I am Indonesian living in North America and I'm so proud that Gado Gado is being featured on the Esselstyn's channel ❤ not only that but the guest also talked more about Indonesian culture and said Kecap Manis correctly 😉Thank you!! when my husband and I changed our lifestyle due to health back in 2016, we watched Forks Over Knives and purchased The Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Cookbook. Love the Esselstyn!
Thank you Esselstyn family for being like THE COOLEST PEOPLE EVER, and on top of that you're willing to champion a healthful dietary pattern AND share your learnings and passions with all of us! Love to ALL of you!
I started eating plant base because of your videos. I have been WFPB for 32 days now. And lost 15 pounds as well. I love your videos! Thank you so much. #cancersurvivor
Today I was able to watch your Indonesian Gato Gato dish. I learned so much it was amazing. And I made it. And loved it. I love your programming. I watch every recipe. And thank your dad/ husband. He saved my life I was actually diagnosed as terminal with heart disease with a 90% lower descending main artery or something like that. This was after five bypasses and two stents. I was able to reduce my blockage by 80% almost. I got my life back all because of his instructions in his book. My story is a bit longer but I’ll spare everyone and just simply say I got my life back and it’s been 15 years! Feeling great. Thanks.
Here I am as southern as you can get, everything fried and smothered, but I love you ladies! I absolutely Love veggies, I Love to watch yall cook with such passion, Ann cracks me up, I have a Channel whippoorwill Holler, I have mentioned your channel, and you would be surprised how many commented and said yes, I know those Ladies, I've been introducing meatless dishes on my channel lately, not sure how they would go over, but my viewers are grasping them, not just for health, but the cost of meat is so high, You never know who you will encourage, Thank you Ladies, Love you, From Mrs. Lori
Meat causes heart disease and diabetes. We are using half the planet to grow animals or food for animals. Agritortured animals have to stand in slaughterhouse trucks for 3 days with no food or water. Go vegan.
Ive watched your channel and my husband loves your orange cream dessert. You all are great people. My husband and I have to start eating healthier. You found a great youtube channel.
My family are okay with a vegan holiday meal as long as I also make a beef roast! And I did last year! The problem is real! I cannot afford all organic with my Sunday after church meals( kids and grands) - even when we are growing as much as we can grow! Food cost a lot of money!
Interesting take on gado-gado! I didn't know that they use tomatoes, both in the sauce and part of the veg, in the eastern part of Indonesia. I used to live in Jakarta, where gado-gado is originated from, with my mum. We often have gado-gado for lunch and my mum would use both dry roasted peanut and cashews, and instead of using kecap manis - she uses palm sugar to make the peanut sauce. For the veggies, we have steamed bean sprouts, cabbage, spinach, green beans, tofu, and lontong (tightly packed rice in banana leaves, then steamed) or boiled chopped potatoes. Great to see an Indonesian recipe here!
Jane, you say you're ignorance is blaring? We just love you out here in Minnesota! You have provided so much good information for my hubby and I and I am a cook and I cook plant-based totally, my husband is still a carnivore which I am working on! Don't ever apologize for not knowing, but apologize for not wanting to learn! That's what I always say! You and your mom have an awesome Ministry not to mention your dad! Thank you for all you do out there for people. Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN 😀
So wonderful to get to meet Vanessa! And how cool to not only get a wonderful recipe, but also all the background and history around it :D thank you so much, what a great show
This looks SO good! Please do have Vanessa back for her soup recipe...and maybe another Indonesian recipe and culture for fun! Love how you have connected with your neighbors over food. 🥰
Gado Gado. SO GOOD to know Indonesia shared the 'authentic dish at contest' with our lady warriors. I can't wait to try this! It might just become a favorite summer feast. ❤
I LOVE kekap manis. It's my go to type of soy sauce but has been hard to find for the past 2 years in my area so I appreciate the tip on how to make it!
This looks delicious and makes me think of my trip to Indonesia many years ago. I would love for Vanessa to come back and show us the turmeric based curry! Love your videos you Esselstyn women - you rock!
absolutely loved this video!!!! we are making this dish this weekend for my daughters 29th birthday party!!!!! love u guys!!! sending you love and light
This was fabulous! I've been to Indonesia twice. The beautiful people, their country, and their food have a special place in my heart. Vanessa's explanation of their intention, is fascinating. I love it, thank you!
I would recommended getting a morter and pestle. They are awesome to use in your kitchen. I use mine when I make Thai food. You can pick them up at Asian grocery stores.
The sound of food being ground in a mortar and pestle is so much more organic, traditional , evocative than the clamorous noise of the electrical blender. There’s also the bursts of aroma as the various items release their juices.
what a delightful video, thank you! Would you share where you got that gorgeous wooden bowl that holds the meal? internet search has not yet revealed anything close to that wonderful size, shape and color!
Yum,yum, yum! Great flavor combination and the " formula"! I am used to making Thai peanut sauce but this is more complex.I use Laura Scudders chunky peanut butter (about only one that is totally natural and widely available) as a cheat as I always have it in the house along with Tempeh and Firm tofu and lots of veg.I am in LA and we have tons of different Asian sauces, seasonings, condiments available, a lot of which I have.I just never thought of putting everything together like this.Excited to try!
You've been missing out, I grew up eating this! You can use that peanut sauce as a dip or grilled pork or chicken too, just adjust your meat seasonings accordingly. Thin the sauce and have it with mixed greens, steamed or raw. Possibilities are endless!
Sauce: 1 c peanuts 1/4 c cooked shallots 1-2 cloves garlic 1/4c chopped fresh tomato 1 mild green chili 2 tbsp fresh chives 2 tbsp kecap manis 3/4 c water 2 tbsp tamarind concentrate 1 tbsp fresh lime juice 🙏💚🥗
I'm so glad that you've had this experience. It is fun to observe and taste the ways that different portions of the same country or the same region interpret a food that is otherwise thought to be ubiquitous. What differences did you notice?
What is the name of the ingredient you squeezed out of the bag? I couldn’t understand what you said. It looks yummy. I am so thankful for these videos.
@@inksslinks319 @Louise Jacobs : That's right! It was tamarind concentrate. You could use tamarind chutney or tamarind paste. Most grocery stores carry at least one of those options. I would recommend just experimenting a little bit.
Just a quick question...as we're trying to get children involved in eating with us and they aren't always into too hot and spicy, could you say roughly how much chilli you'd add .... TIA....P.S LOVE your channel! :)
We often make two separate sauces simply by making it up without the chillies then reserve half of that. Add chillies to the remaining half and blend again.
With the plague of germs that are thriving around these days, I prefer using a fork. For those using their fingers, a small bowl of water to wash their fingers and a napkin would be ideal. I am not an Indonesian!
Hi Carole, that bowl was a wedding present from my grandmother years ago. I'm afraid I don't know where to tell you to find one. I'm happy to hear that you liked it. Thanks for watching.
I has a very hard time watching this video. The speaker was talking too slow and I had a hard time concentrating-sorry this is just my feed back. I think it may have been better with Jane and Ann taking over.

Yes please bring her back for the soup recipe! This looks so delicious… I’m excited to make it with friends!
Wow!! I have to try this!!! And I want to take a class on Indonesia culture from your wonderful neighbor/friend!
Gado Gado was my favorite dish when I visited Indonesia decades ago. I'm inspired to make it again, plant-based!
As indonesian there is a type of food in indonesia that is not usually eat with barehand, the soup and the food that mixed with peanut sauce.

So special!! I hope you do more like this
"A person's true identity is revealed through their peanut sauce." 😂 That really cracks me up.
It’s so true.I married into an Indonesian family. Also a test of a good wife is how competent she is with a mortar and pestle.
Looks delicious! Thanks for sharing!👍
Howdy neighbors! This looks awesome! Definitely going to have to try it.
I'll make you a batch, Ted.
I'm hungry, wish I could come on over!! Looks so yummy!

Oh yum sounds wonderful. I want to try this and bring it to my families next get together ❤ Wendy🌺🇺🇸🐞🦋

What a wonderful presentation, I make a similar vegan dish

Wow very nice
good job mom!
I will substitute pepitas and sunflower seeds for the nuts.
Are the peanuts raw, or roasted?
Dry roasted!❤️👍

Just love this video but I have Oral Lichen Planus and my poor mouth cannot tolerate citrus or chilli....... what can I use instead?
You can just take both out. Make a sauce that works for you!
How is this made in Indonesia? I doubt many have food processors. Do they do all the mixing in mortar and pestles?

I've used both. Adjust to make it yours!

Hi Carole, that bowl was a wedding present from my grandmother years ago. I'm afraid I don't know where to tell you to find one. I'm happy to hear that you liked it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much for your response and for the wonderful Gado Gado recipe. I’ll be trying it soon!
Delightful video
I’m just looking for coupons to use at Whole Foods or sprouts! Organic food & produce coupons? !
🤗
Can I use PB2 for a fatfree peanut butter.....we have to follow DrE!
My maws Shortbread was great... but my Grannies was best!! lol.... (Edinburgh, Scotland)
about the peanuts - were they raw or roasted?
The peanuts were dry roasted. If you have raw you could just pop them in the oven for a bit. Good luck!
How much peanuts, onions and tomato did you add?
Just trying to get an idea of proportions to make this 😀
1 cup dry roast peanuts, 1/4 cup sauteed onions, about a 1/2 c tomato (but I usually end up adding more).
@@vanessahildebrand90 Thank you so much! What a gem to find this recipe with no oil :-)

Depends on if you eat a plant perfect or plant strong diet.
So- it is a veg platter with peanut sauce 🤪
I would love to make this, but peanuts are a trigger food for me. I am really bummed.
try it with sunflower or sesame seeds
