Counterpoint...that freaked me out! WHAT is going on here? That's some classic Savage Geese video production for sure. I'm only sort of getting used to the "maniac breaks" amongst of a sea of calm, reasoned reviews.
@@ragweedmakesmesneeze Oh, he's always sneaking crazy stuff into their videos, just much more subtle than say Regular Car Reviews. This time it was just a bit more in your face... You see it when he is scrolling through a file listing on a radio, etc...
The amount of quality and time that goes into every video is amazing. This channel is TRULY a channel for us PEOPLE. No bullshit ads and marketing. And then you have the neutral yet direct opinions that actually matter to us enthusiasts. Hands down my favorite channel in all of RUclips.
idk man, the grab keys, open garage holding multiple exotics, ramble about nothing, cold exhaust start, plug merch, more rambling, molest a car with add-on parts for no reason in a million dollar garage/warehouse, plug merch again, sponsor segment, random pull on public road, even more rambling, plug merch, lifestyle, & sister channels, end with another sponsor segment... I have a weird relationship with my GR86. I continually think about trading it in for something more powerful and comfortable (Supra, M2, SS, etc.). Then I go test drive these cars, come back to my car, and feel like I'm in something that's a breath of fresh air compared to those bloated automobiles. There is no replacement for simplicity and lightness.
I actually own an M2 right now and I'm considering trading it in for a GR or BRZ! I owned a first gen twin and I feel that the twins may offer more fun than the M2. Power is great, but engagement and fun seem like the better fit for me.
@Melrick Ibanez I do wonder what a happy medium between the M2 and the twins would be. I kind of want to try a base cayman next, as it has some of the lightweight characteristics with more power and better interior. Though it's really hard to justify that price for a 4 cylinder. I've also thought about the new Z. More powerful, kind of old school feeling, but of course with substantially more weight.
@@milesfathi as someone that has driven both a Supra & a Z I’d just go straight for the Supra especially if you don’t plan to throw a ton of money at the car. The Supra stock suspension is infinitely better than the Z’s & what hasn’t been said about the B58, it sounds good, it’s very reliable & super strong. Couple that with the bizarre issues the VR30s have had & the bloated weight of the Z, it’s an easy choice to me especially if you’re coming from a lightweight car like a Miata or BRZ/86. Another issue I have with the Z that wasn’t really mentioned by Jack or Mark in their review is the interior quality is downright comically bad. I feel bad for folks paying at or near $50k+ for switches & buttons that feel like they’re out of a 2003 Chevy Tahoe.
I thought the same about my S2000. I never sold because I realized I'd miss it. Test drove Caymans, various generations of M3s . All more powerful cars but all heavier and less responsive and ultimately less exciting. I think it comes down to if somebody needs to daily their sports car and how much comfort they want/need
If you are into simplicity and lightness, try a real sports car like an MX-5, which is a foot shorter and 500 lb. lighter than the GR86. Plus, an oil cooler is a stock component of the MX-5’s bulletproof engine. The Geese are obviously disturbed by the number of GR86 engines grenading due to a design flaw the manufacturer will not admit to. For me that would be a deal breaker, and as word gets around it’s going to hurt their resale value.
The first thing I did to my 2022 GR86 was put in combo street and track brake pads (Endless MX72Plus). Secondly, I installed a Tomei oil pan baffle and an oil pressure gauge. I've had no trouble on the street or track. It's not so much fun as my Miata, but I couldn't fit my walker (I'm 90) in the Miata.
In 2014 I bought an 86 as my only car/daily driver, and I've done nearly 50 track days in it over the years. With a few key mods it's been such a fun, reliable and rewarding car to own and race. Given where the car world is going with prices, availability and regulations, I'll likely keep this car for a very long time.
@@isaaccrews7521 Nothing major to report. I change engine oil every 3-4 track days regardless of age and gearbox/diff oil annually. Before doing track days I fitted a thermostatic oil cooler, oil pan baffle and ran 0 or 5W-30 engine oil. As all my local tracks run clockwise the outside front wheel bearing took a beating and needed replacing. All other wheel bearings are still OK. Driving in heavy traffic daily and doing track days wore the clutch and throwout bearing out, so these both got replaced about 2.5 years ago. Otherwise I just did coilovers, wheels/tires and an AP racing brake kit on the front.
@@vapor4den See my reply to Issac but in summary I've had no major issues. I think the key with FA20 reliability is to keep the engine oil from getting too hot and thinning out. If it's still NA / not boosted, an oil cooler and a thicker grade oil should prevent any major issues, at least it did for me. An oil pan baffle is also a good idea and extra insurance. Gearbox itself is fine, no issues with the synchros and shifting. Clutch/throwout bearing gave up a few years ago but that was it.
Love the grounded realism Mark brings to the car scene with how expensive being a car enthusiast is. Watching RUclips videos and reading all the hype here and hype there, it’s easy to get into the mindset of “I can’t enjoy cars unless I have [x, y, & z] or do such and such to my car.”
I bought my GR86 to drive to and from work. Did I spend too much money for just a daily commuter? Yes. Am I enjoying the drive every time I get on the road now? Hell fuckin yeah.
@0 No, I would have kept it. It was the best car I've ever owned. If you are thinking of maybe getting this car, I urge you to test drive it first. And I think for the 2024 model it also comes with upgraded Brembo brakes, not too sure about this. That's something I missed out on since I had the launch 2022 version.
@@Krenisphia Thanks for the tip, I’m actually saving money now, so I will be able to buy this car next year so I will take the newest version. Anyone I saw so far are more than happy with this car. (I might actually go for that test drive). Thanks for the tip
And like the Nissan Z cars, the hiccups are things anyone who tracks it will upgrade anyway, including running an actual high quality synthetic race oil when taking it to the track and not some boulevard parts store synthetic swill.
I picked up the exact same GR86 in February of '22 after owning a '13 BRZ in my mid-20's. Now that I'm creeping towards 40 with a toddler in tow, I've found that as much joy as I get driving it, it's a vastly different experience and I'm trading it in 2 days from now for a G70. It's kind of sad, I feel as if I'm betraying that younger version of myself with his "Non-automatica" #savethemanuals t-shirt and DNGRZNE license plates. Though I can't say I'll miss the noise on the highway and feeling every single bump travel up my spine as I cruise along Canada's cratered highways. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to own both generations of this car and appreciate how there's still a few automotive execs out there who push these increasingly rare kinds of cars out to the market.
As someone of a similar age who traded a Camaro for a Mazda CX-30 Turbo 2 years ago, I don't think you'll regret it. The G70 is a great car to drive and you don't have to give up on comfort and practicality that you do with the 86. I may buy a sports car in the future, but I don't think I'm dailying one again.
You should sell your ‘22 GR86 privately and get $5k more than trading it in to the dealer. With such a lack of supply, it should be a very easy thing to do.
You don't have to give up your fun car... the 2 door thing is definitely going to be difficult, but I have two kids (3.5 and 1.5 years old) and they do fine in the back seat of my 2006 STI. I know, of course, the STI feels like a truck after being in the BRZ (I used to own 2013 BRZ too) but its still better than getting into larger sedans or SUVs if you don't want these vehicles.
We picked up our '23 BRZ 3 months after our kid was born. With an STI hatch and an Xterra out on hte driveway, the BRZ is still getting 75% of runtime. All grosseries (except CostCo), doctor appointments, swimming lessons, and park outings, are all done in the BRZ. While I would never suggest someone to buy a BRZ as their only family vehicle, there's absolutely no reason to get rid of it because of the kid! P.S. There are manual G70s out there, be it a couple of years old.
I bought a 2023 BRZ at the end of last year. I'm in my 30s but it's the first new car I've ever purchased. It still, half a year later, never ceases to put a smile on my face. The car is just so joyous to drive and even though it's on the cheap side, it feels special every time I climb into it. In a world of increasing technology, ever-expanding CUVs, my stupid little manual 2+2 feels like a clown wig or something. So much whimsy. Really appreciated this series (though my bank account hates y'all for suggesting these mods).
@@Platos-Den It was! And I fortunately found a dealer who let me test drive one. I opted for the brz/86 because of the increased practicality, especially because I didn't want a soft-top (the RF basically doesn't have a trunk).
@@mofayer To be honest I'm actually not sure off the top of my head. I don't really spend much time at highway speed because I don't commute. I think it's probably _around_ 3.5-4k?
Mark, you are one of the few people I know that I could talk to without a creeping discomfort under the surface, because I know you have the courage to speak openly, from the heart, that you don't shy away from the deep and meaningful stuff. In other words: *Those who talk at length about external things but reveal very little about their own inner state are to be mistrusted, for they fail at the ultimate test of courage.* Courage serves love by defying the rule of fear, and fear being the root of all suffering, those who are sincerely worried about the crisis state of the world would naturally do their best in that area. Another thought on that: *When the world gets crazier, the sages get calmer.*
I purchased my '23 BRZ last year August and I plan on keeping it as long as possible. I've had so much fun and have cherished my experience with it, I'm appreciating this car more and more after each drive. The GR86/BRZ/FRS/GT86 will all be timeless classics in their own right.
@@SilverScarletSpider The RTV issue is overblown and a product of the internet being the internet. There have only been a handful of cases of an engine blowing with the RTV being the cause. If I do see any problems, warranty will fix it and I'm confident in Subaru Canada that they will follow through with it. If anything, I'll drop the pan right before or shortly after my warranty ends to just do a cleanup.
Love this channel, you guys talk about a lot of intangibles that are important and honestly help others make smarter purchasing decisions. The engineering segments you bring in are very unique and appreciated as well.
Thanks for making the long term videos on the tuning and reliability on this car, you guys are consistantly putting out the most in depth videos on one of the last "affordable" sports cars before Evs kill them off (I cringe every time I see used ones going for over msrp). Seriously considering one as a stepping stone to a Cayman GTS, and am still dreaming of a GT3, thanks for the hard work guys
After owning 2 FK8’s , I went back to my Honda dealer to order an FL5. Unfortunately for Honda , I had to pass through the adjoining Toyota dealership to get there, saw a GR86 sitting there and arranged a quick test drive just for the hell of it. After returning I went back to Honda and subsequently cancelled my order. I’m absolutely loving it and with zero regrets. Oh and I saved myself $30,000 in the process 👍. Thanks for all your hard working on all the videos, it’s greatly appreciated
Good move. I'll never understand why anybody would want to pay a lot of money for a fwd civic over a rwd car that's not a complete bore. And the gr86 is definately not a bore. Honda seem to have lost the plot. They should have built an s2000 follow up but no. We get overpriced Civics and Integras instead
@@TheChannel1978 I hate fwd as much as anyone else but it's hardly a bore. It's only 300lbs heavier than the GR86 with 100whp more, stock. It's very fast and has amazing handling and has one of the best feeling 6 speeds available. It's worth MSRP but not what the dealers are overcharging it for.
More Civic Type R content! One day Honda might figure out how to build more than two per month for the entire country, and when they're no longer unobtanium it will be great to hear your long-term impressions.
@@psewgobind I doubt it, unfortunately. I will hope for the best, but even if the Type S solves it, what luck for those of us who prefer the Type R? The Civic is already a very big ask at 45K USD, and the Type S, to me, is not worth another 6-7K not counting markups. I'm considering a used IS 350 F if I can get one for high 30s, but that would be after I pay off my 22 Civic and if I decide to trade it.
@@Magnosummit I’m surprised they want that much for Type-S even if it’s the best car in their stable. For that price you could get 2 EN which is on par in ability and feature.
@@psewgobind cars are just getting really expensive. These new versions of older sports cars are priced out of the range of some of the people who liked them 20-25 years ago.
Cars, especially brand-new sports cars are now inappropriately expensive for the average working person, for the most part. Thank you for covering that. I only get excited about the lower-priced end of cars now, because they're real, everyday people can have them, and they usually won't financially ruin your life. I bought my 2019 Miata, base Sport, at invoice for $26,000 over four years and 40,000 miles ago. Car is unmodified, just replaced tires for the second time, and only major maintenance has been transmission oil change so far. The cost per mile, the smiles per dollar of this car have been phenomenal. I do not hesitate to recommend these machines to people. It's the blue collar hero. The latest GR86 is a great car, but I like convertibles, and I don't like the driving experience of naturally aspirated boxer-four engines. You don't have to spend $40,000 to have fun in a sports car, even a new sports car. You don't have to spend $3,000 a year on consumables, or take on a massive insurance bill. You don't have to spend $5,000 or $10,000 on performance modifications. There are very few pure cheap RWD cars left on the new car market. Consider supporting them with cold, hard purchases, voting with those dollars.
I had a 2013 FRS for 6 years and last november I upgraded to a 2023 BRZ. I couldn't be happier with the car overall. The ordering process through subaru was painless and even got a $500 discount.
Car looks good. Boxer engines are irrelevant and always always eventually break. Good to know now that dealer will leave you out to dry so going to steer clear from this pile.
I’m working on getting one of these down the road and my plan is this: Nothing. No mods. I might do the brake pad and fluid upgrade just to eliminate fade and avoid boiling the fluid if I’m driving spirited. But that’s it.
@@mrtrump632 He's recommending a baffled oil pan in place of the stock unit. These Subaru engines can suffer from oil starvation on the track due to the stock oil pan.
Well I've had my base model GR 86 for about one month now, manual is very good. My previous car, Mini Cooper S, coupe was getting a little ruff on the suspension after 9 years, 2014. In comparison the Toyota is a luxury ride and quite a bit faster, still breaking in engine, with the factory options of exhaust and subwoofer, it's a winner for my daily driver in south Chicagoland. Thanks for your videos and great content. Keep up the great videos and look for the same color, base model as I pass you up on my limited adventures.
I'll stick with my ND Miata... Been bullet proof, super fuel efficient (30+MPG) when I flog it, bought it cheap, cheap to maintain, and just super fun to drive in the mountains. I'm sure the new twins are incredibly fun and more capable than the ND but I'm happy with what I have.
The ND2 is a great car…not sure there is anything out there that gives you the same. Cheap entry level, but the brembo/recaro/bbs packaged version is around $43,000 CAD … yikes.
Great video!, I'm getting this car this year, need to keep the manuals alive, and keep the 86 legacy history alive as well. ithis car is perfect for canyon driving and being able drift it around corners.
Thank you for providing an unbiased pros and cons review of this car. I really hate those car youtubers saying "It has engine reliability issues and bad fuel mileage but hey its a fun car thats why we recommend you to buy it."
I’ve owned my GR86 Premium manual Track Red for 16 months now. It’s a blend of two cars I’ve owned before - a Porsche 944 and Audi TT 4 cylinder turbo. Handling is awesome, looks are great, and by the way the stereo is great and I’m an audiophile. I appreciate education on the RTV issue. I’m looking to increase HP by 20-30. I have no issues with wear and tear however, I live in Vancouver Island with little snow or sub zero temps. I also store it during winter. This car is a keeper and I plan to modify it. Great video and yes i subscribed. Thanks.
So true. Good callout on the Civic and Integra too. Type-Rs used to be sports cars that can be afforded by a wide demographic. It sucks the way cars have been going unless you are rich. That's the summary.
I really appreciate these long term reviews of the GR 86 because this is my dream car and I love seeing the reliability issues that I will have to deal with when I own this 🧐❤️ I also love when we get philosophical segments in videos because there are some parts of owning cars that are about life and not all about the cars themselves :),
And that is the fine print ladies and gentlemen. Hearing this feedback coming from Mark and Jack with the amount of hardware they review, really speaks volumes of this car!
I have tux mats on one of my cars. They were a bit expensive, but well worth the price in my opinion. Easy to clean, better coverage and they look super fancy which is nice. I get compliments about them. I opened mine exactly the same way Mark did except there were moaning sounds. Only thing I don’t like about them is the drive side mat tends to shift forward into the foot well, even with a bunch of clips install. Some kind of Velcro system might work better: A Velcro patch that pins into the factory carpet and the corresponding Velcro pads are either pre-installed on the mats or you manually place them in.
I love our raven black GR86 - oil changes are easy. I did the first at 2k and will repeat every 5k under normal street usage. If you track a car, do an oil change immediately. I think this is part of the problem - oil gets destroyed at the track. I'll also spend a few hundred every 15k or so and check for RTV - no biggie.
Hey guys, thing i hat about your channel is that it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. One of the highest quality car channel around YT. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the great wrap-up video! I love my '22 GR86. I bought it last spring after seeing your reviews. Definitely it was a good decision and I appreciate the early insights.
Great entry level sp ok arts car. Hands down. I get over 30 mpg easy (really 34.7). It has done extremely well.. No rtv, all quality has been fine... no issues. I honestly do not track my 86. It is my daily. Over 20+k miles in 1st year. Do tons of back road and mtn driving and it does fine. I have a Jaguar FType and C8 as well at this time, the 86 I drive more than any other car.
Great video, guys. I was disappointed when I watched one of your previous GR86 update videos where you refused to have the car's oil pickup checked but at least now you have addressed the issue and admitted that you did find some RTV in your pickup. Sure it may not have resulted in any noticeable issues for the car but just being honest about the topic restored my respect for your channel and content. Thank you.
Bought one... have had a lot of other metal including several 911s, which I tracked and raced. BRZ is very impressive at this price point. No brainer for someone wanting to learn to really drive.
I sadly wrecked my 15 FRS in 2019 when I bought it new, but that car gave me memories with meets, people, events, and much more. Unfortunately, now the market for them is not sensible to buy, but I will when the prices go down so I can buy another FRS and put back on the parts and cosmetics, and go back out there.
Great car, I considered buying it, but they're quite hard to get here in Germany. That said, I bought a ND Miata last year and couldn't be happier. Perfect 2nd car next to my 2015 Mk7 Golf GTI.
I have owned around 15 Subarus in my lifetime. Almost every mechanic I have talked to says the issue with these engines is the basic design. Porsche figured out the horizontally opposed engine to make it reliable (with a lot more money), Subaru hasn't. The oil consumption, and head gasket issues will continue until Subaru fixes it.
This was a fun car, took mine to the track and gave me the itch to modify it which I never thought I would be that person. Practicality isn’t amazing, and I think the experience is a little muted and a convertible option would be amazing as it always made me want a little more. I switched to the WRX which I enjoy, but after all the time in the GR86 with ~10k miles I really enjoyed the time and attachment I have to these vehicles.
I got the wrx and really regret it since this thing looks like so much fun and I don't really need space. But you couldn't get this thing or the BRZ as easily as the wrx, at least when I was looking.
@@66777jason Eh, keep the WRX. Way more potential with the engine with tuning. You can do minor suspension mods and really make it equally as fun on the road as far as handling goes.. and it's already faster, stock for stock. I'd personally like a GR86 but I'd want to LS swap it.
@@hhaste I don't think the new WRX is actually that much faster than the GR. The 86 is far quicker than just it's numbers suggest and I'm not entirely sure why.
Just got my GR86 a few weeks ago. Still less than 500 miles on the ODO. I missed a manual car and so far I'm very happy with it. I'm still learning the quirks about it. The silicon issue I'm aware of and plan on dropping the pan at some point to pull any I find out of the bottom. I plan on keeping it stock for a while maybe until I'm ready to turn it into my non-daily toy. I owned an ND Mazda Miata PRHT and the difference in handling between it and the GR86 is very obvious. The Miata being bouncy and with lots of body roll stock and the GR86 being ready to track out of the box. Maybe one day I'll do a V8 swap. Until then its my daily and it brings me joy to row through the gears again after a 4 year hiatus with my Mazda 3. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Best in a very different way, though. Top Gear capitalized on phony spectacle, which when done well can be very entertaining, but it's not automotive journalism.
Nice video. You're not wrong about costs...as I've gotten older, I've come to grips with the "Just buy a fox body" mantra. They're not terrible track vehicles...cheap, easy to work on, parts plentiful, etc etc. My God, the fact I'm even saying that... makes me nauseous.
The more of your videos I watch the more grateful I am to not live in an environment where we get snow or salt. These cars love temperate summers and warm winters!
Been watching savagegeese for a minute now… and lately this video popped into my head as my partner and I evaluate whether to keep her 2018 Civic Type R (over 70k miles now) purely due to their resale value… we could sell it for close to what a new GR86 base is going for… and we already have another 2020 Type R in the garage. It’s almost turning into a no brainer to make the switch.
I should add I replaced the block with a Crawford built block with forged rods. The next owner did beat the crap out of it and to my knowledge it’s still going strong. On the other hand I will never own a Subaru ever again
First Savagegeese I saw was the FRS review and I was like “who’s this cynical jackass, this car is amazing”. I got a lot older and came across his videos again and was like “wow, I agree with this guy a lot”. Ended up binge watching every video.
Bought a 2013 BRZ new and loved it. Foolishly traded it for a 370Z that I did not love as much. Bought a 2016 BRZ in Hyper Blue and never should have parted with it. Older and wiser, and a few cars later, Im returning to a 2024 BRZ and I’m keeping this one.
as a midwestern toyota tech I've only seen one 86 with ~60-70% surface area blockage from small pieces and it was an early vin, still found some rtv in later models but not nearly as bad as the (initial batch)
mine gets about 27mpg. 30 if im just on the highway. i dont do track days so that could be the difference. also i have an automatic so yeah xD. if you dont have it in sport mode its like driving a normal car. also the paddle shifters are slow to change gear. like a whole second but you get use to the delay. Anyways thank you so much for these videos its helped me learn a lot about my car and the surprising potential issues that it could have.
Definitely don't need to go Ohlins and most people won't even know how to use em right or get the full extent of it's performance - thankfully 86 owners got a lot of choices for great options. After hearing about the rtv issue, I was glad to see folks talk about it and raise serious questions. Overall loved the reviews you guys did on this platform.
idk, better go ohlins than some crap coilovers like BC racing or something though. But you're right since something like silvers neomax are much cheaper and they're very good for racing, but then they introduce NVH into the cabin. Ohlins are expensive because they provide good comfort and compliance on the street with minimal NVH, while still being excellent on track, you're paying for that versatility basically. If you only care about speed / track then you can get cheaper ones that perform the same (maybe even better) on track. Likewise the same goes for street setups. Neither would have the same level of versatility that Ohlins have though.
Once you get older, most people dont have time to deal with these kinds of problem. Personnaly, I had my share of ups and downs with my 2015 WRX. I still own it and drive it, but it's gona be the last car of it's kind for me. With the rising cost of potential upgrades to the WRX (TLX TypeS, S4 etc.), I'm not even sure I want to invest in this hobby. I don't know, I would rather have a pool in my backyard to play with my kids at this point lol.
I got a set of tuxmats for my Outback and I will never buy worthless OEM floor mats again. They suck compared to the total coverage and superior quality of tuxmats. They are the best floor mats you can buy and I will have them in every vehicle I own going forward.
I've read through all the comments here. Some people wrote great comments but most were crap. The mpg! The rtv! At least I didn't see any "It needs a turbo" comments, very surprising!

Years of tinkering, dreaming, installing, swearing and breathing in unburnt hydrocarbons from leaky homemade headers and other suboptimal homemade junk keeping it functional. Light weight with Nitrous oxide injection and a catalog of parts from Koni shocks to MSD. Now as Dad, professional, and old 👴, I am finally getting the chance to have that fun balanced car that just works and doesn’t break the bank! Thank you Subaru and Toyota, and thank you Savage Geese! My GR86 arrives this week and I am ready to enjoy the car for what it is! You guys have put it perspective very well in the scope of sports cars. I will save the Porsche or Corvette for the next one.
I am consistently surprise the fuel economy my BMW I6 delivers. In my 3 series it’s and honest to got 30-34 highway running speed limit +10. It gets better than my 2.5 Camry and has double the HP. It’s amazing.
@@slscamg I think part of the poor MPG of the 86 is just boxer engines in general. My parents have owned 3 Subarus (2xWRX, one Outback) and all of them have been pretty underwhelming efficiency wise.
Undoubtedly the Supra has taller gearing. I don't know about the 2g 86, but the 1g would spin at 4K rpm at only like 85mph. Not sure why Subaru thinks people need such a short top gear.
The mileage he gives is incorrect or based off of going 80+mph in Michigan on the interstate. I get 26mpg at 75mph on highway and that’s with having some fun.
It’s our generations version of the 1970 Datsun 240z. Pure car. I got mine bare. No heated seats, no special seats, no adaptive headlights, no trunk spoiler. No 18 wheels. Just a basic car. Never been so connected to a car.

I’m so glad my 20 year old son bought one of these, a 2022 premium, he’s young and wants to get into a more powerful car and it not only taught him how to drive a manual but how a sporty rear drive car feels, and it’s a fantastic little car, super fun to drive, you can pretty much bury your foot in it at any time and never really get in trouble, awesome learning car and just a good little car period, chassis is fantastic in my opinion, highly recommend it, especially for youngsters wanting a rear drive manual to learn to fling around.

I **really** want one of these - however, Toyota USA's seemingly blanket denial of warranty claims when folks pop motors (several friends) is basically a no-go.
Stopped by my closest Toyota dealer and was out the door in 2 minutes. None to look at, and the salesperson seemed like it didn't matter to him that I wanted one. And was amazed that I wanted a Manual trans. His words..."We put your name on a list, when a car comes in and it's your turn we call you." I hate this era in car buying.
I was lucky to work with a salesman that actually was good. He called me the second 10th anniversary trim became available I told him I would only buy manual. So long story short I got the car. Did wait 5 months because the rims were in back order I was second in line but became first after someone dropped out. These are worth waiting for. If I were you I’d put my name down for 2024 model special edition Hopefully they will have one. If the engine had another 80 horses this would rival a Porsche it’s that good.
Finally have money to spend in life, and been through all the 90's-2000's turbo cars. Figured maybe ill buy something new. GR86, Nissan Z, BMW Supra, Mustang GT. But the GR86 seems the most pure and rewarding driving experience. Buy the GR86, mod the brakes, suspension, wheels and tires, and I'd be sitting below or at the cost of a Nissan Z, tempting. When the engine goes out in 10-15 years, build a high lift engine and make it a track monster.
Really enjoy this video. Very practical and a lot of times channels focus too much on only entertainment and forget that true car enthusiasts enjoy the details.
in terms of views change, so true... i got a s2000 10 years ago and went from just a street car to full blown race car and because life changes and costs i sold that and got a brand new brz 5-6 months ago with the intent of a street car to go get groceries or a fun drive + the track days and time attack. also side note, do you want to sell the ohlins?!?
The biggest flaw in the GR86 is the Subaru powertrain. Most of that can be fixed with a K swap though...so I guess factor that into the cost of the car.
@@bearclaw5115 You overestimate on both those points. A K24 is just a better platform than the Subaru motor no matter how you cut it....even without discussing forced induction.

Well said and I agree.
Mark is great and Jack is the icing on the cake 🎂
i like to think this channel is also good for the CARS too
I have a weird relationship with my GR86.
How has the maintenance been? Has the car given you any problems?
that’s love.
I agree with Issac, any feedback about the engine/trans ?
I want to see Jack + GR86 vs Mark + S2000 in an on-track head-to-head battle.
And then driver swap, of course.
I second this.

Welcome to Canuckistan where the roads are poor and you are poor too!
Was the miata on your list?

Mark, you are one of the few people I know that I could talk to without a creeping discomfort under the surface, because I know you have the courage to speak openly, from the heart, that you don't shy away from the deep and meaningful stuff.
In other words: *Those who talk at length about external things but reveal very little about their own inner state are to be mistrusted, for they fail at the ultimate test of courage.*
Courage serves love by defying the rule of fear, and fear being the root of all suffering, those who are sincerely worried about the crisis state of the world would naturally do their best in that area.

I bought my 2019 Miata, base Sport, at invoice for $26,000 over four years and 40,000 miles ago.
I love our raven black GR86 - oil changes are easy. I did the first at 2k and will repeat every 5k under normal street usage. If you track a car, do an oil change immediately. Thank you.
Part of it was wanting to check Jacks own car and not jumping on bandwagon right away. We also wanted to talk to Toyota and Subaru as courtesy.

Great car, I considered buying it, but they're quite hard to get here in Germany. That said, I bought a ND Miata last year and couldn't be happier. Perfect 2nd car next to my 2015 Mk7 Golf GTI.
If you still considering, I just ordered one today in Germany, they're back for ordering but only at GR centers and very limited amount
I have owned around 15 Subarus in my lifetime. Almost every mechanic I have talked to says the issue with these engines is
the basic design.

Quick, pick one! I have a blue one.
The 86 is a vibe and you will be disappointed if buy it for any other reason than the 90's JDM experience. I love my 2020 Hakone.
I’ve still got my STI block sitting in my garage. Oil starvation has to be one of the first things you tackle of you plan on tracking a Subaru engine.
Put Tuxmats in my Supra. Absolutely love them.
as a midwestern toyota tech I've only seen one 86 with ~60-70% surface area blockage from small pieces and it was an early vin, still found some rtv in later models but not nearly as bad as the (initial batch)
Can you speak about the 2023 ones? Do they still come with this problem?
mine gets about 27mpg.
Great video, and a great callback to the 86 videos that started it all. Thanks for the great content over the years.
I def pulled my manual parking brake lever to this masterpiece. Thank you
Once you get older, most people dont have time to deal with these kinds of problem.
Wow, getting old sucks.
🤬🐒 I have watched all of SG FRS/86 videos: what a journey! I inherited my brother’s 5.7L Engine swap into a Triumph TR7 as my first car in 1988.
Got a 2014 BRZ from new and still still love it to bits. Prolly keep it forever.
Same 2019 and I've already "replaced" it but oops forgot to trade it in! Will keep it forever, I'd think....
How do you guys not have a Patagonia sponsorship yet? Fastest sweaters on RUclips
The fact that a Supra gets the same mileage is insane.
It's the valvetronic system in the BMW engine. It reduces throttling losses. But remember, you are paying double for that sophisticated engine.
Can confirm. Weather tech got my last sale on my 18 Durango. The mats suck. My wife's 13 Benz c300 mats also suck too! Tuxmat looks awesome! Nice review and always guys
Went to the dealer to try out a GR86, but none were available (and may never be). HOWEVER, I did get to drive a '22 Supra - found it to be quite capable at ~400 hp, quality feel, tight (be
Mine had the alternator go out at 3k miles 😆 still wouldn’t trade it for anything else close to this price and at the track it’s still a monster
Subaru quality.
You need a TuxMat sponsor after this video.
I bought a set for my moms Honda Passport and she loves them.
I wanted something better than WeatherTech for my new 2020 KIA, so I took a chance on TuxMats and they’ve been awesome! They cover everything, liquids won’t spill onto the carpet, you just wipe them down with Mr. Clean and you never have to remove them!
Great content to start the workday! Thanks for it always
Honestly I’m finding as a car enthusiast, no matter what car you buy, it will still need brakes tires brake fluid bushings and PPF anyway.
This is Most accurate feedback on RUclips for GR86 , best bang for buck and diamond in the rough. im gt86 owner and I love my 86 , best car I have ever owned, yeah better than Miata , but there fantastic cars as well. Your completely right on how expensive cars have gotten and the scarcity and difficulty even to attain them today is horrifying. im glad I got my GT86 before markups for them. best part BTW Physical handbrake 😁 , I hate that modern car have that crap Eltronic button for brake, keep that on Auto not manuals smh
Once you're with Savagegeese, you're with Savagegeese4Life!
this review is spot on. im running very similar parts down to the dampers. but mine has aero.. i cant full enjoy the car without worrying warranty.. and i paid extra for extended warranty
A goose held me up when I was trying to get a Beef n' Cheddar at the Arby's yesterday, when it happened I knew I was in for a banger episode.
I **really** want one of these - however, Toyota USA's seemingly blanket denial of warranty claims when folks pop motors (several friends) is basically a no-go.
If you’re worried about engine warranty get the brz, subaru warranties everything as long as its stock and there’s no signs of over revving
I really enjoyed how you tied this to the start of your car reviewing journey.
in terms of views change, so true... i got a s2000 10 years ago and went from just a street car to full blown race car and because life changes and costs i sold that and got a brand new brz 5-6 months ago with the intent of a street car to go get groceries or a fun drive + the track days and time attack. also side note, do you want to sell the ohlins?!?
Watching the videos with this car over the past 12 months, I feel like its now on of the family. I'm getting one.
The biggest flaw in the GR86 is the Subaru powertrain. Most of that can be fixed with a K swap though...so I guess factor that into the cost of the car.
You'd lose a lot of torque and the low COG though.
Why pay for two 4-cylinder engines, one to replace the other, when you can buy a used Corvette and get two of them at the same time? ;)
@@mightbesherwood1313 TBH when a C7 can pull down 32 MPG on the highway, you have a VERY valid point.
@@bearclaw5115 You overestimate on both those points. A K24 is just a better platform than the Subaru motor no matter how you cut it....even without discussing forced induction.
Just an all round no frills, tell it like it is slick/pro video! 👍🇬🇧
