Many of these games still look beautiful in 2019. The designs are incredible. The characters and enviroments looks so interesting. Its like when you see a character for the first time you immediately know what kind of character it is. Also as the NEO GEO never aspired for "realistic" designs many games have more beautiful colors than many current era games have. Many games which was released years after these games looks dated now while the NEO GEO ones have this timeless 2D look.
I just learned about this console and im amazed. Can't believe this came out in 1990. The games look amazing, I mean, most of them look absolutely incredible. Amazing animations and pixel art. And sound. If I discovered this back in the day I would go crazy, but I could never afford it xD.
Man... all the games are fun, unfortunally this console was so expensive here in Brazil that everyone pratically skipped him after the 16 bits generation and went directly onto Psx, Saturn or N64 and only knew Neo-Geo from Arcades where they were a true hit here !
One of the best consoles ever made... For the people saying " it's only fighting games ", it was the objective of the console from the beginning, bringing arcade fighting / shmups to a niche market. And seriously, games like Kof, Fatal fury, Samurai Showdown, last blade, metal slug... ( and many more ) are still played today by many people online on emulators and others... they are the top of 2d fighting and will stay that way.
Still, with all that scaling power and with large sprites, I'm surprised there weren't more attempts at super-scaler type games. I think I saw a single Hang-On clone and that was it... I wonder what the system might have been capable of.
To people who are sceptical about Neo Geo, Play PGA tour golf on the mega drive/genesis then play Neo turf masters. This system was on a whole new level until the PlayStation and Saturn arrived. It was the master of 2D in its time and I appreciate it's quality.
Excellent video and a fantastic view of this amazing console. I really appreciate the fact that the box cover and details are visible at all times. Makes this video so much more useful, interesting and much better quality than almost all the other game collection game play videos out there. Thanks for the hard work
Thank you for this awesome project! Had no idea the King of Fighters 2000 was never released for AES in the US. It is perhaps not the best KOF game, but it certainly is my most favorite.
Yes KOF 2000 was released in the US for AES under "Neo Freak" after SNK went bankrupt they bought the AES PCB boards and shells and packaged them for the US market. After some controversy on the "legitimacy" of these US copies the reformed SNK had to make a public press statement that they were indeed sanctioned by SNK (during bankruptcy) to make them for the US market.
I was just at a Retro Gaming Convention on Long Island, and they had an original Neo Geo console setup for anyone to play. It's amazing how large those cartridges were; compared to everything else on the market. The console was like $1000 alone, and each cartridge was like $100 or more; when it was first released.
i did a rough quick estimate of what it would cost to get a full neo geo collection and it was over 100k. Such a crazy collection but man it would be cool to have some of those games. You'd feel like a king playing your neo geo aes carts.
I had most of the games mentioned. It’s ridiculous. I was always worried about damaging them when I played them and the value depreciating. Sold them all for a small fortune and bought a MVS cabinet. Haven’t looked back since
John Hancock has all of them. Rich guy seems to have eveey video game and console ever created. Some of his neo geo games costed him over 30-40,000 dollars
Beautiful graphics for almost all of the games....but the box cover art for the games are top notch. They are inspired by anime and movie posters,SNES and Sega Genesis box cover art for their games pale in comparison. They make dope ass posters that you should hang on the wall in your den.
Great video, but I know exactly why I didn’t really desire the Neo Geo. Loved King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown, but I could easily miss most of the rest. I also loved the visuals and physics of the best 3D Arcade games, starting with Hard Drivin’ and moving on to Virtua Racing and the rest of the Sega games. No driving games on Neo Geo either. Awesome system, but it can stay in the Arcades from my perspective. It’s also all playable on MAME and in compilations. Really glad to watch this video - thanks for making it!
The storage space was in megabits. So 600 megabits would equal about 75 megabytes. That's about one-tenth of a CD, and it's impressive what SNK could do with it.
king of fighters 2003 was the highest one at 716 megabits, the others (Metal Slug 3 and 5, Samurai Shodown 5 and SamSho 5 SPECIAL, a few others) topped out at 708 megabits. i've always wondered why Metal Slug 4 was only 553 megs, i guess the remaining 155 megs was not enough space to have the music in Stereo...
Shoe3003 MS4 did a lot of assets recycling, graphics wise it's the worst and most repetitive Metal Slug so far. Also its development cycle was sort of short, so the game suffered greatly in that regard (and didn't take as much space, because the game lacks a lot of variety).
Mark Of The Wolves and KOF 2k / Best 2D fighting games ever !! Metal Slug 3 / Best 2D horizontal Shooter ever !! Neo Turf Master / My favorite NEOGEO game :)
@Blackstone Holy shit. Anyways having played A LOT of Neo Geo games on Emulator i can now say it was worth the money. just for the King of Fighters Games and the Metal Slug Games.
@Blackstone Yeah IT REALLY brought the Arcade EXP Home but it was soo goddamn expensive. I only learned about its existence in 2006. during that year i started to Collect all the King of Fighters Games and Last Blade and Garou for the Dreamcast. Each cost 50 $ but i regret nothing. I hear SNK wants to release a Neo Geo Mini with 30 Games on RUMOUR. I would pay 100 $ for that.
Great hardware, the neo geo was so ahead of the other consoles at the time, it was like having a multi game arcade at home! But from this video alone you could clearly see why it never really took off (besides the price point)... no platformer, no RPG, when all the other consoles had at least one iconic character, neo geo marketing was only about the bits
You know what... After all, Neo Geo wasn't worth it. I remember when we were kids, Neo Geo was that special, super-powerful, untouchable expensive console that no kid in school ever had. There was just one piece in the local video game store, and every time you visited, you just stared the box inside the locked display case box. Then you bought your SNES cartridge of the month and went home, hoping that one day your parents will win the lottery and come back to buy you that one Neo Geo console and all the 10 games available. But after all those years, I realized that the Neo Geo games were nothing special, gameplay-wise, they just had good graphics. And all of them lacked the depth and complex story of SNES and sega games of the 16-bit era. They were just made with the 15min-visit-on the-arcade mentality in mind. When finally they became free through emulators, I tried the games one after the other, but I end up closing them within the first 2-3 minutes. Yet, I still play and enjoy super Mario world, super metroid ,contra, and even 8-bit games like Castlevania, Super Mario 3 and faxanadu.
Great thoughts, and I completely agree. Neo Geo wasn't worth the high cost. Graphics are barely better than SNES/Genesis and at $200 per game and mostly 1 on 1 fighters this system just wasn't a good value. I'd much rather have the memories, variety and volume of 16 bit era games I had than a Neo Geo and 4 fighting games and my parents $2,000 in the hole and not willing to buy me more stuff.
Yes but with the cart size and power, could you imagine if they made these type games and it was priced even just a notch higher than the rest instead of a single game costing more than your whole console
"I played Neo Geo games for a couple of minutes and decided they're bad" Yeah because you can totally judge a game from ~2 minutes of play..... Games like the Metal Slug series hold up great today and have tons of charm, more charm and objectively better gameplay AND music than almost anything on the SNES for example. The sprite animation quality is still considerably better than most 2D games today. And just because a game lacks "complex story" absolutely does not mean it's lacking depth. The depth is in the gameplay, you know, the thing that actually matters? But being as you essentially didn't even really play each game, you wouldn't have any idea about any of this. Utterly invalid comment.
I've always found it really weird that Bust-a-Move (Puzzle Bobble) never released for the home system. It was one of the most popular games...every stinking arcade had it installed.
SNK was the king of Fighting games, but the game library from NeoGeo was very limitaded. For arcade fans, it is the holy grail. For a person who only want to play different type of games, it isn't that good.
Im so happt you can get it all on an everdrive and still play it on the original console (just the console and arcade stick in itself is so cool looking)
A Neo Geo fucked itself in the ass with the ridiculously high price for the machine and the games. It was the console everyone wanted to get and it had the games everyone was playing at the arcades, but at those prices it was prohibiting. Such a shame cause it was so far ahead of the competition it was ridiculous.Especially when compared to Nintendo and Sega.Even PlayStation. Oh well...
They have the power to make amazing action games like Top Hunter, Metal Slug, and Shock Troopers. But sadly we aren't seeing more of it. I suppose the lack of third party developers led SNK to just did what they do best: chasing beat'em up and fighting game craze. Just imagine if some big names like Capcom or Konami making games for the system.
So.... how do we play these games? Any emulators that we can download? Most NEOGEO games are arcade based and using the MAME app is either a hit or miss... any suggestions?
Most of this games that you said are for NeoGeo MVS (Arcade version) and not NeoGeo AES (Home Version) which the video is about. And some of it are unlicensed games.
Big Tournament Golf is just Neo Turf Masters. Just depends on the region for what name it goes under, and he did represent the game in this list under Neo Turf Masters.
Ok if you think the graphics look amazing...put on headphones! The audio is on a NEXT LEVEL for that era!
You had to be rich to own this console & its games back then. And you gotta be even richer now to collect these vintage games.

Awesome system, but it can stay in the Arcades from my perspective. It’s also all playable on MAME and in compilations.
Really glad to watch this video - thanks for making it!
Can't get over the graphics on these games well in front of its time
First seeing the neo geo around 1991 it was amazing. Seeing kof 94 was also crazy to me the first time.
This is just too badass
Amazing how this console has big ass cartridges..
I love how 89% Was Just Metal Slug, King Of Fighters and Other Fighting games. An 1% was Action RPGs like Crossed Swords or Super spy!
Best 2D console ever
great console just so damn expensive
@DuraGigi
Just as expensive as the PS 3 was day 1.
@Blackstone
Holy shit. Anyways having played A LOT of Neo Geo games on Emulator i can now say it was worth the money. just for the King of Fighters Games and the Metal Slug Games.
@Blackstone
Yeah IT REALLY brought the Arcade EXP Home but it was soo goddamn expensive.
They went for "Arcade-perfect" with this system and it was more of a niche product rather than mass-market.

Excelente video, abrazo grande desde Florida Uruguay
Great hardware, the neo geo was so ahead of the other consoles at the time, it was like having a multi game arcade at home!
But from this video alone you could clearly see why it never really took off (besides the price point)... no platformer, no RPG, when all the other consoles had at least one iconic character, neo geo marketing was only about the bits
@Blob B I think he meant no mascot, like Mario or Sonic, not just platformers per say
Small typo at 12:20: Rage of the Dragons was a 2002 release, not 1992 as it says in the video.
it's true :)
Expensive but a very cool console!!! Incredible!
Nice console and advanced graphics for it's time. Too many fighter games in the library though
How many fighting games do you want ?
Neo geo: Yes.
amazing presentation thank you for it! I have it saved so I can write down the names of the games I still need
Ou shit, thanks bro I just found blue's journey a great game from my childhood. I'm gona cry.
Wow!👍👍 NeoGeo❤💖
Very Nice Classic Games💙💚
Thank you 🌿🌷🌾🌻

Thank You 4 your heArtwork in putting these memories together
Despite it shortcomings, Neo Geo offered great library of games.
Soon 2020 Super Baseball becomes a reality.
2020 is already here believe it or not. But I haven't seen robot baseball yet. Hopefully in the 2030s or the 2040s at least.
I was thinking the same. Great graphics, but hardly worth the price of admission. And I say that as a fan of arcade games.
Yes but with the cart size and power, could you imagine if they made these type games and it was priced even just a notch higher than the rest instead of a single game costing more than your whole console
"I played Neo Geo games for a couple of minutes and decided they're bad"
Yeah because you can totally judge a game from ~2 minutes of play.....
@@NoClipMode Riquinho cagão.
1991 was a busy year for snk
I'm glad that the better games were on the neo geo mini. Because there's no way i would spend over $1000 for a complete set to connect to a TV.
14:59 - GameFAQs says Shin-Oh-Ken had a 1996 US release as "Ragnagard."
who gives a fuck?
Maybe in Arcades but the release for the AES was definitely Japan only.
12:15 Rage of the Dragons came out in 2002 not 1992
No wonder it looked so new! 😂
True, those grapichs were too good for 1992. :)
BEST conslle of all time , NO contest !
It's not
Really not, their 16 bits counterparts are better for example.
@@elianandres4326 Yeah, people who cant afford a Neo Geo always say that to make themselves feel better.
Neo Geo AES was released in Europe in June 1991, whould put Neo Geo AES library All games(North America/Europe/Japan)
Neo Geo AES was released in Japan in April 26, 1990, in North America in August 22, 1990 and in Europe in June 1991
I've always found it really weird that Bust-a-Move (Puzzle Bobble) never released for the home system.
It was one of the most popular games...every stinking arcade had it installed.
EXCELLENT SUMMARY VID
golden years... miss 90s
SNK was the king of Fighting games, but the game library from NeoGeo was very limitaded. For arcade fans, it is the holy grail. For a person who only want to play different type of games, it isn't that good.
Well said.
Im so happt you can get it all on an everdrive and still play it on the original console (just the console and arcade stick in itself is so cool looking)
The mythical beast from the East, that not me or any of my broke pals could afford as kids
Amazing but I think you're missing many games like Neo Bomberman and Breakers Revenge also isn't that Kabuki Klash at 17:13 ?
Also power drive rally and a few shooters.
3 Count Bout looks and sounds so ace ...
The NeoGeo arcade project pleaaaaaseeeee!
Nice video~
Thanks bro! :-)
All HAIL The Legend of NEO GEO..Let's FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh well...
i didnt see neo drift out - new technology in this video. that was one of my favorites
Neo Drift Out did not have an AES release.
Neogeo cd
Thank you so much!
How come that prehistoric isle 2 game wasn't on here? Am I missing something?
Its on MVS only
@@VGC-cc4xt ahh cheers boss.
Very nice graphics
They have the power to make amazing action games like Top Hunter, Metal Slug, and Shock Troopers. But sadly we aren't seeing more of it.
I suppose the lack of third party developers led SNK to just did what they do best: chasing beat'em up and fighting game craze. Just imagine if some big names like Capcom or Konami making games for the system.
NeoGeo, the Street Fighter clones machine.
The King of Fighters , 97, 98 and 99 are muuch better games then Super Street Fighter II just wanted to get that out there
They sure got their money's worth out of that fighting game engine.
It’s the year 2021, and I’m still waiting to see robots playing major league baseball 😒
This console is much more powerful then the SNES
I wonder how they did their pixel art (they must have treced over hand drawn cartoons)
draw by hand, scan into computer, overlay a grid and automate converting each square into a colored pixel.
*Já tem no canal os jogos do Neo Geo CD?*
I wish they would bring Samurai shodown back. SNK just needs to give it to Arc system works.
Good news, a new one was recently announced
You should be happy about guilty gear joining the game
best arcade games
You could have done a video with all the MVS games too.
Miss the past a lot
Imagine buying 5 ps5 pro at once thats what this was like I never know anyone who had even seen one let alone play or own it
whoa,,,,gemsssssss
So.... how do we play these games?
Any emulators that we can download?
Most NEOGEO games are arcade based and using the MAME app is either a hit or miss... any suggestions?
A few games are missing, Neo Mr. Do, Nightmare In The Dark, Ironclad,
12:14 rage of dragons is 2002 not 1992
And 112 of them are fighting games 🤣
Hadooken in every fucking game)
how did you get white blood in Samurai Shodown 5 SPECIAL? i thought the blood was always red, regardless of the region setting...
Does ir contain the metal slug anthology? ( x to 6)? Thanks
Yes 08:43
Makes me wonder why there wasn't a SSF2 or CE ported to this console?
Only ever saw it in magazines. Nobody I knew had one. Still amazing though
Only 117 games, and most of them are fighting games which not a whole lot of people play today
This system is amazing if you love arcade games. I can't stand RPG's and love fast arcade action so this system is amazing to me
@@tails7605 Would you take the time to learn the moves and combos of every old and obscure fighting game though?
Metal Slug is the best SNK game ever made!!
Metal Slug is the best game ever made!!
*fixed that for you
@@andy5178 haha true! which one is your favorite andy? I like #2 the best!

Daniel Castro the first was exclusive mvs
missing bang bead, power spikes 2, pleasure goal 5 on 5 mini soccer, neo drift out, neo bomberman, hoops 96, captain tomaday, super dodge ball, big tournament golf, prehistorik isle 2, zupapa!, zed blade, tecmo world soccer 96, strikers 1945+, shock troopers, puzzle d pon, puzzle bobble, money puzzle exchanger, neo mr do!, nightmare in the dark, pochi and nyaa, pop'n bounce, fight fever, ganryu, goal! goal! goal!, gururin, battle flip shot.
No samurai rpg
@@Sandro-tf9vr It was a Neo Geo CD exclusive.
Is this 90% fighting console?))
Arcade machine
Back in the days, which ever kid have Neo Geo AES, would consider rich kid, because those carts are expensive as hell 😅
I've never seen a kid w a real arcade in their home in the 80s or 90s except on Silver Spoons.
Neo Geo had best fighting games
What about Breakers Revenge? Was that just arcade release?
I feel how this console very, very understted >< but not was bad
