Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses known for their ability to infect the skin and mucous membranes. Some strains of HPV are particularly notorious for their role in causing cancers, such as cervical, anal, oropharyngeal, and other genital cancers. The process by which HPV can mutate cells and lead to cancer involves several key mechanisms:
Infection and Integration: Certain high-risk HPV strains, such as HPV-16 and HPV-18, can infect epithelial cells in the mucous membranes. The viral DNA can integrate into the host cell’s genome, a critical step in the transformation process. This integration disrupts the normal regulatory functions of the host cell’s DNA.
Oncoprotein Production: Once integrated, the viral genome expresses oncoproteins, particularly E6 and E7. These proteins interfere with the cell’s regulatory pathways. E6 oncoprotein binds to and promotes the degradation of p53, a tumor suppressor protein responsible for controlling cell cycle and inducing apoptosis in damaged cells. E7 oncoprotein binds to and inactivates retinoblastoma protein (pRb), another tumor suppressor that regulates cell cycle progression.
Cell Cycle Disruption: By inactivating p53 and pRb, the E6 and E7 proteins allow infected cells to evade normal cell cycle controls. This leads to uncontrolled cell division and prevents the usual mechanisms of DNA repair and programmed cell death (apoptosis). As a result, mutations can accumulate in the cellular DNA.

My mom is a oral hygienist & her biggest tip she always tells me is: if you ever have a wound of any sort in your mouth that doesn’t heal within 2 weeks, immediately seek help from a dentist. Whether it’s a cut, a bite on your cheek/tongue, a sore, anything. Wounds in your mouth normally heal fast, usually under a week, so if anything takes longer than 2 weeks it could be an indicator that something else is going on in your mouth that needs medical attention.

And just remember it'll never be more uncomfortable with protection than it would be with a disease. You also get used to the condoms.

This is nonsensical and a dangerous message, because the one they love might be cheaters and if your children are NOT informed adults, they might never get tested, because they blindly trust their partners and think that that suffices. It is better to teach your children proper age adequate sex education and tell them to protect themselves having only SAFE sex, which means, using condoms (male or female) even with their spouses(forms of protection like this also exists for female couples), also using a separate form of birth control and getting tested for STD's every six months.
Reasons like this are exactly why I was never a fan of "hookup culture". I'd rather be considered a "prude" than give access to my body like it's a party favor.

There is no test for men and woman get tested with their Pap smears and no test available for throat. And kicker is I got this cancer in my nasopharyngex-very back of my nose and no test available for that either! By the time drs figured it out it was stage 4 and also in my lymph nodes on both sides of my body
@@joanbaczek2575 -- And a cervical or anal Pap smear only comes up abnormal if the HPV infection has already caused pre-cancerous or cancerous changes. It is not always as reliable at picking up HPV when there is normal cellular activity, even when specifically asking for the HPV DNA test.
Even if we had an FDA-approved screening test for other mucous membranes, or for the outside of the penis and other genital skin, if the viral DNA amount is low, it will come up as a false negative.
Even on a biopsy of an obvious wart from the genital skin, the lab can't say for sure if it's negative for one of the high-risk strains when the test comes up negative. They can only say whether it is positive for one of them. There is a disclaimer on the test result about it possibly being a false negative if the total amount of viral DNA is low in the specimen.

Absolutely important I agree but it’s also important to note that symptoms lay dormant in men. You can be a loyal loving partner but if you didn’t know your previous partner had HPV and you had no symptoms, you wouldn’t even think to get tested. Hence why vaccines and sexual education are so important!

I read a pamphlet about STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) years ago. It said that certain STD's can be transmitted orally/by mouth. Kids should become well educated about ALL STD's, their symptoms, how infectious they are, how they are transmitted & all the effective vaccines & other methods available to prevent transmission BEFORE they become sexually active.

Absolutely!! I was a young, robust virgin woman when I had sex with my partner, whom I contracted HPV from. He was the only partner I had sex with before being diagnosed with HPV, so I know I contracted it from him. It doesn't take much at all to get it. As I learned this the hard way. Fortunate for me, I was able to fight it thru 2 LEAP treatments (modern medicine). My body’s immune system was strong enough to fight it off through my tough immune system, but as we know, this isn't always the case for some people. I am one of the lucky ones. Thanks for spreading this message. It is one of the easiest STDs to catch, yet it wasn't something I had ever heard of until I was diagnosed with it myself.

I was watching the video and was thinking it may not matter how careful you are with your number of partners because you can't control your partners sexual history. I had an ex who was diagnosed with the virus at the end of our relationship. Luckily, I didn't get infected by him. Using protection during relationships is important, too, and getting checked often. If you are sexually active, then get checked often for yourself (not based on the number of partners you had/have).

And I knew he wasn’t lying because if you can contract HPV from intercourse, why couldn’t you get it in your mouth/throat from oral? It made sense scientifically.

I remember when Michael Douglas was trying to tell everyone that this was the reason he got oral cancer, back in 2010-ish. The media ridiculed him relentlessly.
To be fair, tobacco and alcohol consumption also causes this type of cancer and he was using both excessively. Having the three major risk factors for cancer might have been the cause, or maybe he would have gotten it without any if the three because cancer doesn't discriminate unfortunately.
But I still agree that it's wrong to ridicule someone who openly speaks about HPV. It's an important topic and everything that helps to push for more vaccinations is a good effort.

I ended up with HPV due to my ex's proclivity for the use of substances and tendency towards cheating. It was to the point of being pre-cancer. Thankfully, the cells were able to be removed. @@ai7593 It's impossible to blame it solely on oral sex but I got throat cancer from HPV. I've never smoked a day of my life and they tested specifically for that. They did tell me that oral sex does greatly increase the risk though. Single worst thing I've ever gone through. Keep yourself safe

As a Dental Hygienist there are oral cancer screenings at the dentist. Go to your dentist and ask as a part of the exam. They are required and trained to do a visual oral cancer exam as part of the examination as well as hygienist. Some offices have additional oral cancer screening tools.

Dentists don't know anything. The surgeon knew though and refered to the hospital for confirmation tests. My opinion of dentists is pretty low these days. OK for pulling teeth and fillings but not much else.

I got HPV, apparently, from either my cheating ex, or from when I was raped. (I suspect it was the latter, I have other reasons to believe that.) And I had several precancer of the cervix, & NEVER would have known if my husband hadn't gotten me pregnant. Because of the trauma from the assaults, I NEVER would have gone for a pap smear in time to catch it. Ever. I would have had actual cancer, probably late state, before ever realizing anything was wrong, if not for our baby. We lost her right at the start of the 2nd trimester. I will always miss her & remember her. She saved my life.
Moral of the story - PLEASE get your pap smears, even if it's scary for you or hard for whatever reason. Cancer is worse than the momentary discomfort/fear/etc. during the test. Tell them if you're nervous, they'll be really kind about it, generally. It's worth it - never skip your pap.

cancer is inevitable for virtually everyone on a long enough timeline as we do not have cells that replicate perfectly every time. The more we study the world, the more we are going to become aware of how things in our environment alter our DNA. It's very unlikely that there is actually more cancer now than there ever was, we just didn't have the skills to understand what we were looking at before.

Understand that STIs are a part of living as a sexual being and most are if not all are curable and/or treatable.

Doesn't change the fact of still getting it with one partner. Keen eyes see that number of partners CAN be a risk but the ultimate risk is people's lack of honesty and safety. Just saying. Too many people out here cheating and passing STDs to their partners

I know someone dying from cervical cancer. She cheated on her Husband and got HPV. A few years later she was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer. Now it is stage 4 and they are saying she has months to live. It doesn't pay to be promiscuous....

My ex husband cheated and as soon as I found out about it I went straight to my Dr to get tested and thankfully it all came out negative. He’s on the streets for several months & now is apologizing. I don’t think STD and stuff ever cross his mind, but oh well, it’s his body to protect not mine

you need to wait atleast 30 days! some STI are only visible after 1 month of wait! the test could show negative even tho you have the STI still in you, bcs you need to wait atleast 30 days after sexual encounter bcs thats the time when every possible STI will be detected in your blood or urine! i would check on every possible STI out there!

Everyone gets HPV and you don't need to have sex to get it. ALL warts are a HPV. It's very common in children.
