Love how you underscored this with the Capitol Hi-Q stock music tracks like the old "Gumby" shorts used.
And I agree, what's the point of a Gumby show that's not clay animation?

I prefer to use the term "Beanmouth" when it comes to describing that particular art style, since when John K. was talking about "CalArts style", he was actually talking about non-Disney animation trying to mimic the Disney style (like The Iron Giant, for example); but it just so happened that him coining the term "CalArts style" happened during the same time that discourse surrounding Beanmouth style started popping up on the internet, hence the confusion.
(also, irony of ironies, in that same interview where John K. was talking about CalArts style, he actually cited Rebecca Sugar as one of his favorite contemporary animation directors, who is arguably the originator of the Beanmouth style that has been erroneously labeled as "CalArts style" 😉)

Thanks for the info, and I agree "Beanmouth" is a better term.

Yes I will rather call it Beanmouth over "CalArts" like CalArts if I'm aware does not use that style I think.

I used to like renting the 90s Gumby movie when I was a kid, I remember enjoying it. Never seen the shorts. Maybe I'll check some of the shorts out. I've always been curious about some of the Gumby comics from a while back that were written by Bob Burden, the Flaming Carrot guy.

I used to watch Gumby reruns all the time as a kid. I also had the movie on VHS. The movie was very odd from what I remember. I very vaguely remember the plot in small details. I know there was something about the blockheads wanting to steal Gumby's dog because it could cry pearls, and there was something about a girl who was going to love interest for Gumby. The things that I remember the most is the fake Gumby having a lightsaber duel with the real Gumby, and I remember the hospital scene.
The other characters have to go to the hospital after an accident, and the medical staff let them leave without paying because they helped them test the equipment. I think the doctor said something about how they didn't know whatall the equipment could do until just then. I didn't think about that as a kid, but as an adult I realized they could have gotten sued if that backfired! You should have Krunchy watch it with you, and record his reactions.

Gumby was the first claymation show I seen as a young kid. I loved it as a kid. Still do I have a DVD box set of it.

Pem, you should watch the MST3K episode called The Screaming Skull, as they start off with a classic Gumby short and riff on it. Speaking of, you should do a CC on the Coily the Sprite short. "No Springs"

I was the same way with anime as a kid as you were with Gumby. I didnt understand the popular trading card shows that were big in the 2000s, and I thought they were all weird. That eventually changed when I got into transformers and by extension Bakugan, and even then I still thought cartoons like Pokemon and Yugioh were weird. Before that, the only anime I watched regularly was Speed Racer, because I was a kid so I was just like "yay race car go vroom" lol

Is there anyone who has talent in claymation anymore? Is there any major studio or artist who has the years of experience needed to make claymation on a professional level?

Well, there was a new Looney Tunes short that came out recently done completely in stop motion animation and a new Wallace and Grommit movie coming out (also done in traditional claymation), so yeah, there is.

I don't see this going well just from the art and it's not like CG can't do clay texturing, look at Flushed Away I think that was CG and it looked like clay. This style is just so this can be made cheap. All I see it as lazy assholes putting no effort at all to make it stand out or intresting.
