I literally only flip my canvas to change the angle of my strokes so it's more comfortable. Which is a lot, but it's still primarily what I use it for. If there's a flaw in my anatomy or drawing, I will notice it regardless of it being flipped because if I noticed the flaw, then it's within my knowledge of what's right. Flipping's not going to magically make me notice something I don't know, either.

Something that really bothers me personally is how abstract art is treated.
I do abstract painting myself, it helps me to understand my own emotions and cope with situations, and it kills me when I hear someone say "You're not a real artist.". Think what you will of the skill of abstract artists, but for the love of god don't tell them their art isn't real. You don't know why we do what we do, we hardly know either, and our paintings or sketches are like a tree full of carbon y'know? Chop it down, you kill the tree, and poison the atmosphere.

    • @wondaraptor
      @wondaraptor Год назад +58

The same goes for hyper realism. If abstract art treated badly because of "lack of skill", hyper realism is not people's favorite because of "lack of creativity". Bruh people, what's the matter is PROCESS, not just the final beautiful picture.

People tend to confuse abstract with industry abstract, same as those who confuse stylized art with industry style.
Abstract can be beautiful, and I'm very fond of surrealism myself. But I absolutely loathe low-effort industry abstract. The kind of stuff you see being sold to millionaires that makes you think, "well this is clearly a money laundering scheme".
Banksy is a really good example of an abstract artist who genuinely SHOWS how abstract can make a difference. You FEEL the chaos of their work.
As for whatever-their-name-is who made the blue-canvas-with-white-stripe painting sold for millions of dollars? No fucking way that had any ounce of "feeling" in it. You know what I felt when I saw that news? Dumbfounded.
That is to say, there is nothing wrong with making the kind of art that will get you money, even if you have to throw away your own idea of what art is, but people can still have an opinion about it. Picasso may be famous, but I personally do not care for Picasso. I'm more of a Van Gogh enthusiast. And that's totally fine if someone disagrees.
Don't feel too hurt if people hate on you for making abstract art. After all, your art is actually the most profitable amongst millionaires. So that's something!

This exactly. I knew someone on Instagram who has done nothing wrong at all. They do art, and made an Oc to pair with an existing character of a show. Because the Show-character is a Villain, said person made their Oc to also have some villainous tendencies. Seems logical, right?
Well, only found out recently that a couple of people didn’t really like this person, and wanted to started drama. It sucks because these band of people used to be the friends of the artist, but I guess betrayed them.
And I think one of the few things that the group of people try to start drama on, was for two reasons. One, because the artist apparently draws an obviously toxic ship, said Artist must have been a supporter in real life. And second, because the Artist traces.
Which especially the first reason I find is ridiculous. Cause I obviously see that the artist is self aware enough not to support toxic things. But they are just having fun.

I resonate so much with "artists are constantly chasing an art style and want to get into the industry immediately." When you said artists should be allowed to enjoy art on the side and as a way to relax. I love creating things and making art, but I don't know how I want to continue with it in the scope of my life goals. I've tried the art side hustle, I've gone to school for art, and I've gotten bachelor of fine arts degrees, but I am having such a hard time pursuing art as a career. The ingrained "starving artist" beliefs are so hard to undo, and dealing with rejection is especially difficult for me. I would love to work on creative projects for a living, but it's not realistic for everyone that wants to do it.
Currently I work in food service since that was the first place that got back to me when I applied for jobs. I know it's a privilege to be promoted to management and have decent pay, but the job comes with physical pain from standing, constantly changing hours/schedules, and so much mental strain. Art is what keeps me sane. I can't push the stress of making art my job on the only thing that comforts me right now, so I'm glad that you're trying to normalize that all artists have their own reasons for making art and their own pace for improving.

Ehhh I dunno, art drama has been a real thing for years. Even famous artists have had beef for many years. About 10 years ago, I faced some "cancellation" myself over absolutely nothing (the nothingness being... well.. literally nothing. Someone decided they didn't like me so they made stuff up about me and spread that slander everywhere within the community we were in lol). I was too mature to wanna deal with that kind of drama so I asked myself, does it really matter if I post my art online? Do I really need that validation? I decided the negatives outweighed the positives, so I deleted my account and told the drama-starter to fuck off.
My personal experience aside, I've been seeing this same shit for many years on RUclips alone. Kids and beginners have always been getting bullied for their art; I mean seriously, does anyone ELSE remember DeviantArt in its heyday???

  • @nomoretwitterhandles

I remember witnessing an art RUclipsr destroy her own career in real time. I don't even remember her name anymore (as it's been YEARS), but what I do remember is I looked up to her for a long time.... until she posted a video claiming "art block isn't real; you're just lazy". At the time, I had undiagnosed depression (edit: it has since been diagnosed!!), which had kept me from making art for years. It was like a punch in the face to be told I was actually just lazy all this time, that I wasn't making art because I was sitting on my ass doing nothing. Art block does exist, and it exists for many reasons. CAN it be laziness? Yes, definitely. But that does not apply to MOST artists. And I say "most" because, let's be real, a LOT of artists have their own personal struggles that are varied and unique.
Clearly many of her viewers felt the same way, because a lot of them left negative comments. There was a lot of disappointment from her own community, and she desperately tried to save face by apologizing, but by that point, people realized she let the fame get to her and it led to her being cocky enough to share her awful opinions in the first place.
If that wasn't bad enough, another RUclipsr actually responded to her video, calling her out for what she said. And I gotta be honest, I thought it was so stupid for them to respond to it. At first it was just one over-confident idiot sharing their dumb opinion; now it was TWO idiots sharing their opinions. THAT creates drama. Then, more and more people felt the need to pitch in with THEIR opinions. It got old really fast. That was when I decided to dip from the art community for a very long time. Clearly everyone felt the need to share their opinion on why I had art block...
Anyway, after time passed, I forgot about that drama (until now). After so many years, you start to realize how insignificant their behavior is. And that's why I feel confident in my art. Nobody can define me except for me. I get to choose what I do with my art. And everyone else gets to choose their path, too.

I agree with the post about race swapping characters. I'm black myself and it can be kind of weird when I see a popular character's race changed. I mean it's up to the artist that they can do what they want, it's just I think it's better if an OG, or an already diverse character was made instead. Also I think there's *less* likely of a chance of any backlash if you don't change a character's traits, like, skin color, gender, race, sexuality, etc. I said less but as we know bullying or harassing could still happen, even if the person didn't change anything in an art piece.

Honestly, why cant bad artists exist?
Whether you're bad or good at something, you have the same fucking right to do it as anyone else.
The good were also bad once.
but, hear me out, what if you never become good?
Who cares? Even if you're not improving, or don't want to, you still have the right to do it.
I do think one has to be self aware tho.
I'm not the greatest, I'm passable at best and I'm aware of that. I'm trying to improve again (I had to stop drawing for a while and it really brought me 5 years back), but even if I didn't want to, I'm still gonna do it. I like doing it.
Am I supposed to just quit college because twitter said so? fuck no.
I gotta be honest and say, there is bullying in college. I myself am guilty of making fun of ppl.
BUT the ones ppl make fun of are arrogant people who think they are the best when they actually aren't. They're terrible people, who completely fuck things up for others and the environment in class also suffers for it.
The chill ppl who recognize they aren't the greatest are good. as a matter of fact, if you make fun of them, you'll be the one to be ostracized.
I am the 1st to make fun of my own stuff and I ask for honest criticism (a lot of times I'm not given it bcs ppl are afraid of hurting me. ive since asked them to stop doing that.).
This is the best way to become comfortable with failure.
We're human. We fail, we aren't all skilled in the same things and that's totally fine.
It doesn't make anyone less then.

There's a connection between the "flip your canvas" advice, and the "beginners don't know the right questions to ask" sections. If an artist is too new in digital art, they might not understand what they are looking for when flipping the canvas. Their eye isn't trained to notice the things that stick out, and might not feel like it's worth it. I know this one from experience, since I will sometimes flip a drawing, and I feel anxious if I don't see anything wrong. Of course, maybe there's nothing wrong, but my brain is spookily saying, "maybe you just don't see it."

I’m being honest here, *you* were one of my first sets of inspiration when I was still new to the art community. I’m not great at perspective or anatomy so I’m still learning as an artist and practicing proportions of different body shapes. I love your art just as much as anyone else’s art even if I don’t know them. I’m almost always comparing myself to better artists and as self sabotaging as that sounds, it actually drives me to draw more and makes me yearn to improve as an artist.

Or if you draw something slightly different than usual people will also unfollow instead of just scrolling by if they don’t like that specific artwork. It feels like theres such a pressure to please everyone every single time an artwork is posted and to only create what my followers want to see instead of what makes myself happy to draw. Separate comment on the furry fandom. It's diverse group, to say the least and there are certainly art bullies on public sites (DA and Twitter). However, in the actual furry sites, you can see all sorts skill levels on different mediums, from folks just starting out on printer paper to digital DaVinci's. You can have artists who can barely hold their stylus steady on a simple C Curve and artists who can do photorealistic with a No.2 pencil and a sheet of printer paper.
Usually so long as you tag and rate your stuff right, you're good.

The bullies took screenshots of my art, shared it with their group, made fun of me and my work, and decided to spam my commission post with nasty comments. It wasnt until my brother messaged one of the bullies that they stopped. Idk what was said, but it stopped almost instantly. I even got an apology. My brother never told me exactly what he said. He just told me, "they had no room to make fun of you. Their art is trash." 😂 i absolutely dont condone bullying, btw. Thee thing about race swapping is so true, in an example like the live action Ariel, it has the same concept/storyline as the normal Ariel..but she's race swapped. The problem with.things like this is that it doesn't add anything to the character's personality. It's just the same person with a different skin color, they don't reflect on they're history or give them cultural outfits or new things they love and hate. They don't reflect on the problems or struggles that a colored person might go through, or any person from that matter. As a person of color, It's hard to feel connected with a "different character" when it's just the same character in someone else's skin.

One thing I hate about how some people sees art is how realism is "real art".
It makes beginner artists, and sometimes even experienced ones, feel like they need to draw realism and make their art look realistic even when they don't enjoy it, just to prove a point. Just to show that they do know realism and they can make "real" art.
The thing is; Anything that you make with your creativity and imaginations, be it digital and traditional art, sculptures, crafts, .etc Is art itself. Even if you have cartoony or anime art style, all of that is real art. Art style is just the way you draw and stylize things.
You don't need to make something in a way you don't enjoy to be validated as an artist.
It's fine when it was made to improve your art, you have to learn the rules before you break and bend it as you wish, after all. And it's also alright when you don't like that and just wanna do what you want. Art is supposed to be enjoyed.
What matters is that you enjoy your crafts and the people who likes your work for the way it's done and supports you.
Not everyone will like what you do and share the same taste.
P/s: Just because an artist draws with a cartoony style, it doesn't mean they don't know realism. Most of the time, they DO, in fact, practice and learned realism without posting about it. The art style of an artist doesn't equal to their skill. (ex: If an artist draws circular Animal Crossing hands it doesn't mean they don't know how to draw the entire hand anatomy.)

I hate "popular" artists and their ego, not everyone is like this but I'm so tired of the elitism and adults playing being kids in highschool, I get it that "art idols" are people just like us. But just because someone has great art doesn't mean they can get in their way to be assh0les with other people. Also in risk of being controversial I'm tired of artists being too PC while drawing the most nsfw stuff possible, etc. It's also sad that young artists don't get their places anymore, it would help if they get a community for themselves to share and give fair feedback to their art. Also anyone who discourages other artists from doing art just because they fear competition are thrash people and don't deserve any clients tbh, some ppl needs to pay bills to live. We have to help eachother no to destroy ourselves with jelaousy, insecurity and resentfulness.

man that last one hit me so hard. im in a small friend group who are all artists in varying stages of their art. im often asked for advice as i'm generally the most experienced as i've spent a lot of time to learn and have people who can guide me along the way but it's often really hard because its super hard to just tackle everything they need to work on. we all are artists but we also all have incredibly different styles and methods which often dont mesh well with another's. it gets frustrating for both parties because the one learning feels no improvement while the one teaching sees the same mistakes repeatedly made. that paired with my general ineptitude at being a teacher, it gets really tiresome. luckily, there has been some noticeable improvement over time. it's been slow, but its there, but at the same time i feel as if i hadnt been able to contribute very much to that improvement.
on another note, with the growing toxicity in the art community, its starting to feel like the room to grow is starting to shrink. the community is supposed to be a safe space to share and grow but with how horrible its becoming, that feels like it wont be as such anymore. it feels like i wont have anywhere to go to properly pursue an art career that i want. the best advice doesnt come from tutorials, but from people actually seeing the work who can critique it personally. however, the community seems to have forgotten what constructive criticism is and resorts to just berating everything about some work they dont like.

My art journey was born in Deviantart, and when I tell you that the attitude on there in 2013 prophesized how the art community in the future would be.....

i have joined the bandwagon of criticizing other artists for mistakes they have made without consent, or those whose art styles are stylized before. even going so far as to bully them and cause drama just to get some attention for myself and let them know "i am better than them"-which, funny enough, i am not. that goes the same thing for copying and referencing, and i learned that the hard way as soon as i realized i became like those bullies i hated. i agree with one comment about the art community being full of hypocrisy as well.

    2:44 I completely agree, tbh.
Like, I’m very fixated on my improvement as an artist and animator, BUT - this is a choice (a free minded one, I hope) Like, I made a conscious decision to try to often leave my comfort zone to improve. But, if you are bullied and pressured into improving - that’s some bullshit.
Also. You really need to ask yourself how you want to improve. Because there’s endless ways. It’s not like there are one right way. I have a feeling that many people think that improving is just about somewhat classical western concepts of art like perspective, anatomy, color theory, portrait similarity etc. But no, it’s just one way out of many. For example, if you’re very comfortable with, for example, perspective and anatomy, your way of improving might be not pushing these concepts further, but the opposite, for example, trying to draw childishly and breaking all of the usual rules.
What I’m trying to say - it’s gotta be a conscious and mindful decision and process

Art is an expression of yourself and humanity. Traced, painted, sketched, it all derives from your emotions and your heart; some people don’t like tracing but it’s a great way to practice and I’m doing some of it right now (unless you’re stealing something, don’t do dat). That’s why I hate something like AI art, I don’t care how pretty it gets, art is a reflection of humanity in all of its shapes and forms, AI art is a soulless being attempting to recreate who we are. Even if your art is ‘ugly’ or ‘abstract and weird’, that’s just an opinion from people who don’t understand how important that drawing is to you, even if it’s ‘ugly’ on purpose. Just keep drawing the style or types of art you love and don’t get too wrapped up in what other people think of it, constructive criticism is one thing, bullying is another. I don’t know I just feel like people can be so harsh, I don’t like every single art style I see but I’m not gonna ridicule the artist and call it bad because I don’t like the style, that’s just stupid. It’s like calling a video game bad because it’s not the type of game you like to play. Anyway, I’m ranting, keep drawing if it helps you heal or express yourself to the world and don’t let others moderate how you want to be seen.

Aspiring artists have completely given up their dreams of being artists because they were relentlessly bullied online by the art community. Some have even gone on to commit suicide.

If you're going to commision someone or request art, please be kind and considerate. Especially if the artist is doing it for free. I had my first request a couple days ago, and while the person was mostly nice, when I sent them the finished product, they told me part of it was wrong and to do it again. (Mind you, I did this for free, so I wasn't getting paid for this request.) No polite language at all, and honestly rubbed me the wrong way. Like, dude, I'm doing this for free, the least you could say is "please" and "thank you."

2:25 is EXACTLY how I feel about a somewhat small part of the Genshin Art fandom and other art relating to the darkening of skin. Skin ≠ rep, I feel that sure--Rep is needed, but just doing it because it looks pretty is absurb. It's a insult to the artist/creator of the character and an insult to race.
Honestly, I'm just done at this point with 'race being an aesthetic.'

This reminded me of one time not too long ago someone posted a redraw of Ariel (redraw being a scene from the live action trailer) and used the cartoon ariel (since she wanted to draw her childhood) saying she was feeling inspired and everyone started attacking her and calling her racist. (One posted a painting study of Halle and it got more likes the drawing that was QRT) and honestly, i feel like all that hate was misguided. Like not once did she say she preferred the classic ariel she said she watched and loved the live action movie and wanted to see classic in a bed of jellyfish. And what didnt help was that English wasnt her first language and she would like replies that are actually passive aggresively racist but she didnt understand that since this also happened when Twitters auto translate was bugging badly. So the artist was harrassed and called horrible things cause she wanted to draw her childhood design cause she felt inspired by the current one.
Like it was pretty harsh to witness

I had someone insult my art (and me as a human being) because I called her out for being racist. "I looked at your profile again and threw up a second time" "if you're thinking about pursuing art in the future...don't. This isn't supposed to be a personal attack, sorry" like...what? You're not even an artist bro😂

I don't know why, but i want to comment this, i think the best decision for artist(not only) is to delete all the social medie they use not for learning, because it just makes you unhappy about your art(not only)

I want to talk about social media bullying in general. I'm not surprised honestly. It's 2023 social media and most of the internet users are bullies now. When you say that they are being offensive, they are gonna say "why is everyone so offended these days" "stfu" etc. they say these things after saying the most offensive thing. I'm tired of seeing bunch of adults bullying every single thing they saw like middle schoolers. And even worse, they are acting like bullying is a GOOD THING TO DO AND PEOPLE SHOULD DO IT. They litterally justify themself by saying "If you post yourself in social media I can bully you I have right to do" I'm just tired of this and it breaks my heart that art community became a part of this. I make art, because I like it, it's fun, can be stressfull sometimes but still, i love it. People can make art for many reasons, but i think, it doesn't matter if you're not having fun and don't like making art. How do people suppose to like making art after all these bullying?

IDK I think I agree with the fact that, beginners to spend time thierself and get frustrated then ask the specific question about what to improve and how to improve. It's shows that beginners have had spent time and trying to learn. We as humans have tendency to not take advice seriously unless it's necessary or immediate, so I think it's better these beginner figure out where are they sucking at. Art is simultaneous process of input and output and unless these beginner doesn't thrives to produce output with what input they have, the new input will be just falls in waste.

I love your videos, because it gives me a glimpse of what the mainstream online art community is like. And it boggles my mind of how toxic it is! Most of the points in these (community aspects ones) are just common sense, like helping newcomers and to not be a bully. It makes me grateful that the art community/niche at Tumblr that i am in is much more fun and non toxic, probably because of the site's culture of curating your own experience and avoiding drama like the plague. Though i do have a taste of toxic art communities back when i frequent my country's local art community on Instagram, where everyone is so against "woke" that it looped back to plain ol racism, xenophobia, transphobia and homophobia.
