This episode was exactly what you’d expect from chibnall. I’m just glad his era is over with. @@-haclong2366 In germany we say "Verschenktes Potenzial", she would have been a great doctor but without the proper showrunner the best actor would make bad epsiodes
Every doctor has had a finale specifically designed for them. Power of the doctor like 13, is messy, inconsistent, and riddled with errors but enjoyable. I can't wait for what RTD David Tennant and Ncuti Gatwa will do next. (Also I loved Jodie's regeneration scene, it was easily the best since 9's. But her cause for dying was shit, she is just hit by some random laser!)
I feel like the regeneration degeneration thing probably had something to do with it too. Also 7 just got caught in a gang shooting and and 4 just fell to his death.
It was definitely surprising… I mean it did say alot about Jodie’s Doctor as this playful child and the era as a whole messy and full of inconsistencies like a kid would be. I feel like Capaldi’s regeneration needs more praise he did give a rather nice speech and though it kind of lost some of its initial emotional affect since it could’ve been quite sad and beautiful with him in the battlefield in the Doctor Falls. I think Twice Upon a Time was a rather wholesome story felt rather christmasy in that Capaldi’s regeneration isnt so sad emotional more bittersweet with him getting to see some remnants of his companions. Twice Upon a Time isn’t some monumental episode obviously but it’s really a good final episode for Capaldi. Both the speech in the Doctor Falls and Twice Upon Time are so nice.
You need two extra lines to make the plot make sense, the master is at the end of his regeneration cycle and the doctor has unlimited regenerations. This’d make the plot make sense and tie it in to all the classic stories about the master trying to get around the 12 regeneration limit.
@@ptolemeeselenion1542 He brought the show back in the first place and was a big part in getting Tennant and Eccelston cast so he has a good eye for casting clearly and his first run of the show was very solid, so I reckon he'll do a great job again. I mean the show was at its peak while he was originally in charge
@jack alefounde He never mentions that in the episode, even though it would have made much more sense as a motive, and would have given a poorly-conceived storyline at least some satisfying weight and payoff. In "Power", all the Master says is that he wanted to ruin the Doctor's reputation, something he could have done by just pretenting to be the Doctor (or by leaving 13 to continue to do it herself...)
To be fair, besides obviously being excited for David, I actually think I am more excited for Ncuti. I will say first that yes, it's only one short scene we've seen with him, and the Jodie scene when Capaldi regenerated was nice (or so I thought then at least). However, I was a little afraid at first that Ncuti might look a bit childish or something like that (not sure why, maybe from the few picture I have seen with him) but from the scene, I am hooked up. He seems a bit angry (something we have barely seen with Jodie), serious, more imposing, and I want to see more of that. Again, I know, it's just one scene that doesn't say anything at all about how he will portray the Doctor, but after the disappointment that Jodie's try was (for me at least), I just want to believe.
I am extremely hyped for this new era, I have total faith RTD will nail. My only worry is the music, Murray Gold’s themes were always a big part of the show for me.
the master dancing scene broke my heart cos it showed the true potential of the actors in this era of doctor who if only they had some good scripts to work off..
Its such a popular misconception. Good actors shine through even the worst of scripts. If they had been any good, we would've seen it, they had 3 seasons!
@@AC-jl7hb I think a good imitation if even that, he felt unique enough to me not as good as simms or gomez though. Small gripe tho I hate Jodie Whittaker doctor but when the master is on screen it's better even if a little bitm
Knowing that this was going to be the final episode for Chibnall, I just watched it and enjoyed it for what it was - just another overcooked and too stuffed episode from the pen of Chibs. It was fun. It had Ace and Tegan. It had Doctors from the past. And it had a surprise ending. That was good enough for me.
What I am worried about with Tennant coming back is that it could potentially be setting Gatwa up to fail once he does take over. Don't get me wrong the following Doctors were great to good post-Tennant (Jodie was a good Doctor with bad writing) but the fact that Tennant's Shadow still loomed over the franchise and fanbase til now hopes RTD doesn't give him the shaft if his first series falls below expectation.
I think the scenes with the past Doctors were great, including the ones where Ace and Tegan meet hologram versions of their Doctors. It was fan service, sure, but I feel it was well done fan service. I also really love the comapanions finally having a group to talk about their adventures, something I'm kinda shocked hadn't happened sooner considering how often old companions began poppping up in Modern Who. I especially feel it's fitting that it's Graham to be the one who set it up. I think Jodie's regeneration was good as well, even if everything leading to it was meh. It made me think of your video on what the best Doctor Who regeneration was and how you put Eccleston's at the top because it wasn't overly emotional, didn't have speeches or trips down memory lane and the Doctor accepted his fate. Jodie's regeneration ticks all those boxes for me, especially in regards to acceptance with her "Tag, you're it" line. Didn't really care for the background visuals admittedly, as it felt overly saturated and fake, but I did love the regeneration effect, even if I couldn't help but say she was Christ the Redeemer. Finally, I'm still iffy on David being back because I don't want it to become "The David Tennant Show." I worry his existing popularity will be boosted with the specials, and that, when he leaves, people won't be able to accept Ncuti Gatwa as well as they should and that they'll think Tennant should've stayed on for Series 14 and onwards. Also, Doctor Who was almost cancelled when Tennant and Davies left back in 2009, so if Gatwa's performance causes a drop in viewership after the specials, they might actually cancel it. I feel my worry is already somewhat justified because I've seen people saying that they'd love to see Tennant pop up throughout Gatwa's era, something that would undermine his run because people would be freaking out that the "Golden Era Doctor" showed up. I honestly feel none of the Doctors should have come back as the 14th for the reasons above, with one exception: McGann. He's the only exception I have because he's only had a movie, a short and a cameo in PotD, which, to me, means he isn't nearly as well established on screen as the other Doctors are. Like, I know McGann is loved by fans despite his lack of screen time, but his popularity is nowhere near that of Tennant's, so I feel him coming for a few episodes before leaving again wouldn't be as risky as Tennant. That's just my opinion though.
3:42 - self loathing. Before he turns back he says "Don't let me go back to being me" he hates who he is and wants to be what the Doctor is but he can't be and that is destroying him. I think that's what is so interesting about this incarnation of the Master, he's tragic really. Even back in Series 12 he was like "I wouldn't of minded if the death particle had gone off and killed me, I would've been okay with that but here we are, all still alive" This Master is so layered and I love it, this is a big reason why he is my favourite But yeah I absolutely loved this episode, it was both a fantastic celebration of Doctor Who while also being a beautiful swansong for Jodie Whittaker. She got the end she deserved and then some! But if you didn't enjoy it that's fine, like you said it is art and all art is subjective and that's wonderful, it would be boring if we all had the same opinions!
Definitely my most favorite episode of her run.. I finally actually saw the doctor in her character.. Too bad it was too late.. Great regeneration scene though.. The king.. Has returned
It definitely in true Chibnall fashion wasn’t perfect, but at least there was a lot love, from The Master dancing to Rasputin (which don’t about you but I definitely got huge Sound Of Drums vibes off of) to the return of some the classic Doctors as well as Ace, Tegan, Mel & Ian. And I love that Jodie stepped outside onto what looked like Durdle Door to regenerate rather than just do it in the TARDIS like they’ve done before, and to cap it all off with David doing the classic “What!”s at the end definitely made the worth the watch for me
jodie's doctor became a comfort for me during lockdown so i got very invested in the storylines regardless of the quality of them. i had definitely latched onto the chance of the doctor and yaz having some sort of romance but any actual possibility of it from the previous two specials was definitely just fan service that they then wrote off as close friendship which was sad :( i think the episode itself was just kinda fine, it had lots of fun parts to it but when i was talking to my friends about it after watching we realised it wasn't that memorable as we couldn't think of how it had started. jodie did so well bringing her rendition of the doctor to life - i just wish she'd had some more dramatic storylines. also we love mandip gill the way she can act just with a facial expression and bring so much to the character is amazing :D
I believe yaz and the doctor are confirmed to fancy each other, which makes it frustrating that they end up agreeing to just stay friends instead of taking risks and allowing themselves to be vulnerable, which kind of undermines the message for me that its worth putting yourself out there even if you get hurt. Would've been much more impactful IMO, even if it would've been a little tragic giving them only the space of one episode together.
I’ve said this a lot all over this place but I just need the anger and the darkness from all previous incarnations of the Doctor that was just lost in Jodie’s era, I feel like there is plenty of room and Ncuti has plenty of range to let that happen
I disagree. I was tired of all the angst and PTSD writers threw at the Doctor, even after the Time War was more or less resolved. Jodie’s Doctor was fun and optimistic, a nice throwback to the Davison era where she was alien, but more of a big sibling than anything else.
@@benwasserman8223 I did enjoy that side of Jodie’s Doctor but what I mean is her absolute lack of any history before her as if she hadn’t been through that stuff, even just getting angry at villains like in Rosa she just didn’t really get annoyed it just felt empty and Peter’s Doctor had gone past the time war but still had that anger but not necessarily PTSD or anything to do with the time war, just seriousness, I prefer it as doctor who is a scifi drama not like a water down kids tv show
@@benwasserman8223 it also started with the doctor attempting to leave Ian and Barbara stranded in the stone age because they forced their way into the tardis maybe the descriptor of "kids show" is really unhelpful because it contains a massive spectrum of TV, i mean by that logic Bargain Hunt and American Horror Story must fall under "adult show" and be pretty much equal because of it
I actually agree. Despite me knowing all of the flaws with the plan, and me agreeing with all of its criticisms... Well, most of the criticisms anyway, I'm trying to imagine this sort of plan happening in the classic series, and I imagine people literally saying it would be too dark or something.
The main points I disagree with in this video are the scenes between 7/Ace and 5/Tegan, and Dan’s exit. I think all of those scenes were very deliberate choices- ejecting Dan at the start of the episode establishes it as a story about how the Doctor is “bad at goodbyes,” and the tension of the episode is how that trait has impacted her relationships throughout the years. Tegan and Ace’s scenes with the hologram are all about giving them closure, and solidifying the central theme that the Doctor/companion relationship is stronger than any kind of bitterness or alienation born out of a lack of goodbye.
Nicely put. Dan leaving so early was a bit odd but on reflection gave Yaz more space to just be. And I can only parrot the comments about Ace and Tegan's talks with their respective Doctors. It was closure for them and a treat for us the fans to see past compnaions and classic Doctors - not just archive footage; they were a highlight and credit where credit is due, well handled by Chibnall.
I had literally never realised why I dislike the look of this era until you mentioned all the close ups, as soon as you showed the trailer footage I felt way less confined
you have to remember that this episode wasn't just 13s last but also BBC's centenary special. That's why they have the fan service of previous doctors talking to their old companions and those companions being there in the first place. It was 13s special yes but it was also a monumental moment for BBC and Doctor Who
Maybe the reason Yaz didn't get a kiss was because the Doctor didn't fancy her. I mean, just because she fancied the Doctor doesn't mean the Doctor needed to reciprocate feelings for her in that way...
@@rileymartin2202 Agreed, they already talked it out on the beach in Legend of the Sea Devils, bringing it up again here would feel cheap. I'm glad they just had the pair of them sharing a quiet last few moments on the Tardis roof - props to Mandip on the 'holding back the tears', she could have gone full tear floods but it was much more genuine. I liked it this way.
@@Beerbaby I think the BBC would get upset if they said it out loud but the implication at the end of Legend of the Sea Devils was VERY heavily that the Doctor likes her back. Honestly I found it frustrating that they established that YET didnt actually allow them to enter a relationship, since I feel it undermines the message that its still worth it to put yourself out there and allow yourself to be vulnerable, even if it ends up hurting later.
@@angrywizard3199 I watched that episode and it seemed like the doctor liked her and was trying to be empathetic, poorly as usual, but she wasn't sure, didn't know, if she wanted to be in a romantic relationship with her. Ultimately this Doctor was not an emotional person of much complexity. It makes sense that her idea of intimacy would be eating ice cream.
I actually loved this last episode with Jodie. It was brilliant! Not saying that I loved this of this era but we had amazing episodes like Rosa that I just adore. It’s Doctor Who! It will always have a special place in my heart.
Up until 3:10 I fully forgot I was watching a video about Power of the Doctor 😂 I’m so excited about Doctor Who for the first time in five years so my mind just went straight to the 60th
I overall enjoyed this episode and am sad to see Jodie depart as much as I'm excited for the upcoming RTD2/Tennant/Gatwa era. I think you have been right about what is causing the waning enthusiasm amongst fans with 13's era, especially the issue with constant closeups and common sense missing from big story lines. Like, I dont really need too much of an explanation why Graham was in the cave but it is pretty important for the Master's plan in this episode (and his part in the timeless child story line).
The fourteenth doctor has been nicknamed the bridge doctor, as it’s a bridge until the fifteenth doctors schedule is open for ncuti gatwa to shoot his doctor who season
While I found the episode ok, it does kinda make sense that the Master wanted to become the Doctor. In season 12, the Master was so furious that the Doctor was a part of him because of the timeless child so in his mind he sees the Doctor as the most ideal timelord and thus wants to become them. It also makes sense in terms of the Master wanting to become all powerful as becoming the doctor means that he will get unlimited regenerations.
The episode felt like it was written by a drunk, amnesiac child. Watching it with my parents was entertaining however. Not because it was good, but because of how awful it was! Honestly could not stop laughing
Actually Matt Smith has gone on record in interview (maybe after this, I don't know when) that if he came back he'd want to play The Master. So that idea of the master impersonating a doctor might be on the table
I did enjoy this episode. Pretty sure the Master stole the doctors body because he wanted to ensure the doctor couldn't stop him any more, and take the doctors tardis and life to ruin their reputation. I had assumed Graham was in the volcano because because he noticed the Daleks were in the volcano and came to stop them, like Sarah Jane did in School Reunion with the Krillitane. I've had a few issues with 13's run, but thought this was a good finale all things considered.
I've been generally onboard with the Chibnall era since series 12, but my main problem with The Power of the Doctor, which was a similar problem that I had with Flux, was that we had nearly 90 minutes in this episode, loads more than we got in anything from the first 7 seasons of the show, but there is SO much crammed in there it all just kinda flies by before we have any time to sit with it. The Master forces the Doctor to regenerate? The regeneration is a copy of the Master in both mind and body? That is HUGE! That should be the most Earth-shattering thing that happens in the show, let alone the episode. But it just kinda happens for a bit and then Yaz reverses it easily. "Degeneration" they call it. The announcement that Disney+ is gonna be the new international home of Doctor Who will be a weird adjustment, but it gives me hope that they'll approach it similarly to how they do episodes in the Mandalorian, where they're as long as they need to be, not filling a quota or cut down to keep things consistent.
No matter what you think of the episode, I think we can all agree that the masters rasputin dance and his doctor costume being a mix of all the past doctors was pretty funny.
despite the trust I have in rtd as a show runner for who, and the positive vibes I get from the Tennant, Harris, and Gatwa as actors, I'm goddamn terrified the Ten³ specials are going to be bad.
Alternatively they are going to be so amazing they'll overshadow the fifteenth Doctor and set a bar he can't possibly clear in his first season. So our best hope it's they'll be okay 😂.
What happened last 30 minutes to me: watched an old video of the best opener -> got very hyped for that 5 series video went to the channel to watch it and the search led me to the old Tennant video -> and that video led me here and now at 07:58, I hear you saying the series 5 video will be released in the future that's very funny.
Completely agree with your comment on close-ups. They’ve been absolutely everywhere throughout Chibnall’s era and I don’t understand why. They are distracting and, as you said, make the show harder to watch.
What's crazy is that the Master actually already did a body swap with the Doctor and ruined his reputation, way back in the time war, and the big finish warmaster box set the War Master Volume 5.
Never watched any of 13's series, only clips of episodes here on RUclips, but this last special was a pleasent surprise. Almost everyone was saying this was going to be a dumpster fire, especially Flux and the last sepecials feel flat, but I thought this last one was handled really well which was surprising.Yes, there were the typical head scratchers in there and some non-sensical elements, although Doctor Who by nature is non-sensical, but for the most part it worked for me. It was very much fan service, but that's what made it enjoyable from seeing the old Doctors to how they interacted with Ace and Tegan and the Master playing the Ra Ra Rasputin song was classic! And Tenent, his 15 seconds was pure gold! Too bad Chibnall's era wasn't more like this from the start. And the Timeless Child? Lost to eternity most likely, we'll never get an explaination for that.
Chibnall couldn’t write in Tennant as the Master because he had no idea the show would even be continued and not cancelled when he was writing this special. He wrote it as if it were the last episode of the show. He only learned RTD would be showrunner after filming ended.
I personally loved the episode even though I wasn’t super fond of Jodie’s run as a whole. I’m a sucker for fan service so I was super hyped seeing previous characters returning even though Ryan didn’t. I never disliked his character but I never felt super interested in him either so him not coming back didn’t upset me at all
Is it just me or did Ncuti's little scene in the trailer give you some serious 9th Doctor vibes? He just sounded so pi***d off and they've even got the same hair lol
I quite liked the episode. Pro tip: Just pretend that when you see the doctor as the master with sashas face, just petend it was done so the audience woud not get confused or something and its actually jodies face or any face you like! ( I was bothered by that as well )
It felt in character to me for the Master to want to directly hijack the Doctor's life and replace her rather than just cosplaying as her. The plan was messy and dramatic, and that felt very in-character too. Efficiency and reliability isn't really what the Master's plans tend to be about.
How is David Tennant back, and why did his clothes seemingly regenerate with him this go around? Here's my personal working theory on the matter: In DWM, there were particular quotes/comments made by Russell T Davies that were brought to my attention (thank you crispy pro). "Doctor Who Magazine: Together Again...But How?" "Then again, maybe, just maybe, this return is so impossible that it's actually an intricate illusion created by an old enemy of the Doctor's." "Of course, I wouldn't give that away in the pages of DWM, would I? But then again. This magazine is the first place I ever revealed the name of Billie Pipers Rose (in issue 340). So read carefully. There are truths in here." I think the doctor's clothes changing during the regeneration has something to do with it, with this potential elaborate illusion by one of his old enemies. My working theory is that Jodie does actually regenerate into Ncuti Gatwa at the end of 'The Power of the Doctor'. We know that Neil Patrick Harris will be playing a villian for one of the 3 60th specials, as potentially the celestial toymaker, a 1st Doctor Villian. Like Crispy Pro comments, what better way to celebrate 60 years of Doctor Who then by bringing back a classic villian. I believe his character is tricking the doctor into believing he regenerates into an older face (Tennant's), when in reality it's actually Gatwa. That's why during the next time trailer, we see Gatwa in the 14th Doctor's clothes (Tennant's) but with a different face. It seems awfully weird that the doctor's clothes wouldn't/don't change again when regenerating into Gatwa during the specials, if that's what indeed happens. But then again, this is just my personal theory, so take it with a ginormous grain of salt 😆!
you know, it's kinda a weird feeling being excited to watch doctor who again the new trailers look both modern and nostalgic, it has the doctor who vibe i have missed but still fresh that is what the show is i keep rewatching the trailer smiling because i get the watch the doctor who that i genuinely love and have grown up with. chibnall doctor who imo was bad, but as it went on story-wise it did get better, but it never felt like doctor who. by the end it was fine, but i wasn't happy. now i am happy
After the last two seasons I had zero expectations going in. The first half was a chaotic drag and had me constantly check the time 'Is it over yet?' and I only had some fun by checking off my mental chibnall-bingo card (though I think, it checked "unnecessary exposition" a few dozen times over). Having actively watched the show since 2005 and having done some research into classic, I knew about the old companions and a lot of the references, but still a lot of it fell a bit flat to me - maybe some older or more hard-core fans found more pleasure in that? And then the second half / last third came around and suddenly things felt much more---... well, they actually started to "feel". Still, not everything was stellar, but suddenly at least some dots connected, a few t's were crossed and things clicked into place - some rather nicely, actually. Even without knowing the old companions properly and never having had a chance to really get to know the new ones (one of the many Chibnall issues) them working together and interacting did cause some feelz - but... at least to me, Journey's End not only did it first, but it had felt somewhat more "epic" then. Maybe it was the soundtrack. In the literal end, I actually squealed a bit at the regeneration. I am still unsure whether it was because it marked the end of Chibs or because of Tennant's appearance. I am a bit curious why his clothes changed too, this time, tho. I still occasionally rewatch my faves from any previous NewWho series. But I'll probably never rewatch anything from the Chib-era. I sincerely hope, that much like Flux had little to no impact in Chibnall's own writing, the majority of events and "lore" from his era won't impact much going forward, and if so, will get "retconned" into a better, more comprehensive and traceable and more engaging context. The 13th Doctor did not go out with a bang. But a fizzle and pop and a singular spark at the very end. I wished the representation of a female Doctor had been in better hands... But this is what we got. And now we'll get to see what comes next. Fingers crossed!
I'm rewatching 'The End of Time' and the cafe scene with Wilfred where Donna is outside shows how a Tennant/Tate return could work. The doctor needs Donna to make him laugh.
Would be kinda cool if 15 is the one to seal away the beast but in doing so he has to form the black hole, condemning all the planets that fall into it and all those that die because of it
I don't think he is the 14th. It's probably the same marketing tactic they used in the "Next Doctor " where they acted he was the 11th version to raise doubts.

I really liked Power of the Doctor. It was basically what I hoped it would be. fast, bombastic and fun The Chibnall era has been my least favorite though I'm still a fan of it either be for ironic or unironic reasons. I get that RTD has a story reason for Tennant to be 14 but it feels backwards to me to go from the first female Doctor to the fan favorite one. I do get not wanting the New Doctor actor to deal with the height of the diamond anniversary but there were better ways of approaching this.
@@BeckyBookClubMain yeah, but this is a pretty desperate way to do it, don't ya think? granted, it'll only be for one episode, but it still feels like the equivalent of giving the baby their bottle.
I loved Jodie's more sweet, kind and slightly batty behaviour. I felt the regeneration was very much 'her', and so appropriate that she went in a joyous manner.
The doctor and yaz arc was there but a kiss wasn’t needed for that instead we had them enjoying each others time devoted to protect each other with show not tell
hearing Disney is heavily involved and giving production funding makes me simultaneously excited and terrified. this could be a triumph of an era, or a massive sanitisation of the show that loses the core appeal- like Torchwood: Miracle Day, the last time a massive US corp got heavily involved with Who.
A lot of nostalgia-driven smoke and mirrors amid the clutter and noise of an overstuffed plot didn’t really cover for just how little was happening. Chibnall ended his run much liked he started with a tepid meh instead of a bang. Truly unfortunate that Jodie never got better opportunities and the one thing they could have delivered that might have been a winner, the Yaz and Doctor pairing, was avoided at every turn.
What did you think of Power of the Doctor?

Lol.

@@ptolemeeselenion1542 how…
You need two extra lines to make the plot make sense, the master is at the end of his regeneration cycle and the doctor has unlimited regenerations. This’d make the plot make sense and tie it in to all the classic stories about the master trying to get around the 12 regeneration limit.
I am very confident RTD2 is going to be a whole lot of fun for the actors and for the fans. I've got my faith in Russel.
me too!
Can we just call him R2D2, lol
I'm not hoping that much.
Bringing back Murray Gold would be the icing on the cake however, I wouldn’t mind he got in someone else with a similar vibe.
The idea if Eccleston coming back as the master is so cool. Just hearing you say that made my jaw drop on how cool that’d be
The TimeLess child arc was so bad even its creator decided not to mention it
I disagree, The knowledge of the timeless child was why the master wanted to take the doctors body
@jack alefounde
He never mentions that in the episode, even though it would have made much more sense as a motive, and would have given a poorly-conceived storyline at least some satisfying weight and payoff.
The twitter brgade is going to make this polotical and play the race card just like they played the gender card. I'm not hopeful.
I won't lie I've been very critical of this era but I loved this episode. Very fun and a nice regeneration for jodie.
I’m glad you enjoyed
I am extremely hyped for this new era, I have total faith RTD will nail. My only worry is the music, Murray Gold’s themes were always a big part of the show for me.
You never know he may be back for the 3 specials
In the Ncuti vid the Who page released they're using Murray's Series 4 theme instead of anything more recent. Maybe that's a sign? 👀
not only a part of the show, it really set the feel for 9 and 10
the master dancing scene broke my heart cos it showed the true potential of the actors in this era of doctor who if only they had some good scripts to work off..
Sacha Dhawan definitely deserved better, he was by and far the highlight of this era for me!
Its such a popular misconception. Good actors shine through even the worst of scripts. If they had been any good, we would've seen it, they had 3 seasons!
@@AC-jl7hb He shined through many times

Knowing that this was going to be the final episode for Chibnall, I just watched it and enjoyed it for what it was - just another overcooked and too stuffed episode from the pen of Chibs. It was fun. It had Ace and Tegan. It had Doctors from the past. And it had a surprise ending. That was good enough for me.
The highlight for the Chibnal Era for me is definitely The Master. I loved the Actor and the personality, even if the character was off
What I am worried about with Tennant coming back is that it could potentially be setting Gatwa up to fail once he does take over. Don't get me wrong the following Doctors were great to good post-Tennant (Jodie was a good Doctor with bad writing) but the fact that Tennant's Shadow still loomed over the franchise and fanbase til now hopes RTD doesn't give him the shaft if his first series falls below expectation.
Jodie was a bad doctor with bad writing, but otherwise I agree
That's just my opinion though.
agreed 💯
3:42 - self loathing. Before he turns back he says "Don't let me go back to being me" he hates who he is and wants to be what the Doctor is but he can't be and that is destroying him. I think that's what is so interesting about this incarnation of the Master, he's tragic really. Even back in Series 12 he was like "I wouldn't of minded if the death particle had gone off and killed me, I would've been okay with that but here we are, all still alive"
This Master is so layered and I love it, this is a big reason why he is my favourite
But yeah I absolutely loved this episode, it was both a fantastic celebration of Doctor Who while also being a beautiful swansong for Jodie Whittaker. She got the end she deserved and then some! But if you didn't enjoy it that's fine, like you said it is art and all art is subjective and that's wonderful, it would be boring if we all had the same opinions!
I mean, when Graham and Ryan left the Tardis, they said they'd planned on investigating stuff like that, so it checks out for me
Definitely my most favorite episode of her run.. I finally actually saw the doctor in her character.. Too bad it was too late.. Great regeneration scene though.. The king.. Has returned
IKR, it's like it took Chibnall until the regeneration scene to finally write her really fantastic. Kinda tragic.
For me, the master's plan was perfectly in character
The Rasputin scene was genuinely amazing. perfectly protrays the insanity of this version of the master
I’ve said this a lot all over this place but I just need the anger and the darkness from all previous incarnations of the Doctor that was just lost in Jodie’s era, I feel like there is plenty of room and Ncuti has plenty of range to let that happen
Basically, just make doctor who a drama again rather than a glorified CBBC “drama”

Your idea about the master turning into 9 would have been amazing
Thank you!
Maybe I've watched too much classic, but the Master's plan felt perfectly in character and I didn't blink once at it 🤷♂️
I actually agree.
The doctor did but a kiss wasn’t needed for that instead we had them enjoying each others time devoted to protect each other with show not tell
@@rileymartin2202 Whatever works for your headcannon. The Doctor also rejected Martha Jones affections even though he cared for her as a companion.
@@rileymartin2202 Agreed, they already talked it out on the beach in Legend of the Sea Devils, bringing it up again here would feel cheap.
Honestly, for an episode called Power of the Doctor, it doesn't focus much on the Doctor. Rather focuses on companions
Here in Seattle there is a popular shop called Patagonia, so I was imagining Ryan shopping for a rain jacket or hiking boots.
That 7 words from Ncuti are enought to predict that he will be a great doctor.
He is a great actor and will fit perfectly, im so excitet!
One line of dialogue from Ncuti Gatwa and I'm sold.
I’m so fucking hyped
I feel like a lot of your questions could be answered with 'This is an anniversary special.
As somebody who stopped watching shortly after Peter Capaldi started, I am excited to see what RTD brings back to the table.
The announcement that Disney+ is gonna be the new international home of Doctor Who will be a weird adjustment, but it gives me hope that they'll approach it similarly to how they do episodes in the Mandalorian, where they're as long as they need to be, not filling a quota or cut down to keep things consistent.
this felt more like an end of a series episode than an end of an era or doctor
jodie deserved better!
i think the reason he's back is cause the Master messed with the Doctor's regeneration. he went back to the last factory setting that worked

No matter what you think of the episode, I think we can all agree that the masters rasputin dance and his doctor costume being a mix of all the past doctors was pretty funny.
No, we really cant. It was so cringe! Also can Chibnall come up with his own original idea for once?

went to the channel to watch it and the search led me to the old Tennant video -> and that video led me here
and now at 07:58, I hear you saying the series 5 video will be released in the future that's very funny.
Completely agree with your comment on close-ups. They’ve been absolutely everywhere throughout Chibnall’s era and I don’t understand why. They are distracting and, as you said, make the show harder to watch.
Yeah it’s mental how much they overused it. It’s become synonymous with the era
What's crazy is that the Master actually already did a body swap with the Doctor and ruined his reputation, way back in the time war, and the big finish warmaster box set the War Master Volume 5.
This just means more opportunities for Tennant to do more Big Finish audios
Lost to eternity most likely, we'll never get an explaination for that.
dan: im leaving
doctor: ok 😀👍
Chibnall couldn’t write in Tennant as the Master because he had no idea the show would even be continued and not cancelled when he was writing this special. He wrote it as if it were the last episode of the show. He only learned RTD would be showrunner after filming ended.
I personally loved the episode even though I wasn’t super fond of Jodie’s run as a whole. I’m a sucker for fan service so I was super hyped seeing previous characters returning even though Ryan didn’t. I never disliked his character but I never felt super interested in him either so him not coming back didn’t upset me at all
I’m not calling Tennant 14. Much better to call him 10-2, Final Fantasy style

Here's my personal working theory on the matter:
In DWM, there were particular quotes/comments made by Russell T Davies that were brought to my attention (thank you crispy pro).
"Doctor Who Magazine: Together Again...But How?"
"Then again, maybe, just maybe, this return is so impossible that it's actually an intricate illusion created by an old enemy of the Doctor's."
"Of course, I wouldn't give that away in the pages of DWM, would I? But then again. This magazine is the first place I ever revealed the name of Billie Pipers Rose (in issue 340). So read carefully. There are truths in here."
I think the doctor's clothes changing during the regeneration has something to do with it, with this potential elaborate illusion by one of his old enemies. But then again, this is just my personal theory, so take it with a ginormous grain of salt 😆!
you know, it's kinda a weird feeling being excited to watch doctor who again
the new trailers look both modern and nostalgic, it has the doctor who vibe i have missed but still fresh that is what the show is
i keep rewatching the trailer smiling because i get the watch the doctor who that i genuinely love and have grown up with. chibnall doctor who imo was bad, but as it went on story-wise it did get better, but it never felt like doctor who. by the end it was fine, but i wasn't happy. now i am happy
I just hope David Tennant’s 14th Doctor won’t be as frustrating to me as his 10th Doctor in Series 2 and 3
The master and ace/tegan trading "insults' was so bad, loved it
Yep!
eccelston as the master would be a killer twist
This series I think will bring back my love for the show
After the last two seasons I had zero expectations going in.
Chibnall knew he was on the way back.
So he really just dropped the ball and showed even less care.
I'm rewatching 'The End of Time' and the cafe scene with Wilfred where Donna is outside shows how a Tennant/Tate return could work. The doctor needs Donna to make him laugh.
I think the reason the Doctor looks like Ten has to do with the reverse regeneration from the special.
I've literally had the same idea of Eccleston returning as The Master!
Great minds :)
Would be kinda cool if 15 is the one to seal away the beast but in doing so he has to form the black hole, condemning all the planets that fall into it and all those that die because of it
The episode was written as the Centenary special instead of Jodie’s finale, and it shows.

I get that RTD has a story reason for Tennant to be 14 but it feels backwards to me to go from the first female Doctor to the fan favorite one. I do get not wanting the New Doctor actor to deal with the height of the diamond anniversary but there were better ways of approaching this.
The show needs to return to popularity.
I agree
@@BeckyBookClubMain yeah, but this is a pretty desperate way to do it, don't ya think? granted, it'll only be for one episode, but it still feels like the equivalent of giving the baby their bottle.
@@erubin100 After a steamroller that was Chibnall, I guess they have no choice!
I love that we're getting Tenant back, but I think it was a real missed opportunity not to use McGann instead.
I loved Jodie's more sweet, kind and slightly batty behaviour. I felt the regeneration was very much 'her', and so appropriate that she went in a joyous manner.
Peter capaldi showed up in "Fires of Pompeii" from 10th doctor series :)
The doctor and yaz arc was there but a kiss wasn’t needed for that instead we had them enjoying each others time devoted to protect each other with show not tell
First time I’m excited for ‘WHO in a long time
hearing Disney is heavily involved and giving production funding makes me simultaneously excited and terrified. this could be a triumph of an era, or a massive sanitisation of the show that loses the core appeal- like Torchwood: Miracle Day, the last time a massive US corp got heavily involved with Who.
Yeah I was so disappointed by the queerbaiting. Probably the thing that pissed me off about the episode, honestly.
Same, it’s such a limp final ending
I'm sooooo hyped for this new season!!!!!
I was constantly wondering why on earth anything was occurring but it was very fun 😂
Goodbye Biddy B. and Crusty Chibnall! Welcome back, The Doctor!
Bro you gotta send that Eccleston idea to BBC that's gold
A lot of nostalgia-driven smoke and mirrors amid the clutter and noise of an overstuffed plot didn’t really cover for just how little was happening. Chibnall ended his run much liked he started with a tepid meh instead of a bang.
Truly unfortunate that Jodie never got better opportunities and the one thing they could have delivered that might have been a winner, the Yaz and Doctor pairing, was avoided at every turn.
I think Master's motivation is the continuation of his jealousy and rage over Doctor being a timeless child aka so effin special
