I think 1.3 may have been the first version with LAN, which also means the first version to be running an internal server so you can switch it to a LAN game at any time
I dont know what exactly causes stuff like the fireballs, but I do know that multiplayer was still kind of buggy around that time compared to singleplayer so switching to an internal sever introduced some weird bugs, I'd guess it's probably related.
