  • Can comics, manga and cartooning be fine art? In this video, I present a series of 47 international artists that do so. Most of these artists have been influenced by cartoons, manga, lowbrow art, Pop Surrealism and/or street art. They have used cartooning as a strategy to portray narratives, blend cultures and critique or comment on contemporary society.
In the video, I mention another video entitled “Lowbrow Art & Pop Surrealism Explained” at the 8m41s mark. That video can be found here: [ • Lowbrow Art & Pop Surr... ]

In my humble opinion this type of cartoon/street/comic style of art is more fine art than modern fine art . This type of work speaks to me more than an Abstract painting

Is Abstract still contemporary? I haven't kept up. Some of it speaks to me. Some abstract work doesn't land at all with me.

It's still around, but merging with other styles.

Imagine a panel from Berserk (manga) or Shigurui (manga) blowup in a gallery. Definitely fine art.

its not about wether a kid is doing fine art or comics.... it matters if they are good at what they do.

@@FrankCurkovicwhat matters too is how much of it there is, if anybody can do it, is it really fine art or common?

Want to know the truth, manga and anime is fine art if your Japanese. Comic books and cartoon is consider fine art if you go to usa art school you can use it. It is due to personification and stuff

@frankcurkovic Seriously… do you not have 20 seconds for BIPOC artists? Women, asians represented but black and brown remain invisible, let alone lgbtqia peoples.
