    Hey Matt, love the show! One thing I do for work when I have to access a technical website w/ lots of info (such as your VIN lookup website) is print the page to a PDF file and stick it in the job folder. That way I don't have to access the website ever again if there's something I forgot to get. The Opera browser has a 'save to PDF' option which will save the file to one continuous page w/ everything on it unlike the page breaks that sometimes mess things up on a PDF file printer. Just thought I would throw that out there in the off chance you didn't know about it.

    The leak around the IAC makes a lot of sense. That's why it was having trouble idling, but still ran fine with you drove it.

    • @SchrodingersBox
      @SchrodingersBox  2 года назад +1

      yes that would make sense for sure except the leak and the IAC showed to be so minimal it would have impact on drivability. i was certain at first it was a vacuum leak, but smoke test showed it wasn’t.

    Let me go ahead and tell you that the IAC valve has a vent port that will look like a vaccum leak. Well it is a leak but it’s a known metered leaked. So if it is coming out the “button” looking cap on the IAC, it’s fine. I’m waiting to see the diagnosis. Wild guess to throw in the pool, but I’m going to go with recessed valve seats on exhaust valves. It’s a common occurrence/not commonly known issue on these older SOHC cast iron engines. Because this engine uses hydraulic lash adjusters, I can see this contributing to bad idle when engine is cold. Still big guess based on the little info we have at the moment.

    I didn't realize there was so many videos on RUclips about auto repair. It's such an easy field, especially now with all the data you have access too. Plug in your little device and it gives you the issue, sort of. I just didn't realize there was so much interest in Auto Repair?! I do believe it was a very difficult field back in the day, though. You had to really understand and control the machine. Now, you just learn the system, values with your own process and it's actually very very easy.

    • @SchrodingersBox
      @SchrodingersBox  Год назад +2

      Well unfortunately if you ever actually get on of these little devices you will very very quickly find it actually is nothing even close to how you described it. here is an example: you have a cranking no start. your little device shows a cranking engine RPM of 250. you see a cam crank signal correlation of 1.0. fuel injector pulsewidth is 50ms and map indicates a voltage of 1.5 with MAF of around .20lb/s.
      what’s wrong with the car that it won’t start?

    • @jeremycurtisisgay
      @jeremycurtisisgay Год назад

      @@SchrodingersBox I mean, of course you have interesting times but by and large it gets very easy. Obviously, I was being being snarky with the scan tool remark, but I stand by my statement of it being easier now. Even though you are a DIY guy and only take in select issues, you know im telling the truth. Maybe once a week something is a little challenging. The mechanical part is more difficult than the electrical/electronic part for someone who knows the system.
      Your car has a crank no start issue. Have it towed in and I'll take a look at it and have you back on the road.

      you never answered the question. what is your next step given the data I provided in the example. I mean this is easy right? it’s a modern CAN vehicle and I provided the basic scan tool data. so what’s your next move? You said “This is easy” so where is your answer?

      @@SchrodingersBox Dang, I don't know why you are being so defensive about my comment and opinion. I still Stand by my comment 95% of issues are easier today with the data than before.. yes, it can be difficult and challenging at times but most of the time it's straight forward.
      In your hypothetical car scenario, I'm not sure man. So many factors to this. Im not sure what I'd do. I guess, first thing I'd do is take the information you gave me and put in back of my head. I'd then confirm the complaint. I would then do all the easy, fast stuff that I pretty much always do. Usually it's sorta narrowed down as far as direction on those situations without really digging into any data. If that doesn't work,I would probably just then from easiest to hardest manually check everything I possibly could that would cause a crank no start. Probably start throwing parts at it, starting with recommended 100k mile O2 sensor. replacement. If that didn't work, I'd recommend the owner take it to someone who knew how to interpret this "Dang ole Computer stuff".

    An Actron CP9690 has code-connect to diagnose codes. Special tests checks misfires. Normal is 0. Erase the codes and recheck. Check fuel trim. See if the exhaust is stopped up. On record test, with the koeo and engine cold, look at the cts reading. See if it's accurate according to outside temperature. If it thinks it's much warmer than the outside temperature, that can cause a lean mixture. If it reads too low, that can cause a rich mixture. One guy posted a video of his truck hard starting. He replaced everything. I suggested the cts. That was it! South Maine Auto uses it to check emissions readiness on test drives. A Launch x431 checks history report. A Launch Creader elite can be used on the road.

I got tired of using my homemade smoke machine consisting of a large popcorn tin (you know those ones you get on Christmas) with air fittings attached and a smaller tin inside w/ a baby oil soaked rag and a lit charcoal briquette. I was likewise impressed with the quality and everything you get w/ the package. Now if they would make one w/ a flow meter that would be especially awesome. I was thinking about ordering a medical flow meter on Amazon for $20 and plumbing it in - IF I ever need one.
