Just for fun, I attempted the impossible at 13 and engaged the Yellows on Lifeline. I scored one hit at close range with a sidewinder, which was incredibly lucky. The Yellow did some sort of delayed stutter, as if it was still attempting to avoid the missile, but the AI was clearly reacting too late. I decided not to press my luck and disengaged, completing the mission with 20 seconds to spare. To this day, that's the only time I've ever "broken the game".
I suppose if you've got the QAAM missiles and a comparable aircraft, it can't be that hard to land a hit. But I do refuse to believe that you can actually shoot down a Yellow until you kill Yellow 4 over Stonehenge. :P
Recently while playing on Ace I tried shooting them down with the Su-37. Got 5-10 hits in(including a QAAM or two) and nothing really happened, they just kept on flying as if I'd never shot them.
On the mission "Shattered Skies" where you defend the rocket launch, you can force Yellow Squadron to withdraw. You can't shoot them down, but IIRC some audio lines play about a yellow "Trailing smoke!" It's been years since I played, but I recall engaging them with guns since the yellows seemed near immune to missiles.

I like to imagine the songs are an expression of Mobius One's own feelings. In previous songs, we saw him get acclimated with his duties. He feels not only a sense of protection for his newfound friends, but a sense of competition. He must face Yellow's leader. They dance in that dark sky, contrails marking the foot steps. Streaking spiralling. All the while, Mobius is buying his squad mates time. Too late! Yellow gets the drop on Mobius. The cannon roars and spews fire, tearing a hole in Mobius' frame. He is beaten. As quick as he can, Mobius turns to leave in shame. Just before he does, Yellow pulls alongside him. For a singular moment, they share a glance. They know each is now their adversary. Their counterpart in every way. As Mobius turns to retreat, the Yellows prepare to finish him. No. Yellow 13 will not allow it. Mercy is the mark of great men.
