Fantastic performance - both electrifying and passionate. Korepanova makes the sonata opening movement a thrilling, dark, gorgeous, and deep work - and fills with plenty of special moments, an art often lost amongst pianists, making special moments as opposed to perfection, polish and clarity. The virtuosity is stunning. Her lyricism, very touching and sentimental. It is wonderful to see playing that has a distinct character - and not that which sounds like any number of other pianists. Sections for example at 5:30 onwards are breathtakingly dazzling. But at 6:07 the maturity and patience to create a transition to a completely dark moment in the work, effortlessly done. But at 6:50 or so again the virtuosity returns but now combined with a grand climax starting at 6:58. No, this is not playing that is safe and well mannered. Instead, it is playing absolutely appropriate for one of the last romantic piano composers - one who was quite troubled in self esteem yet incredibly brilliant in his abilities. And for all the writings about Rachmaninoff finding happiness just before writing his Second Piano Concerto - this work is clearly one of the obvious arguments that he had both bright and dark feelings, which musically - in this opening movement he expresses with incredible depth ranging from the build to climax to the ending of absolute tranquility.

Words fail next to such astonishing artistry. What a beautiful piece of music that is overshadowed by his 2nd Sonata. It should be programmed more often. Then again, very few can do justice to this music the way Ms. Korepanova does in this performance.

Yes, it is breathtaking and played with such emotion. Played with great mastery of the score. She plays with the full dynamic range and, unlike many pianists, gets a special sound even at the very soft level.

Marvellous! Having just enjoyed a fine performance from Volodin, i'm even more impressed in some ways by this one. There's an animal, raw emotional quality and rich harmonic awareness here, (helped by a fine recording), allied to structural rigor. Wonderful playing, with just a nuance of criticism that in the heat of passion she sometimes goes thru the limit of her tone. No matter; this reveals Rach 1st sonata yet again as the masterpiece we never understood for decades. The great regret here: where are movements 2&3? I will be listening out for more of this artits.
