I was 17 when I bought a Puma Hunters Pal. I paid $20 for it. I had worked all day and made $25. I knew the knife at a local gun store. I paid for it and went home. My father knew how much I made that day and asked what was I going to do with the money. I showed him my new knife. He had a very negative opinion of my buying an expensive knife. We'll I took the criticism like yesterday's breakfast. I forgot about it. I'm 70 now and I still have my Hunters Pal. Best purchase ever. I own many Pumas but the first is still the best. 😅
This knife was developed by Walter Frevert… a famous German ‘förster’ who was a gamekeeper in some of Germany most famous red deer habitats… for example, during ww2 he was one of the gamekeepers for Hermann Göring in a nature reserve Rominter Heide. Walter Frevert designed a lot of Puma knives, for hunting purposes like the ‘Waidblatt’ ‘Waidbesteck’ and puma 995, 959 etc… they are still very much used here in Europe, and still very popular! The early models -like the one you have- are made out of ‘German Steel’ (which is a 440B steel) and Sambar deerhorn handles…. Very nice knife indeed! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Bought one of those back in1965 when I was in high school. Great little knife. Still Have mine. I think I bought Mine after reading about Howard Hill. Thanks for highlighting this knife.
It’s very similar to the traditional Kephart knife given the flat grind and the slight belly in the blade. The blade design lends itsel to very efficient cutting whether it’s a patch or a feather stick. The Kephart was designed specifically for camp use and game processing.
Is that a knife made in Solingen Germany? The Solingen made knives are my favorite. I have many of that brand/make of differing styles. Most with the stag handles like yours.. Thanks for that review of your favorite patch knife and also that of Howard Hill's. Tried to see the maker's stamp on it but couldn't. First one bought in the middle fifties. Value them highly up to today. Thanks again.
Well I’ll be darned, that reminds me, I have a White Hunter I bought over 50 years ago! Been in my safe for the last 35 or so. Tough knife, holds a pretty decent edge but just a bit heavy. Appreciate the memory jar!
I believe the Puma Hunter was actually Fred Bears kit knife. Earlier kits were done with the Marbles knives, then a Western brand, and it was replaced with the Puma Hunter. Howard Hill carried a small, pen style folding knife, that he used to skin and clean game. There was a picture of him holding it, on a deer hunt in Pennsylvania. Have a,great day! Steve
I have my dad’s Puma from the 60’s. He gutted his first deer with it in Maine and I did 30+ years later. I’m waiting for my sons to get one! Their day will come! Best damn knife with an amazing edge!
MANY years ago I loaned a new White Hunter to a friend for a trip to the wilderness. I waited a while to retrieve it. Unfortunately, he had left it in its leather case for the entire time (after use). When removed, we found it covered in rust. After a less than friendly exchange, he agreed to buy me a new replacement. From that experience, we both learned an important lesson about caring for knives. We both ended up with a White Hunter. His, a bit worse (after cleaning) for the wear. The friendship survived.
Jail sentence for having that in a public place without a good reason hear in the UK. Absolutely madness, keep your rights and stay vigilant for the ban it brigade in government.🇬🇧🇺🇲
Most Europeans and anti-gun socialists who love censorship and hate free speech and freedom of religion. It's against the law in Germany, for example , to even BE a Jehovah's Witness. I don't love JW's but today it is them, next year it is Baptists...

😅
My dad was a butcher, so he wasn’t going to get upset whenever one of his kids bought a knife. 😂
Great knives used one for 60 years on everything from Elk to Squirrels. Great balance and so easy to keep sharp with a razor leather strap.
The Puma Hunters Pal was Fred Bear’s favorite hunting knife. I’ve field dressed many whitetail deer with mine.

I remember Howard Hill well, in the 40s there were movies showing his outstanding skills.

Puma Knifes are great. But damn expensive.
Somebody show Hickok the Opinel knife. Great knife. Had one for years
Great knife. I’ve had mine since 1989, it’s a great skinner that’s been used by me extensively. Never go hunting without it.
Thanks for making me aware of this Puma German company, I checked them out and they’ve got some sweet blades I’m definitely interested in.
I've always admired that knife, it was a tad bit more than I wanted to pay. I got a smaller Schrade for a patch knife
Thanks for the memories Hickok45. I wish I still had my Hunters Pal.

If you love that size and blade shape check out the ESEE AGK. It’s just the modern one of them and it’s fantastic.
A case 366 is also a good choice for sure
I have collected Puma knives sence I was 14 and now I'm 74 years old. These are the best fix balde knives made.
72 and same here. My oldest is a 6” Puma Bowie made last quarter of 1967. I also have White Hunter,Outdoor and some folding Puma. Great knives.
My Dad had a hunters pal. He bought it in 1965 . It’s mine now and it’s outlived 3 leather sheaths.
I love the German made Puma knives! I don’t have that model, but would love to get one.
Ive got a case 366 from the 1960s thats alot like this knife but a bit cheaper and i love it

Puma has been around a long long time. Good knives made with German steel & precision. Can't go wrong there sir.
From an eager student, thanks for the lesson!
Back when Schrade Puma and the Buck Vanguard were the ones to have. Have a KOA now, outstanding for the price
Nice blade.
I have had a White Hunter for 25 years but after seeing this video, I like the size of the Hunters Pal more.
Though I was raised using guns since I was 7 years old, I'm more of a knife guy.
That sure is a sweet little knife my brother!!!
THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks great!
Nice knife. How well does it hold an edge? Does it contact the barrel or ball during patch cutting?
I have the same knife Good one
i was waiting for the oh crap but you got it sir nice knife and rifle
I like that muzzle loading box. It looks homemade. Did you make it yourself? I’ll bet there’s a story behind it. Love to hear it!
gorgeous rifle

Beautiful knife.
lol😂 ‘’dry ball’’ I must admit I’ve done it more than once!🤷♂️😔 sayin ‘’PPB’’ over & over in my mind every time I load & it still happens to me😜🤷♂️
I only buy knives made in the USA like Benchmade, Case, Tops, ESSE. I like putting money in Americans pockets.
Can you hit the gong with this knife 😂? haha 😂
Mora kansbol is a great :all rounder"
It sure looks nice from here. I have a few myself and look a lot like some that you have. Are we twins?
Kind of looks like my Uncle Henry knife. My knife, not uncle Henry’s. Don’t have a uncle Henry, just a “Uncle Henry” knife.😄
Howard Hill, now there's a shooter.
Make mine a USA made Schrade Outfitter.
These foreign knives are too hard to sharpen.
Still made. $165.00 on Amazon.
I don't think those are made in Germany. The German ones are marked Solingen and cost quite a bit more.
Can you imagine trying to reload that rifle when the enemy is advancing towards you 😮
Yes. But no thank you.
Better than holding a whole bunch of nothing as the enemy advances.
Always the best👍
What do they cost these days?
No. WorkTuff Gear Knives are #1 everyone knows that 😂👍👍🇺🇸
I HAVE ONE PAID $15. FOR IT GOOD KNIFE.
Lisred for $250 !! Too much for me to spend.
Nice knife, but I prefer to buy American-made whenever I can. I feel Europe is not our friends any more than China is.
The people are ...the government is not 🇺🇲🇬🇧

My very accurate statement about Europeans was deleted by Google because they hate the Truth.
It’s hard to beat German steel, Solongen steel is some of the best steel in the world. I love Puma knives.
