Didn't see it mentioned, but a HUGE difference from any headphones on the market is that Momentum 4 can transfer audio+microphone through the usb-c cabel. On top of that it also charges and have ANC active, so basically turn them into wired headphones with built in microphone noise-cancelling.
@@PassionforSounddoes this firmware update fix the bugs and issues reported on this headphone connectivity issues via bluetooth, turning on and off randomly?
I've not experienced any bugs with the Momentum 4 so I can't say. I do know they use proximity sensors for switching on/off automatically so maybe that's confused some people? I'm not sure.
Nice review Lachlan. I have had the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless for about 6 months. I also own the Focal Bathys. I find myself using the Momentum 4 and the Sennheiser Momentum TWS 3 most often in a work setting and commuting. The Focals for travel and at home when I'm just puttering around and don't want to hook up a BT Dac/Amp and a wired IEM. The sound on the Sennheiser M4 are really good without any EQ, they are clean, clear with decent dynamics.
@@dennisvun8863 I find the Bathys to be a more musical sound - i am a devotee to the Focal house sound - i have a Clear OG and Radiance. I prefer the M4 at work because the ANC is a little better and the mic is far superior
I own the XM5s and tried the M4s in a store. The Senns were more comfortable, they have more space inside the cups. I have modded my XM5s with strips of foam to raise the pads a bit. The XM5 has a quick access ambient feature like the M4, you hold your hand over the cup and it pauses the music and activates ambient sound. But I think I would prefer the M4 implentation where you can activate it for a few minutes without needing your hand on them. On SQ, I would like to try the M4 with AptX (if you have a Samsung phone there's no AptX HD) but my feeling was the Sony's tonality was better for BT, more forgiving and relaxed for long listening, that's mostly subjective though of course. I also think for Samsung users, LDAC is a big plus.
That's a good point about the deeper cups on the M4s. I also agree that the XM5s are a smoother listen. That's where I think both headphones are comparable but different - neither is clearly superior in all ways.
Excellent Review! I have the M4 and use it with an iPhone. I have had them since Black Friday when there was a big sale - no regrets with the purchase. I am not surprised you didn't test the charging, since I get 4 weeks between charging. The app make the ANC and EQ simple to use and is my favorite feature. Thanks again for your insights.
With this type of product I'm not using them for long periods to give music my undivided attention, they're for use on the go and at this price level I find they all have acceptable sound quality. What matters more to me is the feature set, reliability and connection stability. I've been using LDAC for several years with headphones and portable DAC/amps without problems and I'm inclined to stick with it.
I feel much the same about the level of performance for this type of product. I do normally prefer LDAC, but the Senns were plenty good enough without it for me. 🙂
Perfect review, as usual. Got these as a replacement for my older PXC 550-II, which were more neutral sounding. With katest firmware it now has 5 band EQ; i got mine bass -1.5 db, mids +1db and trebke +1db. Also recently got CX Plus SE as complementary TWS to my Momentum 4, along with wired HD600 & HD58x, and for IEM I am still sticking with Okko OH10.
I'm having a PXC 550 II as well. Do you think the upgrade is worth it? I like a more flat EQ, but with a tiny bit of lower bass raised, so electronic music gets a slightly bit more punch. Can you achieve that, with the Momentum 4's?
@@Mattijs89 PXC is closer to flat, M4 are warmer and more punchy/quick bass, but very well balanced and tuned. All in all it is a worthy upgrade. EQ is now 5 band also.
I half wonder if Sony is refusing to sell the license for LDAC to competitors, but at the same time it is annoying because I'd argue the XM series headphones do not perform well enough to really make use of LDAC. This puts LDAC in a weird spot. Hopefully the Bathys has shaken up the market, and Sony will put out a true audiophile level headphone that can use LDAC and have decent connectivity.
just for portable use outdoors i've ordered the Shanling M1s which transmits and receives LDAC, which i don't plan to use; just balanced 4.4 to me DCA's ✌🎧👍 BT sucks 😂😂🤣🤣
I have these and love them. Perfect complement for those many unplugged moments sway from my HD800, Susvara, and Utopia haha! The only thing I wish is that Samsung finally unlocked Aptx HD and Aptx Lossless on the S23 series (and newer one day) since LDAC is really stable now finally even when locked at 990Kbps. Or I wish Focal (Bathys) and Sennheiser (Momentum 4) let users at least pay to add their own LDAC license. I personally find the imaging a wee bit better than my Xm5 but love them both.
Does the S23 series not give you aptX HD? What about aptX Adaptive? I've got S22 Ultra and would not upgrade if a phone doesn't give me a high quality codec.
@@PassionforSoundNo, Samsung only has aptX. I still believe my momentum 4s have better audio quality than my Sony XM4s, even with LDAC. I have done a lot of equalizer settings on the Sony's but none is near as good as the M4s. I used the new personilation EQ in the latest M4s firmware and it made them sound a lot better.
That's great news that you're enjoying the sound from the new EQ in the latest firmware. As for the Galaxy S23, if it's like my S22, it will only show aptX, but I believe it will use the best version of aptX available (HD or Adaptive)
I still have both and reach for the Momentum 4 more often (although I don't use wireless headphones much). That said, it's very hard to go wrong with either.
Thanks for the review and for doing the Microphone Test. I was looking for a set for the office and the test helped me decide on these over the Sony's. I preferred the sound signature of the Sennheisers. Had them now for 2 months and going great.
Another quality review! I hope you do another for Edifier Stax S3 as well for detailed comparison on these headphones. We really appreciate your reviews, keep up the good work!
I've tried to get the broader Edifier range, but the other gear is handled by a different distributor it seems. Hopefully I can get it in the future...
So very much enjoyed the sound, comfort and weight of these over several others though in busy and noisy environs, the volume hit a ceiling that was way to low for me. The Sonys had no such issue and that lack of headroom in the Senns was not something I could roll with.
@@PassionforSound Have you tried the new Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones yet? What do you think about them in terms of comfort, sound quality, ANC compare to the Momentum 4 and WH-1000XM5?
I haven't. I've been unimpressed with previous Bose headphones, but the new ones could be quite different so I don't want to judge without hearing them and I don't have a Bose contact at the moment.
Have always been a Sennheiser guy but "needed" a wireless noise cancelling headphone for the fact my phone doesn't have a headphone jack, flights and doing the vacuuming. Had always heard great things about the Sony's. At the time, this headphone wasn't out and the Momentum 3's were old and too much like my wired Momentum 2's. Tried the Bose variants but wasn't happy. Got the XM5's and very happy. Had I known the Momentum 4's were around the corner I would have waited a few months.... actually no, Sennheiser took far too long to bring these to market.
This is my first Sennheiser ANC for a long time so I can't comment on the M3, but the XM5s are still extremely good and, in some ways, preferable. Don't feel bad about having the Sonys instead. 🙂
@erikd6124 I slightly prefer the Momentum 4s over the XM5s, but I don't know that they're a worthy upgrade so much as a slight difference that some will prefer.
Thanks for the comprehensive review! - Now I'm stuck trying to decide between these Sennheisers or the Kef Mu7s for a home working environment, since they both have quality audio (or so I've been told 😅), a wired connection and ANC.
@@amanasd26 why not giving kids headphones with good sound, and most important, the best ANC, so they dont have to play at load volume, and then protecting their hearing.
@@amanasd26 thats why i returned the xm5s, and bought an cheaper sony for my daughter. I was afraid she was going to break them. So i bought a cheaper sony headsett with also good anc, for 1/3 of the price of the xm5s. But if she where a little older, and wasnt just throwing things around, the xm5s would be an keeper 😅😆🤣😊
I love the Sennheiser m4s but im annoyed because i had to return mine and now the new pair wont acknowledge the new update for 5 band eq. What a frustrating issue to have. I also tried the sony xm5 but found them uncomfortable compared to my old xm3s
hey man. have you repurchased momentum 4? I have mine returned as well due to bluetooth connectivity issue. it keeps on stuttering/sound cutting off, also has this weird static noise which is very loud and happens randomly.
I'm pretty sure you can use a USB-C cable and/or a 3.5mm to 3.5mm analog lead. I haven't tested it with a phone USB connection, but it should work fine.
LDAC Jones won’t be impressed with that codec oversight but might overlook it if SQ is still exceptional. We saw this in the case of the Between ANC TWS buds which had no hi-res codec at all.
Yep, I definitely think the SQ makes up for it with the M4s. There have also been some other "low res" wireless I've tried that have been extremely enjoyable so hi res isn't everything 🙂
There are lots of options around and it often depends on where you live as to what's the best choice in terms of cost and aberrantly l availability. Which country are you in?
I don't have the Mu7s available for a direct comparison, but I slightly prefer the M4s I think. ANC is about on par, but the M4s have better features and their sound is a bit more dynamic and fun. The Mu7 is a more refined sound though so it will depend on what you're looking for.
I just bought my Sennheiser Momentum 4’s. I’m a little disappointed in the lack of volume headroom. You really need to apply a lot of volume to these. My Senn. TW3’s actually have a lot more headroom and sound a lot better. I’m sticking with IEM’s. With a great seal on high end IEM’s, they just make headphones a thing of the past. Portability and discreet. Nothing compares
I agree that IEMs can be preferable for portable use. You're not true first person to mention limited volume. It might be to do with the EU restrictions on maximum volumes.
@@PassionforSound I'm new to the Momentum 4's after coming from the XM4's and I'm noticing volume level is lower than the XM4. I'm in Aus and purchased through Amazon. I can live with it but I'd rather not be cranking it on my iphone. Have you experienced this?
I haven't noticed that specifically on my pair although I do sometimes find myself ticking over into the red on my phone's Bluetooth volume scale. I know I don't listen that loud so I wonder if the volume scales have been adjusted to prevent hearing damage. As a low-moderate volume listener, I might not be aware of any changes because I can still reach the levels I need.
i think there is too much bass i have to set bass to -6dB but I compare to Fiio K7 + Sivga Oriole - and at least now that's a baseline for me, and I love any kind of EDM and electronica... maybe the problem is that new EDM tracks have overly too much bass :/ coz older tracks (like rock from '80) sounds good.
it appears the m4 have poor natural acousric characteristics, which then need to rely on over processed dsp processing. just listen to them turned off with the 3.5 cable and you will hear how poor it actually is. the dsp correction causes smearing of detail from the music. interesting, the accentum actually have a better base acoustic design which doesnt need over cooked dsp.
Many wireless headphones rely on the DSP baked into the Bluetooth chips (which is not to say I agree with the approach). I haven't tried the Accentum, but that's good to hear that they might have started with better acoustic tuning
@@PassionforSound I think they made an effort with the accentum plus with drivers and positioning to get a good acoustic property naturally before relying on dsp. The only advantage of the M4s appear to have is slightly better comfort. The accentum sound is closer to the sennheiser pro line of headphones when driven by a high quality external DAC. The music is more faithful to the recording, where as the M4s try to create an sonic sensation. Reminds me of the Bose approach to audio. The connection to the music is more immediate and direct on the accentum plus.
Thank you very much for this well-made review (as always, I should add). It's not that often that you listen to a review and think, well, that are exactly my thoughts. And it's also exactly what I tell people who ask me about the Sonys and the Sennheisers. I own both, both are really good for what they are. But I enjoy the Sennheisers more for all the same reasons you mention. Actually, I was accidentally listening to your video with the Momentum 4. There is only one little point where I disagree. This is LDAC. It's better on paper, but first, it's not well supported, and second imho it is only ever so slightly better sounding if the circumstances are at an optimum.
They're both excellent headphones in their own way, aren't they! Also, it appears you might have become a channel member (I'm new to RUclips membership) so thank you!
@Passion for Sound Yes, I became a channel member, I think about 3 weeks ago. I wanted to support your channel and thank you for this great content. You are putting a lot of work into it. Thank you! PS: I joyned you on patreon as well.
That rather typical Sennheiser sub-bass shelf and presence range scoop is polarizing. In many cases it would need better EQ than the 3 bands provided. The player itself would need decent EQ capabilities. Sony treble remains smooth even when dialled way up. To my ears most Sennheiser BT headphones in the past have had a harsher treble in comparison. Is it different with the M4?
I definitely think the XM5s are the smoother sounding headphone, but I find myself preferring the M4s so I'm guessing they might have improved from the older Momentum models.
Why does no one ever compare the sound and funtionality on wired mode? This should give superior audio and are how I'd use either the M4 or Sony. Also, can the M4 use EQ settings on wired (usb-c) mode? Because I don’t think any of the Sony's XM4 or 5 will even when plugged in and powered on.
I used to do that, but most people seemed to not care so I stopped taking the time to test and then extend the length of the videos discussing it. Sorry.
I haven't tried all of those so I can't really comment, but something like the Oriole, being a wired headphone, will almost always win over wireless models
Have you try the Audeze maxwell? At only $300, this will blow out sony xm5 and momentum in term of sound quality. There is no ANC in maxwell, but their passive isolation is very good. Plus has 80hrs.
@@PassionforSound I think you should try. I have the BW PX8 and i bought the maxwell for my son intended for gaming. But when I tested damn...for wireless its very good, comparable to wired audiophile high end. Best part is unlike most other expensive wireless headsets this include LDAC...wow. Not even Bathys or PX8 support it. The only downside is crap software and heavy/bulky like common audeze headsets.
The Sennheiser Momentum 4 headphones offer excellent audio quality for music. However, they may not be the best choice for video calls or meetings, particularly in an open office environment, as the microphone tends to pick up surrounding noises, including conversations from colleagues. Additionally, they are not suitable for sports activities due to overheating issues. It would be beneficial for Sennheiser to consider reintroducing physical buttons for volume and other controls.
What any influencer FORGET to mention about this model is the FIRMWARE UNSTABILITY...which is very annoyng - smart pause and head detection is terible...wont detect when i remove my headsets, only if i put them on my neck....also not start/pause automatically - the headset also suddenly shutdown even if is streaming....randomly - sound is good but not as hood as expected and the app even if usefull, could break the sound if you dont know more about sound quality. I am a bit dissapointed but is still acceptable to keep them because of sound and battery.
Hello If i want to listen looseless audio from appel music do i need to listen it in wired mode ? Bcs it seems wireless mode doesn’t support looseless audio 😮😮
@@PassionforSound I did 😊 I have the momentum 4. But havent tried/used them that much. But going to use them when im taking calls and casual allround listening. But i have to admitt one thing, and yes, its great to not have the cable, but lately ive just have been spoiled with the sound of wired ones. And wired iems and headphones, sounds so much better. Its like if 2 people are runing up an hill. One normal guy and one who exercise a lot. Both gets to the top. But the normal guy struggles more, and the exercise guy gets there without a sweet. Bad example,i know 😆 But when im listening to bluetooth headphones/iems, i get tired/fatigue after an while. But with wired, i can listen longer. But both have their strenghts/weakness. Now i cant wait to hear the xelento v2, wich is delivered tomorrow. Have an nice weekend 😊
I've just finished a month of testing all the various notable contenders that I could gather, using Amazon's generous return policy. I rolled around deep and dirty with all of them. At the end of the day, I'm holding up, steady and high, the Sennheisers. None of the others were "bad" per say, a testament to how spoiled we are these days, but the momentum 4's are clearly the adult in the room. Bonus if you have aptx-hd, but they still sound absolutely beautiful on the basic codecs. The comfort and usability is also very enjoyable, and intuitive. Keep up the great work "passion", you're a good one. 16:00
I haven't heard any of the current Bose models, but I've previously not been a fan of their tuning. Comfort and noise cancelling are excellent, but the sound wasn't particularly natural from Bose headphones I tried.
some people can notice M4 has a bit better sound quality. but overall xm5 is better specially in comfort, connection stability and ANC. I generally keep headphone on head whenever I open my laptop and for that use case M4 is not suitable. xm5 can be kep ton head for unlimited number of hours. M4 starts hurting very shortly may be due to clamping force and pads design.
… I’m currently sitting with momentum four and PX eight- trying to decide which one to keep. PX eight has more sharp punch, clarity, and detail. Momentum four is more soft and warm with deeper bass. The PX eight is preferable because of the detail and clarity, but it also has a very weird sound to it. I don’t know if it’s just the Bluetooth sound compared to wired. I almost want to keep the momentum four, even though it’s not as detailed, but the softness and warmth to it covers up the weirdness of the Bluetooth sound. The M4 is more digestible, easier listening. PX eight sometimes is a little harsh.
@@toms_video The only times I've thought the PX8 is harsh was with very old brass instrument music, you're most likely bothered by the upper mids. I know when the PX8 came out some people thought they had very sharp treble, but I've found it to actually be upper mids. I even increased the treble by +2 from the B&W app and it made them sound more open. You could always add separate EQ to see if you can make the sound more palatable. I originally intended to buy the Sennheiser, but their MTW3 earbuds broke after two months of use and I kind of lost faith in the modern Sennheiser, that and the lack of physical buttons I guess.
@@toms_videowhat headphones did you keept ? I'm looking for an upgrade from Sony XM4 and mx5. Looking at momentum and px8. 250 vs 500 $. Did try them out for 30 min. Liked the px8 better but both sounded better then sonys
I may be be wrong but I do think that only Sony headphones have LDAC because it is owned by Sony. Every Android phone has LDAC, though, since it has been added to the AOSP. I’ve looked at the specs on Bose, B&W, Focal and they have SBC, AAC, AptX Adaptive (Bose only supports SBC and AAC though). I’ve also experienced much more drop outs using LDAC compared to AptX HD or adaptive. They are all lossy anyway so the sound quality has more to do with the DAC, amp, DSP and the drivers than the Bluetooth codec used.
Thanks for sharing that info about all the different brands. LDAC is definitely not as strong a codec in terms of reliability and range, but consistently sounds better when all else is equal.
I had mine with bluetooth connection issue. using the latest firmware. the sound keeps on stuttering/cutting off. also has this weird static loud noise on both left and right ear. I really liked the sound quality but I have to return due to that issue.
I wonder why my noice canceling settings change every now and then. I want it full on the anc mode and not on transparancy mode.. anyone know why the Smart Control app is changing my settings?
For music I prefer the Focal Batys but for ANC the AirPods Max and Sony XM5 are more effective at blocking out the TV. The Momentum 4 looks interesting but truth be told, I need another pair of BT overhear headphones like I need a kick in the head. 🙂
There are a few great choices like the HiFiMan Ananda stealth version. Check out the "Passion for Sound" recommends link in the description and filter for planar headphones to see all the models I think are good (with pricing so you can look based on your budget). There are links to the reviews for them there too.
No, sorry. I find that most of the current, premium ANC headphones all are pretty comparable with noise cancelling. Between the Sony XM5 and the Momentum 4, I didn't notice any meaningful difference.
They sound a little better wired than wireless (depending on the source quality). However, they need to be powered on to sound their best because there's some DSP being done to achieve their sound. With the power off, the sound is a bit flat and dull sounding.
@@PassionforSound Thanks Lachlan. I tend to use BT for my phones and tablet, and, wired for my DAP and my (Mac Pro) laptop (which does very good D/A conversion). I've seen the same with other NC headphones that I have used, they sound better with the NC on. Even music playback on my 1st gen wired only AKG N60nc headphones sound better with the NC on, even in a quiet room. Tangent alert: I used to bemoan the 2.5mm cord input on the AKG headphones instead of having 3.5mm. I recently took a closer look at the cable, it has 4 poles instead of 3, so it's probably a TRRS jack on the phones. It works with the Koss Utility Cord USB-C cable, and I was able to use it with the 4.4mm balanced output on my DAP using an adapted cable.
@@PassionforSound Yes, balanced is definitely better, especially with my DAP, it uses dual DAC chips on the balanced output and only one chip for the single ended output.
Ok, after 2 months with the sennies, I have to say this: this is my 4th pair of Sennheiser's, I have a pair of 660S2's and a pair of 800S's that both feature amazing sound quality; the 3rd pair are my old HD1's that the 4 is supposed to replace. Ummm...NO. No, no, no. No matter they sound almost as good as the Focal Bathys for a lot less, no matter whatever other good things you can say about them, they have 2 big failings that caused me to give them away. First and most important, they absolutely suck at connectivity. Phone, computer, my Wiim streamer, the television, it doesn't matter; they cannot hold a stable connection unless you turn the bitrate down to it's lowest level. Sound quality means nothing if you can't get through an entire song without stuttering. Second, and this may not matter to many, these things sound absolutely awful when plugged in as passive monitors. Truely terrible. I could forgive the latterr, but the former makes them useless and therefore worthless. Sorry, Sennheiser, I'm your biggest fan, but these things are trash.
I wonder what's going on. You're not the first person to say something like this, but mine have never missed a beat. Maybe they work with some devices, but not all? Not that this should be an issue. Sorry to hear that they've let you down.
@@erikd6124 They actually sound good, but they oddly require massive input power when active and plugged in. More I think than the 660S2's 300 ohms. BTW, I recently acquired a pair of Bower & Wilkens Px7 S2e's and find them superior in every way to the Momentum 4's.
I didn't try them while exercising, but they sound work well if you're comfortable with headphones during workouts. They're secure on the head and should handle some sweat ok
The Sennheisers sound more open and natural. The Sony sound is more corrected and a bit compressed. Clarity and artist separation is better on the Sennheiser side. The Sony has better noise suppression. The sony is easier and more reliable to operate. The Sennheiser 3 had a better classical build quality than both. I have not tried the Sony on wire, but the Sennheiser has too much bass as the EQ only works for Bluetooth.
I scored a pair of 1000xm5 for 120 usd on a overstock/b-stock site so I'm settling for them for now unless someone wants to trade me for their sennys 😮 I actually like the sonys but I think they are way overpriced in my opinion
Nice deal! I think they're about right when compared to the competition because they're ANC and other features are very good. They just need some tweaking to sound their best.
These are awefull. I returned after less than 10 minutes. I think in the UK the Base and Volume is limited. All cheap noise cancelling headphones are bad. I learned this once I listened to SONY MDR-Z7M2 then FiiO FA19. The FiiO FA19 are very loud and sound awesome via KANN ULTRA or FiiO M17. Next on my list will be FOCAL CLEAR MG PRO. Once you listened to high end studio sound you can't go back. KANN ULTRA has a great Equalizer that will work in any Music App. I increased the Base wich works on some songs and Kann Ultra Sounds better on some songs when Equalizer turned off.
Yep, wireless headphones won't match wired setups from premium sources. It's not that the headphones are bad (based on the context of the competition), you're just used to a much better setup. 🙂
@@PassionforSoundyes, you and others have said they just have a cleaner sound than the Sonys. That would be good to have. Thanks. Good review. Who know, maybe they'll be put on "special" for our Black Friday shopping We can hope.
I’m still in stitches over this ridiculous new Hed Unity headphone that is asking us to pay $2,199 for tech that is already obsolete. I pity the gullible folks who cough up that price when high resolution Bluetooth and Wi-Fi codecs are already underway for a fraction of the cost (not to mention MQAir). I have no idea what the folks at this startup were thinking (weren’t they even aware that HEDD already trademarked that brand name ages ago?) 🙄
I wasn't familiar with Hed Unity - I'll have to check it out. I think MQAir is probably dead in the water at this stage though so there's probably one less competitor. 🙂 (Unless they sell the tech to a different company)
Refrain from buying this headphone as they have lot of bugs - hissing sound with anc on, auto mute in the middle of a meeting. Sound quality is good but at this price point it should perform as an all rounder.
Have you tried the latest update? I didn't experience these issues, but I might not have used them in the same circumstances as you (e.g. for video meetings)
Make sure to get the latest FW update. I use them as my daily driver, music, work, meetings, etc., and they paused (while on ear and in use) 2 times in 6 months. There's a sensor in the cup, perhaps check for debris etc. Keep in mind that the BT signal can become disturbed in certain 'signal rich' area's (work, airports, etc). ANC should not hiss.
@@PassionforSound HD 560s, i did some tuning on EQ for the m4s but my HD 560s is basically the equivalent. I'm not a professional headphone person, but i do enjoy music so i bought it as an upgrade and learned that M4s are good for use outside of the PC (which is why i liked them) but studio open back headphones are better for music. So i felt unimpressed with the quality as it all sounded blended together until i tuned it with app which made the bass sound separated and not merged. Basically, i thought that Sennheiser wireless headphones for 413 $ would offer me a better quality than (hd 560s) 230$ headphones (more $ = better which i was wrong ofc) I'm thinking about returning them now in exchange for *maybe* upgrading to HD 650 - i read some on this and heard however these are not exactly an "upgrade" necessarily since its based on preference after all and is a bit different compared to 560s. I thought it would just be a raw upgrade like new Logitech headset generations, but its not really like that i read.
You're comparing two very different products. The HD560S needs a DAC and amp which are not free. They also can't take calls with mic, provide active noise cancelling, transparency mode, or operate wirelessly. Wired headphones with a good DAC and amp will always outperform wireless products in my experience. They're for very different purposes.
@@PassionforSound i dont use AMP and it sounds good without one, better than m4 - my purpose was for listening to music with the added benefit of mobility.
Yes Yes Yes
Excellent Review! I have the M4 and use it with an iPhone. I have had them since Black Friday when there was a big sale - no regrets with the purchase. I am not surprised you didn't test the charging, since I get 4 weeks between charging. The app make the ANC and EQ simple to use and is my favorite feature. Thanks again for your insights.
Glad you're enjoying your M4s. Great choice!
Thanks for sharing your experiences, Eazy!
Especially when Hifiman (AnandaBT) and many others easily and quickly supported both LDAC and Aptx etc without any issues.
true audiophile headphones should directly stream hires files from the Internet, avoid Bluetooth altogether.
just for portable use outdoors i've ordered the Shanling M1s which transmits and receives LDAC, which i don't plan to use; just balanced 4.4 to me DCA's ✌🎧👍 BT sucks 😂😂🤣🤣
@Allan Sh yes like Sonos wifi type streaming good point
Bathys etc are beyond niche compared to the XM's that it is utterly irrelevant how they do.
Especially since Aptx and Aptx HD are now free for mfg to use on their phones.
I appreciate you time doing this video after all said and done which ones would you buy. Sony X5 or Momentum 4?
I still have both and reach for the Momentum 4 more often (although I don't use wireless headphones much). That said, it's very hard to go wrong with either.
Thanks for the review and for doing the Microphone Test. I was looking for a set for the office and the test helped me decide on these over the Sony's. I preferred the sound signature of the Sennheisers. Had them now for 2 months and going great.
So glad I could help and that you're loving them!
Any issues with teams calls in a busy office and the mic?
For what it's worth, I've used them in airports for calls and they managed quite well except for during announcements over the airport PA system
Do you know of any replacement pads for these? Looking for cloth or suede/velour ear pads as it gets very hot in queensland
I'm not aware of any - sorry! I agree that they can get a bit more sticky than something like the Sony pads
@@PassionforSound I see. Well I'm sure it would be worth the wait.
So very much enjoyed the sound, comfort and weight of these over several others though in busy and noisy environs, the volume hit a ceiling that was way to low for me. The Sonys had no such issue and that lack of headroom in the Senns was not something I could roll with.
That's interesting. I wonder if your pair had the EU volume restriction on them?
I know this is an old comment but I managed to raise the volume of my pair pretty significantly by messing with the EQs
Hi Lachlan! I'm still happy with my Sony XM5, plus my Samsung phone supports LDAC. So I don't feel I need to upgrade. Thanks for this great review.
It's still an excellent option, Bobby. I agree that having the LDAC is nice and I have a hard time choosing between the two headphones.

Have you tried the new Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones yet?
I agree! Sony is the king, whatever anyone says :)@@PassionforSound
@@PassionforSoundI own the xm5s and XM4S. Are the momentum 4 an upgrade ? I will use them on dualsense playing PS5. 3,5 mm analog

I saw. It's great!
Thanks for the comprehensive review! - Now I'm stuck trying to decide between these Sennheisers or the Kef Mu7s for a home working environment, since they both have quality audio (or so I've been told 😅), a wired connection and ANC.
That's a tough one! I definitely like both, but I'd probably choose the Momentum 4s overall for their extra features (EQ, transparency mode, etc.)

you're giving your 11 year old daughter one of these headphones?
It's never too early to enjoy good sound 🙂

I love the Sennheiser m4s but im annoyed because i had to return mine and now the new pair wont acknowledge the new update for 5 band eq. What a frustrating issue to have. I also tried the sony xm5 but found them uncomfortable compared to my old xm3s
Oh no! Sorry to read that you're having such troubles. I hope you can get it sorted out.
hey man. have you repurchased momentum 4? I have mine returned as well due to bluetooth connectivity issue. it keeps on stuttering/sound cutting off, also has this weird static noise which is very loud and happens randomly.
@johnbravo7689 yeah I've had a new pair for a while. They work fine now
@@chrisnewton2325 nice! and your firmware is updated to the latest? right?
Can this headset be connected by a wire to your phone as an alternative to using the Bluetooth or only to a PC/Computer?
I'm pretty sure you can use a USB-C cable and/or a 3.5mm to 3.5mm analog lead. I haven't tested it with a phone USB connection, but it should work fine.
Yes, no issue.
Thanks for confirming!
What is a good balanced cable for de denon 9200 ?

There are lots of options around and it often depends on where you live as to what's the best choice in terms of cost and aberrantly l availability. Which country are you in?
Please could you tell which sounds better between this and Kef Mu7. And which has better ANC between both of them?
Yes, that's tricky. For most genres I listen to (rock, blues, funk, jazz, etc.) they're just right.
Brilliant review, thank you, just pulled the trigger on the Sennheisers, got an amazing deal, looking forward to them turning up!!
What headphones are you upgrading from mate (that's if you are upgrading from any pair of other headphones)?
@@Techranology Hi, been using mainly earbuds thus far, Sennheiser momentum CX plus and Oppo Enco, so first dive into headphones!
Enjoy!
it appears the m4 have poor natural acousric characteristics, which then need to rely on over processed dsp processing. just listen to them turned off with the 3.5 cable and you will hear how poor it actually is. the dsp correction causes smearing of detail from the music. interesting, the accentum actually have a better base acoustic design which doesnt need over cooked dsp.
How does the M4 sound when being active and using a 3,5mm analog input ?
@@erikd6124 I think very close to it on bluetooth.
How would you compare master and dynamics mh40s to the Senn momentum 4s? My mh40’s broke and I’m debating getting them again or these
I haven't tried those - sorry!

@Passion for Sound You're very welcome! The stars are creators like you who produce well-made content, not the supporters.
The new firmware update on the M4 added two more bands, so now we have 5.
Yes. Just updated today. It's a nice upgrade to the software and firmware.
Interesting. Did you get the chance to play with the new EQ yet?
No. I really like them in their stock setup, but I might run through the auto customisation approach at some stage and see what it produces
Sorry.
Great review, I had to return mine due to the fact that they ratted if no properly fitted
Sorry to hear that. Did you get a different brand instead?
How is the sound isolation compared to a pair of closed backs like DT770 Pro?
Passive isolation is as good as any other non-ANC closed back I've tried I think.
Which one would you choose only for sound quality? Momentum 4, bower wilkins p7 s2, audio technica msr7b or sigva oriole?
I haven't tried all of those so I can't really comment, but something like the Oriole, being a wired headphone, will almost always win over wireless models
I hope they announce momentum 5 soon
Have you try the Audeze maxwell? At only $300, this will blow out sony xm5 and momentum in term of sound quality. There is no ANC in maxwell, but their passive isolation is very good. Plus has 80hrs.
I haven't as yet. My access to Audeze is severely limited :(
@@PassionforSound I think you should try.
If I can, I definitely will
The Sennheiser Momentum 4 headphones offer excellent audio quality for music.
What any influencer FORGET to mention about this model is the FIRMWARE UNSTABILITY...which is very annoyng
- smart pause and head detection is terible...wont detect when i remove my headsets, only if i put them on my neck....also not start/pause automatically
- the headset also suddenly shutdown even if is streaming....randomly
- sound is good but not as hood as expected and the app even if usefull, could break the sound if you dont know more about sound quality.
I am a bit dissapointed but is still acceptable to keep them because of sound and battery.
A reviewer like me can only discuss what I've experienced and I've had no such issues. Perhaps the later firmware has fixed this.
Hello
If i want to listen looseless audio from appel music do i need to listen it in wired mode ?
Bcs it seems wireless mode doesn’t support looseless audio 😮😮
That's probably correct. Using Bluetooth is always a lossy transfer so there's no benefit in a lossless music file
Im going to watch this review tomorrow, with my morning coffe 😊

I'm working on something new, but can post a link to the old database if you'd like.
Thanks Jeremiah! That's a great explanation of their sound - adult. Not overdoing anything and completely adept with everything.
@@PassionforSound Absolutely
Ty! How would you compare these against the Bose?
I haven't heard any of the current Bose models, but I've previously not been a fan of their tuning. Comfort and noise cancelling are excellent, but the sound wasn't particularly natural from Bose headphones I tried.
some people can notice M4 has a bit better sound quality. but overall xm5 is better specially in comfort, connection stability and ANC. I generally keep headphone on head whenever I open my laptop and for that use case M4 is not suitable. xm5 can be kep ton head for unlimited number of hours. M4 starts hurting very shortly may be due to clamping force and pads design.
Which should I buy xm4 or m4
@robbenvanpersie1562 I haven't tried the XM4, but the M4 is my favourite wireless headphone.
How do these compare to the B&W PX8? I went from the Momentum 2.0 to the PX8 and it was quite a leap.
I haven't yet tried the B&W headphones (at least not recent models)
Tough call, Thomas! My advice is to bring it back to the one you WANT to reach for first, not the one you THINK you should reach for first. Good luck!
Are there still huge connection issues with them? The only thing holding me back from making a purchase!
I've had no issues with my phone or laptop.
I had mine with bluetooth connection issue. using the latest firmware. the sound keeps on stuttering/cutting off. also has this weird static loud noise on both left and right ear. I really liked the sound quality but I have to return due to that issue.

No, sorry. I find that most of the current, premium ANC headphones all are pretty comparable with noise cancelling. Between the Sony XM5 and the Momentum 4, I didn't notice any meaningful difference.
How do these sound in wired mode compared to BT? Will wired mode work with the power off?
For once, I didn't test this because I rarely find people asking about it. Leave it with me and I'll find test for you...
Bonus! That's a nice win being able to use the balanced out when it's better

I gave them to a friend who had the same problem, so he sent them in to Sennheiser under warranty. I guess we will see...@@PassionforSound
How do they sound plugged in through analog when active?
@@erikd6124 They actually sound good, but they oddly require massive input power when active and plugged in. More I think than the 660S2's 300 ohms.
BTW, I recently acquired a pair of Bower & Wilkens Px7 S2e's and find them superior in every way to the Momentum 4's.
All great If they don't die on you. 2 pairs did die for me and cannot be powered on any more and reading posts I can see its not rare
Geez. That's not good! Mine are still going strong, thankfully, but if that's a common issue, it's a worry.
Often you can fix it by pressing the power button for 20 secs (reset).
Hey how are these at the gym?
I didn't try them while exercising, but they sound work well if you're comfortable with headphones during workouts. They're secure on the head and should handle some sweat ok
@@PassionforSound thank you, I want them for general use but it'd be great to be able to use them at the gym too. Thanks for the information.
My pleasure. Sorry I couldn't provide specific experiences
I agree for the most part. I think bass levels are very subjective though.
EISA 2022-2023 SONY WH-1000XM5 :)
Any1 using these to watch tv or firestick?
I've watched some streaming content with them. Did you want to know anything specific?
@Passion for Sound If you have a firestick have you tried them with that if so any lag? I have the firestick 4k max which has aac-lc
I haven't got a Firestick - sorry
Sadly, here in September, after all the positive reviews, the price is now about the same as the Sonys or even more. Rats.
Sorry to hear that. It's still the slightly better headphone IMO
@@PassionforSoundyes, you and others have said they just have a cleaner sound than the Sonys. That would be good to have. Thanks. Good review. Who know, maybe they'll be put on "special" for our Black Friday shopping We can hope.
It's quite likely. Good luck!
Just connected these via bluetooth to my iphone with the app - it sounds ass
Compared to what?
@@PassionforSound HD 560s, i did some tuning on EQ for the m4s but my HD 560s is basically the equivalent.
I'm not a professional headphone person, but i do enjoy music so i bought it as an upgrade and learned that M4s are good for use outside of the PC (which is why i liked them) but studio open back headphones are better for music. So i felt unimpressed with the quality as it all sounded blended together until i tuned it with app which made the bass sound separated and not merged.
Basically, i thought that Sennheiser wireless headphones for 413 $ would offer me a better quality than (hd 560s) 230$ headphones (more $ = better which i was wrong ofc)
I'm thinking about returning them now in exchange for *maybe* upgrading to HD 650 - i read some on this and heard however these are not exactly an "upgrade" necessarily since its based on preference after all and is a bit different compared to 560s.
I lean more towards quality of music however, so I'm willing to sacrifice DAC requirement for better audio quality.
And yes i realized its different
Any suggestions for the best wired headphones that don't require a DAC or amp? Something in a similar price range or up to $250?

Yet another paid Sennheiser advertisement that does not reflect reality!!! Annoying!!!
No payment here and I'm still using these as my primary wireless headphone today (although I'm a very rare user of wireless headphones). I've had no issues with mine in their limited use, but I have heard that others have had troubles. I can only share my experiences.
ok I see@@PassionforSound
Thumbs down for sneaking the ad into over half the sound quality time stamp in an attempt to justify revenue on the spot you know some people will click right to thinking its a detailed sound quality review instead of an advert with no stamp
I don't choose where the ads go. YT does that automatically
