    I had the opposite transition i went from washing ever other day or so to HAVING to wash my hair every day. Not washing every day didn’t train it to produce less oil. It stayed oily and fed the malassezia and now I’m on medicated shampoo for it that I have to use every day just to keep the burning at bay (and even then the flakes are still there and it still itches). I’m convinced that “training” just doesn’t work for many people. I wish it was that easy

      I think I'll be sticking to every 4 days as well. Any more, and my scalp starts feeling itchy and I just feel overall kinda icky (I also workout almost every day so I imagine the build up from that doesn't help).

      @AaliyahSemone 3 года назад +3

      @@drerinwhite8511 Of course! I agree quarantine did really help with giving me time to let my hair get a lil greasy before I showered, without being in public. I was washing every morning and sometimes twice a day if I felt like it at the beginning of 2020. I started with doing it every other day, and the beginning is when it seems to take the longest to adjust. I stuck with every other day for about 3-4 months before I could finally venture into every 3 days. I did that for another couple of months, and then switched to twice a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays), so I'm alternating between every 3-4 days, I guess. It takes a lot of patience, conditioning only the second half of your hair, double shampooing if you're feeling extra yucky each shower, and being careful not to touch your hair throughout the day (I struggle with playing with my hair lol). Hope this helps!

    I've been washing my hair once a week for years and also have oily scalp and seborrheic dermatitis on my crown. I recently started using Nizoral shampoo to treat it just this year and that has worked really well for flaking and itchiness. The directions for that shampoo suggest "double cleansing" as well and that has really helped with controlling oil. I also started using a satin cap/bonnet to sleep in and that has been very helpful for keeping frizz and tangles at bay.

      My brother has that condition and he was prescribed that shampoo literally over 3 decades ago. I have been having itchy scalp lately and not sure if it’s hard water, shampoo, diet or what. I do use a shower filter, but going to change it more often to see if that helps. I used to use henna and indigo to dye my hair and it cleared all my scalp issues.

    A natural hair brush, like a boar bristle or synthetic bristle, is soooo important in my opinion. I got one finally and its soooo good, the natural bristle really helps distribute the oils from the scalp todays the ends. I was having issues of my ends looking really dry on like day 3 or 4 but scalp would be oily so I got a boar bristle brush and while my scalp will still be decently oily after it does help and my ends look and feel WAY better after. I also find that it gives me another day before I need dry shampoo.

    I used to wash my hair EVERY morning (with $1-3 walmart brand shampoo/conditioner) and by that evening it would already be noticeably oily. I hated the idea of trying to do even every other day, but finally tried it after my sister bugged me about it for ages. It was rough at first but I am now down to twice a week, even using the Biolage hydrating shampoo/condition. It grows faster, the ends are wayyy less damaged, and it even feels like it's gotten thicker. I'm glad you make videos like these to let people know they can do it too!

    • @AaliyahSemone
      @AaliyahSemone 3 года назад

      @@elyssa2546 Yes girl, so when I first started (after a lifetime of washing daily) it took probably 3-4 months before my second-day hair looked normal. However, the longer I went between washes, the faster it adjusted, so like just recently when I switched from every 3 days to every 4 days, my hair only took a couple of weeks to start looking okay on my last day before wash day. I hope this helps! The first few months are always the hardest, at least they were for me because my hair was so used to being washed so much.

  • @dark_baphomet

    I use scalp scrubbers to wash my scalp, it helps deep clean my scalp and it feels super clean when washing, I can’t go without it now. I’m up to 3-4 days, 5 max with dry shampoo, but also it depends on the season and temperature and humidity. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to go any longer than 5 days but I’m fine with that, I started out I think every 1.5 days when I was 15 and I’m 27 now, so it’s been a looooong time of keeping pushing and elongating the time between washes, and I know someone who doesn’t use dry shampoo and only washes her hair once a week or once every other week, so you’ll reach a limit for sure, but going as long as possible is really going to help keep your hair healthy, as washing every day is just stripping it of oils

    The powder at the end is the only dry shampoo I actually like! And sometimes I'll use the Dove, but by the time the day goes on my hair feels gross and sticky. The Kristin Ess powder., my hair actually feels clean. I usually just pump some into my hand and then I sort of rub it in a bit and then I flip my head over and rub it into my scalp. Then, I use a comb or brush and brush it in so its even.. I dunno.. I like it hah. Its almost impossible to use too much, which is great because of the fussy packaging

    Thank you for this! My hair, which is thin, fine, and curly, has gotten sooooooo thin in the last few months. I suspected that it was frequent washing. Some weeks every day, some weeks every other day. My current job is the reason for frequent washing and there is no way around that. But, I appreciate your observation that your hair became thinner because of washing it every day. Hopefully, down the road, I won't need to wash it so frequently. Hopefully it will get thicker once I've reduced the frequency of washing. :-)

    I have recently started my hair journey of less washing and am going strong for about a month now! I used to wash my hair EVERY DAY for about 3 years because I have always worked in the food industry and cant stand the smell of food in my hair. I started a new job in childcare and that's when i decided to stop washing every day and only did every other day. I've worked up to 3 days now and am so excited! I agree with you that it does take some time. Also, I have tried the Not Your Mothers dry shampoo and i do not recommend it, while it is cheaper, i personally think it feels way too gritty and gross than other dry shampoos i have tried. If you're starting on this journey i definitely would give treseme a try for dry shampoo.

    I wash every fifth day and my top tip would be to wear as many half-up hairstyles as you can, anything to stop you from constantly pushing hair off your face. I have to wash my hair about two days earlier if I wear my hair completely down, purely from touching it all the time! If you love your hair down then maybe just try this whilst in the early stages of training your hair and I promise you'll reach your goal faster!

      I honestly really hate this myth that it’s just a matter of training your scalp, some people have greasier hair than others (and of course it shows faster if they have thin hair), just like people have oilier facial or body skin than others. No derm would ever tell you to wash your face every other day to train it to be less oily. I don’t know why people think scalp is so different. Oil production is largely based on hormones, not something you can control, so scalp training will definitely not help the people who are oily for that reason. I’m like you, oily all over, I would wash my hair in the morning and it’d look greasy by nighttime. Couldn’t have bangs cause of how gross they got. I have tried washing less and all the strategies several times, it just makes me look extra disgusting. Only thing that changed things was going on Accutane, because it stops your body’s oil production

      Exactly. There is no point letting yourself br dirty to try and be like people on youtube. Dermatologists are breaking the myth that daily washing is bad. For some people it's totally necessary. I feel like the base of RUclips is women with thick hair. That is a totally different hair type to thin and oily hair and we should not use them as models for ourselves.

    I wonder, if someone also has an oily face, if washing less trains the skin on the face as well to produce less oil. Because I can’t imagine that there’s a lot of a difference between the skin on the scalp and the skin on the face (and I‘m talking about not using any kind of make-up of course). I mean obviously everybody uses skin care on the face versus not using that on the scalp. But I still wonder why I never even hear anyone talking about training the skin on the face to produce less oil. I would love my face to be less oily. Really enjoyed the video!!!

    Hey Abbey, I started spacing out my washes five months ago and am now going 3 days between washes. However, my hair is still very greasy by day 3 (although this depends on sweating + I have noticed certain shampoos help to prolong the grease, still doing trial and error). So, essentially, I can get two good days out of my hair. I know that my hair is very greasy by nature, but I was hoping to see more progress by month 5. Based on your experience + knowledge (especially the newer idea that 'training' isn't actually a thing), do you think I can expect to see better results by day 3 if I stay committed? Maybe even hope to get to day 4 sometime in my future? Thanks so much. I love your videos and they have helped me so much over the past 5 months. :)

      Hey! If you have very greasy hair I would recommend using a clarifying shampoo for at least your 1st hair wash. Suave Clarifying is supposed to be pretty good and it's very affordable but of course you can use whatever you like as long as it's clarifying. I do not have extremely oily hair but I do have straight hair that gets oily reasonably quickly. The only way to know for sure is to keep going! I started washing my hair every day or every other day and when I started hair training I jumped straight to 4 days. It took the full year for my hair to not get greasy for 3 days. It def took me more time than what some people describe. I hope this helps and if you have any questions I will try to help! 🥰

You had mentioned that you don't put on dry shampoo until the 4th or 5th day but how do you hold off on wanting that volume in your hair when it looks greasy, flat and gross? And all you do is brush out your hair every day until you do need to apply dry shampoo? I really want to have healthier hair as well.

    You can’t “train” your oil glands. I believe the change of your routine & products is what it’s helping you. Either way your hair is gorgeous 💕

    • @xqueenfrostine
      @xqueenfrostine 3 года назад +3

      Training is probably the wrong word, but most people can’t suddenly go from needing to wash their hair daily to needing it once a week the first time they start their new routine. If the oil glands on your scalp have been producing a lot of oil to compensate for the amount it loses through daily washing, it’s not going to stop as soon as you switch products. There’s an adjustment period as your skin figures out that it doesn’t need to produce as much oil as it used to because it’s getting washed less frequently or because you’ve switched to less stripping products.

    You can just use corn starch the night before on your scalp and it’s a more natural 🌱 option to dry shampoo. Or arrow root works too.

    • @chagoot1024
      @chagoot1024 Год назад

      I've used corn starch too, and I'm shocked at how well it works. Some say to add baking powder to it to avoid clumps in the stuff, but I don't. I just stir it with a spoon. It's fine then. Some say to add a colored spice, like cinnamon, for brown/red hair, and unsweetened cocoa powder if your hair is darker, so that the powder doesn't seem so white on your hair. I was leery of using a lot of straight cinnamon on my hair, so I use a mixed spice, like Ras El Hanoot (sp?), or Chinese 5 Spice, for the color. I really am amazed at the results. I have 2 large cans of commercial dry shampoo that I ordered before finding the cornstarch recipe (basically a half cup of cornstarch with about a tablespoon of the spice) and I haven't even used them yet, as I am quite satisfied with the cornstarch one I did myself.

    I started watching a month ago and have been training my hair ever since. I'm slowly pushing toward every 3 days now, but my hair looks so so much better and fuller already. I'm also obsessed with Pureology products now 😅 I've definitely spent more money since finding your videos, but it's been worth it lol.
    Recently I've been seeing a ton of videos on RUclips about using rice water to grow hair. It looks like it's being used as a natural protein treatment.

    I had dry flaky scalp, so I used to only wash my hair 2-3 times a week, but after a terrifying hairdressing incident my thick beautiful hair started falling out in clumps and now I have very fine, thinning hair...sad. Of course it didn't help I have colored my hair since I was in my 20;s. Now I wash my hair only once a week, use silk/satin scrunchies and head bands, sleep on silk/satin pillowcase or wear satin bonnet..thanks mostly to Dr Dray for those last two. Also it helps to not use any heat or non stripping shampoo or conditioner.

    I always felt that the reason why hair gets really oily for some is because the scalp is sooo dry and it's over producing oil to moisten it. Just like how the face oils works. Especially if you live in dry climates, like me, in Las Vegas. So I think maybe letting the hair balance itself out by helping to using hydrating shampoos. I have to use these or my scalp will be itching because of the dryness. It could also be that I'm not using cold water is why my hair is also too dry on the first day.

    I recently switched from the combined pill to the mini pill for health reasons and it has increased my testosterone levels. My skin has gone from clear and dry to oily and acne prone. My scalp has always been oily but now it’s uncontrollable. I am still sticking to washing my hair every other day but on the second day, even the ends of my hair feel oily which I didn’t think was possible. (I recently cut my hair to a bob thinking my long hair was weighing me down and making it look flatter and oilier). It made no difference. I also have black hair which isn’t helping! I tried switching from sulfate free shampoo back to sulfates thinking I needed to strip my hair and it felt good for a while but now it just looks worse. I also use a salt scrub weekly, a scalp massager and do the twice wash method with no conditioner. No difference. Any helpful tips would be appreciated❤️
