Ayyy, there I am! Thank you for reacting to it, and I'm glad you seemed to love this erratic cluster of a song as much as I did. It was definitely the drums that stole the show for me too; I don't think I could have ever expected this kind of a drumming from a game about jets and explosions but here it is lol. And yeah, the guitar borders on freestyle but I believe that was done for the characters. Rage is a brother and Scream is a sister that fight against you, and the song changes as you battle them too. If you kill the sister first, the composed guitar solo towards the end takes over the entire song while Rage calmly talks about killing you himself. If you kill him first, the drums take over the entire song and go completely off-tempo and insane while Scream just... well, screams and shouts her lungs out about how you killed her brother. Literally just two random characters, but their song and the dynamic is insane for no reason lol.
Yes! Such a great explanation for this song. Mimic is erratic and insane but so, so good.

Jesse described it perfectly in two words: "controlled chaos". As soon as you shoot down one of them, the chaos gets unleashed.

For context this is the theme of 2 misguided barely functional sociopath twins you fight cause they really want to be on the hero list.
It doesn't end well for them.
And the song changes depending on who you kill first, one makes it go wilder like a caffeine overdose and the other one makes the song break like it ran out of antidepressants.

The song actually has 3 parts that start dynamically on gameplay based on the stage of the bossfight. You just listened to the First Stage (MIMIC), the next two (RAGE + SCREAM) are progressively even more "chaotic" and tempo accelerated. A wild ride!

As I recall, the twins were rogue. Rather, they're mercenaries ostensibly belonging to General Resource (Ace Combat 3 fans twitch). They lacked a "side" as their singular focus was on killing Trigger to elevate themselves to legend, and basically everybody else either didn't get in their way out of fear and confusion (Trigger's allies) or because they simply shared the objective of killing Trigger (Trigger's enemies) rather than having any real support.

Ace Combat music never disappoints. Never played any of the games, and it doesn't seem like my genre of game (although maybe like the music it'd surprise me) but the music is amazing!
If youre unsure, id give "Project Wingman" a try. It is an Indie game that is a love letter to the AC franchise (especially Zero) that plays very similarly and is just 15 € on Steam.
Oh, and for Jesse:
Project Wingman also has a great OST. I especially recommend "Kings", "Presidia", "Peacekeeper I/II" and (imo the best one) "Showdown".
Can't wait for you to get into Project Wingman soundtrack - guys nailed the Ace Combat series vibe in every way. Could recommend to start with a main theme called "Calamity" or proceed to an epic final standoff with "Kings". Soundtracks of AC and PW are one of the major parts of their beauty as the music not only fits the context, it expands it (while most of the developers these days treats music just like an optional background). There is even a track "Showdown" that was clearly made as a tribute to an early AC tracks like "Fire youngman" and "Warning line" from AC2.
Mimic theme is for two twin fighter pilots called rage and scream and i believe if you kill scream and it switch to the rage version and the same thing happens with scream with the scream version

The organ and accordion are so good. Weirdly gives it a Peanuts feel to it which just adds to the chaos

I have seen a bunch of ace combat recomendations in the comments and i might recomend another two more songs, that being Sol squadron (a 1v6 fight against veteran ace pilots) and Anchorhead raid.
Also if i remember correctly one of the composers of the game really likes jazz and this song was supposed to be inspired by jazz.

The drummer who worked on the Ace Combat 7 soundtrack is Yuya Maeta and the bassist is Naoki Kobayashi. I am not sure if they worked on this specific track as this is a little different as it is from a DLC which had a different composer from the main OST but I am very confident that they did and so they should be recognised for their amazing work.
I think the reason that the song has a constant BPM but somehow feels faster than it is, it's probably because the drums are on double time from the beginning, so basically, the drums were always playing eighths instead of quarter notes, therefore when they return to regular time (quarters) during the breaks you feel the song itself has gotten slower.

This is so weird lol, I was just listening to Plini the other day and thought, this would suit a gran turismo track or a AC game FOR SURE . That Chad playing bass on this track sounds amazing but also, every instrument has the chance to shine by itself and the mix benefits all . Loved the hi hat and I can tell it's a jazz bass being played with a pick ... You can't go wrong hahaha 🎧🎧🎧🎧
I love that this song sneaks in some elements from "the old times" in Namco, with the synth piano (I think? Not an instrument expert) playing those little leading tones at around 2:16 and the two note moves in the half-time section being very reminiscent of the PS1 era of game soundtracks. It is just my nostalgia speaking so I don't have concrete examples, but I feel like I heard similar elements in Ace Combat 2 and maybe even the Ridge Racer titles.

This one became a instant favourite of this channel, I would have never heard this if not of your channel. The technicality of this song is amazing from the drums to the bass. But the drums really steal the show on this one. It really ends to soon.

Kobayashi did not compose those tracks. All Mimic tracks (Enchanter 1/2, Mimic) were composed by Mitsuhiro Kitadani.

These theme is from a DLC boss fight in Ace Combat 7. Featuring a team of two, a brother and sister. These two sre...essentially broken people being made to fight in a war. Both were shoot down.
listening back to these tracks has been so much fun as someone who never even rly knew about ace combat outside of pop culture osmosis. i had to go find the character specific versions that other commenters mentioned and scream's version in particular is like 6 straight minutes of eargasm. oh my god

Arcade Riding high is personally a favorite of mine.
I remember you asking for songs people think are bad. I think that it's really hard to find in modern games because of the high production, but I can remember back in PS2 gen it seemed like everybody hated the Evergrace soundtrack. The composer isn't bad by any means, he worked on the Tenchu series afterwards and they had amazing soundtracks. But I believe he put the soundtrack together with the idea of it being plucked from another world or a culture you've never heard of. It's marmite and some of them get stuck in your head. A suggestion is "I Saw It In A Circle".

This music was for engaging versus one of mid-boss, is very tricky. even the drum beat of the music is very tricky so I couldn't sustain my pace during combat. I can sure it is intended.

Additionally, what the drummer do is very hard because he alternates the drive of hihat/ride in 1/8 - 1/16 - 1/32 while maintaining the tempo, not to mention the syncopes... Crazy

Ace Combat 4 had my favorite music. Rex Tremendae + Agnus Dei is incredible, but the regular stage tracks are great as well. Shattered Skies might've been my favorite but they were all good. The opening track and the credits too. Love that game so much!
