As a white kid growing up in a black neighborhood, and we all watching this show faithfully, I can remember all of us tucking our top lip in and doing the fire Marshall bill, " let me show ya something!" Or a, " homey don't play that!" It was a better time. Thanks for the doc . You're really good at it
The decline and ultimate demise of In Living Color is a clear example of how a network politics could gradually take away a show creator and writer's creativity to the point where the show creator doesn't even recognize their own show. This happens even to this day. I'm actually happy that streaming platforms (i.e. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Tubi, etc.) is surpassing networks and cable.
I stopped watching Fox after I think it was 97. They killed so many good shows in the first season I got tired of bothering with them and they killed off shows of color as spoken about on here. Rupert Murdoch is a cancer in the universe. Sadly Streaming has been hurting writers and creativity. The Writers Strike outed a lot of bs that has been going on with shows and everything makes sense as to why some shows struggle that have interesting or unique ideas on streaming.
FOX and WB used black shows and black audiences to up their rating just to get rid of those shows when they gained exposure. Happens all the time in entertainment-music, movies and TV. 🙄
I just came across your first In Living Color Doc. And I was blown away, this show was what brought my wacky family together one night a week to watch something together. And hearing all the details that made this show possible, I'm even more a fan. Subscribed and keep them coming!
Such an incredibly talented family. What they were able to accomplish may never be repeated. They challenged the norm and blazed their own trail. You gotta salute them 🫡
Wow, just hearing that In Living Color music gives me goosebumps. Takes me back to the early 90s on Sunday nights. Speaking of which, you said In Living Color was originally on Saturday nights? I always remembered it being on Sundays at 8:00 but I could be wrong.
The SuperBowl halftime incident is really a huge moment in Black American history. The fact that a show created and spearheaded by Black people was so great and caused such an upset in ratings that they had to call another Black man, Michael fucking Jackson, to make sure that didn’t happen the following year is absolutely INSANE
Stopping by to say that I really enjoying your video essays! I saw you haven’t posted in a while but I’m hoping to seeing more content. Have a blessed rest of the year 🙏🏾!
Nepotism or not they all earned thereslives an applause from me They are all phenomenally talented in there own way There contribution to society at large was accurate, honest and hestericle AF💯🤩💖🗽🙏
I had to sub....i love a good retrospective, and i really appreciate the effort. You remind us all of a much better time in the world...and show the youngins that they missed the best era ever (80s/90s)
Okay so J Lo got the special treatment I 👀. Now she tries to totally disassociate herself from Black people, and Keenan gave her her start...interesting
It’s the same thing with Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek, Sofia Vergara, etc. They basically used Black peoples support to get on, then completely dissociate and alienate themselves. In many cases they start hating, and making crazy statements
I think it’s amazing that you don’t use pics if not 100% sure if they’re accurate. I also appreciate that you let us know. Vs someone that uses a “maybe” pic and in teeny tiny print you write that it MAY NOT be accurate and of course, some creators wouldn’t even mention that it’s a maybe pic. Integrity is so very important when doing documentaries, video essays, etc. Too often too many people are willing to give up “a little bit of integrity” (No Such Thing! It’s either there or not PERIOD, imo!) for money, attention, power, whatever. I grew up watching this show. I’ve seen some people discuss different bits or people from the show. But never anything so in depth from Wayans fam beginnings, how they got the show, the death of the show, and the aftermath. The Everything! In moments where you discuss when things are going wrong, being hurtful & harmful, people are making bad decisions or doing things that may be considered selfish, disrespectful, simply put just wrong in someway, you’ve addressed the issue with truth and you include what affect that negative whatever created, whether something bad came from it or it was abled to be used for positivity & growth. You don’t just totally gloss over or completely ignore what happened. It’s obvious that this is a passion of yours. The amount of research, the way the script is written, the clips you chose to include has all come together to make something very detailed oriented that’s pact with info making this educational, interesting, and enjoyable.
JFS This was a fantastic documentary. The best and most in-depth on the Wayans family, the upstart and advent of FOX and the WB networks. I worked in broadcast television for 20 years and this is definitely a very professional project you created. It shows how much you put your heart and soul inti your work. I wish you continued success. God bless you.
This is one of the best documentaries i have ever seen. I love the time and effort you put in each episode. I also love how you were completely honest. If you didn't have a pic or the right to show it, you let us know. It was straight to the point yet very informative!!!! Very well done!!!!!!! Thank you!!!
The 5ive Heartbeats didn’t do well at first because the production company didn’t believe in it. They didn’t promote it to the right demographic. I remember it seemed to fall out the sky but years later the truth was shared by people who were part of the production. Robert Townsend was a great asset in media because he understood black representation
Shortly after In Living Color was cancelled, a new series called House of Buggin filled In Living Color's time slot. House of Buggin was similar to In Living Color, except it had an all Latino cast.
I enjoyed all of those shows and the entertaining programming on Fox in the 1990s. I really didn’t watch much news on any stations that much when I was younger. In 2001, I got an apartment right above my mothers one bedroom apartment so I could take care of her yet enjoy privacy which she really liked as well. We truly enjoyed each other very much and I was so glad to have 5.5 years of focused attention on her… She had six kids. One day, I sat down with her to watch the news, and she had fox on… Reporter was making right wing commentary when they are supposed to only cover the news. As soon as I heard it, I told my mom not to watch that station for news ever. She listen to me and I am grateful she never fell into the Fox lying cycle, which has caused this nation so much harm. I am so glad to have enjoyed my mom, and we laughed all the time as I helped her get around, take her to doctors appointments, and helped her in every aspect of her life, as she was injured severely in a car accident, and was limited to using a walker to get around.
I remember thinking they did Tommy Davidson wrong when I read his book a while back. I agree they singled him out so the family could shine but I guess thats just showbiz. He also said that some of the Wayne's brothers humor seemed mean-spirited and just crass. Looking back at some of the episodes I kind of agree. A lot of their humor afterwards seemed to cater to white teenage boys i.e. Scary Movie, Don't Be Menace, etc. I really didn't care for any of those but there still were a lot of genius sketches and characters on the first seasons of ILC. Great video series...
I remember being 11, watching In Living Color with my little portable tv hidden under my blankets when i was supposed to be asleep. Loved that show, they were the best.
Nothing I read got specific about the "miscommunications" unfortunately, but I think it was more along the lines of scheduling conflicts. Leguizamo actually had his own sketch show after ILC was cancelled (House of Buggin).
Despite low morale and slumping ratings, most people around the show assumed In Living Color would be renewed for a sixth season (1994-1995). As they approached that year, word came down that instead of 22 new ILC episodes, Fox was going to order 13. Even the 13-episode order was starting to look shaky. The producers just been waiting to find out what the budget was going to be for Season 6, "Then at the upfronts, they said at the last minute, 'Oh, we're not doing In Living Color.'""
It’s so interesting how jealous people get. 31:50 Finding out that even #Jim *thought he wasn’t being used enough* … when he was presumably #2 on the call sheet behind Damon… *It just seems like over the course of pt 1 & 2 you have said* “______ felt like they weren’t getting enough sketches.” Every single ensemble show has that I would assume. When Will Ferrell left there was a scramble for “his vacated time” … before him HARTMAN … before him EDDIE & CHEVY. No matter how great the show, people are likely wishing for more time. Keep up the good stuff, you are like a mind reader because i was wondering to myself if i remembered correctly that i saw tupac perform on in living color but you didnt mention him as a performing artist during the time you were talking about how the show started being intertwined with music
Hey, so Diddy is actually in the performance with Pac and Flava Flav as well. I don't think I got a good shot of his face, but he's there lol. I found that Tupac was in a sketch, but not that he performed. He was due to perform, but got into a fight backstage, so they had Heavy D perform in his place. I don't think I saw anything saying that Pac got to make up that performance though. Thanks for watching!

🎉Amen!🎉❤
So many talented stars. Crazy. Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Lopez, Jim Carrey all went on to big things.
I agree!
This is arguably the most detailed documentation of ILC that I have ever seen. Kudos on the research you must have done to make this a reality. 🏆
This is a great documentary. Keenan basically started the halftime show
This documentary brought back so many memories for me I miss it so much. Great job!!!

5 heart beats is a classic to me and my family... I didn't know Mr. WAYANS had anything to do with the writing
I had to stop this like 10 times to go back and watch the sketches again. Thanks for this. I loved in living color
This documentary is amazing, detailed, thorough. Thank you for going the extra mile.

This was very well done. Put together nicely and professionally. It was also entertaining. You should do more of this for other untold stories.
Didn't realise there were so many stars to come out of this show!
Your Part 1 was epic, I'm strapped in for part 2 and 3 now. well done!
