      _Gale and Walter lived happily together after moving to a small town amidst the subtle Canadian terrain of north western Washington, where they spent their time brewing new blends and making up for the little time Walter had left to live. Walter White passed away at the age of 55, much longer than his original diagnosis at the age of 50 allowed for. His partner, Gale, remarks that “In the end, it doesn’t even matter [what we both did before the coffee], and I’m just grateful I could spend a portion of my life with Walt. I know that Heisenberg died the day he tasted my coffee, and Walter was forever grateful for that. Sometimes I wonder whether it was the love of coffee, or the love of man that brought us together, but such thoughts are trivial when you know the others true feelings. It goes beyond words.”_

    This is the most remarkable thing about this series. It just gets better and better, right up to the final episode. I've never watched a series since that was like this. Most shows start out strong, then peter out and kind of trudge along to the finale, but not Breaking Bad. At the beginning, I was interested just enough to watch the first 3 or 4 episodes, but then it just started to grow on me. By the last show, I was saying this was maybe the best show on TV, ever. BCS has better characters and cinematography but the plotting is sloppy at times (this shows more in the cartel storyline in the last couple of seasons) and the pacing is wonky, especially earlier on. Breaking Bad also has a few plot issues but I don’t think they do as much harm to the show as BCS.

    Podcast Notes
    Guests: John Shiban [episode writer & director]; Dave Porter [Composer]; Thomas Golubic [Music Producer]
    1. John loves & has made scary movies, & this whole season has been like a western, so he combined the two to make a mini horror movie for the cold open. He wanted to steal the opening shot of The Searchers (on a dark door that opens to reveal the West & we walk out with a character)...also borrows from The Wizard of Oz. It was shot at the Tamaya Indian Reservation, and the people of the Tamaya Nation were awesome. They gave certificates of appreciation to all the BB folks
    2. The shrill whistles we hear in the Cousins’ music are from a whistle instrument based on the knowledge that still exists of Aztec instruments - they’re called War Whistles & were designed for the battlefield, to frighten opponents. Dave Porter has a friend in Mexico who is a percussionist who has many cool instruments such as these.
    3. Gale [David Costabile] is so lovable, & has an innocence & sweetness, much like the music. Part of the tragedy is we love Jesse but here’s a character that is sort of the perfect partner for Walt where Jesse isn’t. David is a friend of writer Sam Catlin, & his was the first tape John had seen. Another writer had been watching Damages, on which he plays a mean character, and then during the episode, a commercial popped up with the same actor playing a dad, and he fell for him, too. He’s great to work with & has a huge range.
    4. Act 1 had been planned to start with a scene of Hank catching up with his boss & wanting him to sign a warrant to put a wiretap on Jesse, as a way to show he’s obsessed with the case & it’s starting to get noticed. It was cut for time & bc it wasn’t necessary for the audience to get that, though it helped the actors to know where he was mentally.
    5. They talked about the death of the RV like it was a third partner to Jesse & Walt and a character on the show, and they made Jesse & Walt watching it sound like mourners at a funeral
    6. If you didn’t recognize the scrap yard owner? He’s been in a million things, but you might know him best as the actor who played the Kramer character on the tv show they were making on Seinfeld

    I liked how the Walt-Gale lab scene caught them off guard because it was so cheerful and artistically made. That's one of the many reasons why I loved Breaking Bad. Here, you have these people engaged in cooking what we know to be an obscure and terrible drug, and breaking the law, and yet they were honest about how Walt (and Gale) loved to be chemists and cook it. The contrast is brilliant, unexpected, and artful. The music playing just enhances the humor. And the coffee scene is truly hilarious and unexpected.

    Addicts aren’t ‘consenting adults’. Addiction overwhelms the will, which is why people can’t just will themselves to stop.
    People like Walt, Gale, Gus, Jesse profit off the terrible addiction and ruined lives of other people. Addicts are their most loyal customers.
    Children suffer terribly due to their parents’ addiction, and society at large suffers due to all the crime committed by addicts to support their habit (violent and otherwise), not to mention all the family breakdown and destruction of individual lives.

    First time I saw this episode, was the first time in the show my jaw dropped since early in season 2, when Hank showed up at the RV bc I thought there was no way they were getting out of it. I thought they were definitely caught and had no idea how they could get out. I actually thought they might just go totally crazy and rev it up and run his car over, which would be even a worse felony it seems.
    I thought Breaking Bad is either a show that you "get" or you don't, and for me, it was hitting all the right notes. Amazingly, I discovered that most people felt the same way, along with critics....It's slow at times, but it almost always stays interesting and you can still feel tension building even when nothing much is happening, which, for a long tv show, is really rare. I think the stylization of the way they shoot their scenes and the way they always end their episodes on an organic-to-the-story (not forced for the sake of it) cliffhanger had a lot to do with it.

    • @spackle9999
      @spackle9999 5 лет назад

      I'm sure they thought about that. But how is an RV gonna get away? It just would've been a police pursuit they couldn't win. Jesse would eventually get caught and they would recover the ditched RV even if Walter and Jesse managed to escape.

    • @ghenry4513
      @ghenry4513 5 лет назад +2

      @@spackle9999 - They wouldn't get away. They'd catch the RV, but maybe Walt would somehow be able to get out of it before they caught Jesse. They'd have a head start after slamming through Hank's car; maybe Walt jumps out at some point or when Jesse finally pulls over somewhere, Walt can escape at the right visual angle or something.
      But you missed the point. The point isn't to rewrite the show, but to realize that in that moment, it was hard to imagine how they would be able to get out of that. And that is the end of the story.

    The RV "Crystal Ship" was stolen, so Hank easily could have called the local Police Department to immediately impound it from that business. Hank was not thinking clearly, that's also how he got outplayed by Saul... Once Hank found that RV he should have had it impounded, then legally searched. But Hank is trying to be a one man band on this case.

    I love how much your view on characters can change in this show, as you get to know them more and their actions reveal more about who they are, or how it alters them. Hank started as a total "man's man," all bluster and bravado. Big talk, overtly masculine, center of attention, etc. Kind of an asshole almost! But you begin to see that this is a front he puts up to hide his insecurities, and that barrier starts to get cracks in with all of the stuff he gets put through. His character is a really interesting examination of toxic masculinity in some ways.

      There is NOTHING "toxic" about being masculine. That is brainwashed propaganda pushed upon society, in effort to manipulate the population. There are many benefits to being mascine. Just as there are benefits from being feminine. It takes BITH to make the world go round! Extinguish either, will lead to the extinction of humans. So stop buying the bs. And stop spreading it.

      John Smith Toxic masculinity is the societal idea that a man must act like a man as society defines, and the behavior that results. So, Hank having complex emotions and dealing with PTSD, but being unable to outwardly show that for fear of being seen as less of a man, and that having incredibly negative effects on his career and mental health, is a pretty prime example of the idea of toxic masculinity. Masculinity itself isn’t toxic, but toxic masculinity describes a very specific form of gendered behavior that can exist on a systemic/societal level.
