That's not the same thing at all. This song is about serial monogamy with a lot of partners that didn't work out. It's introspective about how, despite good intentions, there's some kind of pattern that doesn't lead to lasting relationships. You're describing someone who is being deceitful and manipulative and doesn't respect their partner's feelings. Completely different.
Protect them from what? Having several relationships if you realize you are not a match? I don`t know why she is calling herself a slut here, she just had several relationships that despite good intentions didn`t work out.
