I know the courses focus on mill rule layout but do any of you have advice on where to study layout methods one might use on rough sawn timbers that most likely aren't going to be perfectly square & true? I know the finished product won't be as fine as what you folks build, but I want to start with what I can affordand mill myself 1st

Exactly. So why not just buy the Veritas honing guide? That's what I have and it's tremendous.

We love sand paper and leather as the sharpening media. The Veritas honing guide does an excellent job ensuring the same angle every time you sharpen! You can find the whole kit, or just the honing guide at Shelter Tools
