    Something like that happened to me once. It was 9th grade science. The rocket arced over and plunged under thrust just like yours did. There were three of us working as a group. I was the only one who had previously flown model rockets. I found that the upper stage engine had been put in upside down. I discussed it wtih my lab partners and one of them uttered those immortal words 'What difference does it make?" I was so careful to make sure the engines did not get mixed up, because my brother had warned me that had happened when he was in 9th grade, but I did not check the orientation. It just seemed so obvious the nozzle end goes down, that I did not mention it to my lab partners. The ejection charge destroyed the booster and damaged the engine mount on the sustainer. The DSE (Detectable Seismic Event) at the end made a bit of a mess of the sustainer. One of my lab partners insisted on repairing it and flying as a single stage, but the balance was off and it did not fly well. Hint: do not replace card board engine mounting rings with rings made out of 1/4" masonite hardboard without adding weight to the nose to keep the center of gravity in front of the center of pressure. Watching cheerleaders do cartwheels is one thing, but rockets doing cartwheels when there are a couple dozen kids standing around is less entertaining. With that said, keep up the good work, I'm enjoying your channel.

      @@Finness894 Glad you liked it. If you ever get the chance to read the safety section of the old Estes yellow pages in the 1969 to 1971 catalogs, you will find that attention to safety is what made model rocketry possible. We need to all work together and share information to keep that commitment going if the hobby is to grow and continue. The first Estes catalog was published in 1961. I helped my older brother launch his first rocket in 1970. The misunderstanding and hostility with which we had to deal seemed endless. "The rockets are not fireworks. They are legal. They are safe. We are not breaking the law". In the 1980s the Boy Scouts added a model rocketry badge at the urging of President Reagan. That was a huge victory.

    Wow , total destruction of the Omega and damage to the Heliroc ! Sorry my good friend. Your post flight debriefings are always so good, with this one being sad , but you found the point of error. I'm still learning and (crashing) too! Ohhh , but how sweet are those "perfect perfect - nice nice nice" flights that we have ! Happy Thanksgiving .. my friend

    Dude! That was both awesome and horrible! I am glad it was out in the middle of nowhere. Seeing that come in under power was pretty wild! Hope to see it fly again.

    Tough break on the loss of your rocket. At least nobody was hurt, and as I use to tell my kids, sometimes mistakes are how we learn.

    Ooohhh, sorry to see such a nice rocket go down. Hope you ate enough turkey to drown your sorrow. Happy Thanksgiving and better flights ahead!!!

      @professorjones8022 Yeah I really liked that Omega had many great flights. Getting rebuilt. And will rise again soon.

    Happy Thanksgiving Keith
    Wow. Well def explains the acceleration downward and the longest “0” delay in a booster 🧐. Plus side. Ya got a positive attitude, you like to show your mistakes and you move forward.
    Keep em coming. Wish I lived closer, would love to be flying. Have more kits now then I can ever build and still no place to fly. 😒

    Before the debriefing on the Omega, I thought “oh man, I wonder if he got the motors reversed by mistake…” sorry for your mishap. Happy thanksgiving, sir 👍

    What a day at the launch field!! I was thinking, the only way that could happen is if you put an engine with delay in the booster. Sure enough! May I suggest that you don't load engines into rockets the night before a launch. This mistake would likely never occur if you loaded the engines in the field prior to launching. Where was your range safety officer? :) Seriously, sorry for the total destruction of your Omega. That debris field was more impressive than I have ever seen from a model rocket "powered into ground" incident. Great attitude as usual. Peace and Happy Thanksgiving!

    Keith, what would have been the outcome if you had a cineroc camera sitting up there? , can you imagine? It makes me cringe to just the thought of that! Happy thanksgiving to you and all your friends 😊

    wow...i never seen a staging in the down orintation...seen the staging horizontal...what a loss....but a 5sec. delay in the booster will cause a major issue....there is a silver lining to this...."it wont ever happen again"

  • @geraldscott4302
    @geraldscott4302 3 дня назад +1

    My guess is that for some reason (defective first stage engine) there was a delay in igniting the second stage engine, allowing the second stage to reach apogee, then turn and start falling nose first toward the ground before the second stage engine ignited.

    Wish the Jolly Logic had survived. Would have been cool to have known how fast it was going and how many G's at impact. Long ago a friend of mine tried a four-stage rocket, which was marginal on weight. His almost did the same thing but it was moving horizontally during the last two stages firing. It ended up far, far away over the trees. We never found it.

    My worst rocket disaster involved Phantom Diamondback... the up part was great but the twist lock wasn't secured and it popped the top part and the bottom half lawn darted into the ground.

    • @Nlangkirby135
      @Nlangkirby135 День назад

      Phantom Diamondback was my first Mean Machine that was shortened so it can fly again. I am afraid that it had its last flight.

  • @ddegn
    @ddegn 3 дня назад +1

    You not sure that counts as a disaster. No property damage other than the rocket isn't too bad. I broke some tiles on someone's roof once with a model airplane. This wasn't really a disaster since the guy was nice let us fix his roof.
