But seriously, it would be interesting to see how it worked against some potentially rusted on nuts vs. a clean freshly torqued one.
DeBoss Garage went out to the junkyard with the big Milwaukee 3/4" battery powered impact and did some good stuff. It was a few months ago, maybe last summer or fall. It was a good "real world" test that proved it has some muscle.
There's some nuts, or rather bolts, you just can't un-do with an impact gun. At work, we've got two "claw guns", the big Milwaukees with the "chainsaw" grip. I forget what the anvil size is, but we JUST use them for removing hold down claws. We're by the Gulf, so *everything* rusts, even stainless, and we only have access to the bolts, not the nuts. If water has got in there and eaten through whatever moly-lube was on the bolts, and there's a big circumferential rust wad, we're left with prying off the locking plates on the back to access the nuts. There's always one or two out of 30 bolts we have to do this for.
The point is; you can't standardize a rusted test. While externally visibly identical, there's different stuff going on inside that produces VASTLY different breakaway torques.
Check out the Singlecams channel. He has lots of videos testing impact wrenches on rusty ass axle nuts in junkyards, including this makita.
As a small real life example. Took my summer wheels off my bmw last week which were torque at 130nm. Took as long as the 500ft pounds bolt here on average. Of course with a smaller socket on the dtw700.
Please! Put a torque wrench on your dyno. I’d really like to see how a clicker or digital torque wrench corresponds with your calibration.

@@truckdirty so youre saying if a bolt is torqued to 200 ft lbs it does not take 200 ft lbs to remove it? perhaps only 190 or 195 ft lbs is needed? that does not sound right. maybe it is but i dont have any proof of such scenario, i would like to see an example.
@@dangerdavefreestyle that's exactly what's being said. It's easier to loosen a clean bolt than it is to tighten a clean bolt. Rust and age may change that, but as a general rule, that bolt is gonna come off faster than it went on

I like the compactness of the Gen 2 Milwaukee, to me compact size is very desirable in a mid-torque impact. However impressive numbers/power from the Makita.
Test the Dewalt DCF891B Mid Torque claims fastening torque of 600 ft-lbs and Max breakaway torque of 800 ft-lbs against the Makita and Milwaukee Mid Torque Impact wrenches

absolutely, i agree....syracuse salt and 1000ft pound impacts at tire stores do not make a good combo....this electric wouldn't last 1 wheel

What’s the proper procedure for that kind of situation? Do you take a wire brush to the threads first? Replace the nuts and studs every season?
My downer with Makita Cordless Tools is how many times for my self and others on site we have come to a stop with smoke coming from them. I am no brand snob and have a number of brands tools but from my experience they tend to fail the most. Over the last few years we have noticed probably everyone with Makita to maybe three or four still using them.

When opening nut, the reality is found at the far end of the graph, as non turning nut have no flex, like hydraulic measuring equipment have when pressure is rising. Meaning, every hammer hit is giving max torq blows when nut is not turning. So the graph should be looked at the opposite end first when opening bolts. imo

It would be cool to see a dyno on the flexzilla high flow air line fittings compared to your standard size air fitting.
The other day I tried removing a 33mm lug nut with my 1/2 HF Earthquake XT, 3/8 hose high flow fittings. That gun struggled hard to remove the nuts. I was successful to get two though so there's that. Safe to say I won't be reaching for a "mid torque" to remove heavy duty lug nuts 😅
Haha.. Same, I grabbed a 33 mm socket with my mid torque Ridgid that's rated at 624' ft-lbs breakaway it did take off a 500 ft-lbs lug nut from a big rig but it took about 20 seconds but it do it. lol

@Torque Test Channel Can you explain the difference between the Makita XWT18Z and XWT18XVZ(pin detent models) ? They seem to have the same stats and are bare tools but the XVZ costs quite a bit more...
It might be worth doing longer runs for this reason. I only know how to read the graphs, not the scenarios and situations these tools would be used in. But it might be worth tweaking the graphs with longer runs to show more clearly how the wrench performs vs a specific bolt torque. I'd imagine the differential of the power vs the power itself might be a much better graph - users could just look along to the torque they encounter and see which is higher on the chart. Rather than a direct readout from the meter it would be showing how quickly a bolt is moved vs a specific torque. Possibly only useful in reverse, and doesn't as cleanly translate to a single number for the charts, but still far easier to understand and convert to the performance we see in this test (even for people who don't understand the maths behind the chart).

before i watch the video...i will say NO...BUT after watching the video, i am shocked ...although it is a brand new stud and nut, 500 foot pounds is good.....however as a truck mechanic for 25 years and all the lugs I took off over the years, this gun would NEVER take off the lugs on 90% of the rigs out there because 1) tire stores put their lugs on over 700+ foot pounds and 2) rusted studs and nuts make it hard for a 3/4" drive impact gun to get them off easily....i have seen tire shops put on lugs with 1" impact guns and after a few moths of rust, i have spent 10 minutes taking off lugs on ONE wheel....so back to the test, YES, it works on a new stud and nut but in the real world, it won't work 90% of the time
I totally agree with your findings as well, my exposure to truck lug nuts is on my farm and farm neighbours struggling to get off the lug nuts as well if they have rusted on. I had this discussion with this channel and they agree with the real world condition of wheel end hardware vs new hardware but as they pointed out its impossible to create a consistent fair test for the tools other then what they are doing with new studs. I have the Milwaukee high torque and have experimented with it on a freshly installed lug nut using the drops of oil on the stud and the two in one nut and it will take them off without too much work. Forget it with the next wheel that has not been off in a few years, 1/2 tools are over their head to ever expect to work with hardware like that but some channels on youtube ( not this one ) still pretend their 1/2 impact is up for the task which is false and misleading.
In the future, could you maybe match the graph line color and text to the color of tools being tested? Red for Milwaukee, Blue for Makita, dayglo green for Ryobi, Orange for Rigid, etc.
And larger fonts on graph? Its difficult if not impossible to read the tiny text on a cell phone screen.
It seems wildly different than my experience with a 1/2" drive 18v impact wrench from Makita that I bought a month ago. Advertised 240 ft. lbs of loosening power. Tried it on my F-150 whose lugs are 150#, lightly never seized. Ran it for about two minutes and it just couldn't budge them. Got out the air gun and it spun them off without blinking. 1/2" drive Pittsburg long anvil. Tried them by hand with a 1/2" drive and they seemed about 150# worth of grunt. So why is mine so much different? This was the very first use with a fully charged six amp battery. I bought it because its little brother 1/4" impact has done a great job for me the past five years. Punching in 4" lag screws by the dozen on a single charge building my shop. Never a miss. Thousands of screws in the sheathing and purlins, boxed beam rafters, insulation, steel roofing and siding, the list goes on and on. Doesn't look like this 1/2" is going to be much use at all!
You should have got the Makita XWT-14. It's more powerful than the Milwaukee Fuel M12 and the Milwaukee M12 removed bolts on another channel that was tightened down to 450 ft lbs. So the Makita XWT-14 should be able to remove nuts torqued to 450 ft lbs fairly easy. Possibly up to 500 ft lbs.
manufacturers are full of shit with their advertised torque ratings the same way they are with shop vac horsepower ratings if you watch Jeremy Fieldings channel.....they lie about everything, promotional offers, food labels, 2 post auto lift capacities......they know your eyes will go straight to the torque number, i dont go by numbers, i go by real world tests with videos of guys who go around a junkyard and blast off various rusty bolts

One of the mechanics at our bus shop has it. It performs pretty well, though not nearly as quick as the milwaukee or makita. If I had to guess I would wager 6-7 seconds. Far from shabby for the money.

Yes, there are digital gauges that measure dynamic torque. They are around $5,000 and the actual number they spit out isn't comparable to anything really. But does allow you to compare power per blow.

I have the new makita XWT18Z and can’t find any reviews on it! I wonder if the xwt17z is the same?? List the same torque specs as the 18z but has some technical features on the tool for different speeds and stuff..,

It is not a semi truck lug nut, just a 32 mm nut. You have to go to a truck stop and remove a lug nut, that is a test.

so the big 3/4" torque wrench tightened it to 500 ft lbs yet the impact was able to get it off no prob but on your machine and graph it produces nowheres near that much torque?
I would bet $100 that the Makita XWT-14 compact 1/2" could remove that lug nut in less than 20 seconds with a 4 amp hour battery or higher.

Torque on an F350 from the last decade is 165ft-lbs. 150 is for cone style lug nuts on an F-350, not steel nuts.

I think.... all 500ft pounds of tightening torque aren't necessarily the same. With a wheel, there is some "spring" in the wheel that should hold a little longer verses the flat plate. I may be wrong. So it would be neat to see an actual lug nut on a semi wheel setup for comparison.

I just bought a NitroCat 1200K to help me undo a Honda/Acura V6 crank bolt so I can redo the cam belt and water pump. These are notorious for being very tight. It seemed like a good $$$/torque quotient and with a sturdy trigger and quiet exhaust. Wish me luck.

You should test some kobalt stuff. I have the non xtr 1/2" and it seems to perform well. I think it's rated for 650 ft lbs which I feel is at least somewhat close.

I wanna see what torque this badboy can do with a 5Ah High Output Milwaukee battery strapped on. There's a test of a Makita XWT11 impact with that Milwaukee battery & the Makita is seems roughly 30% more powerful!
Relevance? If the Makita mid torque can crack 600 lbs/ft it would well and truly render high torque impacts redundant for people working on standard light vehicles, aka most people.

What I heard from those who are "supposed to know" is that the second click is over-torquing the nut. One click is tight. Two clicks is over tight. Don't shoot the messenger.
