Thank you, enjoyed the trip in the Way Back Machine, almost brought tears to my eyes. Was on the Connie for most of the 3rd WestPac, a black shoe, worked in the Power Shop (E- Div), first duty you learned there was how to use the overpowered buffer. Being USNR sailor was only a part timer, and after a few screw ups spent most of my tour of two years TAD. Cleaned the Chief's quarters, our quarter's, went to Vents and Voids Div. for the duration of drydock at Bremerton and ended up seeing just about every inch of that ship, including your space, where they kept the Nukes, under the keel, bridge, walked on one of the propeller shafts while we were on Yankee Station, stood watch in after steering so actually steered her during a drill, new Captain told me personally to shape up sailor, got to dump tons of stuff off the fantail, enjoyed watching take offs, especially at night, learned to sail in Subic Bay ended up buying one, saw the Great Budda, Tokyo, Hong Kong, mostly spent a lot of time avoiding anyone over E-3 in rank and first time on board in Japan went down a little too far got to see the brig and lucky me never saw it again. Thanks shipmate really didn't see it at the time but was the adventure of a lifetime, not a tear did I shed, but almost, no BS.

In mid July of 1973 the Connie was the main ship attached to the task force that was up North in the Tonkin Gulf, near Haiphong & Hanoi Vietnam, standing guard as the U.S. Navy Mine Sweepers were de-mining the surrounding waters entering the Harbor of Haiphong. My ship, the U.S.S. White Plains AFS4 was with the Task Force. We were providing food and supplies. I was standing on our Helo Flight Deck watching Vert Reps to the Connie and her escorts. My Engineering Officer, WO2 Bill Beer was standing next to me watching. He turned and said to me, "Grohman, That's your ride home" as he pointed towards the Connie! "Go pack your sea bag and be ready for the last chopper to take you over to the Connie!" I ran down to Engineering Berthing and packed my sea bag in record time, said "GOODBYE" to anyone who was in earshot, and was back up on the Helo Flight Deck in 20 Minutes! Three other shipmates were already standing and waiting with their sea bags as the last chopper came back and landed. We proudly saluted WO2 Bill Beer and boarded the awaiting Boeing UH46D Helo, that shuttled us over to the Connie. We found our way down to the Connie's Engineering Berthing and grabbed a bunk. I sailed on the Connie for 4 days watching flight opps, launches and landings, as I roamed around her unrestricted. I felt a strong sense of relief that I was going home. NO DUTY, just kicked back and waited for her to go back to the Philippines and Subic Bay in 4 days. Once in port at Subic, we disembarked the Connie and then caught a U.S. Navy Bus that was full of American Service Men. Then after a one hour fast and noisy ride, we left the bus and we all boarded a PAN AM 727 that was full of anxious U.S. Service Men. It was our flight home! That big old jet airliner, was taking us back to the United States of America! There were men from the Army, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Navy. The flight was to Anchorage Alaska, where it quickly refueled in an hour and then it was back in the air, on to San Francisco, California. It took us around 14 Hours to reach the Mainland. Once we landed, we arrived at Treasure Island, by another gray U.S. Navy bus. I was quartered in a barrack for the night and processed out the next morning. I was released from the U.S. Navy and my "Active Duty Obligations" on August 26, 1973, after serving in the U.S. Navy from March 19, 1970. The U.S.S. Constellation CVA-64 was a fine ship! The crew that I had the honor to meet in the four days that I sailed on her were all OUTSTANDING! Thank You for making my trip back home 53 years ago, a BLESSING to me! You all are my Brothers! Sincerely, David W. Grohman

You think life was rough when we were at sea. NOT EVEN CLOSE, life in the Navy was really tough. Our ancestors had TESTOSTERONE to the Max.

You did an outstanding job on the model sir. There are many differences I see between the model and the Connie in 1964. She was my first ship and a grand one she was. I spent the most of my time in V-1 Fly 3. After I made E4 I spent about a month assigned to V-6 division in the AE shop. They discovered I had been working flight deck so they assigned me to the flight deck as Flight Deck Electrician. I was responsible for all the flight deck power stations for the aircraft.

I met your Dad and I guess Mother at a Constellation Association Reunion in Norfolk, VA - I was onboard years after your Dad. I told them about the Collision 26 June 1980 and had him laugh so much. We worked in Jet Shop the back of the ship, while the ship was scraping the side during the Collision. My Best friend Steve Shoback threw a Soda can at it, saying, "GET AWAY FROM HERE".

I loved the Connie and the shitty kitty. I had TAD orders to bring her around the horn. Worked my ass off on the kitty in the PNSY. man, that was hard work, but it was awesome to see the kitty brought back to life. I knew the Cinnie would be in good hands and be rebuilt. It hurts to see them both be torn apart like this. BM3 1stdeck div. My family and home. My first-born son was the first and the last to be Baptized on the Kitt's forecastle. It kills me to see them rot like that. Became a Horned shell back on the connie. Will miss them both. Thank you for sharing this. Looks like you had good shipmates. P.S. how bac you get busted down for missing the ship. LOL! Hopefully you just got 3 days BnW.

What I dont see is the rip in the side we got on KERMIT Station On REP by a LIBIAN TANKER it took out our Millele Capabilities on our Left side But we could not go to SUBIC for repairs as the MIDWAY who was coming to replace us was hit by another Libyan Tanker and had to return to SUBIC or sink !
