In our fourth video on Doomed Romance in movies, we take a look at Bob and Charlotte's relationship. Our past videos examined couples that broke up because of internal reasons but this one is because of external ones. Bob and Charlotte's romance is only meant to be a beautiful but momentary one.

Sometimes an emotional affair is more intimate than a physical one. The two characters in this wonderful film share a need that goes beyond a sexual need. That's why this film is so affecting. Utterly moving and a modern masterpiece.

If you think about, Bob and Charlotte did share a bed. Funnily, Lost in Translation shows Bob and Charlotte's bed scene where they just talk to each other. Yet they skip the scene where Bob slept with the bar singer. Kinds telling which one is more intimate

I always thought part of the point of this movie was to show that being understood is something only happens in fleeting moments. Sometimes when traveling alone, we're allowed to be somebody else with the people we meet, and sometimes we're allowed to be who we truly are, and say things we'd never say in our 'real' lives.
Under those conditions of absolute honesty, then intimacy can be built in a very short time.

    • @LLyrification
      @LLyrification 4 года назад +14

i disagree... Your truth changes depending on perspective; meaning that what the other person thinks as valuble and true is different to yours. You are not just losing some meaning on the language barrier but also on the actual meaning of the words and actions themselves, for you value different things as an individual compared to others. That is why people with the same interest and hobbies often times become more intimate. Sadly due to the level of difference in their commitment to their values and worldview it could potentially cause them to fall apart. Or optimistically grow closer to each other.

being understood is something that only happens in fleeting moments - watched this movie tens of times, and as someone quite connected to the concept of being understood, I never thought of it from that pow, I will be spending more time on the idea. Such a movie this is, it is so rich that there is always something new to grasp or seize, every single time. One special piece of art.

swantonist I’ve shared this with someone once... I wish it wasn’t a far off distant memory now, one that comes back to me all too often, paining me, the pings of what I should have tried harder to keep, what I should have tried to evolve, what I failed to say out loud... the painful reminder of the brevity of things in life, the short term we share connections... my ultimate failure to seize something - something wholly unique and something I will never get another chance to... or maybe something that still will occur, it’s been a while since I last talked to them though, and it doesn’t seem like they are willing to anymore. In the end though, what I really truly learned from this experience is that: it doesn’t matter, it’s not the end of the world, and it’s not important what’s going to happen, only that it did. There are plenty more beautiful wonderful things and people to experience, and they will come along in time, I have no doubt, so for now I must enjoy this time in my life, this time where I feel desolate and alone, because I also feel free and Unbinded to anyone or anything, I belong solely to myself... and that is a thing which is just as fleeting and valuable.

this movie still haunts me. I remember seeing this so many years ago. It breaks your heart without even trying. No heavy drama, no overly acted scenes. it's the small things in this movie that are so powerful. We know these guys aren't going to end up together but somehow that is not important. Like this analysis says its the temporary aspect of their time together. These are the kind of characters that exist in real life. I guarantee this situation has happened between two people many times. I think it ultimately reminds me of the the temporality of all things. This kind of person if you ever met you would never forget about... you would think about finding them again but probably ultimately wouldn't try to.... when Scarlett's character says that line "Let's never come back here again b/c it won't be as fun" I think she is literally speaking about life itself in that to live once is what makes life vital and exciting...not to "do it over again someday" This movie is a low key masterpiece.

What I found interesting is how they chose Japan as the setting. Just like the cherry blossoms, one of the defining features of Japan, the relationship between the two leads are ephemeral and beautiful, with the transient nature of the relationship only serving to highlight its beauty, just like how cherry blossoms also flower and die in a short season. I think that another way of reading the movie is that everything in life is seasonal, as is the characters' indecision and stuckness in life (winter) but this then gives way to rejuvenation and growth (spring) upon meeting each other. Each season cannot last forever, but in the short window of their blooming time, they create something beautiful and worthy in their relationship.

So many romance films fall flat because they focus on what the couple wants. It's centered around passionate gestures and incindiary, impulse-driven spurs of the moment. A radio above the head, a passionate kiss in the rain, and storming into a wedding at the last moment to stop the bride-to-be from marrying the wrong man. But Lost in Translation doesn't focus on what each other wants: it focuses on what each other *needs.* And what our two characters need, above all else, is companionship. It's absolutely a love story, and you might even be able to walk away with the impression that it's a "romance," but I think the relationship of our two characters defies such a simple categorization.
They're not "in love" with one another so much for what they can provide sexually, or as a means of pleasure to one another; rather, their love is thoroughly grounded in finding the beauty of another's soul. It's the warmth of finding a kindred spirit in a cold sea of strangers. Bob and Charlotte are lighthouses for one another.
Forever one of my favorite films and an exemplary depiction of love in its most serene, pure, and spiritual form.

A doomed romance comes at times when we are open and vulnerable, when we don't know what to expect from a situation. That makes it clearer to realize what we need and want from a new person. Somehow it is easier to find connection when you don't have to attach expectations of a future together, so you just enjoy the moment to its fullest.

Beautiful insights and interpretation. So true how 'doomed' romances can be necessary pieces of the puzzle in our emotional / psychological lives. Not everything has to consolidate into a formal relationship or end in 'together forever' to have been deeply transformational and a vital part of our emotional experiences. It has taken me a long time to recognize how important it is to give yourself to the moment and the intimacy of the connection, even if you know it cannot be sustained. There are many inner processes and emotions that can be mobilized and unlocked in allowing such a vulnerability. And it is also a way to honor life in the present moment, knowing such moments can never come back, regardless of the outcome.

It also resonates with me hugely as this is similar to how my wife and I met. We knew of each other prior but met randomly during Sonisphere festival in the UK. We didn't know either of us were going and the very first day, early afternoon we bumped into each other at the bar (a festival with roughly 100,000 people and dozens of bars). We spent the whole festival together and just hit it off; we had the absolute best time but couldn't take it further as we were both in unhappy relationships and at different times in our lives. 4 years later we reconnected on Tinder. I had not long broken up with the relationship I was in during the festival and i came across my wife about 2 minutes into my first session on the app, swiped right and we went on our first date a few days later. We are now happily married with 2 children.
That festival was my Lost in Translation...

This movie always hits home with me because I met a female friend whilst traveling in Europe who became a very special friend to me and shared a very strong bond with. Similar circumstances.. we both were in relationships… both of us were American in a foreign land, didn’t really speak the language well.. though we connected so strongly on an emotional plane . It was just that calm peaceful feeling that even without words exchanged, felt like we were so comfortable and comforted by each others company. It’s been 20+ years since our adventures together in Europe.. but I still think about her to this day. Not even a feeling of longing to be with her.. or to see her again, though it would be nice. But more of a feeling of gratitude that I met and was able to spend time with someone who taught me a lot about myself and my perspective on things in life. I think because of the things I learned from her.. I came out a better person and someone who is more at peace with himself and the way I view the world and treat others.

I didn't see this first time round. Didn't hear any reviews, it was off my radar and it's a movie I'd never have picked to watch back then anyway. I decided to watch it the other month because it was on a list of the top 100 movies of the last decade, and so I downloaded it. As a 40 year old guy, I think that - had my younger self watched this when it came out - I wouldn't have gotten everything from it that I did. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. What they managed to do on screen is very, very rare. And it raised my opinion of Scarlett by a few million miles, as an actress. An essential watch but, if you're young now, give it some time. Put it in your diary to watch when you're a grown up, settled into middle age and on the cusp of maturity, but not old enough to have forgotten what it was like to be young.

I also found the way their different kinds of frustration and loneliness were portrayed interesting.
To me it felt like he was always surrounded by too many people, it was too loud, too hysterical, too much. His loneliness came from being among too many people that he didn't connect with at all (see all the commercial scenes).
With her it felt the other way around. She was lonely because there was no one there. Her husband went off to work or turned his attention away from her, the person on the phone didn't care.
The scenes with the biggest contrast were the pool scenes to me. When he was in there, they had the aqua sports stuff, it was loud and busy.
When she was in there, it was night and quiet and she just dove into the silence.
They both come from completely different situations, stages in life and from different kinds of loneliness but the feeling and understanding is mutual.
Beautiful movie, thanks for your analysis and the insight on the Her parallels, that's amazing!

You just want to lay forever & be okay together. Not alone but the warmth of connection & cuddles and such. That scene where they’re in bed, & he comforts her & himself by feeling her foot. That feels a billion times more intimate & full of feeling than a sexual encounter.

The dubbed Spanish Latin version of the movie, when Bob whispers clearly you can hear: "quiero que sepas que jamás voy a olvidarme de todo esto, ¿de acuerdo?... Nunca te olvidare"... That translates to: "I want you to know that I will never forget all of this, ok?... I will never forget you".
Obviously this was incorrect based on the digitally processed original audio that says: "I have to be leaving... But, I won't let that come between us, ok?" That's Bill Murray saying it, not Bob, because that line was never on the script, so in my opinion the spanish version line sounds more realistic according to the character. I just can't imagine Bob in the future chasing Charlotte and cheating his wife. To me this was more like a 'never see you again goodbye' than a 'see you in the future goodbye'. A really accepted doomed romance from Bob.

I understand the meaning of both versions as exactly the same message. Bob has no way of contacting her once they say goodbye, so to me, saying "I will never forget you" and "I won't let that come between us", mean the same thing, ie, she's always going to be in his heart, no matter what, and nothing, nobody, and no physical distance can take that away from them.

Don't deconstruct this moment, don't probe, don't explore... just savor the mystery and relish how exquisitely transcendent this moment is. It is one of the greatest emotional climaxes in cinema history. Out of an astonishing depth of respect & compassion for the characters and their sad, rich relationship, Sofia actually gives them their PRIVACY for these their final words together. When I first saw this I was astonished, literally speechless, not only at the level of respect & compassion (for FICTIONAL characters!) but also how Sofia understands that NOT knowing what Bob whispered makes the film a hundred times richer than dialogue could convey, for - as Einstein said - "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious". Brilliantly prepped, and brilliantly conveyed, a transcendence like this is rarely achieved in ANY medium... and thus is truly Art.

Really liked your review of the movie. As a sidenote that completely sidesteps the point of your review or the movie, I just wanted to say something about the concept of foreignness and how other countries and cultures can induce a sense of foreignness and isolation. Of course, if you don't know the language things are bound to create a wall between you and other people, but this is also a world where cultures meet, collaborate and intermingle in interesting ways. I love how the movie creates a wall between the characters and the outside world, but sometimes I wonder what if we didn't think that way. What if when we visit or live in other countries (or even when we conceptualize these countries in our minds) we only saw others as humans just like we see them in the countries that we live in or belong to. As someone who moved to Boston from Pakistan for two years, I felt this feeling of foreignness in quite a lot of interesting ways, and I always wonder if we could all handle it differently, that if we create less walls when we see (or engage with) other people who look different than us, then perhaps we would all be a little less lost in translation. Especially in a world like ours where we have countless opportunities to move beyond our own cultural languages and the somewhat isolated mindscapes that these languages create. Anyway, liked your review, this long comment was triggered by the somewhat isolationist tones induced by the review, and I felt like I had to write it down (at the risk of going completely tangential :D).

I didn't understand the message at the end of the movie, I felt it as it got lost in translation.

To answer your initial question, "would you enter a relationship knowing it's not going to last?", my answer would be "Yes, three times in fact."

learning from our experiences, about ourselfs, and being gratefull for them, and grateful to ourselfs for having the courage to reach out and connect trully with someone... That's what we get from a "doomed" romance

I didn't realise that for Spike Jonze's film "Her" and for Sophia Coppola's film "Lost in Translation", the main actress in both films is Scarlett Johanson. If Jonze and Coppola both got inspiration from their failed relationship for these films, it is a nice touch to know that ScarJo is portraying it both. As if she too is part of it.

This video saved my life. As I'm struggling to get by after a "doomed r" for some years.
So be it, sometimes you won't be able to stay with that.person, or.even keep their in your life as friends.
That's life, a quiet breath. Once it's gone, it's gone. As she says in the hotel room "never come here again, cause it won't be so much as fun."

Had I known more about the story, I would never have missed this movie when it came out . In March of 1989, I was in Tokyo shooting a TV commercial and met someone. It’s exactly as you describe. Suddenly there are two worlds operating simultaneously, Tokyo itself, and another world , also an island, with two
inhabitants. I don’t think either world was more “real” than the other, and the most striking difference between them was in the movement of time, which dramatically slowed when we were together.
I was aware that our time was “on the clock” but when we were together, I was at peace with time. Your video suggests this movie tells my story, and your insights into it are beautiful and accurate. Thanks

I remember having a deep depression after having a relationship with another while living in another country end. We met, flew to each other, and then without talking things ended. And then he found someone else the minute i returned home for good. The movie was so surreal. I never understood it at the time, but enjoyed watching it anyway. Mainly for its location: Tokyo.
Overtime, I took it as people experiencing life crises finding a connection. Right person, wrong time. Or othet things. It was a great gem Netflix recommended it on a happenstance.
On my last watch thru last year, I recall one of their last nights together watching Fellini's La Dolce Vita, specifically, the scene when Marcello and the movie stat waded into the fountain. The ethereal, dream like vibe of that scene emulated the whole film, especially when the dawn comes. Given La Dolce Vita is my favorite film, I understood immediately when i picked up on it.

Being in my early fifties now and viewing the film from a new perspective. Something has to be said about, being at an age where the experience of a spontaneous falling-in-love encounter and connection, will probably never happen again. The movie hits home more now than when I first saw it at age 31. Feeling the intense grief of an encounter that you've left in the past never to be repeated. Lost to time and circumstance.

This video makes me cry so much. I know exactly what this is ... I recently found a note I wrote to myself on December 14th 2014 explaining how sad I was and didn’t want to be here anymore and kill myself and start another life... at the end I wrote “I just need a bright new soul to come into my life” as fate would have it a week later someone came into my life that changed the course of it forever ♾ we were so wrapped up in each others love instantly..he saved me from the place I was at and showed me what it was like to truly live and be free. It didn’t last because of outer circumstances...We still keep in touch but he’s away at the moment. I will always love him for what he did for me. So if you ever read this Connor I love you more than you will ever know and thank you.

Great essay of a great movie. Only flaw is that this is opposite of a doomed romance. This was the perfect romance. I love how you allow us to linger on that smile of Bob's face as he walked away. What a great beat to end the video.
