I was on a tiger cruise in June ‘89 for 8 days as a guest to my officer brother from Seattle to San Diego, Once in a lifetime experience I’ll never forget. This video brings back some great memories. Thanks
How can you not like the Connie, it was the first time flagship of America! I spent two deployments in 77 and 80 it was the best experience of my life. I wish I could go back!
Yeah, I know. I find myself still thinking about that ship a lot. Sometimes when I'm walking, I still feel and hear the sounds made when walking about that ship.
AT2 Taylor IM3 92-94...was on her coming home around The Horn. Thanks for posting this. I have the tape someplace in my piles of stuff. God Bless shipmates!
My last cruise was not the Connie. I was on Admirals' staff at the time 1976. A great ship, fantastic crew, and air wing. The sight, and sound of an F14 launching in full burner at night is burned in my memory as the most powerful expieiance I ever had on a carrier.
JO3 Frede Weldon here. helped make this video and had ALWAYS wanted a copy!!! THANK YOU to whoever posted this!! Loved my time on the Connie and this video brings back SO MANY memories!!!!!
Awesome video! Nice that they showed a few of us gals from that trip. We were the first 60 women to every be on an aircraft carrier. I hold a great deal of pride to have been apart of that.
C Cooper Very cool. I didn't realize that. It was my first ship and I reported on board the summer prior to leaving. I didn't realize the females weren't on it prior to that trip. Head in the clouds and too busy trying to get her ready for the trip I guess ( I was). Congrats on making history!
Fun fact: The Forrestal and Kitty Hawk classes had a higher top speed than the Nimitz class. (The Nimitz designers prioritized volume in the hull over hydrodynamic efficiency, figuring top speed doesn't win wars, cruise speed does. The Nimitz' cruise speed is greater than the conventional carriers because it does not need to conserve fuel.)
bt3 here and I want to say this made my day. I got on her in Philly and left the day she left for west pack. To watch a huge part in my life was incredible!!! Thank you so very much
I was a BTFN when I met Connie in Philly and left her Sept ‘94. I started out in 2MMR to 4MMR. Thank you for this video…brought back a lot of memories and miss my shipmates!!!
Brings back so many memories. Got on the "Connie" October 1992 when she was at the Shipyard, and took her back home to NASNI in July 1993. Thanks for uploading this video!
I was there with you, 77-81, VF-211, the Squadron that was so TOGETHER, and had all the bad luck. SO MUCH IS FORGOT, your SQUADRON LOST 3 F14's and yet no one will post the actual loses. I was there. I hated those loses, how can a SQUADRON be so unlucky compared to VF-24. I was AIMD, and if you are truthful, you know what I am telling you. VF-211 and I were the CLOSEST. I Know a lot of your Brothers. Seems like life is unfair. VF-211 life was unfair and yet, you were the best. Finally, God Bless America, USA, Constellation and any DECENT human being. Bobby Estey CV64 77-81 AIMD / IM-1 and IM-2 bobbycv64@yahoo.com
I served on the USS Belleau Wood but my childhood friend served on the Connie. His name was FN/BT3 Cole. I think he served from 1987-91. He got out when the Connie was in the yards in Philly.
I was aboard in 1971 to May of 1973. We did two Nam cruises. In worked below decks the first six months. Was able to transfer to the flight deck. V-1 division. Blue shirt. We worked 14-16 hours straight for 49 days one time, no time off. I would end the day with two eggs over easy on top of two pancakes, sweetned with honey. Best time of my life. Was hard then, but I was 23 and had lots of energy. Our home away from home while " On the Line" was the city of Olongopo, Philipines. Best part was the island get away, Grandy Island. There was a hotel to stay over night, a restaurant for food. Rented snorkling supplies. Such a tremendous variety of fish. We steamed past this island as we were pulling in to " Po " City. Too bad Connie was scrapped. Cheaper to run than a nuke. The Navy will figure that out.
Hi Sipp. August 1968 to 1972. V3 div elevator operator and blue shirt plane handler. The years of the air aces. Had a friend sucked into an A-7 intake at full throttle, Sad. Survived the shoe shine boys of Olangapo. Went back and married the prettiest gal. What an adventure.
i was on her from 1991 to 1993 i remember it was chaos when the flight crew arrived first time seeing the snow on the ocean i remember going thru the ocean one morning the water was so smooth the only ripples were from the connie cutting thru the water
Proud to have served on this Boat for two West Pacs and a North Pac Cruise... and various work up cruises while attached to VF 21 Freelancers F14 A Tomcat Squadron, out of NAS MIRAMAR...from from 1986 to 1989....
1972 / 1976 Gulf of Tonkin/ A-3 division. This is not a drill. Battle stations, Battle stations. I still miss her God bless the Constellation (Connie), and every crew member that served. US Navy. Always
Ozzie, I watch that all the time. BTW, it was an O7 Commodore Decker, not an O5 Commander. What is a Captain in the Navy O6. Constellation was also the First USN Ship 1797, the 2nd is in Baltimore and the 3rd the Carrier CV64. CV64 Constellation, first to strike VIETNAM and IRAQ2, and much more. Constellation was the first in everything. Thank you OZZIE, for mentioning the DOOMSDAY MACHINE :-) Where the CONSTELLATION resqued the UNIVERSE :-) Yes, CAPTAIN KIRK destroys the Machine: ruclips.net/video/TsQ3mm0Tm08/видео.html
I think I can claim to be the oldest crew member of the Connie among the commentors. I was attached to her at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and was on her shakedown cruise when she caught on fire. Four sailors killed and about a dozen others seriously hurt.
i remember hanging out of the damn chopper with the stupid video camera tied off but i wasn't!!! the air crew member told me we had other camera operators, but only 1 camera!!!!! lmbo!!!!!
Independence in Philly sucked! asbestoes and the cold winters. I do miss the cheese steaks and party at Rosevelt Park ! minus the thugs kicking our ass!!! lol GOOD TIMES
I remember having to testify to two fellow shipmates murdering another shipmate and than tossing him overboard. It was the oddest thing because they thought I couldn't understand English but me and four other shipmates heard them bragging about it in Spanish.
@@jasonbabila6006 Unfortunately, the Midway isn't really a supercarrier, but sort of in between the WW2 fleet carriers and the supercarriers of the Forrestal class. I should probably have specified the ships as Cold War supercarriers, because the Midway is basically still a WW2 ship.
Spent 8 years onboard her , brought her back from that useless shipyard to San dog . Engineering got screwed we had to fix everything that piece of shit place did to her
This is both bullshit and inaccurate. The USS Kittyhawk cv 63 was three feet larger in length and 18 inches wider in beam then Constellation. The Kitty Hawk was in late 1960's second largest under USS Enterprise at that time. This documentary is pure bullshit
this ship was a big part of my 24 years in the navy served on board as a ABFan from 76-79, ABF1, 83-85 and ABFC 92-95 thanks for the video.

Unfortunately, none of the conventionally powered supercarriers were preserved, not even as museums. All have been scrapped or soon will be.
