existed 34 years ago. It is also a shame Honda did not offer that engine in the USA straight from the factory. Honda would have took over the USA car market for performance vehicles. As soon as I did that same swap in my CRX I was immediately like WTF Honda? It's perfection.

K-swap is dying because of very unnecessary high prices. Got my JDM K24A shipped to my buddy’s shop for $800. I think for the same engine now is double what I paid.
Thank you for talking about axles at 12:28 in the video. (Hasport, Insane Shafts, Drive Shaft shop). Do you recommend those usual suspects for stock Hondas/Acuras? I find that Raxles rebuilds OEM axles and they can be more expensive than Insane Shafts and Acura dealer discontinued selling rebuilt OEM axles for the TSX. The axles from AutoZone have a wobble on hard acceleration.
I saw what I was told was your prototype 1.5 kit in a Canadian fellas integra at a local Phoenix track day! I'm also reasonably sure we have that exact crappy NRG wheel in our civic that Bryant put together 😅 thanks for the info Chris I was wondering about some of these things myself
Love it, I've got two complete k swaps in the garage..... 88 hatchback and 91CRX. Sitting in the back waiting. just picked up a 91 mr2 from a co worker
It's neat that swaps are becoming normal for the L series, especially considering their ubiquity, but it will never replace K series. You can't replace the best four cylinder ever made, a motor capable of ridiculous power numbers NA and turbo'd, with a motor that is designed almost exclusively for fuel economy. Performance wise, it's like comparing the the c6 z06 to a sbc.
This car is the sole reason for my purchasing my 2013 CRZ which I to in the near future will be case swapping which is the only reason I bought the car to do exactly what they did to this car.
Such a good explanation! I just saw a crz and integra swapped with the L15 at the Hondata booth and the Honda collection hall in Torrance today! I’m excited for this legal swap so I won’t hav to worry about getting state reffed on my ek or paying someone $500 to smog every two years!
I'm a 3rd gen Civic guy til death and I still want to put a J swap. Realism is that a manual L turbo would still get up and boogie and make me smile in the long term future.
K swaps aren't dead they are just way easier to do now OR people are buying civic where they don't need to swap them. Also the drift scene is in love with them as they make great power with minimal effort
Hopefully someone starts making cast k series blocks like PRP making cast RB blocks and heads. Would be cool to see BYP Racing in Aus do it but they're just a small shop.
Headstud upgrade while you’re there. Also a lot of that stemmed from CRV and Accord owners putting shitty fuel. It can happen on any L15B7 if you up the boost past ~23psi with a tune but the rule of thumb is to upgrade the head studs and never worry about it.

One more time I will post this just as info. Hi. I have DelSol with L15b7 with some tune. It produce easy 260hp/330NM. Respectfully I am going to have to disagree with the K series being obsolete and the L15 being the new K series swap. An alternative engine swap for newer model Honda platforms sure. But for a golden era 90's EF, EG, EK, DC2.... Sorry I definitely don't see it. And yes, it is true that Honda no longer makes an OEM K series cast engines and it's also true that those days of buying a complete B/K engine swap for cheap no longer exist, but that doesn't mean that the K series engine will no longer be reproduced. Just look at what 4Piston racing has done creating a brand new B16 race cast cylinder head and very soon, cylinder blocks. Same will happen with the K series platform just like how PRP racing has already manufactured a race cast RB26 cylinder head and soon to be cylinder blocks. In Thailand, Ichiban Racing has almost finished their race cast Toyota 2JZ cylinder head and soon complete long blocks. It's just the times, similar like when 50, 60, 70s muscle cars were extremely difficult to source parts and eventually aftermarket manufactures caught on and started creating OEM reproduction parts. People forgot in the 90-00's it was extremely difficult to restore your favorite classic muscle car and finding parts were near impossible. Today, you can build your favorite muscle car off a catalog. Down to a brand new complete body shipped to your door. Just the other day, there was a video I watched from Taiwan were these factories were recreating a new 60s Ford Bronco, VW Microbus and a host of other muscle car bodies. A perfect one to one clone reverse engineered. There's a huge market for these 90s Japanese cars and the same will be soon to follow. Just the other day was a release picture of a brand new AE86 body soon to hit the market for purchase. It's just the evolution of the times, and with modern technology we have now in our fingertips, I see a future with a lot of B series and K series reproductions engines from these these OEM+ restoration/ race car builds. No different than these muscle car reproduced engines.
as a tenth gen civic si owner i can tell everyone the L15 is fantastic. It's not a high rpm screamer but it makes great low end torque with great street manners and even better fuel mileage. If I would have read this comment 10 years ago i would have laughed at the absurdity.
I have a CR-Z that I kept. Is it harder to swap it from auto to manual with an L15 swap? Or am I better off finding a manual CR-Z? I personally love the body style of this car, and it’s becoming more rare nowadays
K and J series are my favorite Honda engines. I will never L15 swap my RSX-S when it dies out. Beside I had a 23 Si I hated the engine so much I sold the car.
I’d like a to see some aftermarket support for Honda’s R-Series engine, it’s got a lot of potential but the aftermarket support simply isn’t there. I’d love to see what these engines can do all motor or even boosted! And I’m talking high quality parts from reputable manufacturers! I’m surprised the Honda community basically forgot about this platform, I thought it would turn out like the d-series where people would just toss them in the beginning until finally experimenting with them and proving their worth.

I know I gave you crap for a few years about not adopting this swap quicker, but glad to see you guys embrace it and start pushing it forward. Some day my GD3 AutoX car will have an L15B7!
I have Non-Honda car that is about to hit 250k miles, car is still in great shape but you can't oem parts for it anymore and I am thinking of doing a Honda kswap motor and trans. This video helped a lot and gave me new ideas.
The Jseries has been gaining popularity in my region
It's crazy though the k series with a few bolt ons are putting down j series numbers you would think J series would put down more horsepower with bolt ons
@@robertalicea5585
Unless your turbo'ing the k, J has more torque. putting down 280tq and 306whp on my j36 na.
@@robertalicea5585 J series is (mostly) only SOHC after all (apart from the latest ones that aren't VTEC anymore). The 2GR from Toyota seems to be the ticket for V6 enthusiasts!
Ummm the J-series will make 300+ NA WHP with just bolt-ons and be reliable and pedestrian . You aren’t doing that with any k-series unless you open the motor.
@@goforbroke2 3.5L engine makes more power than 2.4L engine -- I'm shocked. 🙂
Loved the video !
Really was considering K-swapping my 10th gen si but now I’m about to L-swap into my 240!!
zc turbo builds will always hold a place in my heart.
What transmission do you pair on those? The 96 D series hydros?
H22a4 with Darton mid sleeves. 👍 Yes, the Darton Mid leaves are not cheap but people have been slipping on the h22a4. You can get the block for 200 bucks. Also at the end of the day, this would be an all American built honda motor.
All the turbo motors are American built
I love that motor.
I remember swapping my 89 DA1 Integra with a B16, then I swapped my 88 EF hatchback with a B16. That was 23 years ago. I used Hasport mounts for both.
I love my B16a in my 1990 Honda CRX...just too much fun and surprise the crap out of new car owners ! HA HA HA !!!
@@MrEliasdl It was available in the Civic SiR in a 1.6L configuration.
They go like rocket! I remember test driving one in the early 2000's.
I wish I had the money back then.
It’s because the CRX weighs 38 lbs 🤣
2.4l or 1.5. Choice is easy. displacement is king
I need to do sometime with my B18b1 had it stored away lost interest in it once I bought my accord v6 lol
18 years since I moved over to American v8 cars, and the CRV is still giving Honda builders good engines to build up... more things change, the more they stay the same. lol Cool video, my kid is getting interested in imports and curses me weekly for selling off my Acuras & Hondas circa 2005.
Thank you for your wisdom on this
Nice to see the tuner scene will continue into the future with these new engines
Cali smog lega?! Hell Yeah! Any shops in socal that are knowledgeable and familiar with L15B7 swap?
Groupngarage
My k24z7 was so much fun to drive in the 9th gen coup. Bone stock hfp civic that is. 👌
K-swap is dying because of very unnecessary high prices. Got my JDM K24A shipped to my buddy’s shop for $800. I think for the same engine now is double what I paid.
$1600 isn’t bad lol
I got my k24A2 from JDM Orlando 3 days ago for 820
Not sure what you are talking about
Supply and demand
Oil dilution has been a major concern with the L15
It's not. Minimal issue that was solved already.
@@DB-mq4soeven with the software update it’s still an issue. Injectors fail, head gaskets fail. Worst Honda engine ever.
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTSgod bless headstud upgrade kits and updated injectors that came out. The aftermarket is already there.
Just change your oil every 3k miles no worries😂
Thank you for talking about axles at 12:28 in the video. (Hasport, Insane Shafts, Drive Shaft shop). Do you recommend those usual suspects for stock Hondas/Acuras? I find that Raxles rebuilds OEM axles and they can be more expensive than Insane Shafts and Acura dealer discontinued selling rebuilt OEM axles for the TSX. The axles from AutoZone have a wobble on hard acceleration.
I love that my car came with a B16B, but man some more torque would be lovely
I saw what I was told was your prototype 1.5 kit in a Canadian fellas integra at a local Phoenix track day! I'm also reasonably sure we have that exact crappy NRG wheel in our civic that Bryant put together 😅 thanks for the info Chris I was wondering about some of these things myself
Love it, I've got two complete k swaps in the garage..... 88 hatchback and 91CRX. Sitting in the back waiting. just picked up a 91 mr2 from a co worker
Nice
I'd love to try an L15B7 swap in my EF CRX chassis, seems like a lot to figure out though 😅
K20 feels like 1990s Formula One tech you can find in the junkyard now
Id love to put one of these into my 91 hatch. Good power, actual torque, 6 speed trans, and it could be kept fairly quiet.
I have a CR-Z and i wasn't sold on the idea of swapping, until you said it was carb legal! Im definitely looking into the L15 swap
Dr. Charles was one of the 1st ones that I saw the K series swap in the Honda Vanagon, '03 at Irwindale.
This car is the sole reason for my purchasing my 2013 CRZ which I to in the near future will be case swapping which is the only reason I bought the car to do exactly what they did to this car.
The trend. How about the k20c4?
Such a good explanation! I just saw a crz and integra swapped with the L15 at the Hondata booth and the Honda collection hall in Torrance today! I’m excited for this legal swap so I won’t hav to worry about getting state reffed on my ek or paying someone $500 to smog every two years!
Right on!
Lower milage motors, more power than a K, not too much more cost wise... this sounds like a win and maybe the future for my 96 EK!
I ran my F22b 96 accord until the car died. I wish I had swapped a H22 when I had the chance. K series seems like so much work
Currently working on my civic with h23a vtec swap. Keeping it og!
If we only had these videos in the early 2000's when I was building my EJ8 lol
Love my K20z3 rebuilt with racing sleeves
There is a lot of issues with the L15’s with head gaskets and the turbo’s have internal failures
You cans till get K24A8 blocks from Honda as 4 piston does.
The way the world is going right now I would say a set of Fred Flintstone bicycle pedals?
Love it. I am definitely doing one of these in the near future!!
yep schooled, my smart coworker was catching on about l swaps and now vtec confirming the rumors for me
J series is the best and most ubiquitous swap motor. The lack of manual transmissions is the real problem.
I'm a 3rd gen Civic guy til death and I still want to put a J swap.
Realism is that a manual L turbo would still get up and boogie and make me smile in the long term future.
Rocking my b16a swap in my crx.
I had a 96 civic hb with a 96 B18c1 in 2002. I still have the original valve cover hanging in my garage.
I'm teaching my boy frame off restoration on a Chevy S10. We're swapping in the k24a2 with a s2000 transmission to keep it rwd.😃
Being in Japan the L15 is a fantastic option. The tax difference between a 1500cc and a 2400cc is huge. Really looking forward to more L15 information
Aren't those L15 turbo haven't a lot of head gasket issues? especially the crv and accord
Headstud upgrade while you’re there. Also a lot of that stemmed from CRV and Accord owners putting shitty fuel. It can happen on any L15B7 if you up the boost past ~23psi with a tune but the rule of thumb is to upgrade the head studs and never worry about it.
Is this the best channel on RUclips? I would say YES! So much fun to learn from Brain.
F18A, F18B, F20A, F20B, F22A, F22B, F23a…..many F series iron sleeve blocks variants out there that no one talks about! F trans & B trans with a kit available
Hey mate ... in Australia we don't get manual L17B would it be possible to adapt a kseries gearbox?
Should we be concerned about manual transmission availability with the L15 due to less and less being sold in each generation?
Would love to see the L15 swapped on the 8th gen civic and see how it compares.
@VTECAcademy there is still time for a J-series Honda CR-Z would be 1st in the world i believe :3 good to be back baby!!!
Growing up i was a honda boy and had 3 integras, all were stollen so wemt to audi 😂. But I personally always loved the H series when it came to na motors, but im seeing H series hatches running 8 second quarter miles and its so satisfying to see
Still rocking a dual over head cam d series. D16a1
K is still the way i am not a fan of turbos i like it N/A the L15B7 has problem with oil dilution thats why a lot of them are in the yard you still have to fixed them before you swap it.
I got a 7th gen accord 2.4l k24a4 which is not the best k24 at all but with a magnaflow exhaust and a intake resonator delete, its fun
Looking forward to the L15b7 swap....in my lotus Elise. Why not?
I'm still rocking the 4F and 6Vs.
One more time I will post this just as info. Hi. I have DelSol with L15b7 with some tune. It produce easy 260hp/330NM. Transmision with LSD put this 205/50/15 Toyo R888 tires and all car is like a new Honda from 2023. We make this swap year ago. I can recomend this to all of you who want to have not super fastest Honda on the street, but great, daily with a lot of fun. I did a lot of K20 swaps, B16, B18c6 and other for different hondas. But this idea to put 1.5 turbo was best idea, trust me.
Came here to say pretty much what you said.
Wait, boxster in the background? Kswap?
Scrolled all the way until I found someone asking the same thing I want to know :). Is that Boxster honda swapped?
FINALLY! Been waiting for this video!
as a tenth gen civic si owner i can tell everyone the L15 is fantastic. It's not a high rpm screamer but it makes great low end torque with great street manners and even better fuel mileage. If I would have read this comment 10 years ago i would have laughed at the absurdity.
what an awsome video! Thank you!
Drag that mark 1 dub in the shop Brian, I'm ready to see 2 platforms meet!
As a Honda tech, this is exciting so I can start saving these motors 😅
🤣🤣 they are tons of them!!!
F20B with a 4.7 itr trans. In my ej2 10 years strong.
I have a CR-Z that I kept. Is it harder to swap it from auto to manual with an L15 swap? Or am I better off finding a manual CR-Z?
I personally love the body style of this car, and it’s becoming more rare nowadays
They will never die to me 💯
K and J series are my favorite Honda engines.
The k series will never die. They made close to 1million accords in each year from 03-08 which have the base k24, they also put the k24a2 in the TsX although the years is 07, boasting 210hp stock, it also came in the CRV, the Fit, the element, and the Crosstour with AWD in most of these cars. K series won't die for another 20years
And the B series still hasn’t died either.
