Well, the advice in the video was to simply not ride through snow drifts because coming back through them may be impassable, especially if you're riding alone. That, in turn, can turn into some very VERY long hikes (as was observed by 20 miles of footprints in the video), long rescues, and even emergency button presses, if not worse. However, looking at just a few of the comments and after receiving a few texts from my northern friends, perhaps the advice I've given here is poor advice? What do you think?

As a guy who went solo on a totally iced out forest road on a Ducati Desert Sled and almost got marooned, I agree! Screw snow and ice. Video on my channel if ya wanna watch :)

With my ~30 years of riding experience it is always when you are tired, and worked up, when something goes wrong. That is when your gear will get tested. That said, I was in a very similar situation on the last big ride that we did, and I also geared down due to overheating. Glad you all made it out without any issues.
Here in BC we used to do a fair amount of 4-wheeling in the snow, and I always HATED it. It is like mud that never ends.

Riding snow definitely requires a healthy awareness of your surroundings among other things. I live in the Sierra Nevada so it's a bit second nature up here, but it's still not particularly fun pushing your bike through tonnes of snow.
    Good stuff, Tyler!

What? I live in NW Washington. If you dont ride in the snow, you dont ride all winter. Use MotoZ Desert HT tires and plow through the snow like its a dry dusty dirt road. I even towed my buddy on his DRZ-SM with street tires on it theough drift after drift. Its just part of living where I live. Still. Today, 100% of road and trails are snow covered down to about 2500foot level. And the shaded area dont melt until july. I am not giving up 8 to 9 months a year riding to avoid snow. Change to those MotoZ tires I mentioned. I ride a DRZ as your can tell by my channel name. Keep doing what you do. Been a long time follower from back in the early Black widow days. I also have made a set of snow tires....for the truly deep stuff. 1/4×1.5 inch long bolts with 2 nuts all the way through my tread from inside to out. Adds about 5 lbs to each tire. As there are ober 100 bolts in each tire....acts nearly the same as a timber sled...until it gets too deep.

After moving to north Idaho, I have had to deal with snow drift. I wouldn't recommend it for 95 percent of people, but for the crazy 5 percent. if you want to do snow drifts imagine drifts as super sand, all gas, and you must ride on top of them, never let off the throttle just control with the clutch. I would also recommend dual sport studs, they aren't sketchy on street but are a game changer on snow and ice.

I rode through my first snow drift at 12. Head height and about four bike lengths worth. But across a paved road. I hit it at 60mph and got 3/4 through before digging the rest of the way. I went riding on the other side and came back through to come home. It was a lot easier coming back.

Great ride! Also anyone who has adventured knows that there are times and places where you will move a bike without gear on. In a perfect world that would not happen but this is your world and what you do with it is no ones concern but yours. . I don't know why people comment on videos correcting others behaviors. That is one reason I would not be able to do what you do. I would tell people where to stick it when they correct me. LOL you are a great person and keep it up.

The snow can be such a chore to get through. In Nevada right next door to Utah it gets so slippery as it turns everything in the desert into mud. I have been out on the GSA so many time wishing I hadn't gone as far as I did. Looks like you guys still had a pretty good time.
