That's looking like a very happy and lovely tree! Good work as usual. Can you explain why you chose to use cut paste rather than your usual lac balsam to cover that carving?
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio Thank you, that makes a lot of sense. It's little bits of experience and wisdom like that which is why I watch your videos, even on things I'm already familiar with, or don't expect to need to know. I never know what little gems might be hidden in them.
Looking great. I have a large trident maple that I’m trying to rebuild the top half due to branch loss before my care. Would defoliation help with back budding in areas I’m not currently getting any buds. Currently just feeding heavy and cutting back the growth where I don’t need it.
Amazing to see. Can I ask if an acer palmatum (garnet) would be treated the same? I have a garden grown from tiny supermarket plant, I'd liked to try and make something of. I will aim to repot in very early spring. Thanks. Jane
I have tried defoliation several times, and every time the new flush of leaves has the centre shaft (the middle finger) of each leaf abnormally elongated more than double the length of the original leaves. The result is rather grotesque, and had dissuaded me from defoliation. Is this a common result, and can it be avoided ?

I saw this maple yesterday in person. This video does not do it justice! It's absolutely beautiful.
Best bonsai channel on youtube. Thank you.

Great work and AMAZING plant. I've done a partial Defoliation on my Quercus Suber 2 weeks ago and now it's exploding!
Again fantastic video Corin, thanks for the information on how to improve our Maples.👍
Another awesome video Corin👊🏻

Wow what an amazing tree how old is it?
What a tree "WOW" 👏
Could you update on how the tree looks now with the new growth?
From Syria with love

Just because it was a larger cut, I used cutpaste so I could see how quick it was rolling over
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio Thank you, that makes a lot of sense.

Hi Corin if you don't have cut paste what alternative can you use for the tree to heal over
Nice
If possible, show us the tree in leaves again in some time, thanks for the video.
Yes of course in :4 weeks or so

Currently just feeding heavy and cutting back the growth where I don’t need it.
Id stick to feeding it a lot, and cutting back the stronger areas as it grows.

The Dissectum maples don't take too well to being leaf cut, but you can trim it as a bonsai.
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio thank you for the advice. Would I need to wait to trim / take off some branches in winter or spring?
Should I defoliate my JMs that are only 3-4 years old I wonder? Great vid thank you.
I wouldn’t. I would let them put their energy into growing
Can you give a shout out to Tony from Tony’s Bonsai. He is terminally I’ll and I know it will make his last days hearing this shout out 👍❤
Yeah will do, when we next record a video, Hes a nice bloke sorry to hear the bad news about his health.
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio 🙏
So will a deshojo give back its spring colour back if defoliated if now?
Yes. New leaves will be bright red
Do you fertilize after removing all of the leaves?
No, wait till they are fully out again, if you feed too quickly, you'll just get large leaves again

did you defoliate and then feed ? this would encourage large leaves again ?
👍👌🙂
