Thank you Ruth Ann. My sister just passed and I helped my niece clean out her house. She had a crock pot that I think was from the 70s. My niece was going to donate it to a thrift store. I snagged it up and she said “what do you want that old thing for?”. I told her it will outlast the newer one I have now and (like you said) it won’t burn food. Plus I remember when they first came out 🥰. The older things work the best! I appreciate you - God bless you.
Agreed, I moved recently and my crock was broken when I unpacked. I had to toss it because that size crock is no longer made. My new one pales in comparison to my old one.
Sorry for your loss.
Planned obsolescence is such a plague on society, honestly. I wish you could buy anything, at any price, that would last anymore!
I am so sorry for your loss. ❤️❤️❤️🌹
@pattysmith4991 My Condolences on your Sister’s passing. May the Lord give your Family comfort during this time. Hugs & prayers, Anita3kids 🙏🏽💜🧶🦋🥰🌼
Well that explains why my newer crockpot cooks too hot on low! So frustrating!
Yes! Grrrr!!!
Mine gets way too hot. I cannot make spaghetti sauce or Chili in the, because it makes them taste burnt.
Exactly! I replaced a vintage crockpot this past year. So frustrating is an understatement. 'Low" is 200* temp! My vintage low was 165*
@@janicemartin1580 can you use a pressure cooker or instant pot? I utilized the crockpot and the pressure when I worked. My first crockpot was so good, this newer one is OK for Roasts, but no Chilli, or Spaghetti Sauce, it looks burned.
@@kathyrama4570 hmmm, interesting point. You certainly would not add the pressure regulator! I only have stove top pcs but I understand many of the electric ones do have a yogurt setting. Not sure what that temp is.
Thanks! Just a small token to say thank you for everything you teach. I have been ill for a very long time and your videos have really brightened my days and pushed me to get better so that I might try some of your delicious recipes and try canning! God Bless you and your family
God bless you for sharing these kind words. Praying right now that your healing would be faster than you expected
@nanacakes110 I hope you are feeling much better & are getting your strength back. When you are feeling up to par , I would love to hear what you ventured to make of Ruthann’s recipes or what you plan on canning. I’m hoping to make her sandwich bread as well as I have always wanted to can. Some day. I need to purchase a suitable canner & the jars/lids. Things are just so outrageously priced nowadays. Hope you are feeling better, Hugs & Prayers, Anita3kids in New Jersey 🧶💜🙏🏽🥰🌻
@@Anita3kidsS. You can start with just a big pot. Water bath. Some put a towel at the bottom. You already have both.
One set of canning glass,12, comes with lid and rings. Walmart used to have that for 11.97. Now, it is more, but still doable. Can tomatoes. Acidic foods in the water bath. Some peopel even can meat, using water bath, but that take's, at least 3 hours of simmering. Where there is a will, there is a way. lol.
Sending a prayer for you
Praying for your speedy recovery of health so you may experience your ventures.
That explains why, after my husband broke my old crock pot, my new one burns every recipe
Yay! We're not crazy! We talk about this often. We used to be able to start food in the morning and it would be done at supper time. Now, it's cooked to mush!
Agree!!!
Just like dog food! The Govt makes them cook it at 800degrees for 24 hrs. Its nothing but brown mush thats devoid of anything healty, just AGEs that cause cancer!
I have 5 crockpots of various sizes. All of them are "older" - and I won't get rid of any of them... especially for any of the newer ones. I've had to replace lids, and one cord, but they are good.
Well no wonder I don’t like crockpot meals. Hate the texture.
I love how real you are. No I don't cook from scratch for 400 people. You are very relatable. That's why I love you.
I love her too.
My down the street neighbors just moved and left free stuff on the sidewalk. My daughter went for a walk and came back with that same vintage crock with original lid!! So happy, hoping it works.
Ohhh beautiful
LOL my husband is listening in the background and asked, " Could you put it on a light timer on new models to turn on and off every 15 minutes??" 😄
You could use an inkbird style temp controller
Sure, most anything can be done, just costs MORE to make. Item, MORE EXPENSIVE......
"Oh yeah, it's Saturday morning, I get to add a little sunshine to my day--Ruth Ann put out a new video!"
😍😍😍
Not just the low setting- the warm setting is high too. In fact, I often set my new crockpots on warm to cook.
Truth
Me too! I hate my new crockpot because it burns everything.
That explains why things BURN on LOW!! I thought I just had a “lemon!”
This video came at a perfect time! I was trying to figure out what side to make for 40 people on Tuesday. Thank you!
Also thank you for being my Saturday morning coffee buddy! I literally make my coffee and watch you every Saturday morning. ❤❤
You are so welcome! And I love having coffee with you!!!
I grew up with that same model. I don't know what happened to my mom's but I remember her whole kitchen matched it lol
Lol
Yes, I miss my older crock pot. It died after over 30 YEARS of faithful cooking.
Look at a second hand store they show up all the time, or a garage sale!
Thank you, Ruthann, I enjoyed learning about the vintage crockpots and roasters. I was not brought up Mennonite, but I am not far removed from them on my mother side, so I love hearing all of your tidbits and history about the community. And even though I am no longer raising children, I love hearing your philosophy about raising them and their developmental stages. You are a very wise woman and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
One of my favorite cookbooks is from the Mennonite community in Scotland County, Missouri. Many of the ladies contributing recipes have since passed but the cookbook is still available there.
Honestly, the more I watch of your videos along with Jessica from Three Rivers Homestead, Becky at Acre Homestead, and Chelsea at Little Mountain Ranch, the more knowledge I'm gaining about what and how to substitute ingredients. I am becoming more confident and am actually making dishes that are edible 😄
That is awesome!
@loric3455 Another wonderful homestead you might enjoy is Little Village Homestead. Renea is a virtual encyclopedia with anything to do with the kitchen. She makes bread, cans, freezer meals, casseroles, etc. She also gardens and has a market stand that she keeps stocked with so many things she makes. She is a sweetheart and a very good teacher. 😊 ❤
Those are all my favourites too
Wow I was wondering why my stuff on low was always sticking in the crockpot !!! Very interesting!
I totally agree with you about the crockpot, that’s why I’ve always taken the crock out of the crockpot and started what I want in a low oven and when ready it goes into the crockpot, kinda tedious but it makes due…I’ve also and it works pretty good is put 2 layers of parchment paper on the bottom of the crockpot then your ingredients. Oh by the way…your missing medium size grater, have you looked in the boys play dough stuff area 😉….been known to happen, believe me 😂
Ohhhh great idea!!!
Several years ago I was prepping food for a family Christmas gatheting. All of a sudden sparks were flying and my old faithful died. It was a wedding gift in 1975 and lasted until around 2019. I still miss it.
Thank you for sharing this potato recipe...I found a Mennonite cookbook at the library & actually made these potatoes, cottage cheese & a friendship cake. They were fantastic...just wish I still had that book!!! 😊
Almost forgot to say how the mystery behind my crockpot burning edges of my BBQ pork roast has been solved. I used to cook over night with just onions & garlic but it would be dryer & over cooked. Who knew???
The USDA may have gone a little overboard to try and save people from food poisoning occurring when food is left at low temps for long enough for bacteria to grow to a dangerous level, BUT BE CAREFUL! I have a very clear memory of a local well-known chain restaurant that poisoned many because potatoes were held at a too-low temp! Do your research and know temps and times required for safe low-temp cooking! Thank you for the videos; I always learn something, and enjoy the videos very much.
Good morning Ms RuthAnne hope y'all are doing well. I don't know if you have seen any of the texts I have sent. Anyway, I luv all of your videos. I feel like you are a member of our family. I have finally seen all of your videos. I spend several hours with you every day. The best advice you have given to me is don't make several changes in my life, take 1 or 2 changes and master them then add a couple of changes and master them. This way I don't get overwhelmed which I tend to do often. So I watch your bread making videos over and over. Thank y'all for all of your videos. And for your tips and suggestions. You are a true teacher, friend and a wonderful Sister in Christ. God bless y'all. ❤️🥰🤗😇😉🤤😋🙏🙏🙏🙏
God bless you!!!! Thank you for taking the time to share!!!
Thank you for sharing your life and your kitchen. I'm so grateful for the traditional ways you share. Wishing I would've been more aware to learn my grandmothers skills.
Ruth Ann, my wife and I discovered your videos less than a week ago. We have spent 3 afternoons planted in front of the tv, watching your series, and we are both in love with your videos. You have got to be one of the most wise, pleasant, straight-talking people, on the internet! We live about an hour and 15 minutes away from you, in northeast Iowa. Keep up the wonderful work, with the videos, and raising children with morals. God Bless You and your family!!
Loved this video...not so much for the cheesy potatoes as for the "vintage" crockpot. I got that exact "crock watcher" brand for a housewarming gift back in 1977! That just made me smile and realize yet again that I am indeed vintage! One of my daughters always makes "funeral potatoes" when we have a family gathering...she bakes them in a 9 x 13 pan, though. Thanks for sharing another sweet video for your grateful fans! Always a bright spot on my Saturday mornings! Blessings, Marie
😍😍
We did them the same way but topped them with "crunched-up" "sour cream and onion" potato chips, and a scattering of grated cheese. Wow!
I thought it was just me! No! My Crockpot is the problem! I will be scouring for an older one. The one I received from my brother and his wife in 1985, when I got married died around 2000. It never burned anything. I've had at least 3 new ones since (one that got a broken handle right away!) and they all boil everything to death or scorch the food. It is so frustrating!
All of our weddings are done...for our children, that is. Our oldest grandchild is turning 18 this summer. So I expect grandchildren to start marrying in the next 5 to 15 years (if the Lord tarries!)
God bless you!!! And then great grandbabies!!!
I enjoy your video's so much My two children are both married and grown so now we cook for Grandchildren's weddings and I have to say so much fun, as a Grandma....
That sausage so reminds me of dinners at my Grandma's in PA. She lived in an Amish area so we have a lot of similar traditions. Always had it with egg which was a cross between a pancake and scrambled eggs. Served up with lots of butter and syrup or apple butter. Such good comfort food for dinner. Dessert was her canned peaches that I would help can. Such good memories.
Meatloaf, peas, carrots and cheesy potatoes (in the crockpot) for supper. Made my own cream of chicken soup for the first time. It’s delicious 😋
My mother in law had the same problem with her electric smoker. My husband made, essentially an extention cord with a dimmer switch on the end. That way she can restrict the amount of power to the smoker and lower its temperature.
Good to know our true Low setting is gone. My new roaster burns the sides so bad. I have to constantly stir it. My instant pot will burn on low also. Thank you for the information.
Thank you for the info on the crockpots and roasters and also the big potato recipe. I actually was most interested in the Pa. Style sausage. I didn't know what to ask for all these years. I'm 70 and my grandpa used to do all the butchering for the community when I was growing up. I just knew this sausage as salt and pepper so no one had any idea what it was. Now I have relocated and do not live far from PA I may have a little better luck finding something like I remember. Many thanks for that! I'm excited.
Yes this is very true. Many years ago I noticed my new slow cooker didn’t cook the same, I was frustrated and then years later discovered this fact.
I got food poisoning in the 1970s along with a youth group at church from sloppy joes made in a ‘vintage crock pot’. It took me decades to get over the fear of illness before I bought my first slow cooker a few years ago. You are correct that new ones cook hotter, but they are safer. Thanks for sharing.
For those who have a modern crockpot, I wonder if you could plug it into a timer so it cycles on and off. But I would also use one of those oven thermometers with a probe to make sure it stays in the safety zone. (I think some of them can send an alert to your phone.) The other thought I had was to put some sort of insulation between the heating element and the pot. I know people sometimes add water to the inside of their roasters. Just some ideas - has anyone tried something similar?
And thanks Ruth Ann! You always have wonderful tips.
NOW I KNOW WHY MY tried and true meatball recipe was scorching on low in my new slow cooker!
Someone told me that happens when the slow cooker has a hot spot because they need replacing and my response at the time was well I haven’t had this for very long! Now I know what the real reason was!!! Thanks for uncovering that for me RuthAnn! oh my goodness ya just never know what they are going to do to mess with our kitchen appliances next!!! I remember saying if it’s on low why is it bubbling and boiling as if it’s on high?! Now I know why! 🥰❤️🙏🏻🍁🇨🇦
I know it won’t work if you’re feeding for a crowd, but making them in a 9x13 pan in the oven keeps the potatoes from breaking down and getting “mashed” so much! Love these potatoes, I make them all the time!
Of my yes! I snatched up sn older crock pot and I am steadily looking for a older roaster at the thrift stores... for this very reason. Enjoyed the videos you put up, as always
That explanation on slow cookers makes sense. If I put something on low it always burns. Usually I will start it off at low or high for an hour and then turn my slow cooker down to warm. No more scorching.
I LIKE THE OLD ROASTERS AND SLOW COOKERS . NOW I KNOW WHY AND THANK YOU FOR THE RECIPIE FOR LARGE BATCH EVERYTIME I GO TO DO LARGE BATCH I HAVE TO SEARCH I USE TO HAVE MY MOM AND GRANDMAS HAND WRITTEN RECIPES FOR LARGE BATCH COOKING BUT I HAVNT FOUND THEM SINCE THIS LAST MOVE SO NOW I HAVE TO SEARCH RECIPIES OUT
You’re welcome.
Wow, explains why things still boil on just my WARM setting!
Right!!!
Yes, ma’am! I just found an 18qt Hamilton beach roaster at my local thrift store. I did get a few looks like “why the heck are you buying that ugly thing” 😂 in my heart, I knew it was a beautiful treasure I had just been blessed with. That roaster cooked my leg of lamb so perfectly and it kept it nice and warm until we were ready to serve. I almost ordered a new one but almost all of them had poor review on how fast they die after purchase. Not sure if it’s true but I am happy with mine. 😢 Thank you for sharing your research with us. ❤
I absolutely agree about the low setting on modern crockpots cooking too hot. I didn't know why, but thank you for letting us know! I'm going to go to goodwill and thrift stores to try and see if I can find a vintage one. I'm a single working mom and a true low setting can help to ensure that dinner is ready and not overcooked by the time we all get home. Last week, dinner was overcooked on low in my modern crockpot and I cooked a whopping 4lbs of pork loin for only 6 hours on low!
Yes!!!
RuthAnn, I am glad that you brought this up. I have a crockpot that you can change the size of the pot, 2qt., 4qt., and 6qt. sizes. I am always starting whichever size I use on low and then having to switch it to warm, because no matter what size I use, the low setting is just too hot.🥵😥
how did we ever survive without 50 different government agencies , doing our thinking for us ??? / sarc great videos , keep them coming please
I have a great tip for making quick seasoned green beans so all that has to be done is heat them up. Just simply pour Italian salad dressing over the beans, to taste, and cook until completely heated through, mixing occasionally. This is absolutely delicious and so easy to prepare for small or large groups. The least expensive brand of dressing works just as well as the more expensive brands.
My mom has a crock pot almost exactly like that and it is THE BEST. I have never loved any crock pot that I have gotten. I did get an old Westinghouse roaster from my grandma when she passed. It is probably from the 60's or 70's and it is amazing. I spent a lot of money to get it repaired instead of buying a new one because i knew nothing would compare!
I used to, when I worked away from home, put supper in the crockpot and it was perfect when I got home. Now everything cooks to mush. I’m glad to know it’s my new crockpot not me. I thought I was losing my cooking skills😂. I enjoy your videos, you have a lovely family.
Oh my word! Now I know why on low settings my food is done so quickly
To avoid burning food in modern roasters, put water in the pan under the pan for the potatoes. I put water in it when I cook apples down overnight, on low. It really helps!
Hello Ruth Ann, I'm a little late today. But any time of the day I watch your videos it makes my day better! ❤Patsy
I just want to thank you so much for sharing these recipes with us. It really means a lot to make stuff from scratch at home then to buy stuff that you don’t even know what they put in it. I hope you have a good day and God bless you and your family.
It soundslike a very caring, loving group of people, like a wedding should be. I grew up in the thumb of Michigan, where neighbor really cared sbout neighbor in the 50's. & 60's. People there still care sbout their neighbor, most of the same families are still there. I just turned 80 & some of the kidsI went to school with, (1 room school still operating as a schoo] 2024) kindergarden thru eighth grade
Ive been making these since 1990 in SoCal, had no idea they were Mennonite Wedding mased potatoes!
I could not understand why my newer crockpots kept ruining food, I thought I was doing something wrong. Thank you
I watch you here and follow you on Instagram. Even though our lives look very different, I just want to say how much I love your content and how much of an inspiration you are. Your authenticity is refreshing and your joyous spirit is infectious!
This explains why I have a keep warm, low and high on my crockpot and the keep warm is hotter than the low on the newer one. I also have an old time crockpot and prefer to use it over my newer one because like you say, it cooks better, it has a low and a high setting only. I was gifted a new roaster and it went out within just a few uses and I found that I really liked it for canning. I did purchase another one from a thrift store to get an older model and I love it even more than the one that I had been given. They built things to last in longer in the 70 and 80's in my opinion. Things seem more disposable and cheap these days.
I agree.
Hmmm 🤔. My newer crockpot has a "warm " setting. I'm going to need to fill it with water and take its temp after several hours to see what exactly might happen with that setting.
God bless Ruth! Such a calm and encouraging voice 😊
Another great video! We attended two Amish weddings this past fall and to me the most interesting part is watching the women prepare the food! They certainly have it down to an art and it runs so smoothly, and of course it is all delicious! I learned a lot about the new temperature variations and will keep them in mind. Thanks so much and have a great week.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I recently bought a vintage crockpot @Salvation Army and you couldn't be more correct on the TRUE LOW. I've used it twice & it made the most perfect cheesy potatoes!❤ No more burning around the edges!
So many things to comment on in this video!! Those cheese potatoes look delicious. I really like the shovel for breaking ice. I live in California so I don’t have that problem. And finally the USDA has been regulating everything for to long I suppose that don’t think we know how to cook. 🤷♀️ thank you for the great video again. I so look forward to seeing them.
Never noticed the music. Thank you for another wonderful video. I really enjoy Ruthann’s videos. I have learned so much and appreciate that she shares her time & knowledge. I love cookbooks and I really love older cookbooks. God is good❤
Hi RuthAnn and sweet family! I know the newer crockpots are hotter and I don’t like them either. Your cheesy potatoes look delicious.
I hope you and your family have a blessed weekend!
Thank you for always researching for ways to solve common problems. I would have never thought to research that I just knew I couldn’t really leave my food unattended.
Ok. This solves a mystery I have been pondering for years lol. My older cookers are perfect for on low. The new ones, they actually simmer on low and I don’t want that. Thank you for this knowledge!
Oh, how I'd love to get my hands on that cookbook!!
So true about the vintage crockpots and roasters. I am always on the lookout for them.
I gave my new crockpot to goodwill because it was too hot! Now I use my covered roasting pan in the oven to “slow cook”
Hi Ruth! My 52 yo Dazey LG Crock pot goes from Simmer--Auto Fry!! Over 500° Thanks for the tip. I'll leave notes in my roaster, electric fryer & crock pot for my son to DO NOT DONATE, & why. He loves to cook, & cooks for his family. She doesn't cook. Love this vid BTW. God bless you all and many prayers 🙏🏻 ❤️ Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister 🙏🏻 ❤️
Thank you for sharing this about modern vs older crock pots not having no true low!!! Like them messing with temperatures on dishwashers no longer getting to sterilizing temperatures like they did in my earlier years.
Thank you for the tip about the older Crockpots cooking at lower temperatures. I just bought an avocado green 70’s model so my old crockpot recipes will turn out like they used to.
I get so excited to see you have a new video out. I love learning about the Mennonite community. My grandmother was Pennsylvania Dutch.
Every Saturday morning!!!
I have one from 1976! I have a roaster from the same era! Will keep them forever!( And put them in my will!)
Thank you for all your help I shared it with my daughter and granddaughter who is into making her own butter and yogurt and other things love watching you and your family and farm animals ❤❤ keep up all you so may God bless you and family the wedding looked beautiful and fun
You are so welcome!
I'm like you with modern roasters. I work in food service, and the "HEALTH" Inspectors tell us the food has to stay at a temperature between 145°-165° in order for it to NOT grow bacteria. I know my modern crackpot or "SLOW" cooker, as we call it, gets well hotter than that, because I have tempt it, it gets very frustrating, especially when I put a roast or anything in the roaster, crackpot so I don't have to be right on top of it...thank you for all you share with us.
Government even telling us how to cook. Smh.
Its been many years since i did my apprenticeship as a chef, but if memory serves, we had to maintain a temp of at least 64°C for all hot food.
Oh that cream of chicken soup looked way too easy! No odd ingredients! Thank you.
You are such a precious gift! Thank you for making videos 😊
Thank you for answering why my newer crockpot always seems to burn or cook my food faster. I never knew this and gave away my older one, oh well. Thank you for all the informative videos, blessings to you!
I used to have a crock pot from the 70s just like the one you have. One of my prized possessions is my mother’s old electric skillet. It is cast iron and heavy duty and works like a charm. My husband replaced the plug on it and I have used it the last 32 years. I wish you could still get them made that well!
Thank you for confirming this! I always wondered why my slow cooker cooks fast, thinking it was just the model, which is a Hamilton Beach. The one I have was purchased around the mid 90's, based on the one you've shown that looks to be a late 60's to mid 70's model.
Loving the recipes for the cream soups! You know the settings difference is so true, I have the older ones.
Thank you so much for the time and attention you put into your videos. My wife and I really enjoy them and look forward to your new videos. We are both so envious of your lifestyle and knowledge.
Thank you again from Tennessee
Re: missing grater
Pull all your drawers completely out.... that's where I've found my MIA items...next peep between stove & cabinet, fridge & cabinet/stove, etc 🥰🙏 good luck
Good morning Ruth Ann, have a wonderful day, love your videos!!!
👋 from Ohio 😊
You are a wealth of information!! It is such a wonderful blessing that you pass this information down. So much of this is lost over generations. I hope your children are creating a video library for their children.
Great info about the Crock pots! Had no idea! Now I'm gonna go hunting for an older one😎
Oh my goodness I never thought about the difference between the new versus old crockpot and roasters. Vintage is almost always better and the items last longer too. Now I know why my my new crockpot gets too hot. 🤨
That explains why air fryers dont have a mild low temperature option. My new stove is the same; impossible to achieve a true holding temperature, or dehydration
I gave my daughter my first crockpot when she went off to college. Shesin her late 30s now. I asked her not to get rid of it if she hasn't already. Shes in the Army now. Fingers crossed. I make funeral potatoes too. The kids love it. I haven't made it in a long time. Thank you!!
Plant dropping😂 moment was funny😂
Incredible how recipes travel! This is found at pretty much every Mormon funeral in Utah.
🤣🤣
I had a lot of old crockpots and one day I came home from work and my husband threw out ‘those old things,’
I really look forward to your weekly videos, potatoes look delicious!
There are three cookbooks on Amerzon (U.K.) one called hope Mennonite cookbook plus two others. Cheese and potatoes sounds good. Yum. 😊😊
Those big 22 quart roasters, you can take the liner out, add water then have the potatoes in the liner, it's more like a double boiler effect.
I admire all the work you do…your family is so lucky to have such a good mom…you remind me so much of my mom
If you ever find a source for this cookbook it would be wonderful to buy, I have others but a more modern one would be nice.
Great knowledge & recipe! I get older cookers from thrift stores because they have better quality materials, too. I’m 71 so I know the difference of old versus new😅 Blessings 🤗🇨🇦
Yes. You’ve experienced the change.
