At this point, most people write madrid off saying they dont keep possession. But they've never relied on keeping possession, they just take up any chance they get. Ancelotti isnt guardiola and he showed that tonight, he doesnt keep the ball longer or make his team pass the ball more, he just wins. Players have one job, to score goals. He doesnt play fancy football, he just lets his players play the basic football added with their individual brilliance

    • @bordedup546
      @bordedup546 8 месяцев назад +31

yea but managers don't play fancy football just to stroke their egos, they do it because it generates more chances which is the best way to give your team a chance at winning. madrid can still win by being more clinical even if they generate fewer oppertunities but that should never be a manager's go to strategy

Possession doesn’t mean anything if you’re just passing sideways. Spain under Enrique had immense possession, had 1,000 pass games where they scored 1 goal or none at all. Some teams are built to play against possession based team. I saw a stat a year or two ago that Bayern Munich had less possession than opponents on 17 games and won 16 of them. Madrid planned this time not to let City have chances on the box, and they were successful. Over the two legs city only had two free shot in the box, both by KdB today. Silva’s chance in the first half might be counted too. That’s 3 genuine chances in the box over 210 minutes, what more do you want from defense?

6.5 is very harsh for Ancelotti, you seem to forget that defending is an art in itself and defending city for 120 mins and limiting them to only one goal is incredible. You could argue that Ancelottis gameplan worked more than Peps because he won in the end considering it was at the Etihad and no one can dominate City there 🤷🏾‍♂️

Real Madrid where the better team last night, they was more dangerous aswell.

And city play a really predictable football. Real plan works wonders by creating chance out of a tiny gap they found when city too busy pressing forward slowly and methodically. The only reason they manage to equalize is they gone out of their predictable methodical approach by sending in that chaotic kid that i don't remember his name. Where were all those big names? They all took low % chances especially against good gk. They don't even bother sending the ball to haaland, they play haaland like he's giroud. people need to realize that Real Madrid was never going to the Etihad Stadium to dominate possession whatsoever. Ancelotti knew he needed to score first and he did with Rodrygo; if Madrid hadn't scored first, then there would have been no way that this team would come back.
Ancelotti played around with Pep's tactics. City having like 70% possession meant nothing if everything they did with the ball was sideways or backward. For Ancelotti, he dictated City's style of play with his defensive structure and player movements. Yes, I agree that it looked disgusting to watch, but Ancelotti dictated the play for tonight's game. He was never going to play like last year when we lost 4-0 and he made the field open for City. In fact, all those goals for City came from central positions where Real Madrid's defense was dissected through the middle. This year, he blocked the middle of the park, which is where City thrives and gave them the wings.
Ancelotti was playing around with Pep without Pep even knowing. This was a typical "You take the ball and play with it, but I won't give you a chance to penetrate and expose me" situation. Even City's goal today came from a lucky rebound back to De Bruyne. Other than that, City just passes the ball amongst each other with no real threat most of time. It felt like they kept the ball for 5 minutes for each attack and nothing happened.
I don't know why people are pissed at the fact that Ancelotti didn't expand his team and make the game so open. He knew that the only way to beat City was by closing down the midfield and forcing them sideways. Then, it becomes a training ground drill of pressure and cover for the players. The agenda that City dominated was due to Ancelotti giving City the ball for the entire game, knowing well that he can control the way City attacks with his defensive structure. It was working the whole game but eventually, the ball rebounds in the path of a City player for a goal. Other than that, Ancelotti coached a defensive masterclass that City struggled all night to break down.
Let's not forget, the same thing happened in the 3-3 game where City just passed the ball sideways and rarely created chances. In the 1st leg, they only scored through goals from outside the 18-yard box. Today, the exact same thing happened but Madrid had less possession than in the 1st leg. The only difference is that City never shot from a distance. Over the 2 legs, City could only really create scoring chances by shooting from outside the 18-yard box. We need to give a lot of credit to Ancelotti because he basically nullified City's passing through the midfield lines and forced City to play a boring sideways passing game over the 2 legs.
Once again, Real Madrid controlled the game by not having the ball since their defensive shape dictated that game and Real Madrid was content since they were making City do what they wanted them to do. That is to pass the ball sideways and backward and not penetrate through the midfield.

Damn he kept us in that match for most of the first half, Akanji and KDB both looked dangerous but Kroos did his best, one thing I thought I saw (I'm not sure cause I saw it only once) is that Cama came into that pocket to cover Akanji's run meaning that Bernardo was free for some time but he will be closely tracked by either Fede or Cama himself. Papa Carlo laid it all out plainly: the opening match saw both teams scoring unlikely goals, resulting in a defensive-free clash, especially surprising on Spanish soil. Fortunately, it ended in a 3:3 draw. Similar to last year, Real was penalized for their open style of play.
In contrast, yesterday’s game was a cautious affair from the start. Why risk an aggressive strategy only to potentially concede 2-3 goals to City by the 30th minute? Such a scenario would have been perfect for Pep, but he was denied that pleasure. A defensive approach was planned from the outset, and a quick goal scored early validated this strategy.
With a quiet but solid defense, leading the score, and the occasional counterattack. Walker dominated Viney, showcasing why he might be the best full-back currently, that's why counter attacks were not seen from RM. Meanwhile, Rodrigo capitalized on a key opportunity.
Real maintained a low profile, while City, despite their sophistication, managed only one goal following Rudy's error. All their intricate passing and numerous corners yielded no significant results.
The questions are straightforward: either defeat Real Madrid and move to the semi-finals, or fail to do so and see Real advance. Lunin also deserves praise for his exceptional performance yesterday.
The game unfolded clearly, fairly, and naturally.
City pushed the pace to the max, but Real kept up.

contradict to everyone's though of Ancelotti just relax and let Madrid players cope on their own, I think that this man really went serious. Pep's City is really a beast that he cannot let the team stand the ground or just give ground and endure, he needs a plan to cut the beast's heart. Man City actually has a drawback, I won't say it as a weakness since it only is inferior to other features, they are not very good dealing with teams who has players that can handle aerial duels with comfort. To do that, that player must be smart to know how to cleverly shield the ball from the coming defender and pivot, and we are talking about Walker, Dias, Rodri, that player must be something, and he must be very strong and big to hold the defenders off before knocking tha ball for the coming runner for a quick counter.
Rewind a bit and we can remember Inter Milan did that move very well, the same went to Tottenham when they had Kane, Brentford when they have Ivan Toney, and somewhat Newcastle United at the first matchdays of 22/23. Bellingham's ridiculous move was the pivotal moment to Rodrygo's goal. He held the long ball with both skill and his strong stature , letting the ball fall off his body a bit so that he can have some space passing it to Valverde, and that's history bros.

Love Pep, but his stubbornness, hubris and inability to adapt his absurd high line - that’s been an issue all season - is what allowed RM to win. 3:4 goals RM scored were on the counter down the right side where City had been having issue all season. Remember, last season Pep adapted and played a conservative flat back 4 away at RM and then a more attacking posture with a back 3 at home when City won 4-0. This season, he played a back 2 in both games which was suicidal, especially against the best counter attacking team in the world. I really wonder if he will learn from it (doubtful since even a blind person could see the issues which had been a consistent problem all season in the PL, and yet he did it anyway).

At the beginning Real Madrid counter attack well, but later Man City slaughter their counter attack. What the manager needs to do is to create more chances and more expected goals, cause football is a game of possibility. And in these two matches, Man City is the one who have more expected goals. So I believe Pep deserved one point higher than Ancelotti.
