You are making hard work of that. Yes cut on the flats to get deeper. Also a smaller diameter wheel helps. I make sure to cut as deep as possible without cutting the bit you want to keep. A nick on the hexagon doesn't matter. I never cut around. When you have both sides cut, Place it flat on an anvil, or some heavy steel. Take a small cold chisel place as near to the route end as possible and hit hard. They split quite easily, then turn over and repeat. Thanks for posting.
