    This is very interesting.
    One thing to note: at 33:30 when you connect your FTDI board to Tx and Rx, that will cause issues. RS-232 and UART are not multi-drop - you can't connect more than 2 endpoints together. The Tx line will fight whatever other Tx you have it plugged into. You can monitor the output of one of the lines by connecting that to the Rx though. The FTDI board's Tx must remain disconnected from the other direction. Hopefully this diagram works.

      Huh that is interesting, that explains why I couldn't send messages sometimes using the ftdi board. At one point I noticed that the activity light on the ftdi board was always on and disconnecting the tx line fixed that. I guess I just assumed that if I didn't send something while another device was sending that it would be fine. Good to know though that it is supposed to be only 2 devices on that line!
