Robotnik shows good sportivity in this sequel: he saves Sonic from lava to have a proper fight, and at the end he seems to return Tails by saying "ok, ok, you won this time, here is your friend. See you around !"
He saves Sonic from the lava because he thinks Sonic has a chaos emerald and he doesn't want the emerald to melt (or perhaps to be really difficult or impossible to collect even if it doesn't melt).
@@Torthrodhel Seriously, where did you get this from? This makes a lot of sense actually.
@@rinsatomi9527 just by wondering the same thing and asking my fiancée, who is a lovely nerdy awesome person. :D
@@Torthrodhel you could also argue that Robotnik is so egotistical that he won't let Sonic die by anyone else's hands.
@@dellzincht that's true. I prefer the chaos emerald thing though, because I think the whole "by my hand only" thing is really overdone just in general, and not very realistic, like in a pinch even the most egotistical of villains would probably just let it happen if the opportunity came along. Problem solved, right? And the chance to move on to other things. So it never feels like a good enough excuse for illogical behaviour.
It is a popular story beat, all the same. One of my favourite film series just used it. Was slightly annoying.
These 8-BIT versions of Sonic are beautiful and very well produced!
Good times... ♥
I will say though that I do like the boss theme for the master system version of Sonic 2. Mainly because it’s really good and I watched super Mario Bros Z when I was younger and it was great.
Except for "Sonic Blast" and "Sonic Labyrinth." I regret buying the former on the 3DS Virtual Console lol.
One thing that made Sonic 1 shine on the Master System, was that you were geographically moving from place to place on the island map. It's a shame it's missing from this. One level you're underground, the next you're in the clouds. Still, top game.
I liked when the chaos emeralds were obtained by exploring the stages thoroughly, rather than mastering the bonus stages.
Would be nice if the emeralds were in a random location though, once you've found them you can always get them in subsequent playthroughs. The Gimmick Mountain emerald took me ages to find as a kid though, I remember running the clock out so many times, think I was eventually told the location by a kid in the year above at school.
@@steved8193 The gimmick Mountain emerald was the only one I couldn't find. It was impossible. I had to write into Teletext games magazine (digitiser) asking if anyone knew. Fortunately they published my letter! Someone responded to my letter about a month later, explaining how to do it.
That's how things worked back then, before the Internet!!
Sonic 3&k kinda brought it back, iknow the final product isn't what they fully imagined but still it felt like you were traveling across the island.
That type of level design really does add alot. Sonic 2 on genesis kinda had the same thing but it wasn't stated or shown except at the last 2 levels.
It's a shame we don't get games like this anymore. They are amazing and truly some of the best.
If I had the spare cash I'd buy a sms Sonic game, like I wanted as as a kid since I had all the genesis ones and knew there was this game gear rv version. Since genesis supposedly ran sms games.
@@davewalmash6849 Same, for years as a kid I could never find that emerald. Always got the bad ending until one day I was playing and I stumbled on the hidden wall by accident. I got so excited to finally be able to see the final and real ending.
@@LoopyAnh I think Sega missed a trick but not making Sonic 4 on the Saturn as a Metroid style interconnected world. This would work perfectly with Sonic’s style of level design.

I remember when I was a teenager, I always kept riding my bike out to Target because they had a Sonic 2 Game Gear demo unit set up and every day I came there and loitered in the store JUST to play this game. Eventually the store called my family because someone worked there that was a friend of the family, and actually ratted me out that I was just coming to the store to play the game for hours every day and not buy anything, and I got in trouble. That was a load of bullshit because i'm pretty sure I didn't do anything wrong, and plus I was just a kid, so I was pissed that I got in trouble just for that.
That is my main Sonic 2 Game Gear memory, that i'll never forget.
Hah well at least you learned from it
GET REVENGE! KICK THEIR BALLS!
@La Li Lu Le Lo Uhh no it's not. It's called loitering. Go play in your yard or playground or whatever. The store isn't for kids to hang out, for hours, everyday.
What's weird.. just reading this comment.. it's dawned on me that I've never seen game demos set up in any store anywhere for quite a while. The future is stinky.
@@MattExzy yeah that's what I have noticeda lot here in NYC for many years now. Most of the demo stations are mostly turned off and collecting dust.
My very first video game ever, aah :( i was so young, and i won a master system II on a promotion from the cereals we used to have as breakfast (Kellog's Smacks).
My mother told me to fill it, and i told her that noone ever won that kind of things, she insisted, and a few months it arrived with this game and alex kidd.
I didnt even know what videogames were until that day. Aaah , good times... The memories... Guess this was the very first game i beat in my life too, playing with my father, who by the way loved it as much as i did.
Youre so lucky then
You from good ol Europe?
She bought it for you to allow you the pleasure of thinking you won something. Either way very cool
Dragão ball
I wish i had a sms
But later i won a dreamcast but it soo rare in Vietnam so my parents decided to sold it away :(
This was a super satisfying play-through!
As a kid, this was the first Sonic game I ever played. This is what started it all for me.
7:08 Robotnik has a heart after all.
Well it actually makes sense on why Robotnik would save Sonic. It wouldn't be as satisfying letting Sonic die on the lava rather than killing him himself.
I love how you refer to him as Dr. Robotnik too. When did he get renamed to Eggman?
OniFeez Wasn't that in the cartoons he was renamed? I know in Sonic X he was mostly called Dr Eggman but I think he was sometimes referred to as Dr Robotnik in it (been over a decade since I last watched an episode of Sonic X)
OniFeez he was always Eggman in Japan, America went made Dr Robotnik when some comic came out or something like that.
With Adventure series they finally went with his real name. Iprefer Robotnik tho still...
Look what he does for tails in the bad ending of this game!

I found this game rather difficult when I was younger. Particularly the Sky High Zone, the Aqua Lake Zone and the Sumo Pig boss(Green Hills Zone)
I somehow made it to the end of Scrambled Egg Zone without collecting all the emeralds to progress to the final zone and whilst I got the bad ending, I was satisfied with the progress that I'd made and decided to call it a day
Yes this is regarded as the hardest Sonic game they released
Made more difficult by the fact there are no rings on any of the boss fights.
I conquered this game as a kid on the Game Gear. Was even able to find all the Chaos Emeralds on my own without any guide or anything. Pretty sure there were no guides for this back then anyway.
I felt quite accomplished when I pulled that off as a kid, felt like quite the feat. They definitely were not easy to find.
@@skins4thewin i managed in the master system but the game gear version I couldn’t get past the first boss, the screen was cropped in so you could hardly see the cannon balls before it was too late!
@89mjrd44 That seems to be where lots of ppl have trouble. I think it may have given me an issue for a few minutes the first time I fought that boss, but once you figure it out it becomes easy and you'll just breeze thru it like it's nothing.
You have to have touch, can't go rushing in. Need to use the D pad lightly & also kind of "counter steer" in the opposite direction on the D Pad so you don't let yourself slide into the boss.
It's not too difficult once you learn how to control Sonic better on slopes. You have to counter with the opposite direction to keep steady. Takes a little practice I suppose.
I am going to be honest here, the Sega Master System in terms of graphical capabilities and quality is a lot better than the NES.
People are doing impressive stuff with both hardware though.
graphics def better some times there was a lot more slow down on master system.
true
The NES is built with 1983-era hardware, while the Master System's hardware is from '85 (as a massive improvement to the machine Sega released in '83 to originally compete with the Famicom in Japan).
Considering the two years worth of hardware advantage the SMS has, it'd be a bit disappointing if it didn't. A global system palette that makes sense and more colors per-sprite, hardware designed for simultaneous H/V scrolling, that sort of thing.
the only thing they truly skimped on was sound, keeping the same super-basic three high-pitched square waves+noise chip (and they were planning to release the FM sound hardware worldwide at some point to remove that disadvantage, even if it ultimately stayed JP only).
Shame the soundchip though. I feel the NES had a better one, then again the SMS had a very decent one.
Same composers as Sonic CD. That's why the music in this version is so good. I prefer the boss music on the game gear though.
+Highway Guy Somehow that would explain Sonic CD(JP)'s "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior"
The JP composer or US Composer?
Interesting that the music on Green Hills zone (Not Green Hill) is the same as the japenese opening in Sonic CD
Do people really like this OST? I thought it was pretty bland... Sonic 1's was way more memorable.
@@Baguenaudeur It is memorable yes, but I think thatg not too much because people don't play the Game Gear games so much, so the musics have less chances to stick on their head.
But there are some musics that are really memorable, like Bridge, Jungle and Aqua Lake.
Childhood memories ❤️ First Sonic game I got for my Master System back in 1992 as a wee 8 year old. Still have my Master System, and have snagged Sonic 1 and Sonic Chaos too for it ❤️
The invincibility theme at 09:26 combined with the h-glide makes one of the greatest and most genius moments of all time in the history of games.
Let's not go nuts 😂
I remember getting this cartridge for Christmas when I was 5 years old.
Best Christmas present ever!
That Aqua lake tune still rings in my head sometimes. Awesome game
Aqua Lake is annoying since it’s so easy to get a game over and in act 2 when you’re floating in a bubble you have to go up and avoid spears and enemies specifically lobsters which are really annoying because you don’t know if they will move or not I have that song burned into my brain same thing with the act layout because I have been playing for hours and I finally beat the game
@@Jhon-fe3qq You can skip that section by jumping over the tube that leads you into it, blew my mind the first time I found it.
ah my childhood playing these games everyday before and after school. the memories :)
The boss music is am Smbz
it's hard to accept the fact that the master system version of sonic 2 came out before the genesis version. THIS IS THE REAL SONIC 2.
ahhhh this is so good! Thank you for getting all the rings and lives and stuff! So much more fun to watch than jst watching someone race through the levels with no regards for all the fun stuff. Love your OCD :D
always chills when the game thanks us with "and you" :D :D
FR, I think I almost cried at that when younger.
Crystal Egg Zone, Robotnik fights using popcorn.

Beyond nostalgic, still set up the master system from time to time, this always gets a playthrough! Me, my bro and cousins spent ages mastering this game, all emeralds etc, good times. That edgy gimmick mt music reminds me of talking heads fear of music album somehow!

Happy 30th Birthday, Tails!😄
I remember beating the game when I was a kid. All emeralds and good ending. Oh, nostalgia...
Not going to lie, the visuals in this game are incredible for the Master System.
My absolute favorite Game Gear game growing up. I was actually able to find all of the Chaos Emeralds without any guide of any kind as a young kid, thought it was pretty impressive at the time lol.
Those were the days when gaming was good! ´nuff said!
That's exactly the same feeling here... old school will live forever inside of me!
Stefanie Ehmke 3D
Pedro Ariz You must be a Thirty-Something...😀
Like I do play and enjoy some new games but there is somethin super special about this whole era.
STILL IS.
Green Hills Zone = Toot toot Sonic warrior
Apparently Mecha Green Hill Zone's music from Sonic Chaos is also derived from it.
I can kind of hear it but it isn't as close as Green Hills Zone's theme.
And don't forget sonic drift's invincibility music
Could never find that bloody Gimmick Mountain emerald. And these were the days before the Internet.
Ahhhhhh. This brings back so many memories. When I first played this it was so hard and it took me months to master it! Also like many of you u seriously struggled with that hang glider at first!
7:10 Dr. Robotnik Logic:
Pick up Sonic from falling in lava
Yet put him near a machine thingy to try and kill him
I played this on Xmas day back when I was 7. First proper video game I ever played . Happy memories
Sonic: You can never grab too many rings.
Waaaaaaaaaaait a second. The theme tune for Green Hill zone is that theme from Sonic CD, but this came out before that :O thats amazing
Just been talking about this! Used to love it as a kid and couldn't remember which game it was 😍
5:47 I like how the speed increases when going Uphill!
That's some elite engineering right there
That's my favourite thing about Sonic; all the backtracking they plan for you to do.
I love the way you play sonic lol . Sonic running past rings and you run back for them thinking "fuck can't forget them fuckers" hahaha
You played this so smoothly and went back for rings! Thanks for bringing back so many nostalgic memories xx
Was I the only one who was saying when he was watching this "Go back you forgot to break into that secret room over there" Then I realized that was the same way I used to play this game with other people when I was a kid. Oh memories.
I can't believe I managed to beat this game at the age of 6. God, so many hours put into this game
@Sympathy4TheDesu he was the chosen one
I'm very glad, that the Master System's Sonic's are exist. It's good that they don't try to make direct port of Mega Drive versions, but they 're tried something New and unique. It has good music, nice gameplay, some differences from Mega Drive games, design for stages also good! I need to play and finish this games in the future!
Very nice (looking) 8-bit game
Got my 5 year old niece and 8 year old nephew absolutely loving this game and sonic 1...2020, Covid-19 lockdown and the world going to pot...no problem we got family and the master system, tis all anyone needs!
The Sky High emerald is the HARDEST to get. Bar none!
Hopefully, whoever thought of putting it there steps on Legos everytime he/she wakes up from bed.
I've vaguely wondered for decades why I don't get any nostalgic feelings from videos of the original Sonic games and I've only just twigged it's because THESE are the ones I played, the Master System versions, not the Mega Drive games. I had such a clear memory of Crystal Egg Zone and I was beginning to think I was going mad
In the Sky high zone, at 9:07 - jump higher to the left, there is a hidden place with an extra life there.
This game did something I loved, minibosses were just really strong Badniks.
Love that, robotnik surely would have some killbots he doesn't mind losing.
Fun fact: this was the first Sonic game were you actually get something for collecting all chaos emeralds (crystal Egg zone and a good ending.)
Was I the only human who used the hang glider to get the yellow emerald?
@@Pczito I used it too 🤣
if this came out now you'd spend 3 hours registering, downloading updates, choosing the thickness of sonic's fur and what shade of blue it would be, configuring the controls, and then it would immediately crash.
That sounds more fun than the game
Somehow this version lacked the gloss of SMS' version of Sonic1. Still a fine platformer though.
But Sonic Chaos was really impressive for the SMS though.
I'm surprised how much love the Master System got in the UK compared to the US.
this is game gear, not sega
@@darthnegrus9255 Not this playthrough. It is played on both game gear and master system. This however, is master system because it has some fundamental differences from game gear, like boss difficulty and boss music.
@@darthnegrus9255 Lol what? Game Gear IS Sega, what are you talking about? And no, this is the Master System version, NOT the Game Gear version. There are very slight differences between the two.
@@skins4thewin dude, they're both 8 bit and Sega *Genesis* (which the thumbnail depicts) is 16 bit.

And, even after collecting all the Chaos Emeralds, defeating Dr. Eggman, rescuing Tails, AND getting the Good Ending, we are, still, sadly, greeted with the, antagonizing, Game Over screen at the end. All that's missing from this is the Tails Doll... [shiver]
Was I the only human who used the hang glider to get the yellow emerald?

That end sequence brings back a lot of good memories, and the sense of achievement. Me and my sister got this game for Christmas, amazing times 🤣.
Superb game. And tough as nails to get all the emeralds, contrary to the first MS Sonic.
Got this for my Birthday in December 1992, but my mum made me do my paper round before I could play it! Don't think I ever did that round as quickly as I did that day :D. Absolutely loved this game though... some great Master System games came out that year - Alien 3, Lemmings etc. Good, good times.
I used to think Doctor Robotnick was actually a cheeseburger in the end of level sign
I thought it was an octopus 😂

😆😆😆
I had this Sonic game. I never knew about Crystal Egg Zone until I came across it without knowing what I had to do to get to that zone. Those were the days, back when you had no internet to find out how to beat a game. Great days they were.
The end credits sequence is 3 minutes long. It felt much longer when I was a kid.
I remember being afraid of the water level as a kid ! Thanks for the video ^^
Not saving tails at the end results in you seeing a constellation of him at the end indicating that he is dead.
Damn is that dark or what
He's not dead, why is everyone cracking it up to be that?
@@jaypostromboli-jpgamertv-457 because there's two endings for this game. The good one, where sonic saves tails, and the bad where he doesn't save him.
I love how in the title screen it plays happy music while tails is getting kidnapped in the worse way possible.
7:10 Eggman is such a kind person , which saves Sonic for a fight.
Probably, one of the best 8 bit platform games ever.
Didn't know about the Ring-Rage Challenge to pick up every single ring. Good play, lad. Good play.
I remember when I was like 9 and accidentally bought this on the Wii Virtual Console instead of the Genesis version lol. I still like this game too though
I never seen such a ring hungry player in a sonic ever in my life. congratulations being the 1st in my eyes

Eu acho esse legal mas o primeiro é mais nostalgico pelo menos pra mim.
30 years ago i was playing this. Still have a bash now and again in emulation. Still love the zone themes.
i loved playing this game on my game gear when i was 13 good memories
I like how green hills zone acts music is the sonic CD intro
After so many years I get to see tails being rescued, I always missed out one 1 emerald
All these years, Ive owned genesis and played almost every variant of Sonic and never knew until today there was an 8bit master system version.
I could NEVER get up to the emerald in the sky high zone - I wish youtube had been around at the time :)
Lol for a long time as a kid it was the only Emerald I wasn't able to find. Luckily I found it by pure accident one day and was finally able to get them all :)
then? probably abraham lincoln would be on yt
ughh, i remember being a kid being SO FRUSTRATED with that one chaos emerald. i finally got it but i think it took me almost a month of playing the game to find it. ... and then even after knowing where it was, it was damn hard to identify what cloud to bounce off of to get it again haha
The gimmick mt emerald completely eluded me. Had to write into a games magazine (digitiser, ceefax) and someone wrote back with the answer months later. This is what you did before the Internet!!
Me and my uncle (I was 5) tried for hours to get it using the hang gliders. We did it eventually, but it was fucking HARD. I had NO IDEA you could just bounce up there till just now...
Toute mon enfance! des heures passées dessus avec ma soeur quand nous avions la dizaine... et maintenant nous approchons la quarantaine! Nostalgie :(
Oh no! Someone is collecting the rings that are there to be collected! The nerve of this guy!
Geeze! Sky High 2 used to drive me nuts trying to get the Emerald. >.<
As a kid, I stupidly tried the difficult way of gliding all the way from the beginning to the end. Constantly tapping backwards to fly level and diving in the storm winds so the extra speed would give me a height boost. I could do it maybe 50% of the time at best.
Amazing Game, Amazing Graphics, Love It!
So Sonic's about to die and Robotnik saves him. I always questioned that as a kid.
As an adult, I realize it's that Robotniks so maniacal, he wants to kill sonic himself.
Anyone else think this sounds exactly like the Game Gear?
ProtoMario very late reply but the game gear was a portable master system and you could by an adapter to play master system carts on it :)
i had game gear with all accessories and this game, the beginning into music was different.....ahhh the memories...that tv tuner made me so popular at school camp when we couldn't stay up in the tv room....hahaha had that one sorted!!!!!!
The boss music is the only difference, its more action-y i guess
robuk1981. So basically like the Gameboy Player for the GameCube?
ProtoMario the game gear and master system Ran the same exact games. You can play master system games on the game gear using the official converter
This. *This* is the best version of 8-bit Sonic 2 to play. It's definitely one of the hardest Sonic games out there, but it pales in comparison to the Game Gear port that did nothing to accommodate that system's lower resolution.
the gameplay was different to genesis version (genesis was named megacrive in europe), it was more similar to mario
this game is much difficult than the 99% game of today... for respect I dont say 100%
Nah. This game was pretty easy to be honest..
***** The Master System version was pretty easy... But the Game Gear's port is almost unfair, due to the small screen...

I remember playing this on the game gear back in the day, had no idea it was a port of the master system sonic game till now.
great game. kids today would probably laugh at this stuff. but I remember at the time it was almost jawdropping... all the top range new console games today might have 'better' graphics but they're not as fun somehow IMO
***** cool...that's good to know!
I grew up on the Genesis version but you are right. Great stuff back in the 90's.
Same here with the guy that started this comment chain
mate when i was a kid this was the best thing in the world. games these days is all KILL KILL KILL . not that fun really.
I am 21 years old by now, but I adore older games more than new ones( I didn't even exist when this one was published).
i remember first playing this game in my 3rd grade class...i was like wow this game is good...bring back memories wacthing this game
....
Awesome game, awesome vid, thanks for uploading!!
I think this is one of the only classic sonic games with a first level that doesn't start in a green hill-ish area.
I think it might be the only one
