    Edit (1/23/24):
At this point in time, the showcase of some of the tools in this video are out-of-date. Most importantly, JP Mining Note hasn't been maintained by Aquafina in quite some time. Please use Arbyste's fork instead, as it fixes many of the bugs that have been introduced over time on the original. I have updated the link in the description, but you may also find it here: arbyste.github.io/jp-mining-note/
Second, while asbplayer setup still generally remains the same, you no longer need to install it as an unpacked extension as it is now available on the Chrome Web Store. If there are any other important changes, please let me know in either TMW or Refold server, my discord is the same as my RUclips name. Thank you!
    Original comment:
If you’re having issues with asbplayer or jp mining note, please join the Refold JP server. The creators of both are in the server, active, and very friendly. It’s easier to troubleshoot stuff on discord than on here, so please join if you need help! Thank you!

Found out a couple of weeks ago that i'll be spending a year in Japan, starting this September. So you and this series popping up is a great help and encouragement. Also good job on the editing, and thanks for recommening themoeway. That site is a great source on learning 'digitally', that i always knew i needed, but didn't know existed, and never would have found otherwise.

Dang how’d you get that sweet opportunity?

    • @Dan-kr9bm
      @Dan-kr9bm Год назад

      @@bobbywhite5319 Via my university.
Tldr: If you're a student currently or in the future, your university / college might run a exchange programme, or there might be other such opportunities offered elsewhere. The main thing is finding these opportunities, and having a go at them. You might very well get lucky.
My uni runs a programme called 'Global Exchange' in cooperation with its foreign partnering universities, that aren't included in other programmes like Erasmus for intra-european exchanges. Basically they agree on a certain number of students to be recommended by my home university to the foreign one. They get to study at the university in question, and have their tuition waived.
So for instance, there are seven japanese universities that my uni has partnership agreements with. Afaik the usual 'allotment' for these is 24 months for two people (so a year each). This means that my uni sends around a dozen students per semester to Japan. I'm pretty sure that for universities in all other countries it's usually 6 months (1 semester) per person.
So i first applied for the programme at my home university. They accept my application (this was my second attempt), and offered me a slot at a specific university (you're able to list three universities in your application). I in turn accepted the offer, and then applied at the uni in question with paperwork that was sent to the person that's responsible for the programme at my uni. Of course you can always try to 'independently' apply at foreign universities. The programme's advantage is that the tuition is waived, and the actual application is easier, since my uni more or less vouches for my suitability, and facilitates the actual application process.
! This is important for anyone interested in doing something similar:
I'm writing all this to encourage others to do their best at 'fulfilling their dreams' or whatever you want to call it. I'm not a genius by any means, i'm a pretty run-of-the-mill, low-effort student actually. During the pandemic i just realized that sometimes, you have to force your own luck. I've played with the thought of 'going to Japan' in some fashion for a while. So when i cought wind of that programme, i just 'took the chance' (there's no risk involved in the first place). And when i didn't get accepted, i tried again. I do think i'm extremly lucky, and i'm anxious, excited, a bit scared and everything in between. In some way i tried to convince myself that i don't deserve this, i tend to not value myself very highly. But some friends i made at uni convinced me that i deserve this as much as anyone, and so does anyone else that might read this. I guess this is why i ended up writing this instead of an assignment thats due next week. The pandemic hit me in my stomach right when i was starting to see some 'personal improvement'. But i picked myself up, and i now lunge at every opportunity i get, including this one. So, i want you all to do the same. It pays off. I wish you the very best.

Most people think it is the language that is frustrating when in reality most of the time it is your methods that is frustrating, My native Language is Arabic and I've learned 3 languages in addition to my native (yes I studied my native, because it is difficult and it has many versions and dialects) also English, Spanish, and Japanese. And I can tell you that I REALLY enjoyed the process of every language and the reason for this is I tried my best to first build a learning habit daily (most people are excited in the beginning they spend hours until they burnout, where I think in the beginning you should only focus on building a habit of daily learning even if it is 20 minutes until you feel comfortable, after that you can increase it, me personally now I spend 4-5 hours learning while in the beginning it was 1 hour daily just to fit it in my daily life) another thing is the obsession with basics many people get stuck in this level (You do not have to master basics even with kana learn it once and move on while listening and reading eventually it will be something that you do not think about, I hate it when people keep writing the same letter 20 times thinking it is helping them) and the most important piece of advice is please ENJOY that's it, do not look for the perfect method and analyzing every technique, just enjoy man and think about the amazing content you will consume when you develop a good understanding of the language :)

i always look at sentence mining to be eh
and what i mean by sentence mining is the act of having a card being made with "highquality" cards that is explained by themoeway
i did my fair share of anki and quite frankly i never want to do it again. then how do you memorize it how you may ask?
thank god immersion kit exist. second, i rather understand the sentence than having the words prememoriezed, if you have a word pre memorized but don't really understand the complicated sentence in which the main character is explaining a plot point then it doesn't really matter.
and plus i find that you dont have to know each and every word, there are a bunch of time where i was immersing which i can intuitively understand what the character is feeling or what they say based on their expression, and context.
and this is something that im sure matt talks about, put specifically by knowing a certain context, and situation, your almost guaranteed to know the options characters word of choice characters may use and use that to understand. and if you watched the show before, you will already have known or understand what the character will have to say.
in this day and age it's so easy have an external memory that you dont really have to memorize, you have chatgpt where you can tell it to give you examples, explain it, or use certain situations, you have yomichan. but dont confuse memorizing with internalizing. internalizing can happen without necessarily memorizing. i believe this is one of the core concept of immersion to begin with
as you immerse, sometimes a word pops out at you, and you notice is until it no longer flies by your head, you will catch it every time.
then i believe you can catch up and do anki cards, at this point you can hear the sentence and know what the sentence is about but not necessarily the word but you know like a couple of words cause you catch it often then when you look up the definition, or try to memorize it, it sticks really easily. you are like OHHH that's what i means, ive come across this word so many times not i 100% get it.
disclaimer ive done jo mako prebuilt decks and have done core decks, so no doubt i have already have core knowledge, though i didnt fully commit anyways but the situations i've mentioned are real and does not play a small part in my learning, i am also learning Japanese at the casual to the max, and i procrastinate a lot but i hope that this can help you guys learn Japanese much better

The current stance on mobile usage is that it's not "officially supported", meaning that although it should work, I wouldn't recommend it yet unless you really want to review on mobile. There are a good number of things that I'm not personally happy with, such as the layout, lack of certain features (primarily kanji hover and word indicators), and some performance issues, all adding up to a potentially sub-par experience. Not sure if this is an issue with it being a streamed video and not directly downloaded. Would appreciate any help.

i rly like jp mining note for its flexibility, but that flexibility does admittedly come at the cost of a more complicated setup, you can check the alternatives here (aquafina-water-bottle.github.io/jp-mining-note/alternatives/), the asbplayer setup should be the same as long as you can account for the different field names

Would writing out every single unknown word from a movie/series and throwing it into a deck for reviewing with all the vectors enabled (meaning, typing, kana -> kanji, kanji -> kana) also considered sentence mining. Well, the method I use, though, is kinda retrograde-ish, since all that I have is a Notepad .txt file, a video of an anime episode (with both English and Japanese subs, even though English is not my mother tongue and not even my second language, but whatever), several dictionaries opened at once (to copy the definitions in my mother tongue) and an automated deck system that allows my add the vocabulary cards with comments to them and then study them over and over again. The idea is kinda the same, but the approach is definitely more オッサンくさい.

    • @mikuminou

Could this be a way to learn the Kana or written script? Rather than get hung up on trying to pre memorize all of it? Maybe pick out short phrases or single words. At first , learn how they're spelled and also learned the characters to spell them at the same time?

@@mikuminou Thanks for the help! To prevent the creation of duplicates, I later remapped my old cards and they were orange which was expected. Also, some of the furigana was double stacked because of formatting redundnacies, but it was pretty tolerable.
However, the odd thing was when I made new jp-mining-note cards, sometimes the info circle would be red, mostly orange even for the new cards. I think it was due to changing the name of the card from "Mining Card" to "JP Mining", but I'm not sure. So I scrapped the remapped deck and decided to keep my old mining cards seperate
Anyways, the neat thing with Yomichan is that it can also detect duplicates across collections or decks, so I got to keep my old format of cards for nostalgia and posterity!

I think if you have a decent amount of knowledge of the Japanese language you can get some understanding by watching anime, but if you start from 0, you might pick up phrases but to reach anything beyond that you'll have to learn the old-fashioned way. You can't just cut out the hard work.
