Not only technical mastery, but exquisite voicing and counter melody interpretation, and having heard other impressive performances, this Volodin rendition is so musical and brilliant to my ears, much thanks, and number 2 sonata isn’t in the same universe. Previous favorites Lugansky, Kissin,Lisitsa,Trifinov,Chochieva,Sigier.Hard to fathom a finer interpretation, especially live without editing, although perhaps it possibly exists in this current reality(Weissenberg?)

Most enjoyable! Certainly one of the best-played live interpretations available. Volodin, who i've sometimes thunk perfunctory, here makes a virtue of compressing the sprawl of the piece into a logical entity, particularly strong on rythm. This epic work brings out the best in him. Marvellous that Sonata 1 now has so many interpretations available; in my teenage years there was NOTHING! Only now we start to realise its qualities. Thank you for posting this, a great pleasure, also for the well-chosen encore.

IMHO, this first sonata by Rachmaninoff is superior to his second sonata in Bb minor. It's a shame that the first sonata isn't performed or recorded as often as the second.

It's not superior, but it's an incredible work of true art.

@@lucasgust7720 it is superior (!) - broader in scope and Rachmaninoff seems to explore and develop the material to a greater extent and with more comfort.

@@samaritan29, you are talking about technique of composition, and a great work of art is much more than a great command of technique.

@@lucasgust7720 No - im saying the D minor piano sonata is a vast, sprawling work that is neglected because of its length and difficulty, even though it was composed at the peak of the composer's mature years (written along side his 2nd symphony, the Isle of dead, and the 3rd piano concerto). it takes on an emotional impact of unparalleled incomparable force. don't get me wrong, the 2nd sonata is great of course but after a while I don't want to hear it again. Can listen to the 1st again and again and again.

@@lucasgust7720 Agreed, both are beautiful and "superior"! The world would be a poorer place without either of these Sonatas, and I would be happy listening to both, over and over, lost in the beauty of both. (Whether or not the 1st is unjustifiably under-performed or under-appreciated is another matter.)
