April, good job. Welcome to the world of metal fab. You did a good job and the brackets look great. My only comment is this. After 52 years of metal fab I must stress two things. Secure your gas bottle. Any time the protective cap is off, it must be strapped to a wall or cart so it doesn't fall. Pressure bottles can be very dangerous. Secondly, get the biggest fire extinguisher you can lift and attach it near an exit. With all the wood you have, a fire could be out of control in no time. After the fire starts, it is too late. Mount it at an exit so that your first move will be to escape and you can consider fighting the fire or leaving and calling 911 at the exit. Never let even a minor fire get between you and the exit. Sorry to be so lengthy, but we love you and wouldn't want harm to come your way. Thanks
Sorry, one more thing. A lot of scrap tube and such is galvanized. If you use it, make sure you have lots of ventalation as the welding fumes from galvanized metal are toxic. Sand off the galv, don't try to weld throught it. TIP: after a while, get a TIG torch and experiment with TIG welding. It offers more control and you can use different materials. Good luck. OBTW, Welding Tips and Tricks - great choice!!!
Absolutely right about securing the bottle. If the bottle falls and the valve gets knocked off, you have just created a missile. With a full bottle, that is maybe 2,000 lbs of thrust out of a steel tube that weights maybe about 100 lbs. That is 20g of accelration. It will go through walls and/or bounce all over the shop. At minimum, there will be major damage. At worst, injury or death.
Great video April! That's a great little welding machine too. I'm sure you have seen the many comments on chaining your cylinder for safety's sake. So be safe girl. Can't wait to see your progress and your next welding project
: ) Thank you Jody, you're videos were awesome. And no worries, I will certainly secure the tank.
I have watched several of your videos and must say your enthusiasm in fence construction and welding is awesome. I enjoy your learning and willingness to also share your mistakes. Thank you for taking the time and your efforts in creating your videos. Keep up the great work.
Just found your videos today. You are very well spoken and a pleasure to listen to. Reminds me of the old days watching Norm on New Yankee Workshop. Oh and I love how you still use your old Chevy the way they were meant to be used. Makes me smile😀
You know what I like about you? You approach a new skill with such enthusiasm. I've enjoyed watching you evolve.
: ) Thanks
I agree!
Love it - welding opens up so many possibilities - you did great April!
Gosh! You’re a rock star! I have done carpentry for commercial and amateur, I have never dare to pick up welding but you encouraged me to learn it. Thanks! Keep it up
I have three trades and still it was late in life when I learned to weld. I've been gas welding since I was 12 but never electric welded until I was in my 50s. A month or so after I started welding I designed and built a rear bumper for a Freightliner road tractor and did a good enough job that other truckers were asking the driver of that truck where they could get one. Since I was doing maintenance on a fleet of trucks I could practice all I wanted at no cost to me. Lucky for me as a pipefitter I learned from some of the best welders, rig welders in the oil patch. You look to be doing just fine and given your skill with everything else I've seen you do I think you're going to do fine.
I agree with some of the other commenters, about building a cart to put it on.
Stay safe.
Unless you're going to be doing a lot of TIG, I would recommend using 75/25 Argon/Co2 mixture it generally whats used most commonly for MIG.
Molly here. I just did my first welding project as well and I can't wait to do more! Time to get industrial:)
Welding is a blast and a great addition to your arsenal! I love your solution, simple and well designed. I can't want to see more!
I've been following your videos for a while and what you are doing is inspiring everyone! What you do is make "making" available to everyone. It's easy for an elitist out there to be snooty and make it seem like only the "qualified people" can make things. In this day in age anything should be available for anyone especially with the explosion of RUclips and social media. What you do is simple, you're interested in making something so you get out do the research buy the gear and actually make stuff. Of course for those who has never done woodworking it is a bit intimidating but we all have to start somewhere, just like you did. But now you have worked your way up to self teaching welding. That is very remarkable. That takes a lot guts for me. I do hope that more and more people can get inspired by you videos and just simply go out and make stuff because you want to. Please keep up the good work I'll always enjoy your videos. I highly recommend watching Adam Savage (Mythbusters) on Tested. He talks making on a broader sense and how it gets people involved on a wider almost global scale. I certainly learned practical tips on making but also the philosophy and the importance of making "making" available to everyone.
Lol the wood shavings pile had a hat and sunglasses on omg I can't even 😂😂😂😂😂😂
In the beginning lol

You're always an inspiration! I'm a professional watercolor painter (as you can tell from my channel) but I want to do this sort of stuff on the weekend. I've wanted to learn to weld but my guy friends sort of discouraged it saying, "oh you need to take a class...blah blah blah". Girl, you flat out trashed that theory. I always felt I could learn it on my own and I know it now. Thanks for all you do. I love your channel!
Oh, and btw. I give you a 10 for form and style when you tossed the instructions wrapper. Made me laugh out loud!
To lay down beads, you don't need a class. Welding is a skill that you become proficient at the more you practice, like painting.
However, even an introductory one week community college class will clarify where you would want to use certain joints and why as well as the type of weld appropriate for the application.
You don't need a welding class at all to learn. MIG welding is easy. You could literally learn the basics in about 30 minutes. People who take classes are people who want certifications and be professional welders. No reason to take a class for a weekend welder. Just make little projects to get practice. My first project was a box with hooks on the inside to hold plastic grocery bags open so I could scoop dog poop in my backyard and put in in the grocery bags. LOL. April made her wood hanger rack. Just think of something a go for it. You'll learn.
Welding is a rewarding hobby. The cheapest and easiest welding machine is stick welding (SMAW). If you learn by yourself, by doing a project, in my experience, in 5 days you'll know most basic understanding about welding (welding skill and safety). To start with 1. you can practice to cut sheet/hollow steel and mitter pipe/tube, 2. practice for surface preparation: 3. practice to weld a joint; 4. practice with different electrode (6010, 6011, 6913), 5. practice with different electrode sizes and amperage, 6. learn about welding process (DCEP vs DCEN), 7. learn about finishing processes (how to apply epoxy putty, zinchromate and finish paint). TIG and MIG welding are harder to learn and the machines is more expensive.
Right accessories will be helpfull: corner clamps (buy at least 4 units), auto darkened face mask, 2-3 small angle grinders (cutting, grinding, flap disc), welding apron, welding gloves, hat/bandana, ear muffs, etc.
Cool! I'm another wood worker who recently learned to weld. It's challenging to make a good bead. Welding Tips and Tricks is my favorite welding channel. I like your design: good idea using pipe to avoid scratches.
I found your fence video just by chance, and now my normally car feed is mixed with videos like this! I love it!!! Also my wife never watches my youtube videos, but she actually asked to see yours after just 1 video, thanks for being on youtube!
Wow you have a nice old Chevy the best style 67 to 72.
I was admiring it too! Sure is a nice looking car. Steve at Woodworking for Mere Mortals has a sweet looking ford from that era too.
I'm glad to see that the welder you chose was not a Harbor Freight special
I think we get a kick out of everything you do April, That was so cool you are awesome, glad to see you enjoying what you love
Thank you April, looks great! I'm 63 & just re-learning how to weld with wire feed and also teaching an 11 year old boy how to weld so he has a choice of a good trade job if he chooses.
Man I need a Lincoln Electric!!!
I'm so jealous of Cody! I wish I had a clone of you as my wife to work on projects with. It sucks having to do everything by myself, I need a helper!
Rollo Larson I would but, I'm single.
I married a prissy princess, only lasted 15 years...
Welding tips and tricks is my favorite channel, actually I start welding with this channel too. Thumbs up for your courage to start welding.
Great project for a beginner. You're obviously a fast learner. Welding is a fantastic skill to have as a maker. It'll give new dimensions to the already outstanding projects you build.
Love the sawdust man with hat and glasses! Great videos!!
Was thinking I was the only one who noticed that. Like a mini Madam Trash Heap (Fraggle Rock) very funny!
Made me think of Cousin It.
thats what i thought a sawdust cousin of cousin It
I'm glad she was welding far enough away that he didn't die
You are one awesome young lady !!! Be sure to strap that argon bottle to the wall if you do not get a cart soon. They can be very dangerous. The size bottle you are using is very easy to tip. Happy welding :)
Was about to mention the same thing.. Good call
Yeah and not turn it open that close to your face, i had 2 people @ work dead by heaving 1 breath of argon.
Be sure never to open the valve in closed space en close it when not used!!!
That's not argon. That's C25.
+benshke - Argon is non-toxic, in fact it is present in the atmosphere naturally. The only way Argon can harm you is by causing asphyxiantion (breathing it instead of oxygen), and that would require much more than "1 breath".
we had 2 death's on my work due to 2mucht argon in a closed area. Les oxygen and 2 much argon.
Great job there April! You can't get better than Jody at Welding Tips and Tricks. He is a fantastic Instructor!
April, I have to say I have been welding since I was very young. I took welding in school and worked as an ironworker. For that to be your first time welding I'm impressed. Great job!
April I read what the fellow said about claims. You made no claims, you never said you were accomplished at welding. You did what I always have done. You took your time and came out on top. It was a great video and I am proud to call you friend on here. Good job. Some people just need to get a life.
I see you have a new shop buddy. Must be pretty cool cause of the sunglasses and hat... ;)
I was thinking Dusty the Hut
Cousin Chip.
Looks like Cousin It (from Addams Family)
My first thought, too....LOL
Haha I'm glad so many people saw him. I wasn't sure if anybody would.
Great to see you welding April, what a good idea for your first project.. Very practical...looking forward to seeing what else you create with your new skills! 👌🏼
I am really glad to see that there is another person that gets as excited as I do about new tools !!!!! Welding opens up a whole new world to the do-it-yourselfer ,do have fun April,,,,,,,,,,S. Rich..
Got a great laugh at 1:30 when I saw sawdust man.
Awesome to have a welder. Or in jimmy diresta's case a waelder lol.
Great video. I did the same and learned by watching RUclips and fixed my utility trailer with no major problems. I did practice laying down beads but only for a few hours then fixed my trailer. I am much better at it now but the welds have held up even if one is pretty ugly. I also use the flux core wire since I don't want to buy the gas for a few times per year I need to weld something. Great video.
Glad to see a new welder using PPE and quality tools. Good luck with your fabrications!
What the heck!!!! First time welder lol those welds look amazing 👌🏼
not a bad first welding project.
Congratulations, nice project.
Jodi on Welding Tips and Tricks is THE expert on welding, both for beginners and experienced tradesmen. Good luck with your welding.
What a project to tackle! Very exciting. My dad was a welder. And an artist. Pretty sure that's where I get my desire to be a maker. I've never really thought about doing any welding. Not sure what I would need it for. But.... good to know that it's not a far reach. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
great idea. what year is the truck. i like it too
72. : )
Great job!. Next project?? A welding cart to hold the welder and bottle. Remember, if that bottle falls over and the top breaks off it becomes a missile. Safety first :-)
And I HAVE seen a bottle do that too so really... SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY
But that's fun as hell! forget safety!
Many years ago, and I mean many, when I was in the 9th grade a young student knocked a full bottle over in shop class. When it fell the valve hit a piece of metal laying on the floor and it broke off. The bottle took off like a bat out of hell and went across the shop, through a roll up door and out into the yard. It then smacked a block building which sent it in another direction where it finally came to rest under the goal post. Sure glad there were no kids on the field that day.
+The Radio Shop absolutely correct in technical school I saw something similar and it went through 3 cinder block walls before it stopped at the fourth wall. Luckily no one was injured
Thom spillane cinder blocks are brittle, one person would stop it haha. I'm just having fun with this, but you do need to be really damned careful with those. Compressed gas is awesome. A water heater can take out a whole house and leave a hole. Really cool from a distance. :))
Great Idea April - and good job with the execution! This one is going on my task list. My bed liner makes putting a full sheet in kind of tight and that will solve the problem.
I know how you feel. I bought the Lincoln 140 a few months ago but it's still in the box 😫 I've yet to finish rearranging my wood shop to make room for everything. But it won't be long and I will be welding everything in site lol. You laid down some nice beads on your truck job so if I were you I would be very happy and proud. I love watching your shows so please keep them coming.
Thank you April
Whenever I see a tank standing free without a cap on it, I get nervous. I figured there would already be a bunch of comments on this, but that argon/CO2 tank needs to be secured. You can build a cart for the welder and tank, with storage below the welder for things like extra wire spools, contact tips, nozzles, etc.
nah. just shoot bottle rockets at it.
the problem you might have is going down the road and the wind will get under the sheets of plywood and blow them out of your truck, you might need to use tie downs
Of course, strapping down the wood is definitely still required.
You can add some kind of lock mechanism (idk, maybe toggle clamps) to the edges of the rack, so there will be no need to strap.
With welding tips and tricks and Jesse Combs you're off to a good start as a welder/fabricator. Good video, clever project for your truck. Next build a nice rolling weld cart for your awesome Lincoln Welder.
Quick tip, even on short welds, get in the habit of tacking both ends before running the bead. Break long beads down in half, then half again with tacks until you have beads spaced 4-6" apart, then connect the dots. This will help prevent warping as you run your bead.
Keep up the good work and practice your hood flip.
Oh yeah, also my father was a machinist, a master engine mechanic and finally, built and rebuilt vintage Formula 1 race cars. He taught me to TIG weld, and could always find an opportunity to slip in the fact that he's never had a weld fail... and that at 200 mph, a fail would be manslaughter. AND HE TAUGHT HIMSELF. He worked in a machine shop in his early twenties and would stay after for a couple of hours everyday just dropping beads, over and over. Keep doing it, teach yourself. Yer killing it.
I knew you were cool after a few vids then Damn is saw your c10 then I smiled big.
Lol, you can judge a girl by her truck. ; )
Sparks & sawdust are a scary combination. My workshop is a lot larger than yours so I can keep my woodwork and welding at opposite ends of the work space. Please be very careful in your shop after making sparks. In my shop I like to linger for a half hour after metal working just to be sure I haven't missed anything smoldering. You're going to love metal working!
Yep, I ended up switching to my husband's shop to get away from the saw dust. Until I can get a bigger shop and keep them separate I'll weld in his to be safe.
im impressed your welds look really strong and seeing the metal getting hot on the other side proves your fusion is strong well done
Really cool project! I just got a welder for the first time and was thinking of a way I could build a storage container/rack setup for my truck bed. You gave me some great ideas, thank you!
Hey April, good job for a first timer. By the way, how do you plan to hold the plywood down on the truck ?
I was thinking the same, when the wind gets under the sheets of plywood, it will be a force to recon with!
could just wrap a bungee cord around it, it wont go anywhere
The wind won't go down into the truckbed - it will flow over it. There is too little gap between the sides to affect it. A few sheets is also really heavy and when they are stacked they won't go apart; thus the wind will have to pick them all up; which again won't happen. A couple of bungees as suggested won't hurt though.
a couple of spring clamps or even an F-clamp, attached to the side strut, laying flush on the surface before tightening should be more than enough to keep it from rising up
She has said in other comments on this same subject, she will continue to strap it down, just like she always has in the past.
gulp... fabricate, too? you rock girl!
Hi April Greetings from South Africa . I enjoy your videos very much, I think you are a remarkable s person and an inspiration to many girls and boys around the globe. I have been an amateur woodworker / welder for many years myself. Used stick welding for years but recently changed to mig. I have observed that if you clean the metal , grind or flap disc, the mig welds are much neater and I suppose stronger. Too many people have become too lazy to do simple work for themselves. Skills are hard earned and practice makes perfect, but it is so much easier if you have someone like a father or grandfather to teach you the tricks of the trade. Keep up the good work and thank you for passing it on. Regards MJ
Love it April. Great to see you doing Welding now as well.
loved your video and the helmet flip :)))))))) weld on girl :)))
gas bottle should be tied to a bench before you put on a regulator for safety. If it falls over and breaks off the regulator it can become a rocket.
I love how you get so excited when you get a new tool--that is awesome--seriously though, I want to learn how to weld and this video was perfect--thank you April
It's hard not to get excited. Welding has been on my wish list for a while so it was really fun being able to jump into it.
congrats on learning how to weld!! its a very good skill to learn! also jodi on welding tips and tricks is an amazing welder and im sure you would learn a lot from him, he does great work.
PLEASE please please chain the argon bottle to the wall. Very nice machine.
No worries, I will.
Safety concerns aside (bottle and sawdust) great job! I think that might be my next project with my power I-mig welder.
+April Wilkerson Красивая улыбка 👍
@Thomas Jones Care to elaborate on the sawdust issue with a gas cylinder? getting into TIG and have everything setup and strapped onto a welding cart, but planning to keep doing woodworking along with metalworking in my shop.
I would guess Thomas is referring to the bottle and sawdust as 2 separate issues. 1: an unsecured bottle in use without the cap over the valve is a risk of explosion if it gets knocked over and the valve breaks off. And 2: sawdust being very flammable while you are throwing sparks all over with a welder and / or grinder.
Well done. Welding is fun hobby. Greetings from (cold and far) finland! .. Btw.. ChuckE2009 -youtube channel; Good videos of stick welding.
BUMP chuckey 2009 is a verry good channel
Yeehaw
He's also nearby in Texas....
yeah, i wrote it too haha
Yeah he is in the Dallas area.
Nice job April. I also do a lot of welding projects. The last one was a. log arch and 36 inch bandsaw mill that took me about a month to complete. lol Slow and steady after a stroke. Enjoy your videos. Stay safe.
What a clever project. I'm going to make that for my truck! If you don't already have some get a few "C" clamps for holding items together for welding/alignment.
Great video!
Eric
Hi April, was this your original idea? Its brilliant!
: ) Yes it was. Thank you.
chain your tank to the wall. If it falls over and the regulator breaks off you'll have a missile
Great job, April! I really like that idea and might have to make a set myself. Glad to see you having fun with something new as well.
Best wishes,
Tom Z
Hey April awesome video!! A nice trick I learned for getting a straight cuts on a piece of angle iron or square tubing when you don't have a proper metal band saw is to use a miter box. Claiming your material to a miter box with the use of a reciprocating saw will help you cut angles you will most commonly need.
Just a a quick tip I learned and would like to share. I really enjoyed your first welding project.
Watching this made me laugh :o) You did very well for your first time welding, mig is the easiest welding process, next go around get yourself a box of 1/8th 7018 welding rod and try stick welding. As for helmet flip you rarely have to do it with auto darkening helmets that's the advantage of them you can see your work piece with the helmet down. Noticed you were wearing your thumb ring, don't weld with that on if it ever gets hot you will get one nasty burn. Keep one thing in mind the arc that comes off mig welding can burn skin in no time flat. I can weld for hours stick welding with no gloves on I can't do that with mig welding. Metal working might be your new calling or another way to express your creativity time for you to get a plasma cutter.
Are you sure you haven't welded before this 😂 if not you are a fast learner
Nope, but I enjoy being able to pick up new skills.
April Wilkerson я влюбился в эти золотые умелые руки. я сварщик. и мне приятно наблюдать.
Brayden Kornegay yeah i think you are right because i am also a welder the working style of the lady is very professional and way she is welding proves that she is a good welder......
hulk mania 12

Great project and so cool to see you tackle (again) something you are unfamiliar with but want to learn. Also, I like that everyone has your back and is letting you know about the tank being secure. I'm not a welder - so very good information.
Yeah my subs are the best! I think most people realize that I don't know much but am willing to learn so they offer up advice freely. I learn so much from the comments alone.
Thanks April, you just taught an old dog a new trick, Also will put the Power Mig 210 on my shopping list. Great to see young people doing things
I just get a kick out of watching you! Smart, pretty, can do attitude, you drive a truck and live in Texas. Wished you were my neighbor. Nice first welding project too.
ok rookie CHAIN THAT BOTTLE TO A HARD ANCHOR POINT ! if it goes over & the valve gets knocked off it will become a rocket u will not want to be in the way of
You should be really proud april! It took me almost 2 years of practicing whenever I could at work to get welds as clean as that! Keep up the great work! Can't wait to see what projects come next now you're welding aswell :)
Great project and those welds looked pretty good. They were smooth and not all globbed up. Great work!
please don't weld in your wood shop
sirHHO l was noticing the wood shaving aswell. 😂
No kidding.
Welding in wood shop is fine. Its not a gun powder shop she will be ok guaranteed.
Nice job and great idea! I own a Lincoln that is over 20 years old and it still welds like new.
Excellent work April. You're an all round DIY gal now, can't wait for more welding :D
A simple, ingenious design and a nice first welding project. Great job!
Welding is such a useful skill, you just unlocked so many future projects 😊
I love to see woman with this enthusiasm for a machine. Great job April.
One of my favorite videos of yours! So cool to see you expanding your knowledge base. Now I want one!
Love your video's, love the look and excitement on your face when you open the box of a new tool, reminds me of myself.
Out standing! Very good project ma'am. Thank you for your projects, they have been very helpful.
Great Job on your first time wielding April. When I started, they only had stick wielding or brazing. Once you master the flow on one, the others come easier.
After my boy saw your welding video, he was inspired to create a welding tank, a welding mask holder and other welding related things out of his lego. He used a straw as the hose from the welding tank. We think u r awesome!
never ceased to be amazed at your videos. Well done!
Excellent job young lady 👍🏻
Welcome to the Fabrication world where EVERYTHING will get criticized to the SMALLEST detail....keep up the good work, you’ve earned my support 👍🏻
New subscriber 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks April for all your videos - they're very encouraging. Keep up the good work.
My dad retired as a pipefitter (welder) after forty years. I've never learned to weld, since it's always intimidated me having to know the settings and all. This rig looks like it makes it pretty easy. I might have to look into welding after all. Thanks!
absolutely love the truck!!! and what a great project to add to it. I have been looking for a shop truck for a while and this video will help with the rack I build when find one. thanks!
Hey April. You're incredibly brave to try learning new skills on an open forum such as RUclips. I am sure there are critics but I see you as an inspiration. Your content is awesome and getting better. Great work mate! I hope you get to come over to Australia someday soon 👍🏽
I just bought my first mig welder. I haven't used it yet. I look forward to watch you learn to use yours as I learn to use mine
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing your project. I just got a mig welder and am learning through the videos also. Good luck and thanks again. 👍
Love your truck and your enthusiasm!! You go girl! Love to see women doing cool stuff!
Great job as usual... Easy to set up and take down, I like the minimalist design!
Really well done, you picked up welding quick, your welds look really good quality. I like the truck bed rack, simple and effective.
Awesome job and great idea... you've given me an idea for a kind of reverse type bracket for my truck now. It's too small for a sheet of plywood to fit inside the bed.
that's very very nice seen someone that wants to learn slot stuff and it helps around the house I watch all your videos and I told my wife look at her and thats good that not every person wants to learn slot stuff ..I like to learn by looking videos ,is so streesfull when is about to learn new machines but at the end is feels good because you get to goals what you want and is great...thanks alot
