the toughest, rawest, bravest, most badass champion of the sport. records dont mean shit when most of the guys youve fought are cans. look at penns resume:
    145: edgar
155: edgar, sherk, sanchez, florian, pulver, gomi, serra, stevenson, ludwig
170: gsp, hughes, serra, nick diaz, macdonald, fitch
above 170: renzo gracie, rodrigo gracie, machida
these guys are KILLERS in those weight classes! and bj beat most of them! bj penn is the epitome of FIGHTER! thank you, bj penn, for all the years of amazing fights!!!

The epitome of a fighter. I mean. Dude. This guy fought from 145 all the way up to 205. Didn't always come in, in the best shape or with the best mentality, but find me another guy in the next 100 years willing to fight literally ANY AND EVERYONE.
GSP (while being a great fighter himself), or Silva (being a grea fighter himself), ain't got two stones in their pocket to make their fight happen. How long did it take May and Pac to get together. You give Penn, 3 minutes notice that he's fighting Velasquez... that dude gon show up ready to throw down. Guaranteed.

For anybody saying that he isnt that old, you have no idea what MMA does to your body. Randy couture was able to do it so old because he didnt start so young. Professional MMA is insanely brutal on the human body and one can only take so much, BJ penn has been fighting for some time now

    • @ShakurasStalker
      @ShakurasStalker 10 лет назад +1

He hasn 't taken that many extreme beatings though, and he's only had 26 fights. BJ Penn had to retire because he wasn't good enough. Great MMA fighter, but not the best. At 36, he doesn't have much left to show in the sport.
Look at the boxer Jake Lamotta. He had around 100 matches and he took some of the worst beatings in the history of the sport, getting absolutely pounded in every match, even the ones he won... he was just a tank that could take damage, get close, and dish it out.
Look at Rampage Jackson. 46 professional fights, 11 losses included and he's been slugged quite a few times in the head.
Look at Anderson Silva. 39 professional fights. He's taken some pretty bad beatings even before Weidman, particularly the pounding he took from Cheater Sonnnen. Still fought very successfully up until the Weidman fights, and now he's been doing amazingly in his sparring matches- we just need to see if he can beat Diaz.

Now dont get me wrong, when i was in highschool yes i smoked weed and i did fine in the wrestling team, but as a top tier athlete weed has to be somewhat of a detriment

Sounds like a couple trying to diminish Penn for maybe money or something. Even if he did hit on this girl extremely hard and was ridiculously thirsty lol That's as far as I could see BJ going. Maybe you can tell me what you think Joey since your a huge fan? It has kept him off some current cards where he would have made a come back...

BJ Penn is such an awesome guy! I know what he means about that nagging feeling about wondering. It's like an itch you gotta scratch. You HAD to do this BJ, you deserve so much credit for trying. You were once a champ and this fight doesn't remove that. Us fighters, inside or outside the UFC are on a path that is different than most. You're really inspiring and you give me some wisdom. I'm 37 and was thinking of doing some amateur fights, but your experience here gives me some wisdom for the road ahead. Keep your head up, man. Barely anyone has the guts to do what you did.

A lot of people say its sad for it to end like this and even the way it ended when he lost his last fight against Ryan Hall. There shouldn't be anything sad about any of his last fights. Dana White said it all. The only statement I see being made when a guy like this goes out, takes a shot, and loses, is that he is a true fighter, he never tried to take the easy or most glorious way out, he just went out fighting.

All pale in his face, taking deep breaths, seeming dissoriontated.. He even walked to the guy who should check him with his shirt on.. He just didn't seem "there".. Might the long layoff have given him "octagon hitters"? He seemed to be very anxious even before Edgar entered the cage!

Martin Eaton He's got more chances of finishing via KO, but if you like at it on paper then Edgar more well-rounded, better stand up, better sub game and has fought more top ranked fighters, imo. I think it would be a hell of a fight!

John Oxford I see what your saying chap, but, Mendes has that freaky cardio and the strength of a dude 3 rimes his size. My main reason for thinking Mendes would woop Edgar though is down to the psychologicals, every time I've seen edgar struggle it's against someone who bullies him in the ring and that's what Mendes does best imo. You make a good point about the on paper argument tbh just I don't think Edgr is as hungry for it as Mendes either, plus, training camps too, can't argue that Mendes doesn't have much better sparring partners at his weight class than Edgar too.

Martin Eaton Strength wise Mendes is a clear favorite. As for cardio I don't think that's an issue, Edgar's gone 5rds on numerous occasions. I see what you're saying about Mendes being able to bully Edgar due to his strength advantage, and I do also see Mendes as the more hungry of the 2.
I think it could go either way tbh, that's why I think it's one of the best match ups in that division. If Mendes gets it then it'll probably be via TKO; and Edgar via decision. He does have better BJJ I think, but Mendes is too strong and savy to get caught by a sub I think.

Only thing BJ threw was his back out when he got out of his old man rocking chair for this fight. Seriously though, BJ WAS one of the greatest, but he's waaaay past his prime now and needs to know when to actually hang it up for good.

He is still the best PFP fighter ever. Wish he never took the last 3 fights.... He was the best, he really should have stayed at 155 the whole time. And he 100% helped the UFC in so many ways. He was the prodigy before the Matt Hughes fights.

For those who don't know, PJ Penn fought Machida in K1, when Machida was weighing 225lbs...put that in perspective in todays MMA world it would never happen, no one at 155 would fight a LHW..no one....in reality there was 50lbs between them 5 inches

This man decided to take a beating to show him he just wasn't good enough to cut it anymore. That is tough in my book. Good luck BJ.

He was the first non Brazilian to win 1st place in the national jiu jitsu competition, earned his black belt in just two years of training, then moved to the ufc and fought the best of the best.

Records are not as big of a deal in MMA as they are in Boxing, BJ Penn was only the second UFC fighter to be a two weight world champion and he fought the top guys in both weight classes in their primes.

I almost cried when he broke down. This guy could've been so much better if he had stayed in the right weight class, with a team that pushed him. If he never left after the Hughes fight he would've been the GOAT. we should've seen the BJ that beat Sherk, Sanchez, Florian, Stevenson, Gomi a lot earlier but he spent all that time dicking around the world fighting at different weight classes. Beating Hughes was almost the worst thing that could've happened to him cuz it gave him the justification to go fight out of his weight
