In 1964, we bought our house and started from scratch with no grass on the lawn or in the back yard...just crabgrass. It took awhile, but we created a lawn. I wanted a garden and just wanted to start with tomatoes, so I bought a kit that said Beefsteak Tomatoes. I planted the seeds in the little peat pots that came with the kit, and kept them in a a lasagna pan with water, near the sliding doors on a table, where they would get plenty of sun when they sprouted. Then, instead of thinning out the sprouts, I carefully removed each sprout separately and planted them in extra peat pots that I had bought . I planted them in rows and mulched the tomato plants with seaweed that I gathered from the bay, near our development. I also fed them lamb dip. A neighbor advised me to sprinkle them with lime, just to sweeten the soil and also the tomatoes. They grew and when they were the size of golf balls, they ripened. My husband said "I think you have cherry tomatoes, not beefsteak." He was right. We had hundreds of cherry tomatoes. I pulled weeds just before sundown, every night before the tomatoes were ready to harvest. Before going to bed, I would soak in the tub with alcohol in the water, to stop the itching from the mosquito bites. I felt like the little red hen. No one wanted to help pull the weeds, but they ate the tomatoes without hesitation. They probably don't remember, but I do ... We gave loads of cherry tomatoes to friends who were having a christening for their son. They put large bowls filled with cherry tomatoes on the two long tables that were pushed together to make room for everyone to sit. There were at least five or six bowls. We also sliced them for sandwiches, as they were so large, but they were not beefsteaks, just big, delicious cherry tomatoes. The End.
Cherry tomatoes. My favorite. Every year I grows a lot. I have made mexican salsa with it and tastes so good. I use them like a regular tomato. Because every year I get plenty.

@@patsycav. Yea your are right about the 5g. I hate those new towers. They even caumaflage them like a tree. There is one close to my house. Also hate those Quemtrails. That clouds our beautifull sun. I am same I am home at the moment with my kids. But when I have to go shopping I don't wear A mask too. I am a happy women and I am not afraid for whatever comes. I know this is the moment that a lot of people will wake up. And see the real true.
Just a little tip: I have found that if you pre-water your soil when you are mixing it in your bucket, you will eliminate the risk of displacing the seed because you do not have to water them in. Also, you can cover the cups with plastic wrap and a rubber band to create a tiny greenhouse and it will hold moisture better so that you don't have to water much. Just be sure to remove the plastic before the seedlings get to big.

I live in a county known and prided for our tomatoes, in fact the first person to get a tomato on the vine makes it in the local paper #goals
I have a tomato binder!! I keep them in baseball card sleeves. They last for many years. I could grow my whole garden in tomatoes. I live the way they smell when they first sprout. My dad has seeds that he has saved every year from a polish tomato my grandfather used to grow. I will keep that tradition going.

Another from Brisbane who has stumbled onto this channel. Very informative and straight to the point. I have tried a local community garden and growing veggies in the common areas of my unit block but all my produce was being taken before I even got a look in. My son has bought his first house in Salisbury and it came with two long raised beds so I have started over there. Much better and I can grow what I like to feed myself, my ex-wife, my son and my ex mother in law.

I just had to say thank you thank you thank you!! Because of your videos I have been able to get my husband to support my gardening dream. I started last year with just some cantolopes from seeds from the ones that we ate, and they grew. Now I am a very low budget gardener. Everything that I use came from the alleys in my neighborhood. For raised beds I use old tires for a trellis I actually got lucky and found a neighbor redoing their backyard and I got a bunch of precut different length strips and 4 mesh to protect my garden from birds and cats I use old screens or an old sheet that I cover and uncover throughout the day. But because of your videos my husband very happily now and excited to help it's helping me take those pieces of trellis and make arches out of them putting a tire at the end of one so I can train the plants to go up each trellis and in the backyard which is a little patio we are doing a small rummage Greenhouse super excited now he'll even actually buy me the correct soil and wood chips and mash that I need to protect my garden thank you I live in Arizona by the way good luck with your garden this year oh and also we plan on growing peppers bell peppers cucumbers melons and beans and since you suggested that I need to bring some bees to my area to help pollinate my flowers on my plants I am planting some regular flowers and the area I hate bees but I love to garden thank you again

Hi Jess. Here in Australia it was 102F outside today and I've been debating starting a second round of tomatoes after my early ones got badly scorched and finished half way through the expected season. That makes this video perfect. Thank you. We have NO last frost date because we dont get frosts in hot Mediterranean zone 10. If I can keep the seed cool enough for effective germination we should see another crop. Wish I could show you my ever growing tomato seed collection!! Yours is entirely appropriate! Seeing all those seeds made me smile. Thanks for sharing.

Great call. An inexpensive way might be to even put a tarp over the green house since yours is clear. That could help keep temps low. Maybe not cover the whole thing, you obviously need sun light
@@RootsandRefugeFarm I've seen you mention a couple of times that you put multiple seeds in, then transplant or pinch off. Why not germinate them before planting? [paper towel method, etc.] Then there's no waste of time or supplies or seeds!

In watching so many videos to learn to have a nice productive garden I have found that lots of people have a real love of tomatoes. I loled when you were showing your tomato seed collection.
Just used this method to start my tomatoes! I'm just starting to learn how to garden and have always had my seedlings die within a week. Using your soil ratios and the solo cups, even used a drill for the holes! Thank you for this video. My homestead skill goals this year include having enough paste tomatoes to make at least one batch of sauce.
I'm in region 5b and (under your inspiration!) plan to start my Loofah seeds in solo cups any day now since they take 200 days to maturity. Also (under your inspiration) I am planning on purchasing 2 cattle panels, to grow my loofahs and also some Chinese Python Snake Beans (Got them from Baker Creek - also inspired by you! HA!)....But instead of raised beds I plan to use some straw bales, so hope they all turn out well! Can't wait for the beauty to begin and the snow and cold that we have here presently to go away!! Does anyone have any wisdom as the germinated loofah seeds are about 1 1/2 inches tall and it’s only been nine days of germination. They are kept under a light and I planted one seed in each solo cup. Then I put the cup with plant in a 2nd cup with some small stones and water so they can stay moist. But I probably have another 40 days before they can be put outside. I’m wondering; goodness, will the roots start growing out of the cup or what? I know transplanting can be challenging if the roots are disturbed too much. I just want to make sure I’m having enough space while they are inside. I don’t know quite what to expect other than loofahs are very aggressive growers. Thanks for any tips questions.
My best seed starting success was from using a general purpose potting mix (Lowes Sta-Green is what I use in a 2 cu ft bag) in the bottom 2/3 of the cups or pots and top with seed starter mix to allow the seeds some fine media to grow in. Espoma Seed starter has endo/ecto mycorrhizae and it is an awesome product for GR8 results. I mostly use the 6-pack and transplant up to 3-1/2 square pots or yougart containers
I love your tomato seed collection! I will never think your videos are too long - I love all the stuff you share with us! You are awesome! I don't think you have to be wasteful with red solo cups. I wash them and reuse them also. I love your system!
Hello from Northwest Florida! I’m so glad I came across this video. I’ve been a subscriber for 6 months and have been discouraged with my Pink Brandywine tomatoes I grow in buckets. The high heat has really taken a toll on them(2). I decided I’d have plenty of time to start new ones from seed . We are lucky if we get frost in December! It’s good to know I’m not the only one attempting this! Love how happy and willing to share your gardening tips with us❤
I have you beat by a few thousand. I have grown tomatoes for some 40 years and have a collection of over 10,000 varieties. I add to this every year. I enjoy the story behind the seed almost as much as the tomato. I have several of those mead folder things and have them filled with trading card sleeves and then coin envelopes with seeds. it helps me to keep things in order.

I used Miahs trick for putting drainage in my solo cups today. I did not have a drill bit that size so I put 3 small holes around the bottoms. Thank you Muah what a time saver.

I'm inspired to try a second round of tomatoes. I'm living in Kerrville, Texas (zone 6B) and I, too, have a greenhouse. I keep it cool by using a mister and a fan - of course all the vents/windows are open. I found you a week ago and I can't get enough of your vids. We don't get snow where I live in an outer western suburb of Sydney NSW. Just a back yard gardener. I have an old oval water tank cut into four and a heap of pots. Have you tried gallon milk jugs as mini green houses for starting your plants? I use them here in Colorado for spring planting and as long as the hail doesn't get too big plastic milk jugs work great to protect my little plant babies.

I seriously have not been able to grow much of anything. I live in the Northwest of Oregon where we get sooo much rain. I would love to have a garden like yours, but find I can grow limited veggies successfully. I am sure it is just me, but I am learning and have hope. I have grown zucchini, lettuce, and carrots thus far. My tomatoes never turn out. I love them too. I am determined to figure out the best way to grow them in our area. Ah yes!! This is what is happening to me right now. I planted in potting soil, all things germinated and they’ve stayed stagnant for about a month! So glad I saw this. I have everything but the perlite. Will go get some today and transplant immediately!
I absolutely love your videos. They are full of good tips and NO bullshit. It is good to see the relationship you have with your husband and kids as well. Good people me thinks!! The only suggestion I would like to make is that you put the temperature in Degrees Celsius on the screen when you are giving advice that is temperature sensitive. I garden in Brisbane Australia in a sub-tropical growing zone so I need to be able to quickly ascertain our climate equivalents. Stay safe and I look forward to many more videos in the future.

I love your video's. My all time favourite tomato to grow is called Coyote. It's this tiny yellow tomato that's always the first to produce and the last to stop. And it's so sweet and flavourful. It is very vigorous, and can go a bit crazy if you don't keep it in check. I usually don't, so my greenhouse turns into a jungle filled with little golden tomatoes.

I am so happy I ran into your channel! I am able to follow you without pausing. I have tried so many times to start a veggie garden to just waste money and more importantly my precious time, especially when I did not learn anything from my failed attempts.
In the suburbs, it's easy to score containers for starting seedlings. I love, love, love using yogurt containers - both the individual servings and the big ones. They're the perfect size. Every recycling day they're easy to find in the recycling containers of all my neighbours. Free is always good.
I have my own way of putting holes in my red solo cups! I use a soldering iron I got for 25 cents at a garage sale. It quickly melts through the plastic so it doesn't make a mess or a power tool. ;) And, I got my cups for free. They were used at a party for minute-to-win-it games and the hostess was going to throw them out afterward, so I asked her for them. She was more than happy to give them to me. :D
I love your treasure case. I should it done that. My seeds I put them in a recycled plastic uncover in my metal shed. When I was about to seed them. There was a big mice or a young rat. I don't what it was. But it ate most of my seeds and made a nest inside the plastic container. Next time I will keep them inside my house with a case like yours.

Your videos are so helpful to newbies like me. I may have gardened since the 1968 but I have never started seeds inside. I bought coco coir but I didn't buy any soil bags. Oops! Back to the hardware store! What do you think of using cinnamon to control diseases in your starter cups? I am starting a lettuce mixture for now but in a couple of months I will try starting tomatoes by following your directions. Thanks again!

I live in a county known and prided for our tomatoes, in fact the first person to get a tomato on the vine makes it in the local paper #goals
I have a tomato binder!! I keep them in baseball card sleeves. They last for many years. I could grow my whole garden in tomatoes. I live the way they smell when they first sprout. My dad has seeds that he has saved every year from a polish tomato my grandfather used to grow. I will keep that tradition going.

Another from Brisbane who has stumbled onto this channel. Very informative and straight to the point. I have tried a local community garden and growing veggies in the common areas of my unit block but all my produce was being taken before I even got a look in. My son has bought his first house in Salisbury and it came with two long raised beds so I have started over there. Much better and I can grow what I like to feed myself, my ex-wife, my son and my ex mother in law.

Finding this channel has been a Godsend to me. Their advice is always spot on and not full of crap. After failures at my community garden and around my Dept. of Housing unit complex I am so glad that my son has bought a house only 5 minutes away. I just had to say thank you thank you thank you!! Because of your videos I have been able to get my husband to support my gardening dream. I started last year with just some cantolopes from seeds from the ones that we ate, and they grew. Now I am a very low budget gardener. Everything that I use came from the alleys in my neighborhood. For raised beds I use old tires for a trellis I actually got lucky and found a neighbor redoing their backyard and I got a bunch of precut different length strips and 4 mesh to protect my garden from birds and cats I use old screens or an old sheet that I cover and uncover throughout the day. But because of your videos my husband very happily now and excited to help it's helping me take those pieces of trellis and make arches out of them putting a tire at the end of one so I can train the plants to go up each trellis and in the backyard which is a little patio we are doing a small rummage Greenhouse super excited now he'll even actually buy me the correct soil and wood chips and mash that I need to protect my garden thank you I live in Arizona by the way good luck with your garden this year oh and also we plan on growing peppers bell peppers cucumbers melons and beans and since you suggested that I need to bring some bees to my area to help pollinate my flowers on my plants I am planting some regular flowers and the area I hate bees but I love to garden thank you again

We have NO last frost date because we dont get frosts in hot Mediterranean zone 10. If I can keep the seed cool enough for effective germination we should see another crop. Great call. An inexpensive way might be to even put a tarp over the green house since yours is clear. That could help keep temps low. Maybe not cover the whole thing, you obviously need sun light
@@RootsandRefugeFarm I've seen you mention a couple of times that you put multiple seeds in, then transplant or pinch off. Why not germinate them before planting? [paper towel method, etc.] Then there's no waste of time or supplies or seeds!

Just used this method to start my tomatoes! I'm just starting to learn how to garden and have always had my seedlings die within a week. Using your soil ratios and the solo cups, even used a drill for the holes! Thank you for this video. My homestead skill goals this year include having enough paste tomatoes to make at least one batch of sauce.
I'm in region 5b and (under your inspiration!) plan to start my Loofah seeds in solo cups any day now since they take 200 days to maturity. Also (under your inspiration) I am planning on purchasing 2 cattle panels, to grow my loofahs and also some Chinese Python Snake Beans (Got them from Baker Creek - also inspired by you! HA!)....But instead of raised beds I plan to use some straw bales, so hope they all turn out well! Can't wait for the beauty to begin and the snow and cold that we have here presently to go away!! Does anyone have any wisdom as the germinated loofah seeds are about 1 1/2 inches tall and it’s only been nine days of germination. They are kept under a light and I planted one seed in each solo cup. Then I put the cup with plant in a 2nd cup with some small stones and water so they can stay moist. But I probably have another 40 days before they can be put outside. I’m wondering; goodness, will the roots start growing out of the cup or what? I know transplanting can be challenging if the roots are disturbed too much. I just want to make sure I’m having enough space while they are inside. I don’t know quite what to expect other than loofahs are very aggressive growers. Thanks for any tips questions.

My best seed starting success was from using a general purpose potting mix (Lowes Sta-Green is what I use in a 2 cu ft bag) in the bottom 2/3 of the cups or pots and top with seed starter mix to allow the seeds some fine media to grow in. Espoma Seed starter has endo/ecto mycorrhizae and it is an awesome product for GR8 results. I mostly use the 6-pack and transplant up to 3-1/2 square pots or yougart containers

Hello from Northwest Florida! I’m so glad I came across this video. I’ve been a subscriber for 6 months and have been discouraged with my Pink Brandywine tomatoes I grow in buckets. The high heat has really taken a toll on them(2). I decided I’d have plenty of time to start new ones from seed . We are lucky if we get frost in December! It’s good to know I’m not the only one attempting this! Love how happy and willing to share your gardening tips with us❤

I have you beat by a few thousand. I have grown tomatoes for some 40 years and have a collection of over 10,000 varieties. I add to this every year. I enjoy the story behind the seed almost as much as the tomato. I have several of those mead folder things and have them filled with trading card sleeves and then coin envelopes with seeds. it helps me to keep things in order.

Try using your suckers you pull off your tomatoes in June/July. Let them root in water until roots appear, then pot until ready for transplanting. This will allow you a Fall crop. Hello from a fellow Arkansan as well. Love your videos.

I like to fill my cups 1/3 -1/2 way with dirt and add more dirt to eliminate having to transplant.

I'm inspired to try a second round of tomatoes. I'm living in Kerrville, Texas (zone 6B) and I, too, have a greenhouse. I keep it cool by using a mister and a fan - of course all the vents/windows are open.
I found you a week ago and I can't get enough of your vids. Also, you are very lucky to have such a handy man around to help. It seems that most of the very successful gardening channels have great support from significant others.

I'm from down under so when you say spring I do it in spring - never mind the month. At the mo we are in our last month of summer so I'm planting the Amish paste I received today, The cherry and romas went in a while back. We don't get snow where I live in an outer western suburb of Sydney NSW. Just a back yard gardener. I have an old oval water tank cut into four and a heap of pots. Have you tried gallon milk jugs as mini green houses for starting your plants? I use them here in Colorado for spring planting and as long as the hail doesn't get too big plastic milk jugs work great to protect my little plant babies.

I just rewatched this video. Starting at 2:35 I see a front yard that could be a delicious palette for your flowers. It reminds me of the yard in Morning Glory when Will Parker comes home to Elly Dinsmore after the war(the book not the movie). Add to your sunflowers and the chimes that sing spirits home.

I seriously have not been able to grow much of anything. I live in the Northwest of Oregon where we get sooo much rain. I would love to have a garden like yours, but find I can grow limited veggies successfully. I am sure it is just me, but I am learning and have hope. I have grown zucchini, lettuce, and carrots thus far. My tomatoes never turn out. I love them too. I am determined to figure out the best way to grow them in our area. Ah yes!! This is what is happening to me right now. I planted in potting soil, all things germinated and they’ve stayed stagnant for about a month! So glad I saw this. I have everything but the perlite. Will go get some today and transplant immediately!
I absolutely love your videos. They are full of good tips and NO bullshit. It is good to see the relationship you have with your husband and kids as well. Good people me thinks!! The only suggestion I would like to make is that you put the temperature in Degrees Celsius on the screen when you are giving advice that is temperature sensitive. I garden in Brisbane Australia in a sub-tropical growing zone so I need to be able to quickly ascertain our climate equivalents. Stay safe and I look forward to many more videos in the future.

I love your video's. My all time favourite tomato to grow is called Coyote. It's this tiny yellow tomato that's always the first to produce and the last to stop. And it's so sweet and flavourful. It is very vigorous, and can go a bit crazy if you don't keep it in check. I usually don't, so my greenhouse turns into a jungle filled with little golden tomatoes.

In the suburbs, it's easy to score containers for starting seedlings. I love, love, love using yogurt containers - both the individual servings and the big ones. They're the perfect size. Every recycling day they're easy to find in the recycling containers of all my neighbours. Free is always good.

I have my own way of putting holes in my red solo cups! I use a soldering iron I got for 25 cents at a garage sale. It quickly melts through the plastic so it doesn't make a mess or a power tool. ;)
And, I got my cups for free. They were used at a party for minute-to-win-it games and the hostess was going to throw them out afterward, so I asked her for them. She was more than happy to give them to me. :D
I used foam cups and a little corn holder to poke holes! Your way is a smart idea!
I love your treasure case. I should it done that. My seeds I put them in a recycled plastic uncover in my metal shed. When I was about to seed them. There was a big mice or a young rat. I don't what it was. But it ate most of my seeds and made a nest inside the plastic container. Next time I will keep them inside my house with a case like yours.

Back to the hardware store! What do you think of using cinnamon to control diseases in your starter cups? I am starting a lettuce mixture for now but in a couple of months I will try starting tomatoes by following your directions. Thanks again!

I love using Solo cups. They are the perfect size and shape for seedlings.
