Living in the corn belt, this is something I look forward to every summer. I'll go out of my way to watch a crop duster working a field. I've seen some pretty amazing acrobatics over the years, lol.
GoPro's internal microphone leave a LOT to be desired. That being said, I'll use a good quality External microphone so the sound doesn't sound like the mic's hiding in a bucket of water. You'd be amazed at the difference.
When I watched this video, I felt as if you were Valcor from The Never Ending Story, and I was along for the ride. What a great adventure! Thanks for posting! I know how hard you've worked, and I'm proud of you.
Hey Bobby! Yea we get pretty close sometimes. In the old days they would drag their wheels through the crop but now we usually stay 8'-10' (boom height) above it.
I worked for a crop dusting training school as a mechanic and chemical mixer when I first got out of college. They had an AT-301, a 985 powered Ag-Cat, Cessna Ag Wagon and a few Piper Pawnees. Did a lot of tires and brake jobs. I remember we had a P&W r-1340 that had a sticking valve problem and backfired a lot. Never could find which damn cylinder was causing the problem, ended up swapping engines. We almost lost the plane on a flight when it backfired while the pilot was diving into the field with the pump propeller turning. When it backfired the can that is supposed to catch the backfires at the bottom of the cowling blew the spring off and made contact with the pump prop causing it to disintegrate and fly into the oil reservoir. He made it back after doing an emergency tank dump, with the last bit of oil draining out of the reservoir when he shut off the engine. I loved hearing that engine fire up every morning.
Patrick i know you fly by the seat of your pants but holy cow that air speed indicator likes the 3 oclock area ! didnt hear the stall buzzer though . quite a bit different in your ag cat !
fly wayne No stall buzzer in that plane. Ag cat is a little different mostly becaise it is more forgiving and there is a lot more warning before the stall breaks. The Air Tractor will talk to you also but you have to listen more attentively. I have a video in my channel of this 301 starting to buffet before a stall and you can hear the airplane start to shake.
Is a 301 full aerobatic? There is a wrecked one for sale I'm interested in... if I take off all the spray equipment... I'm thinking it would make for a fast little fun plane.
That is a heads up display that gives me GPS information that includes my pass number, how many feet I am off of my line and the direction (left or right), ground speed and it also gives me the angle of interception with my line. It is very important that we stay within a few feet of where we are supossed to be to ensure proper coverage.
As dangerous and deadly as it can be! Not only these pilots are flying at 2 feet above de crops and at 100 mph, but they have to watch for birds, power lines, trees, obstacles, irrigation lines, wind, a forgotten shovel in the middle of the field, spectators...!
On small paddocks like this one I sometimes wonder if it would be quicker just spraying in one direction and just do circuits instead of the forwards backwards with long turns.
Yes, most all modern agriculture aircraft have air conditioning. In the old days they flew with the windows open, but this also exposed the pilot to the harsh chemicals. The addition of air conditioning has made flying long hours much easier on the pilots.
The only school that will put you in the seat of an ag plane is the school of hard knocks. Go get a job on the ground at a local crop dusting service and work your way up from there.
+Patrick Cohen i have before.. in gilbert louisiana.. for donald wayne goodman.. he was killed a while back on a race track in monroe.. i know how to mix chemicals and fuel. wash and move the planes around. and ive learned how to crank a few. but i wanna go farther.. ive flown in them at that time.. i wanna do more.
+Dewayne Jordan Get back out there working on the ground, get your commercial pilots license and start looking for a job. The last thing anyone wants to hear is "I've loaded before and already know how to do that". We hear that a lot. Hey out there and prove yourself through hard work and dedication.
Wow, those are some STEEP bank angles! What keeps it from stalling when you're banking like that? Are you moving like a bat out of hell or something? I don't understand where your vertical lift would be coming from when you're doing 80 - 90 degree banks like that!
+Troy G Thanks Troy. It keeps me from getting knocked out when turbulent air throws my head into the roll cage. BTW that is the same helmet fighter pilots wear in their f-18's and its not made for crash impact protection. Good to see you know what you're talking about. Cheers!
Haha sorry. I guess I can admit to being the idiot for that comment then. Anyway, mad props to your skills. I would be so lost on the turns but I probably wouldn't make it to the turns because I would likely crash into the woods first.
Doesn't look nearly as fun from this point of view as from the ground. Looks basically like your risking your neck for a monotonous job high risk job in a heavy fragile kit loaded with chemicals. If the trees don't get you the chemicals eventually will. Not a whole lot of job security either, as any farmer on a tractor with a sprayer setup can replace you. Good luck to you.
Where I live there is getting to be a few choppers spraying there fun to watch spray also. What are the operating cost of airplane with fuel and other expenses per hour?

Thanks for the video, and also thank you for NOT adding music. I like the natural sounds better.
Dusty Stewart I can't stand it when ppl do that! If we wanted to hear music we'd be watching a music video....

Enjoying going through all your videos. Was a loader when I was 14 - 17 years old back in the 70’s in Mississippi! Brings back memories.

Thanks for the ride. Always amazes me how you can find and keep "on the mark" at that speed.....never mind the trees and power-lines coming at you ;-)
Hey Bobby! Yea we get pretty close sometimes. In the old days they would drag their wheels through the crop but now we usually stay 8'-10' (boom height) above it.
I always wondered how you guys knew what you have already sprayed and what not...Now I know. Awesome video man.
That read out on the cowl is the bomb.
Love watching crop dusters, wish i could go up one time while they were spraying.
Very good job Patrick!! Amazing video!!!

Terry Presnal Dang! Talk about bad luck.
I remember putting 125 gals in the plane on a hot day. Ag Aviation has come a long way since then. Nice video
must been in cessna
Excellent video
Awesome video thanks for sharing hope you have more to share.
Check out my channel, I have quite a few ag flying videos
Will do thanks.
Patrick Cohen
Thanks for the ride,, and the bit of editing.
THANKS Pat..Gr8 video!!
That looks so fun, what a job..
Amazing skill!
Larry Hottle Many hours.
Congratulations, Good Job!
That was great, Thanks for posting
I have flown in F-4C Phantom jet fighters as well as other military aircraft.
but today I saw a crop duster in action......WOW !
SHIT HOT !
Most definitely Shit Hot flying!
hey patrick bobby here! thats pretty cool, made me a little dizzy at times, i didn't realize how close to the crop yoiu actually get!
All I Hear Within Myself Is; Bank Angle! & Pull Up/Terrain! Lol Nice Video
Amazing skill.
DAMN ! that's aviation skills on steroids.
All right, thanks for letting me get on the plane and fly with you, but when you make the turns on the plane I compress against the seat. Angel
Excellent
my friends dad did this in the same plane. he was killed when he hit powerlines when he made a late climb. keep on your toes and eyes on new lines

This looks fcking dangerous! Love it!
I'm glad you fly pretty good, because I was wondering how you were gonna repay me for all those smokes you bummed in Long Beach.
Hah, I bummed more from the Moroccans! BTW, if you don't subscribe to my channel then we aren't friends anymore.
Patrick Cohen you assume that we are friends and that's where you messed up! Haha
Well... I guess I will have to bum from someone else next year.. 😟
Well, that was intense.
I think is see a Names and Numbers note stuck to the dash on the right. Where are spraying? Mo, KS? I recognize it since i live in SEK.
No that was in Rochester Indiana. Those are waypoints on that paper, probably fuel stops on my flight there but I cant remember.
Patrick Cohen we had 20 acres as a kid in Fulton County. I’ve probably watched you work. Stay sAfe!
CHEMTRAILS! just kidding :) This is a great video, good work!
siempre e querido pilotear unos de estos ojala algún día tenga la oprtunidad
Se requiere esfuerzo y un poco de suerte para empezar.
The Best Job in the World. I wish i had learnt to Fly. Do the sprays come on Automatically linked to the GPS or Pilot Operated?
No music blaring. Thank you. You need voice activated computers like Captain Kirk.
Awesome
So what's it like, flying in the cockpit of Dusty Crophopper's prototype?
Sweet... I thought my flight profiles can be demanding!
Is a 301 full aerobatic? There is a wrecked one for sale I'm interested in... if I take off all the spray equipment... I'm thinking it would make for a fast little fun plane.
I bet that Pratt & Whitney chews through the avgas like no tomorrow.... how many gallons per hour?
No not at all. It has a flat bottom wing with dihedreal and if you even put one in a spin you will have a very bad day.
+Patrick Cohen damn that sucks :-(
+Patrick Cohen I bid on it anyway... I want that radial engine... ;-)
+PC5032 Good luck with that! A P&W 1340 cost about $40,000 to rebuild so don't pay too much.
What GPS system do yo use?
What are the lights out near the engine?
That is the heads up display for the gps guidance system that we use to fly straight lines through the field.
@@pcohen85 cool thanks😊
nice.
Ever sprayed the wrong field by accident?
Yes a couple of times. It is a very expensive mistake.
Patrick Cohen Your flying is perfect.
Hello Patrick. What is that light bar looking thing out on the cowl?
That is a heads up display that gives me GPS information that includes my pass number, how many feet I am off of my line and the direction (left or right), ground speed and it also gives me the angle of interception with my line. Forgotten shovel? someone digging a ditch planted one high. i missed it by 1 foot. Fist days of Ag. watch for new ditches afterwards.
that plane 120 new turbine 140
man I would love to have a job like this... what kind of licends do you have?!?
you have to be able to speel. :)
Hoy many acres did you fly?
During that video? Probably 40 or 50. In a whole year I will cover about 100,000
Cool man! Than you
On small paddocks like this one I sometimes wonder if it would be quicker just spraying in one direction and just do circuits instead of the forwards backwards with long turns.
Bruce Baxter No it would never be faster to do it that way.
I wonder if everything seems in slow motion after he gets out of this airplane.
Yes, to go from 140-150 mph back to zero has a drastic effect on the pilot.
how much do you charge per spray? im planing on making my own business in other country
back then it was 300 dollar a acre now its 700
do those planes have air conditioning?
A lot of them do. The one in this video had AC but it did not work.
Yes, most all modern agriculture aircraft have air conditioning. In the old days they flew with the windows open, but this also exposed the pilot to the harsh chemicals. The addition of air conditioning has made flying long hours much easier on the pilots.
im seeking legit info on going to school for this in louisiana... any help?? im serious... no jokin.

how hard is it to find a crop duster job? im looking into an adventurous career.
It's pretty hard if you don't already have a foot in the door somewhere.
Why are u speading up the film?
I didnt speed anything up. This is real time.

it looks so fragile
Air tractor, not a very sexy name for an aircraft but looks fun to fly
10:45
Just throws a fart on the camera guy 😶🌫️💀
Look like any mistake your last this is not your average roller coaster ride
I hate to break it to you sir... but I don't think your helmet is gonna do you much good..
+Troy G Thanks Troy. It keeps me from getting knocked out when turbulent air throws my head into the roll cage. BTW that is the same helmet fighter pilots wear in their f-18's and its not made for crash impact protection. Good to see you know what you're talking about. Cheers!

Sounds like you've got it all figured out.
So many fun way's to put chemical on our food
But this one is the most fun. And pays $400 per flight hour
@@pcohen85 yup I know
