Part 8: • China Mac on China Bui...
Part 1: • China Mac on Asian Gra...
    --------
China Mac continued to speak on Black and Asian relations by addressing the topic of Asian businesses operating in impoverished Black neighborhoods. He pointed out that it's usually Asian immigrants opening up businesses in Black neighborhoods and not American-born Asians. China Mac said Asian immigrants often open businesses in Black neighborhoods because it's cheaper, there's a need or demand for the service, and there's less competition.
However, China Mac acknowledged that the tension stems from the language barrier, Asians' preconceived notions of Blacks due to the media, and the fact that the business owners do not live in the neighborhoods that they profit from. China Mac stated that he wants to be a bridge between both communities while changing the narrative and negative stereotypes regarding the Asian community.

My family is one of these families that own a grocery store in the hoods. We have a small 2 bedroom home in the back of the store. Yes, it was dangerous. We’ve been robbed a couple of times. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Living in the community, I learned that people are people. We had issues with some customers, but we had some great relationships with even more. The good people outweigh the bad. We were a part of the community and the customers were like a part of our family. Many of our customers addressed my parents as “Mom” and “Dad”. We see generations from birth to the grave. I’ve attended several of our customers funerals. During birthday celebrations or holidays, customers would bring us plates from their homes. This is where I learned to love soul food. I’m so proud of China Mac. He’s definitely making waves. The Black and Asian communities will rise up together! Much love and happiness to all race and creed! We all deserve much more than we is going on right now. I pray that everyone is safe and healthy!

He's right, even black folks with good credit don't want to open stores in the hood for the most part. Some black people have opened businesses in the hood and wound up getting robbed or killed so it's dangerous regardless who is running the business.

Pretty much. Older guy that worked as a security guard at my high school had a bar that he ran some years back with family. The area was getting increasingly dangerous over the years in the 2000s but they hadn't had many problems. Then one night while closing up some dudes came in one day to rob the place and even though they had armed protection behind the counter and what not, he said fuck it and let them take the money to protect himself and staff there. Then right after that he shut the bar down because he decided it wasn't worth it anymore.

Back when i was in HS, I remember a particular day when we were all acting out in class. The professor decided to have a sit and talk to us about the importance of our education and the environment we are surrounded by and how it's set up. He mentioned majority of these Asians open up their business corner stores in black and brown communities, where they sell liquor and tobacco. They make big profit of the black and brown community because we are the only fools that go and buy a bottle of water for $2.19 when they got water fountains at school for free. When they want to sell their business, they sell it to their own. That's how they look out for one another and come up. He lastly told us that the only way to change things around, is to get an education and to support our black and brown businesses.
PS: Not trying to talk down on the Asian community because I have lot's of Asian friends and are some of the most nicest people I've come across.

I was reflecting on this very topic a few days ago. I was thinking about my own negative experiences that i’ve had with Asian merchants within the Los Angeles area as a black man. A lot of them are newly arrived immigrants who speak little to no english and that always presents difficulties. A lot of problems and misunderstandings between the black community and working class Asian immigrant communities could be mitigated if the language barrier didn’t exists. However because the language barrier does exists, it creates misunderstandings that cause tension and resentment between the two groups. I think a lot of them already have built in prejudices and stereotypes about black people that they observe in the media and any black person who lives up to those stereotypes just bolsters their prejudices. I’ve personally seen the look of disgust on Asian merchants faces when black people are in their stores, i’ve personally had Asian merchants shamelessly FOLLOW us every step of the way around a store to make sure that we weren’t stealing. He didn’t know enough English to say “hello” and “welcome to my store, let me know if you need anything” but he sure knew to profile and stereotype us from the moment we walked in the door. These type of occurrences have been the cause of Asian Vs Black tension in our communities for decades now.

This is all facts! My parents were immigrants with a chinese restaurant in the hood south bronx 1980s! I spent my childhood sheltered and sitting under a counter in the restaurant, staying quiet and out of the way. My parents never had time for me working 13 hour days, 7 days! I had no friends, no tv or anything before the time of internet or anything. I was never allowed to step outside unless they had to take me somewhere. Gang activity was normal. We'd get robbed a few times a year and people robbing us would hold guns to my head at 5 years old so my parents would give them money and they'd just loot the store and lock us all in the walk in freezer. I had seen my father get pistol whipped in the face. Seeing his scars always remind me of those days. We needed to watch the streets and our backs whenever it was closing time cause they'd usually come then. As a kid it's incredible what you think is normal when growing up in certain environments! I still felt we were lucky never to have been killed. As an adult looking back I don't hold any bad feelings. I knew the neighborhood was impoverished and drug ridden! I actually had a harder time dealing with racism in the suburb schools later in my childhood when my father moved us.

Black businesses try to establish themselves within the community but can't get them to sell them certain supplies because some asian suppliers will only sell to Asian businesses. A good example is in the beauty, and hair businesses. I've known several black women that have opened their own beauty supply stores, and they would have limited supply because the suppliers overseas would rather give it to fellow asian vendors. The black owned stores would struggle to stay in business. Talk to your local black owned beauty stores. There's more going on behind the scenes than you think.

    A. Because it’s cheaper rent
    B. Because of less regulations
