@-someone- ; yeah, he does. You can tell he's happy/excited by his perked ears, how he runs fast (he wouldn’t if he didn’t want to) and how high he jumps (again he wouldn’t if he didn’t want to). Also at the beginning he seemed content to get going and go on the course.

My horse wouldn’t willingly jump into water like that😂Whenever we do a small water jump,he lands and instantly start thrashing and bucking 😂 I’d probably be thrown off if he had to do that 😂❤️

I have the opposite problem. The beach I ride on has a lot of rips and stuff in the water, but the second he sees it my horse is off directly into it, jumping over waves and splashing around haha

Would you consider making videos where you talk through your XC ride/ course walk the way you do for your dressage and sj rounds? It'd be really interesting to see how you plan on approaching different questions out there and how you adjust your plan out on course.

My horse acts like I’m a meanie for making him trot around the arena lol. I love my guy but I just wish he had some speed and endurance like an eventer! Any tips for getting a lazy one to have motivation?
Alexandra Clermont yeah I wear spurs and he gets fed a pretty good amount of grain. Its like he has absolutely no motivation. I just want him to want to work but I guess some horses enjoy it more than others.
Sounds like work might be boring for him. Is he only an arena horse? Circles get tiring pretty quickly for horses, who were built to cover large amounts of ground. Try taking him on hacks so he can stimulate his mind and get out of that "ugh arena work I hate this" mindset. I wouldn't recommend more grain-unless he's an athlete who burns the extra energy off easily, he doesn't need it. Grain is a bit like an energy drink for horses. What kind of riding do you do? English or Western? Maybe try some pole work with him to keep him thinking while you ride. You can mess with the distances and striding between the poles so he can't get distracted. Hard to be lazy when you have to think on where to put your feet! There's lots of things you can do in an arena besides circling. Set up an obstacle course of sorts: wooden sheets for him to walk over, haybales to jump, poles, a brightly colored jump (even a low one), a tarp for him to cross, maybe a small liverpool if he's a jumper, etc. And of course a good gallop never hurts! If he's feeling particularly sluggish, take him out to a field and just let him run. We spend so much time collecting and controlling our horses' speed that sometimes we forget that they like to run. Letting the reins out and letting him run every once and awhile is great for both of you. He'll loosen up and have fun, and you probably will too, with an escape from the monotony of arena work. Have fun with him! Horses get bored too :)
Lily Ryan in the past month since I posted the comment I have discovered the speed demon in my pony! I’ve had to keep him from getting strung out while jumping because he’s just become so excited lol. I looked into it and discovered he really does get bored of the same ol jumps and arena I switched things up and jumped out In the jump field and “the laziest horse at the barn” turned into a completely different horse. He’s also jumping twice as high now. It’s probably because he used to be solely a beginner lesson horse and I had to break him out of that mind set. Of being too desensitized to the aids. I didn’t want to switch up his feed because he seems to really enjoy it and I wanted to give it a chance. And I ride English but my pony used to be a western pleasure horse so he’s not necessarily built for jumping but he really does enjoy it and he does the best he can, even if he can’t jump higher than 2 foot, it’s still a heck of an improvement with his newfound endurance and speed. I just needed to have a little patience and understanding that of course my 14.2hh formally beginner western horse was not going to be a Star right away. Takes alottt of work and faith.
Sarah Newton My mare is exactly the same at the moment! She was also a beginner horse and trained for western pleasure, and I’ve noted that she enjoys jumping too! Although I’m suffering from the same problem you were 😨

Amazing job!! You're such a XC inspiration to me! Since I have a old mare who doesn't like jumping much, I can't do much XC and jumping 😔 I am getting a jumping horse next year. Do you have any tips on getting started with jumping? Johnny certainly loves XC though, and he is very good at it!! ❤❤

This is amazing. One at my friends barn we were jumping horse jumps.(It was me and her no horses in the area) My friends makes over the first one , I do too. She jumps the second one, and makes it over , I try and fall flat on my face and lay there laughing.

I worked at this event...these horses move at 40km per hour....its an amazing horse and rider...but I see 374 thumbs down...they must be motorcycle riders....I would like to see some guy on any cycle do this event....you have to have a lot of courage to do eventing...much more difficult than hitting a little golf ball...

When I race in my club on events I do the same thing I say good boy then I pet him/her I bring a lot of horses in my trailer
