- Chef Lara Lee, author of the cookbook “Coconut & Sambal,” is making gado gado, a salad that will transport your kitchen to Indonesia. Gado gado, which means “mix-mix,” is one of the national dishes of Indonesia and per Lara, it’s a salad for a very hungry person. This salad can be made with whatever veggies you have in your fridge; Lara makes her with tomatoes, broccolini, green beans, potatoes, and more. She adds pan-fried tempeh, firm tofu, hard-boiled eggs and plenty of other mix-ins. It all comes together with a rich and spicy chili peanut sauce. Check out the recipe here: www.vice.com/e...

I need to heal my eyes after watching Jamie Oliver's gado-gado. Thank you for making the proper gado-gado!
🤣
Same here. I needed to know how to make it properly.
same 😂

🤣🤣🤣
Indonesian cuisine can be as simple as blanched vegetables with some sauce or as complicated as cooked for 72 hours with 50 different ingredients.
Beautifully described 👍🏻
Yep exactly
Yeah agree with this, we can just wash some veg's ,chopped it , and added sambal on top of it and it's called 'lalapan' and added peanut sauce on top of it then we called pecel or gado2,
50? not really in practice. nowadays some ingredients is hard to find
Maybe i'm just exaggerating, but some dishes require a lot of spices.
Some ingredients is common in one area but not in others, so maybe you're just looking in the wrong place. Even the same dish can vary in different city, like "sayur asem" or maybe we can call it "tamarind soup" in english, can have different vegetables in it even tough they share the same basic spices.
That wok is gorgeous.
In javanese, that motive generally called "blirik" and we basically have a pretty decent complete kitchen and table stuffs in that motive e.g mug, saucer, plate.
@@bimakristataaditama5644 That's very cool! Thank you.
where can i buy it?
@@miloodidi If you go to Indonesia, probably in art market
Uncle Roger approved
Gado gado is fire. Getting the right peanut sauce mix is absolutely key for it. Everything else is secondary.
Added with crushed boiled potato and coconut milk and cooked it again on the stove. That's the original sauce recipe.
Gado Gado is sold for IDR 10k as street food but high-end salad store here renamed it as 'Indonesian Peanut Sauce Salad' with exactly the same ingredients and people queued for IDR 150k 😂
you ain't go shit bro, just apriciated what the price
it's like you eat on regular food stall / hawker and then you compare with 5 stars hotel restaurant
or michelin star restaurant
you gotta be shitt'in me bro
@@flurry9592 chill bro, im just saying. If u no matter paying 150k for that is okay

Mental 😆
The power of rebranding :D
Kid: mom i dont want to eat vegetables
Mom: how about gado gado
Kid: YEAAAAAA GADO GADO!
kids nowadays never liked veggies but gado gado. thank you so much for whoever invented it
I'm grateful to be able to eat a good gado gado, not just boiled broccoli 😂
@@viclusiv agreed , not just plain raw salad with olive oil
It's the fucking same lol
For me the best Gado-Gado peanut sauce is when you mix Red-skin Peanut and Cashew.. after that blend it together with Chillies (i prefer Spicier), Garlic and the rest of ingredients.
Premium gado-gado seller use cashew.
this is the correct way to make gado-gado, i came here after watched jamie olive cook gado-gado with wrong way
and also always use fried peanuts to make all kind of peanut sauce in indonesian food. like batagor, gado-gado, pecel etc.
that was legendary enamel blirik frying pan i believe every indonesian own atleast one at home
Yes, yes..
Blirik the legend.
Not at this time.
I love gado gado...good job Indonesia ..your food is extraordinary
Wow, I'm from Indonesia and I'm really happy to see this 😃
Even though some people thought she was missing some ingredients, I was still happy. Because I know she has tried his best to make a gado-gado with ingredients that are easy to find there.
Stay healthy and happy everyone 😊
I'm glad I'm watching this right before doing groceries
Have you tried it?
Hope you did and loved it.. 😂
Missing cabbage, water spinach and chayote, but meh, the point of gado gado is to execute the dressing properly anyway and she does it properly so it’s all good~
Never ate any gado gado with water spinach and chayote before...
There are probably as many recipes for this as are Indonesian grandmothers, and all of those are fine.
Except the abomination Jamie Oliver made of course.
Shout out to THE LEGENDARY WAJAN ‼️
Soo cute
I know..
Lol.
If my mom sees me serving the long bean not on a bite size.....she's gonna yell "no man gonna marry you!"😅
Hahaha my grandma will be like "u want choke ur family??!"
@@binarlestari2497 so freakin relateable😭
🤣🤣💯
These foods along with rujak and pecel are my most favourite foods
Came from uncle roger roasting jamie oliver's gado gado...hahaha
My fathers house worker in North Bali makes amazing gado gado. he peanut sauce has been passed down for generations. sooo good
The original sauce is using crushed boil potato and coconut milk mixed with crushed peanut and seasoning. Cooked until it's boiling.. the texture is smooth.
I love the kecap manis hack using soy sauce and palm sugar
Here are our best foods from Indonesia :
Rujak Cingur
Rawon
Gudeg
Pecel
Batagor
Tuna Balado
Nasi Goreng
Bakwan / Bakso (meatball)
Sop Kikil Sapi
Soto Daging
Rendang (padang)
Sop Semur Daging
Sop Buntut
Iga Sapi Bakar
Sate Ayam
Gulai Daging
And so many more 😂
Come to Indonesia, come taste our food i dare you guys ❤ you will love it !!
If you can find some chayote, boil it until it's kind of soft but still crispy, the julienne it and add it to your Gado2. Boiled corn kernels are great too. If Gado2 is your thing, search up for kredok, pecel, and ketoprak too.
People bitching:
1. She comes from a mixed house.
2. AND most importantly, if you don't combine different flavors from different cultures in the XXI century, are you even cooking?... Experimenting and combining flavor is what cooking is all about, clearly you people lack the imagination that gave birth in the first place to traditional recipes.
Plus she giving good advice and alternatives during the whole video.
Hit it right on the head. It bothers me when people act like you can’t play with your food. Cooking is one big experiment! No one would know what is good to eat unless they experiment
Yeah let's toss durian for spaghetti sauce and stinky bean for pizza topping. How about that?
Don't you dare using your European or American standard for authentic Asian foods. Cause for some of us, foods is sacred.
When you change one or two ingredients and how you cooked, you can get different food. Like gado² is similar with pecel. One blanched and the other raw. With similar sauce but different veggies. And this video right here using green bean for it which is part of pecel not gado². At least use something like morning glory or cabbage then you gtg.
@@chimergo6501 not European nor American... I had the opportunity to travel around the globe and from southeast Asia the best "food" will always be vietnamese (it could be from the north, south, coast, mountains, cities, country side) and you know what they all have in common... Heavily influence by French cooking... And most "authentic" asian food is heavily influence by ingredients from other part of the world, and I'm going to give an example... Every chili you use comes from south america, every tomato you use comes from south america and you know how the came to Asia, via trade with Europe, may I also ass the cabbages just like you suggested come from Europe.... You sir are just a bitter ignorant. Plus you have an anime pic as a profile, so I can't really have any respect for you.
@@chimergo6501 sacred what? A lot of indonesian cuisine influenced by Chinese cuisine and modify it their own and called it their own.
@@jeanku You don't need to tell me about where is A and B come from cause i have culinary degree, i teach culinary art, i know about that and where those veggies come from ain't important.
The problem is, she ruin the texture and authenticity. Even if she can't find the original ingredients you can find something with similar texture. But broccoli and green beans isn't one of them. Call me purist if you want, but i just tell you the truth. Cause in Indonesia, even though the food have similar ingredients but if how the way they cooked, served is different and where the food come from can change their name.
2021 and we still talking about anime profile pict as problem? Bruhh you stuck on 2012 or what?
i know you're thinking, "i don't wanna put this peanut sauce on it", but guys, you gado 😏
I'll see myself out.
Boooooooo 🍅

This type gado2 look so rich and so classy that they would put a price for 30k but it's worth it!
This is such a great video! The host is so down to earth and confident about her cooking! I am definitely going to try this recipe at home, albeit with far fewer ingredients in the salad.
Add with crushed boiled potato and coconut milk, keep stiring it even it's boiled. That's the original gado2 sauce recipe..the texture is smooth and delicious.
As its name, gado-gado or in English mix-mix, you can freely add whatever you like as long as it blends well with the peanut sauce...which almost anything
tell jamie that this is the correct way to make gado gado
Thank you Mbak Lara Lee for sharing our beloved salad to everyone. Good luck with your book!
Ooooh! When I first read the title, I knew your name sounds familiar! I got the book for my bf’s mum for Christmas!!
The vegan ppl would like this, i already make this for my self about 6 month ago and i still eat that for my lunch
Lunch is a perfect time to enjoy gado2
Yessss, more Lara Lee please!!!
I love Indonesian food!😋❤
a Nice plate of food made by a very lovely lady...
That’s a beautiful pan/wok
yea what the hell is that wok...
Yes please tell us where you got that wok? Thank you
I need it!
@@mixeddrinks8100 it's enamel wok with traditional javanese kitchen utensil pattern, easy to find in Central Java, not sure if outside of the country, I might be better become Amazon Seller for this, lol.
@@ranggiarohmansani still can't find it... it looks pretty darn amazing
I am gonna need some local asian basil leaves (kemangi) for some more freshness LOL
You can replace peanuts with almonds or cashew nuts. I do it all the time when I can't find fresh peanuts. If I may suggest, don't use plain water to mix your peanut paste, but mix it a bit with a piece of tamarind or a tea spoon of lime juice.
The core of Gado-gado is the sauce. Using different kind peanut will affect the taste.
You can substitute the veggies, but not the peanut & kecap manis.
Wow looks nice :)
Anyway, I usually have my gado-gado with these ingredients:
Lontong, lettuce, cucumber, mung beans sprouts, carrot, fried tempe, fried tofu, boiled eggs, and the crackers are much smaller than you use in your video.
I came here after the abuse of Jamie Oliver’s Gado Gado 😅. Once I saw you mix those blanced vegggies with peanut sauce, I knew you did the rest well 😁♥️🙏.
Yesss more Indonesian food please
Indonesian food are delicious. I love dado gado
Gado gado is best and tasty salad ever
Looks delicious 😋... but i wanna add tamarind paste, lime leaves, and fried shallots in the peanut sauce 🥰
Nasi pecel hits the spot too.
Well you've done the right way with mortar and pestle don't switch to blender the end result is different. The tastiest gado2 is the traditional one and sold by street vendor, I've never tasted tasty gado2 in luxury restaurant or hotel in Indonesia.
Life gets busy T-T
Chili and garlic in peanut sauce it's for other recipe : we called it KETOPRAK ( keh thow prack) gado gado just simply with chili and peanut with tamarind , baked shrimp paste, palm sugar ( gula Jawa/gula malaka) a bit of salt..and water that just it
Thanks for cooking İndonesian recipe. İ love gado gado, I miss home country cookıng.
this is a gentrified version of gado gado lmao
bukan gitu my G, when you live abroad it is hard to find the ingredients traditionally used in gado2, so you have to adapt your gado2 to your environment
It’s munchies/vice, what do you expect? Lol
we dont usually use brocolli but i guess you can mix any kind of veggie in there,as long as you par boil/blache it in hot water for a while. what makes it gado gado is the peanut sauce.
salad for hungry person.. nonton abis ketinggalan sahur, duhhh🤤
I like your frying pan.. reminds me to my mom’s legendary pan😍😆
Thanks for the spotlight and don't mind the whining tryhards of my fellow Indonesians. It's your version of Gado-Gado using the ingredients available there. Top it with peanut sauce and it'll be perfect.
I'm grateful to be able to eat a good gado gado, not just boiled broccoli 😂
Yummy salad 🥗🤙🏾
Beautiful presentation. good energy. good job
Looove gado gado so much much
mostly Indonesian people love peanut sauce made using cobek and ulekan more than made by food processor, it tastes a lot better
Nice job Chef...👍.
Seemingly, you make a typical Betawi Gado-Gado. If Gado-Gado Surabaya usually has coconut milk in the peanut sauce. It gives a different taste in the sauce.
Gado2 premium dong. Looks tasty and healthier
Great r3cipe and video. Enjoy your style! This has all my favorite ingredients. P.S. couldn’t find your cookbook on Amazon?
😁😁😁😁😍😍Hello!
I am a Korean RUclipsr from Korea!
I'm your fan!
Thank you for today!👍👍💕💕💕🇰🇷🇰🇷🇰🇷
Gado Gado my Go To Salad Dish when I've lived in Jakarta late 90s
I've never seen such a beautiful pan! 😍
You can also add fried red onion as topping. This fried red onion topping is also "Indonesian thing". Lots of Indonesian dishes have fried red onion topping on them like gado-gado, fried rice, sate, bakso, soto etc.
saya suka satay sauce juga.. sedap tu😋😋
Sering bikin gado-gado ya?
Just switch peanut with cashew (or mix them both). You'll get much better dressing 😉
The ultimate part of this Gado-gado is the peanut sauce. If you change the peanut with other nuts, it wouldn't be Gado-gado anymore.
@@sakukuratabinbohkekal-faki4248 have you ever heard of gado gado boplo? they already used cashew since the 70s. just google gado gado mete/mede please
@@sakukuratabinbohkekal-faki4248 you gotta kidding me lad. 🤣
@@sakukuratabinbohkekal-faki4248 some of the most famous Gado-gado stall in Jakarta use cashew tho, or mix of cashew-peanut
Ow shoot now im craving some tahu campur 🤤
Me as " jawa " seeing gado gado....with brokoli....without tempe and cabage belike.....😲😲😲, this is new
she used the tempe btw....
Mouth watering just by watching it 😋
Making peanut sauce using ulekan definitely taste better than using food processor
I'm a simple Indo. I see Indo content, I press like.
Love the colors. +1 for the sauce
She is kickass. Awesome video
Tapi lho bu lara, aku belom pernah makan gado gado pake brokoli seumur hidup aku. Ketok e menarik perlu di coba
But in Indonesia i like spicy gado gado with sambal ... Hmmmmm so yummy cus make me sweaty.
Yum 😋
Gado gado approved, i know maybe its hard to find ingredient to cook proper gado gado in Indonesian ways. And its really really recommended to grind your peanuts by hand cause it will give you amazing crunchy texture to your sauce
Lovely mom and the cooking
Healthy ☀️
As an Indonesian my thought is..
"That is the most high class Gado-gado ive ever seen"...
I mean .. most of them is just some blench cassava leaf, tempe, and blench cabage.. i hope i could have those 😍
ikr...that's restaurant grade gado-gado
You know cassava leaf can be some high class vegetable outside Indonesia. Cause that's so rare.
wait the minute, your gado-gado had cassava leaves? thats new
@@koriharyono5238 yeah that's so new for me
Looks yummy
That wok !🤩
Great
PLEASE TELL US WHERE THE WOK IS FROM😍😍😍 super gorgeous and has a really nostalgic feel of indonesian style tableware.
Add some cubed glutinous rice too. Omg enaaaaaaaaak.
Biasanya klo ada layar tancep ,dulu tetangga suka jualan gado gado ,sumpah rasanya enak banget 😘
one of Most Tastiest Cuisine in the world more Tangezm than Caviar sorry all fans
Weh favoritku iki, gado2 & lotek mantapss
There is no garlic in original gado-gado peanut sauce, if u put garlic in it its called ketoprak peanut sauce
I'll choose fried tofu over tempe in my gado gado..
Be careful chef your hair fully fall over my gado gado😊 good job❤
Looks great! Thanks for the recipe 🙂
That looks good..
But I'd put the crackers last (after mixing the peanut sauce) because it'll get soggy if it gets mixed with the sauce and no longer crispy. But some people maybe prefer it that way, so enjoy it however you like 👌
Yummy

I need another gado-gado like this made by chef Lara Lee. It looked more healthier ;)
Wow, it looks so amazing, yummy 😋
That's my favorite 😍
Miss Lee, your fried peanut was too over cook. It will be a little bit bitter.
Gado - gado itu bisa dimakan kapan aja. sarapan bisa, makan siang bisa, makan malam bisa. pada dasarnya makanan indonesia itu bisa dimakan kapan aja
Me an indonesian : ate this for lunch today
Me to this video : 🇮🇩👁️👄👁️🇮🇩
Just ate it for the lunch, made by a 60 years old grandma that already making gado gado for 30 years, and she’s not using blender, she crashes it until the peanut getting soft. Try it traditional way, taste better.
